๐ฆนโโ๏ธ Las Vegas Police Warn of Cyber Threats During Tech Conventions
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has issued a "cyber awareness advisory" in light of the Black Hat and DEF CON conventions currently being held in Las Vegas. These events are known hotspots for cyber attackers to test new techniques and tools on attendees, prompting the LVMPD to provide specific safety guidelines.
Key Guidelines for Attendees
The LVMPD advisory includes several precautionary measures:
Turn off all Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.
Lock devices when not in use.
Restart phones daily to remove any potential malware.
Avoid using credit cards or contactless payment methods.
Expert Advice
Shannon Wilkinson, Chief Technical Officer of Tego Cyber, a local cybersecurity company, echoed the LVMPDโs recommendations. She emphasized the vulnerability of phones to hacking on the Las Vegas Strip and advised turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to mitigate risks.
Hacker Recruitment and Challenges
Wilkinson highlighted that government agencies might recruit skilled hackers at DEF CON, and companies often challenge attendees to hack their products, sometimes offering rewards or trophies for successful attempts. She noted that hacking activities at these conventions are often more about reputation and competition rather than malicious intent.
Potential Targets
Wilkinson mentioned that digital screens at casinos and other venues could be targets for hackers, driven by the desire for recognition rather than financial gain. She specifically pointed out the Sphere as a potential high-profile target during the conventions, given its prominence and visibility.
Cyber Awareness for the Public
The LVMPD and cybersecurity experts urge the public to stay vigilant and follow recommended guidelines to protect their digital devices and personal information during the conventions. With Las Vegas being a focal point for cybersecurity professionals and hackers alike during these events, awareness and precaution are key.
๐ Aces Guard Leads U.S. Women's Basketball to Quarterfinal Win in Paris
In a strategic move to improve their game start, the U.S. women's basketball team replaced Diana Taurasi with Aces guard Jackie Young in the starting lineup. This change led to a strong beginning, resulting in an 88-74 victory over Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the Paris Games on Wednesday. The win extends the Americans' Olympic winning streak to 59 consecutive games.
Key Moments and Performances
Jackie Young: Young made the most of her starting opportunity, scoring 15 points and excelling defensively.
Aโja Wilson: The Aces star led the team with 20 points.
Breanna Stewart: Contributed 13 points to the victory.
Coach and Player Insights
Coach Cheryl Reeve explained the lineup change was based on evaluations since the WNBA All-Star Game. Taurasi, accepting her new role, emphasized that winning gold remains her primary focus. The team now prepares to face Australia in the semifinals on Friday, following Australia's 85-67 win over Serbia.
Game Highlights
The U.S. team took an early lead, with Young scoring five points before injuring her ankle. Taurasi subbed in and immediately hit a three-pointer. A strong second-quarter run, led by Wilson, Young, and Kelsey Plum, extended their lead to 52-33 at halftime. The Americans continued their dominance in the third quarter, ensuring no chance of a comeback for Nigeria.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
The U.S. women's team is two victories away from securing their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal, having not lost a game since the 1992 Barcelona Games. The game also saw attendance from notable Olympians like LeBron James and Michael Phelps, highlighting its significance.
โ Nevada Supreme Court Upholds Marijuana's Schedule I Classification
The Nevada Supreme Court has upheld the state's classification of marijuana as a Schedule I drug, aligning it with substances like heroin and LSD. This decision reverses an earlier ruling by District Judge Joe Hardy Jr., who had deemed the classification unconstitutional following the creation of the Cannabis Compliance Board in 2019.
Background and Ruling
In October 2022, Judge Hardy ruled against the Board of Pharmacy's classification of cannabis, a decision appealed by the Board. On Monday, the Supreme Court cited procedural issues and determined that the plaintiffs, Antoine Poole and the Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community (CEIC), lacked the standing to challenge the classification outside of a criminal case. The court's unanimous ruling did not address the constitutionality of the classification.
Reactions and Future Actions
Board of Pharmacy: Brett Kandt, the Board's general counsel, expressed confidence in the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the district court's ruling.
ACLU of Nevada: Executive Director Athar Haseebullah expressed disappointment that the court did not address the constitutionality of the classification. He indicated plans to continue challenging the issue, potentially collaborating with criminal defense attorneys for future legal battles.
Federal Developments and Local Impact
In April, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced plans to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III substance, potentially impacting Nevada's regulations. However, Kandt declined to comment on how this federal decision might affect the state's classification.
Haseebullah argued for removing marijuana from any scheduled drug list in Nevada, likening it to alcohol or tobacco. He highlighted the inconsistency of having state-approved consumption lounges while maintaining the Schedule I classification, which allows for prosecution under stringent drug laws.
