Human Composting Now Legal in Nevada, New Facility Opens in Las Vegas

Nevadans now have a new eco-friendly end-of-life option: turning their bodies into nutrient-rich soil. Earth Funeral, a green burial company based in Washington, inaugurated a facility in Las Vegas on Wednesday, offering what the company describes as an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional burials.

The process involves breaking down bodies into soil over 45 days using a specialized vessel. Priced at $4,950, this method is significantly cheaper than the average funeral cost in Nevada, according to Earth Funeral. The facility, located near Harry Reid International Airport, spans 12,000 square feet and houses 75 vessels for the composting process.

"Deathcare is a deeply personal decision made by an individual and their family," said Tom Harries, CEO of Earth Funeral, in a statement. "With the opening of our new West Coast facility, we can now help even more people discover human composting and make the best, most sustainable end-of-life decision for them."

Legal Changes Enable Human Composting

Human composting became legal in Nevada at the start of this year with the passage of Assembly Bill 289. Washington was the first state to legalize this practice in 2019, followed by 11 other states.

Assemblyman Max Carter, D-Las Vegas, who sponsored the bill, expressed his enthusiasm about the rapid implementation of this option. "As both a trauma support volunteer and a proud advocate for my constituents, it was important to me that human composting—and its many environmental and emotional benefits—be readily available for Nevadans," Carter said.

🎰 Tropicana Resort Demolition Set to Make Way for $1.5 Billion A's Ballpark

Bally's Corporation is moving forward with the planned demolition of the iconic Tropicana resort, a key step in the development of a new $1.5 billion ballpark for the Oakland Athletics. The resort, known for its Rat Pack-era charm, will see its hotel towers imploded in early October, as confirmed by Bally's CEO Robeson Reeves during a recent company earnings call.

Timeline and Development Plans

The demolition is slated to occur between September 30 and October 8, according to a blast permit application filed with Clark County. This timeframe aligns with Bally's objective to transfer 9 acres of the 35-acre Tropicana site to the A’s by April 2024, allowing them to begin construction on the ballpark.

Bally's is also evaluating potential developments for the remaining acreage surrounding the future stadium. However, no specific plans have been disclosed yet.

Merger and Project Continuity

During the earnings call, Bally's executives did not address questions regarding their recent $4.6 billion merger with hedge fund Standard General. Further details on the merger will be shared as the regulatory process progresses. Bally's Chairman Soo Kim has previously assured that the merger will not impact the Tropicana project or the A's stadium plans.

A's executive Sandy Dean echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the ballpark project is independent of Bally's corporate changes. "Bally’s has been working on this transaction for a while, and our ballpark project is independent of these changes in Bally’s ownership," Dean stated.

Next Steps for the Ballpark Project

Before construction can commence, the A's must secure approvals from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority for three critical agreements: development, lease, and nonrelocation. These agreements are necessary for unlocking up to $380 million in public funding for the stadium. Discussions and refinements of these agreements are expected over the next few months, with approvals anticipated by December, according to Stadium Authority chairman Steve Hill.

Once these agreements are in place, the A's will need to finalize their portion of the stadium's financing. This includes spending the initial $100 million on the project and securing $300 million in debt financing and $850 million in equity from team owner John Fisher’s family. The team also plans to attract minority investors to further support the stadium’s construction.

The new ballpark is projected to be completed in time for the 2028 MLB season.

🏈 Daniel Carlson Embraces Potential Role Change Amidst NFL Rule Shift

Daniel Carlson, the Raiders' All-Pro kicker, might see a shift in his responsibilities this season due to the NFL's new kickoff rules. While Carlson will continue handling field goals and extra points, there is a possibility that someone else could take over kickoff duties to better adapt to the rule changes.

"If that’s something we can take advantage of, then I’m all for it because I just want to win football games," Carlson said. "Right now, everything is kind of fair play."

Strategic Adjustments

One potential advantage of the new rules is the opportunity to place an additional tackler on the field. This is because the player who kicks off is the only defender who can move before the ball hits the ground or is touched by the return team. If a fast player can time their run correctly, they could significantly enhance the coverage unit.

To explore these options, Carlson and punter AJ Cole shared kickoff duties during Wednesday’s practice at Jack Hammett Sports Complex. Additionally, rookie safety Phalen Sanford, linebacker Luke Masterson, and cornerback Sam Webb also practiced kickoffs, with linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and cornerback Jack Jones participating earlier in the week.

"A lot of good effort," Carlson said. "Some guys are doing a really good job, and some guys have been cut. They’re great athletes. It’s funny when some ask me questions about how to kick, and I’m like, ‘Play 10 years of soccer. That usually helps.’"

Decision Making

Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon is evaluating whether the benefit of an extra tackler outweighs the precision that Carlson or Cole can provide with their kicks. Specialists have the ability to place kickoffs more accurately and with various spins and angles, which could be strategically advantageous.

McMahon remained tight-lipped about Jones handling kickoffs but acknowledged the good performance of both Jones and Masterson during practice. However, Jones was later instructed by coaches not to participate in the drill.

Tackling Emphasis

Regardless of who handles kickoffs, tackling will become more critical. "There’s 10 plays a game now that it used to be you could hide guys and kick touchbacks," McMahon said. "There’s no hiding anymore, and they get that. Everybody has to contribute. And everybody has to tackle and block. Everybody has to strain."

Carlson, although jokingly disputed by Cole, mentioned he has been practicing tackling drills. McMahon emphasized that the kicker must tackle, whoever that may be.

Evolving Rules

The new rule aims to revitalize what had become a stagnant play in the NFL. McMahon admitted that about 70 percent of the strategies formulated in the film room don’t work as expected on the field. Preseason games will provide more insight into the effectiveness of various approaches.

Carlson noted the challenge of adapting to the evolving rules, including a recent league clarification that affected his kickoff technique. "We’re learning on the fly and having to be creative about it," he said. "They’re making different rules as we go. You have to adapt as we go."

If long returns become too frequent, teams might revert to kicking the ball through the end zone for a touchback, which now places the ball at the 30-yard line instead of the 25.

For now, the Raiders are navigating these changes and exploring their options to gain an edge under the new rules.

Vance Highlights Immigration and Economic Policies in Henderson Speech

Republican vice presidential nominee and Ohio Senator JD Vance emphasized policy differences and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris during a campaign rally in Henderson, Nevada. Vance downplayed the significance of Harris potentially leading the Democratic ticket instead of President Joe Biden, asserting that the Republican focus on policy remains unchanged.

Campaign Strategies and Criticism

In his remarks, Vance characterized Harris as a "San Francisco liberal" with policies he believes are detrimental, such as opposing fracking. He argued that the Republican agenda, spearheaded by former President Donald Trump and himself, offers superior solutions for improving American lives. Vance claimed Harris is accountable for the Biden administration's failures, and highlighted plans for a "great American restoration" starting in Nevada.

Focus on Immigration

Vance leaned heavily into immigration issues, criticizing Harris for her role in managing border-related matters under the Biden administration. He accused her of being disloyal to the country by allegedly opening borders and compromising Medicare. He reiterated GOP concerns about illegal immigration, highlighting cases of crimes committed by previously deported individuals. Vance also warned against a Harris administration allowing non-citizens to vote and proposed a robust deportation program under Trump.

Response from Democrats

Maddy Pawlak, communications director for Harris’ 2024 campaign in Nevada, criticized Vance's approach, emphasizing Nevada's values and challenging his understanding of state issues. She reaffirmed support for Harris and opposition to Trump's "extreme agenda."

Broader Policy Issues

Vance also addressed manufacturing and energy policies, asserting that Trump would bolster U.S. manufacturing and oil drilling. He took aim at Harris’ record as a prosecutor, claiming she released dangerous criminals, a point Harris countered by highlighting her successful prosecutions of gangs and traffickers as California’s attorney general.

Appeal to Young Voters

Despite rumors about Trump's dissatisfaction with his VP pick, Vance believes his millennial perspective and experience with the industrial Midwest’s economic struggles make him a valuable asset to the Republican ticket. He emphasized homeownership and wealth-building as key pitches to younger voters, criticizing Harris for policies he claims hinder these opportunities.

Supporter Perspectives

Vance's rally attracted supporters like Cole Parrish, who values their shared Catholic faith, and Mark Flowers, a veteran focused on border policy and cost of living issues. Both attendees voiced strong support for the Trump-Vance campaign and its platform.
