๐Ÿ• Vegas Animal Rescue Offers Free Microchips as New Ordinance Takes Effect

A Las Vegas animal rescue organization is stepping up to support pet owners as a new mandatory microchipping ordinance goes into effect this month. PAWsitive Difference is offering free microchips for pets and will host a special event this Saturday to help comply with the new regulation.

Details of the Event

The event, organized by PAWsitive Difference, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at PetSmart, located at 1261 South Decatur Boulevard. In addition to free microchipping, the event will offer low-cost vaccines and an opportunity for pet adoptions.

Participants needing low-cost vaccines are encouraged to bring their pets' vaccine records. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last or as time permits.

New Ordinance

Starting in August, the City of Las Vegas requires all pets to be microchipped. This new ordinance aims to ensure that lost pets can be easily identified and reunited with their owners, thus reducing the number of stray animals and easing the burden on local shelters.

Benefits of Microchipping

PAWsitive Difference highlights the importance of microchipping in pet ownership. Microchips provide a permanent identification method that can significantly increase the chances of a lost pet being returned to its owner. Unlike collars and tags, which can be lost or removed, a microchip provides a reliable way to identify pets throughout their lives.

"Microchipping helps lost pets be reunited with their owners and reduces strain on valley shelters," said a spokesperson for PAWsitive Difference.

About PAWsitive Difference

PAWsitive Difference has been operating for nine years, dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals in the Las Vegas area. The organization also focuses on educating the public about responsible pet ownership and the benefits of spaying, neutering, and microchipping pets.

How to Get Involved

For more information about the event or to learn more about PAWsitive Difference, including how to support their mission or adopt a pet, visit the rescue's website.

Conclusion

This weekend's event by PAWsitive Difference provides a valuable service to pet owners in Las Vegas, ensuring compliance with the new mandatory microchipping ordinance and promoting responsible pet care. By offering free microchips and low-cost vaccines, the organization is making it easier for pet owners to take essential steps in safeguarding their pets' well-being.

โš–๏ธ Justice Department Sues TikTok Over Children's Privacy Violations

The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the popular social media platform of violating children's online privacy laws. The complaint, submitted in collaboration with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in a California federal court, marks the latest chapter in the ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny of TikTok in the United States.

Allegations of Privacy Law Violations

The lawsuit centers on claims that TikTok and its China-based parent company, ByteDance, breached the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This federal law mandates that apps and websites geared toward children under 13 must obtain parental consent before collecting personal information. The complaint alleges that TikTok failed to secure such consent and did not honor requests from parents to delete their children's accounts. Additionally, TikTok is accused of retaining personal information from accounts it knew were created by children under 13.

"This action is necessary to prevent the defendants, who are repeat offenders and operate on a massive scale, from collecting and using young childrenโ€™s private information without any parental consent or control," stated Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Departmentโ€™s Civil Division.

TikTok's Response

In response, TikTok has expressed disagreement with the allegations. The company asserts that many of the issues cited in the lawsuit relate to past practices that have since been corrected. TikTok highlighted its efforts to provide age-appropriate experiences and implement stringent safeguards for young users. The platform has introduced features such as default screen time limits, Family Pairing, and enhanced privacy protections for minors.

"We offer age-appropriate experiences with stringent safeguards, proactively remove suspected underage users and have voluntarily launched features such as default screentime limits, Family Pairing, and additional privacy protections for minors," TikTok stated.

Background of Legal Issues

The lawsuit is the result of an FTC investigation into TikTok's compliance with a previous settlement. In 2019, the federal government sued Musical.ly, which was acquired by ByteDance in 2017 and later merged with TikTok. The lawsuit alleged that Musical.ly violated COPPA by not informing parents about its collection and use of personal information from children under 13. Musical.ly agreed to pay $5.7 million to resolve these allegations and was subjected to a court order to comply with COPPA.

Despite this settlement, the Justice Department and FTC claim that TikTok has continued to violate COPPA. The current complaint alleges that TikTok has knowingly allowed children to create accounts and retain their personal information without notifying parents. This includes accounts created in "Kids Mode," a feature designed for children under 13 that allows them to view videos but not upload content.

Broader Implications

The complaint further alleges that TikTok has allowed children to create accounts using third-party credentials without age verification or parental approval, resulting in millions of "age unknown" accounts. This has purportedly enabled millions of children under 13 to use the regular TikTok app, exposing them to interactions with adults and access to adult content.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for TikTok's operations in the U.S. and set a precedent for how children's online privacy is enforced. As the legal battle unfolds, it highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating digital platforms and protecting young users' privacy in the rapidly evolving landscape of social media.

โŽ Vice President Kamala Harris to Visit Las Vegas in Battleground State Tour

Vice President Kamala Harris, along with her soon-to-be-announced running mate, will visit Las Vegas next Saturday, August 10. This visit marks Harris's first stop in Nevada since she declared her candidacy for the presidential race.

Battleground State Tour

The Las Vegas stop is part of Harris's "Battleground State Tour," aimed at connecting with voters in pivotal states that will play a crucial role in determining the election's outcome. The tour includes visits to key cities across several states:

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • Eau Claire, Wisconsin

  • Detroit, Michigan

  • The Research Triangle, North Carolina

  • Savannah, Georgia

  • Phoenix, Arizona

The tour will culminate in Las Vegas, highlighting the importance of Nevada's six electoral votes in the upcoming election.

Running Mate Announcement

While Harris has yet to announce her running mate, the campaign has indicated that the announcement will come early next week. Among the potential candidates are:

  • Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

  • Arizona Senator Mark Kelly

  • Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

  • Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

The selection of a running mate is a critical decision for Harris as she seeks to bolster her campaign and appeal to a broad range of voters.

Importance of Nevada

This visit to Las Vegas is significant as it will be Harris's first since entering the presidential race. However, she has made six trips to Nevada this year, underscoring the state's importance as a battleground. Nevada's six electoral votes are seen as potentially decisive in a close election.

Harris's campaign strategy emphasizes personal engagement with voters in these crucial states. By visiting Nevada and other key locations, Harris aims to build momentum and secure support in areas that are likely to be hotly contested.

Campaign Strategy

The "Battleground State Tour" reflects a focused campaign strategy that targets regions with a history of swinging between parties in presidential elections. By prioritizing these states, Harris is positioning her campaign to maximize electoral gains where they matter most.

In each state, Harris and her running mate will participate in rallies, town halls, and community events to connect with voters and address their concerns directly. The campaign will emphasize issues such as economic recovery, healthcare access, and education reform, aiming to resonate with a diverse electorate.

Conclusion

Vice President Kamala Harris's upcoming visit to Las Vegas is a key component of her broader campaign strategy. As she and her yet-to-be-announced running mate embark on the "Battleground State Tour," they aim to engage voters in critical states, secure electoral votes, and ultimately, win the presidential election. Harris's choice of running mate and her continued focus on battleground states like Nevada will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of her campaign.
