๐Ÿ’Š Shine A Light to Host "Narcan at Night" Event to Combat Overdose Deaths

The homeless advocacy group Shine A Light is gearing up for a significant event aimed at preventing overdose deaths in the community. The event, titled "Narcan at Night," is organized in collaboration with the national group Mobilize Recovery and will take place on Saturday, September 28.

Addressing a Critical Issue

Robert Banghart, Outreach Director for the Shine A Light Foundation, highlighted the urgency of the situation. "We understand whatโ€™s going on on the ground floor. Iโ€™ve been to seven funerals this year so far and probably received 50 calls of people that have overdosed and people that weโ€™ve lost. And itโ€™s probably more than that, to be honest with you," he stated.

Event Details

During "Narcan at Night," teams will distribute kits containing free doses of Narcan, a medication that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. The kits will also include Fentanyl and Xylazine test strips, which can detect the presence of these dangerous substances in other drugs. The aim is to hand out between 8,000 and 12,000 doses of Narcan, with an overall goal of distributing up to 18,000 doses by the end of October, coinciding with the big Pride event.

Community Effort and Support

The event is supported by community partners who provide the necessary products. Shine A Light has backup plans to ensure they have enough Narcan, including potential trips to California to secure additional supplies with the help of partners like End Overdose.

Education and Outreach

In addition to distributing Narcan and test strips, the event aims to educate people about available services to treat addiction. Banghart shared his personal experience of homelessness and addiction, emphasizing the importance of outreach. "I was homeless, and I lived three blocks from the homeless corridor, and I had no idea where services were for the first year I was homeless; lost in my addiction. And I didnโ€™t even know where to go to get help. So, we have to go out into the community and spread the word," he said.

Commitment to the Community

Shine A Light's mission is clear: to help people and keep them alive. "We just want to help people. Thatโ€™s all we care about. We want to keep people alive because this is our community. The longer they stay alive the more likely they are to be connected to those services," Banghart added.

How to Help

For more information on donating or volunteering for the event, contact Robert Banghart at [email protected]. This initiative represents a crucial effort to combat the opioid crisis and support those in need within the community.

๐Ÿš— Turo Users Express Concerns Over New Las Vegas Airport Rules and Fees

Customers and car-rental hosts with Turo are voicing their concerns about new access rules and fees at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. These changes follow the recent approval of an agreement that allows Turo to operate at the airport.

New Rules and Fees

Under the new agreement, Turo hosts must drop off vehicles in a remote parking lot across from the Rent-A-Car Center. Travelers must take a bus to the center, walk to the crosswalk, and then proceed to the Remote Lot on Gillespie Street. This setup has caused frustration among users, especially those with children and luggage, who find the process cumbersome and inconvenient.

To avoid the long walk, some customers have been seen darting across the street, creating safety concerns. This arrangement is particularly jarring for regular Turo users from other cities where more convenient delivery options are available.

Impact on Hosts and Customers

The new rules have added an "airport fee" to each booking, which some hosts say is driving customers away. Erik Lizar, a Turo host, mentioned that the added fees have led to cancellations, as budget-conscious customers look for more affordable options.

โ€œMost people want the convenience of having a car delivered right to them. And they can do that in many other cities. And thatโ€™s what they want here in Vegas too,โ€ said Power Host David Army. He added that the current setup could become a "headache for everybody," particularly for families with children and luggage.

Before this arrangement, some hosts would park vehicles in economy parking structures for easy access. However, this is no longer permitted, and hosts who continue to do so face fines and tickets.

Turo's Response

A Turo spokesperson, Catherine Mejia, acknowledged the concerns raised by hosts and customers. Mejia stated that while the agreement represents progress, the current and future arrangements depend on the airport's decisions. Turo has proposed various alternatives to the airport, such as in-person exchanges similar to those available at LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Airport's Statement

The Clark County Board of Commissioners approved a two-year permit for Turo to operate from the Remote Lot. According to the Clark County Department of Aviation (CCDOA), Turo pays an operating fee amounting to 10 percent of its monthly gross revenue. This fee, however, is not imposed on the end-user. The CCDOA emphasized that all businesses at the airport are subject to fees to conduct operations.

Harry Reid International Airport clarified that the Remote Lot is easily accessible via the Rent-A-Car Center shuttle, which services Terminal 1 and 3.

Safety Concerns

In addition to logistical challenges, several users reported experiencing electric shocks from the ticketing machine at the Remote Lot's entrance. Erik Lizar's wife was significantly affected and required emergency medical services. Although airport officials investigated and found no faulty mechanisms, they have committed to re-examining the issue following additional complaints.

Conclusion

The new access rules and fees at Harry Reid International Airport have sparked concerns among Turo users and hosts. While the agreement marks a step forward for Turo's operations in Las Vegas, the current setup has highlighted significant challenges. Both Turo and the airport authorities are working to address these issues, with potential adjustments on the horizon to improve customer experience and safety.

๐Ÿก Las Vegas Valley Real Estate Market Stagnant with Homes Lingering on the Market

A new report from Redfin reveals that nearly 60 percent of homes for sale in the Las Vegas Valley have remained on the market for over a month. This trend highlights a sluggish real estate market characterized by a disconnect between home sellers and buyers.

Market Overview

Shay Stein, a Redfin real estate agent based in the valley, describes the market as "stagnant." She notes that while there are more listings available, many homes are either in poor condition or located in less desirable neighborhoods. Additionally, sellers are pricing their homes unrealistically high, leading to prolonged listing periods.

โ€œThere are more listings hitting the market, but a lot of them arenโ€™t in good condition or theyโ€™re not in a desirable neighborhood, and sellers are pricing unrealistically high,โ€ Stein explained. โ€œA lot of sellers are willing to let their home sit on the market until they get the price they want, and a lot of buyers arenโ€™t willing to pay sky-high prices when mortgage rates are still high.โ€

Market Statistics

As of the end of June, 59.4 percent of homes in the Las Vegas Valley had been on the market for more than a month, a slight decrease of 1.1 percent from the same period last year. Nationwide, however, the trend is quite different, with two-thirds of homes for sale remaining on the market for more than a month, marking a 60 percent increase from June of the previous year.

Despite the overall stagnation, more affordable homes in popular neighborhoods and fairly priced luxury homes are still attracting multiple offers and selling quickly. Las Vegas boasts the highest year-over-year increase in new listings among major metros at 17.5 percent, surpassing San Jose, which saw a 17.3 percent increase.

Redfin Report Insights

Redfin's report indicates that homes for sale are accumulating across the country. โ€œJune was the fourth straight month in which the portion of homes sitting on the market for at least one month ticked up on a year-over-year basis. Less-desirable listings are sitting on the market, causing unsold inventory to pile up,โ€ the report stated.

The median sale price for a single-family home in the valley currently stands at $450,000, a 7.2 percent increase from last year. However, home sales have dropped, with 875 homes sold as of June, representing a 14.5 percent decline from the same period last year. Last year was the worst year for real estate sales in the Las Vegas Valley since 2008, according to MLS statistics obtained by the Las Vegas Realtors.

Market Dynamics

The median number of days a home typically stays on the market in the valley is 37 days, a 3 percent decrease year-over-year. Interestingly, more than a quarter (27 percent) of homes sold in the valley are selling above the initial listing price, a 2.4 percent increase from last year. Conversely, 24.9 percent of homes sold have reduced their prices, a 2.3 percent increase from June 2023. On average, homes in the valley sell for about 1 percent below their initial list price.

Conclusion

The Las Vegas Valley real estate market is currently experiencing a period of stagnation, with a significant portion of homes lingering on the market due to unrealistic pricing and less desirable conditions. As sellers and buyers navigate this challenging landscape, the need for more realistic pricing and better-quality listings becomes increasingly apparent.
