๐ฆนโโ๏ธ Red Rock Resort Incident Leaves Three Injured, Suspect in Custody (Updated)
A shocking incident unfolded early Saturday morning at Red Rock Resort in Summerlin, resulting in two casino employees being stabbed and the suspect, Shayne Sussman, being shot by a security officer. The arrest report, made public on Tuesday, details a chaotic scene that began just after midnight.
Incident Overview
At approximately 1 a.m., security officers responded to reports of an assault in the lobby near T-Bones Chophouse, which was closed at the time. Upon arrival, officers found Sussman holding a bloody knife. The attack appeared to be unprovoked, with no clear motive identified in the initial investigation.
Victims and Suspect Details
The two injured employees sustained multiple stab wounds. One victim was stabbed in the shoulder and back, while the other suffered injuries to his shoulder, bicep, and face. Both victims were transported to University Medical Center for treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
Sussman, 25, appeared to be under the influence during the incident. When confronted by a security officer and asked to drop the knife, he fled through the casino. During the pursuit, Sussman swung the knife at an officer, nearly hitting him in the head. Another security officer then shot Sussman in the abdomen, subduing him. Sussman was also taken to University Medical Center and is expected to face charges of attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.
Surveillance Footage and Additional Details
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in piecing together the events leading up to the stabbing. The footage showed that Sussman arrived at the casino around 7 p.m. on Friday with a friend. Later that evening, around 11:45 p.m., an off-duty security officer observed two men exiting a restroom stall, discussing drug use. One of these men offered to sell cocaine and ketamine to the off-duty officer.
The off-duty officer encountered the same man again about 30 minutes later in the restroom, receiving another offer to purchase drugs. Shortly after 1 a.m., while at the Onyx Bar with his date, the off-duty officer heard the gunshot. Recognizing the suspect as the man who had offered him drugs, he ran towards the commotion.
Footage also captured Sussman slipping and falling on his back while descending stairs to the casinoโs back lobby prior to the stabbings. The first victim, operating a floor polishing machine, was attacked in a hallway near the back lobby. Sussman, who was yelling before the attack, returned to the lobby and encountered the second victim. This second employee, who had finished his shift and was heading home, found the first victim injured. He attempted to follow Sussman and was subsequently attacked.
After the stabbings, Sussman was seen heading towards T-Bones Chophouse, where he was eventually confronted and shot by security officers.
Legal Proceedings
Sussman now faces serious charges, including attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon. The investigation is ongoing as authorities review the surveillance footage and gather more details about the incident and Sussman's background.
๐ UNLV Football Team Practices at Raiders' Facility to Escape Heat
On Tuesday, the UNLV football team got a break from the sweltering heat, practicing at the Raiders' state-of-the-art Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson. This opportunity came after enduring near-110-degree temperatures at their own Fertitta Football Complex. The Raiders, currently in Costa Mesa, California for their own training camp, facilitated this venue change through coordination between Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan and UNLV Athletic Director Erick Harper.
Coach and Player Reactions
Second-year UNLV coach Barry Odom expressed gratitude for the change, noting the benefits of practicing in an air-conditioned environment. Sandra Douglass Morgan welcomed the team and encouraged them to excel this season under Odom's leadership.
Quarterback Competition
The practice highlighted the ongoing competition for the starting quarterback position. Coach Odom praised the quarterbacks for their leadership and performance, although no final decision has been made. Senior right tackle Tiger Shanks and senior center Jack Hasz shared their observations, noting the distinct leadership styles of Hajj Malik-Williams, a transfer from Campbell, and Matthew Sluka, a transfer from Holy Cross.
Upcoming Schedule
The Rebels face an important week ahead, with their first full-pad practice on Thursday and a closed scrimmage on Saturday.
๐ฒ Las Vegas Experts Weigh in on Recession Fears
In light of recent national recession concerns triggered by a weak jobs report and significant stock market losses, local economic experts advise Las Vegas residents to remain calm.
Market Rebound
On Tuesday, U.S. markets rebounded, restoring some stability after a period of significant volatility. The S&P 500 rose by 1%, breaking a three-day losing streak, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 294 points, or 0.8%. The Nasdaq composite also gained 1%. This recovery was driven by a range of factors, including Japanโs market surge, which helped offset previous losses.
Expert Analysis
Stephen Miller, research director at UNLVโs Center for Business and Economic Research, suggests that the stock market overreacted to the latest job data. "The labor report was not bad; it was just weaker than expected, and the unemployment rate went up," Miller explained. Despite the increase in the U.S. unemployment rate to 4.3% in July, Miller believes the economy is achieving a soft landing.
The Las Vegas Valleyโs unemployment rate was higher than the national average, at 6.2% in June. Miller highlighted that the Federal Reserve had been anticipating a rise in unemployment as a precursor to cutting interest rates.
Federal Reserve Actions
The Federal Reserve's current federal funds rate stands at 5.33%, a level maintained since August 2023. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has indicated a potential rate cut at the Fedโs next meeting on September 18. Analysts have called for an emergency rate cut in response to recent economic data.
Miller expects a rate cut of 50 basis points in September, with the possibility of additional cuts in December. Las Vegas-based mortgage adviser Matt Hennessy emphasized the impact of potential rate cuts on various consumer financing products. He noted that lower rates could reduce costs for credit cards, car loans, and home equity lines of credit, indirectly benefiting mortgage rates as well.
Housing Market Implications
According to Redfin, current mortgage rates for a 30-year fixed term are at 6.7%, down from May's five-month high of 7.2%. However, the elevated rates since 2022 have kept some homebuyers on the sidelines. Hennessy noted that a drop in mortgage rates could increase buyer activity, potentially driving up home prices and competition.
National Association of Realtors chief economist Lawrence Yun stated that the housing market is beginning to soften along with the economy. "Mortgage rates are plunging on the news of weak job growth and rising unemployment," Yun said. He also criticized the Fed for being slow to adjust its restrictive monetary policy in response to early signs of economic softening.
