๐ก Clark County Reports 63 Heat-Related Deaths in 2024, Final Count Expected to Rise
Clark County has reported a total of 63 heat-related deaths in 2024, according to a new report. This figure includes 46 deaths that have been officially identified and whose next-of-kin have been notified. However, due to the typical 90-day determination period for 90% of cases within the Clark County Coronerโs Office, the final death toll is expected to be higher.
Causes of Death
The report identifies several common causes of heat-related deaths, with "cardiovascular disease" and "environmental heat stress" being the most prevalent. Another notable cause of death is "methamphetamine toxicity," highlighting the compounding effects of drug use and extreme heat. The Southern Nevada Health District has previously pointed out how substances like fentanyl can worsen the impact of excessive heat on the body.
Contributing Factors
Additional factors that contributed to heat-related deaths include pre-existing medical conditions, fatigue, and hydration levels. The interplay of these factors can significantly increase the risk of mortality during periods of extreme heat.
Age Range of Victims
The victims of heat-related deaths in Clark County span a wide age range. The youngest recorded death was a 29-year-old male who succumbed to methamphetamine toxicity. The oldest victim was a 94-year-old man who died due to complications related to diabetes.
Nature of Deaths
The coroner's office ruled every death listed in the report as accidental. This classification underscores the preventable nature of many heat-related fatalities and the importance of taking appropriate precautions during extreme weather conditions.
Expected Increase in Final Tally
Given the delay in determining the cause of death for many cases, the current total of 63 heat-related deaths is likely to rise. The county emphasized that the final count will only be available once all investigations are concluded and all next-of-kin have been notified.
Public Health Implications
The report highlights the critical need for public health interventions to address the risks associated with extreme heat. It underscores the importance of public awareness about the dangers of heat exposure, especially for vulnerable populations, including those with pre-existing health conditions and individuals using drugs that can exacerbate heat effects.
Community Response and Prevention
Local health officials are urging residents to take preventive measures during heatwaves. Recommendations include staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours, and seeking cool environments. Public health campaigns are also being intensified to educate the community about the signs of heat-related illnesses and the steps to take in emergencies.
Conclusion
The increase in heat-related deaths in Clark County in 2024 is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme temperatures. As the final death toll is yet to be determined, it is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from the potentially fatal effects of heat.
๐ฐ Apollo's $6.3 Billion Purchase of IGT Expected to Clear Regulatory Hurdles
Executives from IGT, the London-based gaming equipment manufacturer with significant operations in Nevada, are confident that the $6.3 billion acquisition by an affiliate of Apollo Global Management will receive swift regulatory approval.
Background and Regulatory Confidence
IGT CEO Vince Sadusky expressed optimism during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday. "Apollo is in the gaming business, so they have experience with regulators," Sadusky explained in response to an investorโs question. This experience is expected to facilitate a smooth approval process.
The transaction with Apollo supersedes an earlier plan for IGT to merge with Las Vegas-based Everi Holdings, announced on February 29. That merger had already been reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), positioning IGT well for the current acquisition.
Prior Merger with Everi
Sadusky mentioned that the DOJ had evaluated the original transaction with Everi. "We had our transaction, our original transaction with Everi, evaluated by the DOJ," he said. This prior evaluation is expected to expedite the current approval process for the Apollo deal.
"We think itโs logical that the focus from an antitrust perspective would be on Apolloโs business. The IGT business has already been evaluated, and theyโre (Apollo) not in the equipment manufacturing business and own a casino (The Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas). So weโre hopeful that that will move along pretty quickly on both fronts," Sadusky noted.
Timeline and Expectations
IGT executives estimate that the approval process will take roughly a year, possibly extending up to 15 months. Representatives from IGT, Everi, and Apollo announced the new transaction last Friday but did not provide specifics on how it will impact Nevada operations.
IGTโs Operations and Legacy
IGT and Everi both have substantial manufacturing operations in Las Vegas. IGTโs core slot machine manufacturing business, founded by William โSiโ Redd in 1975, has a notable presence in Reno. Known as International Game Technology since 1981, the company is famous for developing and distributing Wheel of Fortune-themed slot machines.
Financial Performance
For the quarter ending June 30, IGT reported an operating income of $230 million, or 20 cents per share, on revenue of $1.05 billion. These figures represent an 8 percent decline in income and a 1 percent decrease in revenue compared to the same quarter last year.
Given the pending transaction, IGT did not provide future financial guidance, citing upcoming separation and divestiture expenses.
Conclusion
As IGT transitions under new ownership, the companyโs executives remain confident that their established regulatory rapport and Apolloโs industry experience will ensure a smooth and timely approval process. The acquisition marks a significant shift for IGT, but with a solid strategy and strong market presence, the company looks set to navigate this new phase successfully.
๐ Aces Fans to Face Ticket Price Increase for 2024 Season
Aces fans will experience a hike in ticket prices for the first time since Mark Davis acquired the team in 2021. Season-ticket holders received a letter from Aces president Nikki Fargas on Monday, outlining the "enhanced benefits and price changes" before the renewal period begins on August 15.
Ticket Price Adjustments
The average ticket price will rise from $30.78 this year to $43.95 next season. The decision to raise prices came after intense internal discussions. "It was a fight in here," Davis said on Thursday, indicating his opposition to the increase. "Basically no blood, but there could have been. Iโd rather just give (the tickets) away for free, but theyโre not letting you do that."
Price Changes Across Different Tiers
The most significant changes will affect premium seating. Courtside seats on the sideline and baseline, previously priced at $500 per game and $10,000 for the 2024 season, will increase to $600 per game and $13,200 for the season. Despite these increases, the most affordable seats in the upper bowl will see only a slight rise. Season tickets in this section will cost $220, up from $200, maintaining the same price per game due to the addition of two home games next season.
Static Pricing and Market Dynamics
The Acesโ pricing strategy remains static, meaning ticket prices do not fluctuate based on the opponent. However, this is not the case in the secondary market, where prices can vary significantly.
High Demand and Membership Waiting List
The Aces, two-time defending champions, sold out all their home games this season and became the first team in WNBA history to sell out its allotted season tickets. There is currently a waiting list of 2,300 people looking to purchase memberships for the 2025 season.
Changes in Perks and Benefits
New season-ticket holders will not receive free parking at Mandalay Bay, but existing members who renew will keep this benefit. Other new perks for season-ticket holders, depending on their tier, include events with player appearances and a Q&A session with coach Becky Hammon.
WNBA's Growth and Impact on Pricing
The WNBA is experiencing significant growth, fueled by a popular rookie class that includes Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese. Reflecting this interest, the Sky have more than doubled their ticket prices for next season, with courtside season tickets reportedly increasing from $4,500 to $11,000.
Advocacy for Female Athletes
Mark Davis praised the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) for sponsoring each player on the Acesโ roster for $100,000, totaling $1.2 million. "What the LVCVA did in recognizing these women ... Iโm so grateful," Davis said, reiterating his criticism of the pay disparity between male and female athletes.
The WNBA responded to the LVCVA sponsorships by hiring outside legal counsel to investigate. While the league has not commented on the status of the investigation, the LVCVA reported that payments were being distributed to some players.
Davis' Vision for Aces Players
Davis expressed hope that increased earnings for Aces players in the U.S. would reduce their need to play overseas during the offseason. When asked about feedback from other owners regarding the LVCVA sponsorships, Davis quipped, "Yeah. They say weโre going to investigate the Aces."
Conclusion
The upcoming season will see Aces fans paying more for tickets, reflecting the teamโs growing popularity and success. While this decision met with some resistance internally, the team remains committed to enhancing the fan experience and advocating for better compensation for its players.
โ Rep. Mike Kelly to Lead House Task Force on Trump Assassination Attempt
Republican Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, who witnessed the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump firsthand, will lead a new House task force dedicated to investigating the incident and recommending preventive measures. The attack occurred on July 13 during a campaign rally in Kellyโs hometown of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Task Force Composition and Mission
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) jointly announced the formation of the 13-member task force on Monday. The bipartisan panel, consisting of seven Republicans and six Democrats, is charged with uncovering what went wrong and proposing solutions to prevent such attacks in the future. The task force is expected to issue its final report by December 13 and has been granted the authority to issue subpoenas.
โWe have the utmost confidence in this bipartisan group of steady, highly qualified, and capable members of Congress to move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and help make certain such failures never happen again,โ Johnson and Jeffries said in a joint statement.
Backgrounds of Task Force Members
Many of the lawmakers appointed to the task force have extensive backgrounds in law enforcement, legal affairs, or the military, ensuring a comprehensive and informed investigation. The task force will oversee and consolidate all pending House committee investigations related to the assassination attempt.
Republican Members:
Rep. Mark Green (Tenn.): Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.
Rep. David Joyce (Ohio): Former county prosecutor.
Rep. Laurel Lee (Fla.): Former assistant U.S. attorney.
Rep. Michael Waltz (Fla.): Former U.S. Army Special Forces member.
Rep. Clay Higgins (La.): Former Army staff sergeant and local law enforcement officer.
Rep. Pat Fallon (Texas): Former U.S. Air Force officer.
Democratic Members:
Rep. Jason Crow (Colo.): Lead Democratic member, decorated former Army Ranger who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Rep. Lou Correa (Calif.): Member of the subcommittee that recently visited the site of the assassination attempt.
Rep. Madeleine Dean (Pa.): Former member of Pennsylvaniaโs House of Representatives.
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (Pa.): Veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Rep. Glenn Ivey (Md.): Former assistant U.S. attorney and stateโs attorney for Prince Georgeโs County.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (Fla.): Former director of emergency management in Florida.
Context of the Investigation
The attempted assassination on July 13 left the nation in shock. Trump was struck by a bullet or a fragment during the rally, which resulted in immediate and extensive law enforcement response. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old with a history of reclusive behavior, had conducted extensive online research into mass attacks and improvised explosive devices.
Importance of the Task Force
Rep. Kelly, who sponsored the legislation to create the task force, emphasized the need for answers and accountability. โThe people of Butler and the people of the United States deserve answers,โ Kelly said. The task force's creation is a significant step towards understanding the failures that led to the attack and ensuring the safety of political figures and the public in the future.
Moving Forward
The task force will convene to begin its investigation, aiming to deliver a thorough report by the end of the year. This investigation is expected to provide critical insights into the security lapses and propose robust measures to prevent similar incidents.
Conclusion
The establishment of the House task force marks a critical effort to address the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. With a diverse and experienced group of lawmakers, the task force is poised to conduct a comprehensive investigation and recommend vital security enhancements.
