⚙ OpenAI Launches ChatGPT-Powered SearchGPT, Taking on Google

OpenAI is venturing into the search engine market with its new ChatGPT-powered feature, SearchGPT, potentially setting the stage for a significant shift in how users access news and timely information online. This move could position the artificial intelligence company in direct competition with search giant Google.

A New Contender in Search

San Francisco-based OpenAI announced on Thursday the release of a preview version of SearchGPT. This initial rollout is intended to gather feedback from a select group of users and publishers, helping to refine the service before a broader launch.

The Changing Landscape of Search Engines

In May, Google introduced a major overhaul to its search engine, incorporating AI-generated written summaries at the top of search results. These summaries aim to quickly provide answers to users' queries, reducing the need for them to click through to other websites. This change followed a year of testing with a limited user base and has shown both the potential and pitfalls of integrating AI into search engines, with some errors highlighting the challenges of relying on AI for information retrieval.

Microsoft's AI Search Efforts

OpenAI’s close business partner, Microsoft, is not far behind in this technological race. Microsoft has been testing AI summaries on its Bing search engine, indicating a broader industry trend towards leveraging AI to enhance search capabilities.

The Implications of AI in Search

The integration of AI in search engines could significantly affect internet traffic patterns, particularly for news and other timely information. AI summaries that provide quick answers might reduce the number of clicks on links, impacting the revenue and visibility of content publishers.

Feedback and Future Development

The preview of SearchGPT aims to collect insights from users and publishers, which will be crucial for OpenAI to address potential issues and improve the service. This feedback loop will help ensure that the AI can deliver accurate and relevant information while minimizing errors.

The Competitive Edge

By entering the search engine market, OpenAI not only challenges Google’s long-standing dominance but also leverages its expertise in AI to potentially offer more nuanced and conversational search results. This could appeal to users looking for more interactive and engaging ways to find information online.

Conclusion

OpenAI’s foray into the search engine market with SearchGPT marks a significant development in the ongoing evolution of search technology. As AI continues to reshape how we access and consume information, the competition between tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and now OpenAI will likely drive further innovation and improvements in this critical area of digital life.

🦞 Angie’s Lobster Brings $9.99 Maine Lobster Rolls to the Nevada Desert

Angie’s Lobster, famous for its $9.99 Maine lobster rolls, is set to open its first Las Vegas location on August 2. Known for offering lobster rolls at a fraction of the typical price, Angie’s Lobster has raised eyebrows, particularly since similar rolls can cost $25 or more in other parts of town.

How Angie’s Keeps Prices Low

Angie’s manages to maintain such low prices due to its unique business model and efficient supply chain. The company owns a wharf on Bailey Island, Maine, where it buys lobster directly from fishermen. These lobsters are then processed at their 63,000-square-foot facility in Richmond, Maine. By owning the entire supply chain, from boat to table, and utilizing their own fleet of trucks for distribution, Angie’s can keep costs down and pass those savings on to customers.

“Our business model is about efficiency. We do not chase revenue like everyone else; we chase efficiency,” explained Tony Christofellis, co-founder of Angie’s Lobster.

A Family Legacy

Tony Christofellis and his wife, Roushan Christofellis, launched Angie’s Lobster in late 2021 after selling their previous venture, Salad & Go, a drive-thru salad chain with around 150 stores in the Southwest. The name Angie’s Lobster honors Tony’s late mother, Angela “Angie” Christofellis, who was an immigrant from Greece and a lifelong worker in the seafood restaurant industry. Angie’s Lobster aims to carry forward her legacy of love, courage, and dedication to quality service.

Las Vegas Location Details

  • Address: 4835 Blue Diamond Road, at South Decatur Boulevard, in Enterprise.

  • Opening Date: August 2, 2024.

  • Hours: Initially open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Starting August 13, hours will extend from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., adding breakfast service.

Menu Highlights

Angie’s Lobster offers a variety of seafood options:

  • Lunch and Dinner: Lobster rolls, lobster tail sandwiches, fried shrimp or cod sandwiches, and fried shrimp or cod meals.

  • Breakfast: French toast and breakfast sandwiches.

  • Pricing: Items can be ordered à la carte or as part of a meal with fries, Angie’s sauce, and a drink for an additional $2.

Grand Opening Special

To celebrate its grand opening on August 13, Angie’s Lobster will provide a voucher for a free breakfast to customers who purchase a lunch or dinner meal.

Dining Experience

Angie’s Lobster features a drive-thru, counter service, and a dining area. The restaurant accepts debit cards, credit cards, and smartphone payments but does not take cash. The buns used for the lobster rolls are the essential top-split style with flat sides, ensuring an authentic lobster roll experience.

Conclusion

With its unique business model and commitment to honoring a family legacy, Angie’s Lobster is poised to become a popular destination for seafood lovers in Las Vegas. The affordable pricing and quality seafood promise a delightful dining experience for all.

⚾ Bally’s Corp. Advances Las Vegas Ballpark Plans Following $4.6 Billion Merger

Bally’s Corp. is maintaining its momentum on the Oakland Athletics’ planned Las Vegas ballpark and the development of the 35-acre Tropicana site following a significant merger announcement. The $4.6 billion deal saw Standard General LP, a hedge fund managed by Bally’s Chairman Soo Kim, acquire Bally’s Corp.

Key Points from the Merger

  • Standard General LP Acquisition: Standard General, already Bally’s largest shareholder, finalized the $4.6 billion buyout, reinforcing their confidence in Bally’s future projects, including the Tropicana redevelopment and the new ballpark.

  • Tropicana Redevelopment: Bally’s owns the rights to the 35-acre site where the Tropicana resort currently stands. The site is set for an October implosion to pave the way for new developments.

Confidence in Future Projects

Chairman Soo Kim emphasized the merger as a strong vote of confidence in the company's direction. “The deal is an affirmation that the largest shareholders of the company believe that Bally’s future is bright, and that future includes the Tropicana redevelopment and ballpark,” Kim said.

Oakland Athletics’ New Ballpark

  • Site Details: The Athletics plan to build a $1.5 billion ballpark on 9 acres of the Tropicana site. The ballpark will feature a prominent steel-curtain glass wall with views of the Strip.

  • Funding and Agreements: The A’s are negotiating agreements with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority to secure up to $380 million in public funding. These agreements are expected to be finalized by December.

  • Construction Timeline: Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2024, with completion aimed for the 2028 MLB season. The A’s will play at a minor league ballpark in Sacramento from 2025 to 2027.

Moving Forward

The merger and ongoing projects underscore Bally’s commitment to enhancing its presence in Las Vegas. The redevelopment of the Tropicana site and the construction of the new ballpark are pivotal components of this strategy, aimed at boosting tourism and economic activity in the area.

Kamala Harris Secures Barack and Michelle Obama’s Support for 2024 Run

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the White House. This endorsement comes at a crucial time as Harris gains momentum as the Democratic Party's likely nominee following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and back his second-in-command against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

Key Points of the Endorsement

  • Historic Support: The Obamas' endorsement was announced in a video showing Harris receiving a joint phone call from the former first couple. Barack Obama expressed pride and commitment to helping Harris win the election. Michelle Obama echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the historic nature of Harris's candidacy.

  • Longstanding Relationship: Harris has known the Obamas since before Barack Obama’s 2008 election, underscoring a deep personal and professional bond.

  • Campaign Momentum: Harris expressed gratitude for the Obamas' friendship and support, looking forward to campaigning alongside them in the lead-up to Election Day on November 5.

Impact on the Campaign

  • Significant Backing: The Obamas are the last major Democratic figures to endorse Harris formally, reflecting their cautious but supportive approach. Their endorsement adds significant weight to Harris's campaign due to their popularity and influence within the party.

  • Fundraising and Support: The endorsement comes as Harris has already secured the backing of a majority of Democratic National Convention delegates and raised over $120 million. The Democratic National Committee expects to confirm Harris and a yet-to-be-named running mate as the official Democratic ticket by August 7.

Biden’s Decision and Democratic Support

  • Biden's Endorsement: President Biden endorsed Harris shortly after announcing his decision to end his campaign, highlighting concerns about his ability to defeat Trump at 81 years old.

  • Support from Key Democrats: Following Biden’s announcement, prominent Democrats including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn, and the Clintons quickly endorsed Harris.

The Obamas’ Role in the Campaign

  • Strategic Endorsement: Barack Obama maintained a discreet presence during the initial stages of Harris's campaign, ensuring a smooth transition of support within the party. His public endorsement signifies full commitment to Harris’s candidacy.

  • Campaign Activities: The Obamas are expected to be active on the campaign trail, leveraging their popularity and fundraising capabilities. Both have a history of vigorous campaigning, having supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020, and delivering key speeches during critical moments.

Conclusion

The endorsement from Barack and Michelle Obama solidifies Kamala Harris's position as the Democratic Party's likely nominee. With the support of the nation’s most popular Democrats and a well-organized campaign strategy, Harris is poised to make a strong bid for the presidency, aiming to break new barriers and continue the legacy of her predecessors.
