🦹♂️ Red Rock Resort Stabbing Suspect Remains Jailed as Bail Hearing Looms
The man accused of stabbing two employees at Red Rock Resort in Summerlin remains in custody without bail following his court appearance on Monday. Shayne Sussman, 25, faces serious charges, including attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon, after allegedly attacking the casino workers in the early hours of August 3.
The violent incident unfolded around 1:20 a.m. in the casino's lobby area, where Sussman reportedly stabbed one employee in the shoulder and back, and another in the shoulder and bicep. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the violence.
Justice of the Peace Diana Sullivan presided over Sussman’s initial court appearance and ruled that bail would not be set until a formal bail hearing scheduled for next week. Until then, Sussman will remain in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.
The arrest report provides further details about the chaotic scene at Red Rock Resort. A security officer responded to reports of an assault in the lobby and encountered Sussman holding a knife covered in blood. Witnesses and authorities described Sussman as appearing to be under the influence of an unknown substance at the time. When the security officer instructed Sussman to drop the weapon, he reportedly refused and attempted to flee the scene.
The situation escalated quickly as another security guard intervened. Fearing for the safety of others, the guard shot Sussman in the abdomen, bringing him down and allowing for his arrest. Sussman received medical attention for his injuries before being taken into custody.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the Summerlin community, raising concerns about safety and the unpredictable nature of violent incidents in public spaces. Red Rock Resort, a popular destination in the area, has since increased security measures to reassure guests and employees.
The victims of the stabbing were treated for their injuries, and their current conditions have not been publicly disclosed. The casino has expressed its support for the affected employees, offering counseling and other resources to help them recover from the traumatic event.
As the case progresses, Sussman’s legal fate will be determined in the coming weeks. The upcoming bail hearing will likely be the first of many steps in a complex legal process that could see Sussman face significant prison time if convicted of the charges against him.
The Red Rock Resort incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for sudden violence, even in places where people gather for recreation and leisure. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbings, seeking to understand what led Sussman to commit such a violent act.
In the meantime, the community watches closely as the legal proceedings unfold, with many hoping for justice for the victims and a resolution to the disturbing events that have shaken the sense of safety in the Summerlin area.
⚾ Las Vegas Stadium Authority to Review Updated Lease for A's Planned $1.5B Ballpark
The Las Vegas Stadium Authority is set to unveil an updated draft of the Oakland Athletics' lease agreement for their planned $1.5 billion ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip during a meeting on Thursday. This lease agreement, originally introduced last year, is a crucial component of the A's planned relocation to Las Vegas and their projected debut in the city by 2028. The agreement, along with a draft non-relocation agreement, will both span 30 years, detailing the terms under which the A's will operate at the new ballpark after transferring ownership of the stadium and the 9-acre land it will occupy to the stadium authority.
The lease and non-relocation agreements are two of the four major agreements that must be finalized before the release of public funds for the ballpark’s construction. The other essential agreements include a community benefits agreement, already approved earlier this year, and a development agreement, which was introduced to the stadium authority in July.
In addition to these agreements, the Athletics must secure financing for the project. The current financial plan includes approximately $300 million in debt and up to $850 million in equity from the family of team owner John Fisher. The A’s are also seeking local investors who would acquire a minority stake in the team to further fund the stadium's construction. Any contributions from these investors would reduce the Fisher family's financial commitment to the project.
Sandy Dean, an executive with the A’s, stated last month that the team is likely to use $350 million of the $380 million in public funding allocated through Senate Bill 1. This bill, passed earlier this year, provides significant financial support for the ballpark's development.
Steve Hill, Chairman of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, indicated last month that the three outstanding agreements are expected to be refined over the coming months, with final approval anticipated in December.
🏎 Las Vegas Downtown Casinos Launch Free Festival Amid F1 Grand Prix to Attract Tourists
Downtown Las Vegas is gearing up to host a free festival during the city's second Formula One Grand Prix race, aimed at attracting tourists to the area and providing an alternative destination during the high-profile event. The festival, which will take place alongside the Formula One race scheduled for November 21-23, is being organized by downtown resort-casinos and partnering businesses as a way to draw visitors away from the Strip, which will be the epicenter of the racing event.
Derek Stevens, owner of The D, Golden Gate, and Circa casinos, is one of the driving forces behind the festival. He emphasized that the idea for the festival emerged as a strategy to bring more visitors downtown during the Formula One week. The festival’s website, launched just last week, has already received hundreds of vendor inquiries, signaling strong interest in the event.
Stevens acknowledged the tight timeline for organizing the festival but remains optimistic about its success. "There’s a lot of work to do in a short time period," he said in an interview on Monday. While the full entertainment lineup and culinary offerings have yet to be announced, initial details are expected to be revealed later this month.
The festival, dubbed the Neon City Festival, will feature performances across three stages on the Fremont Street Experience pedestrian mall and at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, a venue owned by Stevens. Additionally, the festival will include block parties, street festivals, and special food and drink offerings. Although the festival’s exact footprint is still being finalized, organizers are actively seeking feedback and participation from other downtown neighborhoods, including Fremont East and the Arts District. The Strat, a hotel and casino located at the border of the city and the Strip, is among the founding partners of the festival.
The Neon City Festival is set to run from Friday, November 22, through Sunday, November 24, coinciding with the Formula One race events on the Strip and a home game for the Raiders against the Denver Broncos at Allegiant Stadium on November 24. This festival aims to capitalize on the busy weekend by offering an event that appeals to a broad demographic, with activities and entertainment designed to engage visitors of all ages.
Jeff Victor, the festival’s CEO and former president of the Fremont Street Experience, highlighted the festival's ambition in a news release, stating, "During Neon City Festival, no matter where you are, your senses will be on overdrive." The festival is being supported through significant collaborations, including a $1 million sponsorship from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, $500,000 contributions from Fremont Street casino owners, and $100,000 in-kind contributions from downtown casinos not located on the pedestrian mall. For instance, The Plaza Hotel will be responsible for nightly fireworks, while Circa plans to bring in 400 Circa Sports book customers from other markets for the event.
Stevens expressed confidence that the festival will help address the underutilization of downtown resources that occurred during last year’s Grand Prix, noting, "We think this is something that’s going to bring a lot of new people to Vegas."
❎ Clark County Sets Over 100,000 Voters to Inactive Status, But They Can Still Vote in November
In a recent voter roll update, over 100,000 registered voters in Clark County, Nevada, have been classified as "inactive" after election officials were unable to confirm their residency at their registered addresses. Despite this status change, these voters will still be able to cast their ballots in the upcoming November elections, provided they still reside within the county. The shift to inactive status primarily affects the delivery of election-related materials, including mail-in ballots, which will be withheld until the affected voters update their addresses.
Routine Maintenance of Voter Rolls
The voter roll update, conducted on Wednesday, is part of Clark County's routine voter list maintenance that occurs every federal election year. During this process, the county sends out registration cards to all registered voters. If the U.S. Postal Service indicates that a voter has moved from the registered address or if non-forwardable election mail is returned as undeliverable, the county's Election Department then sends a forwardable postcard to the voter, requesting an address update.
Voters have 30 days to respond to this postcard. If no response is received, the voter’s status is changed to inactive. This year, the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office reported that 156,996 notices were sent out across the state, asking voters to confirm or update their addresses. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to ensure that voter rolls are accurate and up-to-date, a critical aspect of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
The Impact of Inactive Status
Being marked as inactive does not strip a voter of their ability to vote. As long as they remain residents of Clark County, inactive voters can still cast their ballots on election day or participate in early voting. However, their inactive status does mean they will not receive certain election materials by mail, such as voter information guides and mail-in ballots. This could potentially inconvenience voters who are unaware of their status or those who rely on mail-in voting.
The county emphasized the importance of this maintenance process, stating that it ensures all eligible, active voters receive the most current election information and critical mail in a timely manner. The voter roll cleanup is designed to prevent outdated or incorrect information from cluttering the voter rolls, which can lead to confusion and inefficiencies during elections.
Previous and Ongoing Cleanup Efforts
This isn’t the first time Clark County has undertaken such a significant voter roll cleanup. After the 2022 election, the county removed 60,740 voters from the rolls who had been marked inactive before the 2020 election and had not voted since. These actions are part of a broader, ongoing effort to keep voter rolls accurate and reflective of the current population.
As of Monday afternoon, Clark County reported that it has 1.37 million registered voters. With the general election approaching, the county is urging residents to verify their voter status and update their information if necessary. Those who find themselves marked as inactive can easily update their address or challenge their status through the county’s registered voter services department. Additionally, residents can contact the Election Department directly by calling 702-455-VOTE (8683) for assistance.
The Importance of Accurate Voter Rolls
The accuracy of voter rolls is a cornerstone of the electoral process. By ensuring that only eligible, active voters receive election materials and are able to cast their ballots, Clark County aims to protect the integrity of its elections. The list maintenance process helps prevent potential issues such as the misallocation of ballots and the confusion that can arise from sending election information to outdated or incorrect addresses.
For voters, staying informed about their registration status is crucial. With election day approaching, voters are encouraged to check their status well in advance to ensure they can participate without any issues. Clark County provides several resources to help voters verify and update their information, ensuring that all eligible residents can exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election.
In summary, while the recent update to Clark County’s voter rolls has resulted in over 100,000 voters being marked as inactive, the county is working to ensure that all eligible residents can still participate in the November election. The voter roll maintenance process is a routine but vital part of safeguarding the electoral system, ensuring that all active voters receive the information and materials they need to cast their ballots efficiently and accurately.
