🏫 Clark County Kicks Off School Year with New Safety Measures for Students

As the new school year begins in Clark County on Monday, the community is urged to prioritize the safety of children traveling to and from school. With school zones back in effect, residents should be vigilant, as speed limits will be reduced to either 15 mph or 25 mph, depending on the area, and U-turns will be prohibited within these zones.

Last year, 138 incidents of children being struck by vehicles near schools were reported in the Clark County School District (CCSD), underscoring the critical need for caution. Pedestrian-vehicle injuries remain a leading cause of death among children aged 5 to 14, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft emphasized the importance of community awareness and cooperation in preventing such accidents. "This is a trend in the wrong direction in kids getting injured to and from school," Naft said, urging residents to take extra care during their commutes.

A significant safety enhancement this year is the introduction of crossing guards at middle schools in Las Vegas Valley, including areas in Clark County, Henderson, and North Las Vegas. This follows a 2022 investigation that found middle school students were most at risk of being involved in traffic accidents near schools. Naft, who played a key role in establishing the county’s Office of Traffic Safety, highlighted the importance of this measure in protecting students.

In addition to crossing guards, parents and caregivers are encouraged to educate children on pedestrian safety, such as using crosswalks, obeying traffic signals, and avoiding distractions while crossing streets. Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their commutes, adhere to school drop-off procedures, and exercise caution around school buses.

With the new school year beginning, the focus on safety is more important than ever to ensure that all children arrive at school and return home safely each day.

⚾ Raiders’ Adam Johnson Leads Paseo Verde to Little League World Series

Adam Johnson, manager of the Paseo Verde Little League team, is leading his players into an experience of a lifetime at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As Mountain Region champions, Paseo Verde will compete in the United States bracket, opening their tournament against the Metro champion, South Shore from Staten Island, New York.

Williamsport, a small town with a rich history, transforms into the epicenter of youth baseball each August. Johnson, who also works as the assistant equipment manager for the Las Vegas Raiders, is eager for his team to soak in every moment of this unique experience.

"We knew from the beginning that we had a special group," Johnson said. "Our goal was always to reach Williamsport, and now that we're here, it's about making memories and playing for each other."

Paseo Verde is only the third Nevada team to qualify for the Little League World Series, following in the footsteps of Mountain Ridge (2014) and Henderson (2022). Johnson credits the success of his team to their selflessness and team-first mentality, with every player contributing to their journey to the World Series.

Johnson's Raiders family has shown strong support, with coaches and players alike cheering him on. "I've been fortunate to be around very good people with the Raiders," Johnson said. "Their support has been incredible, and I'm very grateful."

As Paseo Verde prepares to take the field under the bright lights of Lamade Stadium, Johnson hopes to create lasting memories for his players, emphasizing the values of teamwork, character, and sportsmanship that Little League promotes.

🏞 Hoover Dam Ranked Among 'Most Overrated' But Remains a Top Attraction

Despite being ranked as the fourth-most overrated tourist attraction in the U.S. by a team of researchers from Jackpot City Casino, Hoover Dam remains a popular destination, drawing about 7 million visitors each year. The ranking, based on negative keywords found in TripAdvisor reviews, labeled the dam with terms like "overrated," "boring," and "tourist trap." However, Hoover Dam shares this distinction with prestigious sites like the Smithsonian Museums, which topped the same list.

Located on the Colorado River at the Nevada-Arizona border, Hoover Dam continues to be a must-see for many, offering daily tours and stunning views. Here’s what visitors should know:

  • Operating Hours: Hoover Dam is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  • Tours: Guided dam tours cost $30, while power plant tours are $15. The power plant tour is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers and includes views of the generators and a massive penstock pipe. The dam tour is more extensive and can only be purchased onsite.

  • Parking: There’s a $10 fee for parking in the garage on the Nevada side and surface parking for larger vehicles on the Arizona side. Upper lots on the Arizona side are free.

  • Crossing the Dam: Motorists can drive across Hoover Dam but should be cautious of pedestrians. Note that Arizona roads are not accessible from the dam.

  • Security: A checkpoint is located about a mile from the dam. Vehicles may be searched, and items like fireworks, weapons, and drones are prohibited.

  • Viewing Options: A free parking lot just past the security checkpoint provides access to the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, offering excellent views of the dam. The trail to the bridge is steep, with no water available, so visitors should be prepared for high temperatures and possible winds.

Even with its "overrated" label, Hoover Dam's historical significance and engineering marvel continue to attract millions, making it a worthy stop on any Nevada itinerary.

Kamala Harris Pushes for Tax-Free Tips in Nevada, Matching Trump’s Promise

At a rally at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to eliminate taxes on tips for service workers, echoing a similar promise made by Donald Trump during his own rally in the city in June. Both candidates have recognized the importance of this issue in Nevada, where the economy heavily depends on the service industry. Harris made the announcement as part of a broader commitment to support working families, including raising the minimum wage.

Trump quickly responded to Harris's pledge, accusing her of copying his policy and doubting her ability to deliver on the promise. Despite the overlap in their platforms, both candidates would need Congressional approval to enact such changes.

Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, wrapped up their battleground state tour in Nevada, where they aimed to energize voters, particularly within the Latino community. The Culinary Workers Union, representing 60,000 workers in Nevada's service industry, endorsed Harris, emphasizing the state's importance in the upcoming election.

The rally in Las Vegas drew over 12,000 attendees, with thousands more waiting outside in the intense heat. Harris used the opportunity to highlight her plans for immigration reform and her focus on supporting the middle class, hoping to build on the momentum her campaign has gained since President Joe Biden's exit from the race.
