💲 Nevada Unemployment Rises to 5.4% Amid Hospitality Sector Job Losses
Nevada's unemployment rate experienced a slight uptick in July, driven primarily by shifts in the state's crucial hospitality sector, according to a report released by state economists on Thursday.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Nevada rose by 0.2 percentage points, reaching 5.4 percent, as detailed in the latest report from the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). This increase coincided with a modest reduction of 1,500 nonfarm jobs across the state.
The job losses were largely concentrated in the leisure and hospitality industries, which are vital to Nevada's economy. Specifically, the accommodation and food services sectors shed 4,000 jobs over the month, a decline that state officials attributed to significant changes in the market. The closure of the Mirage hotel-casino in mid-July played a major role in this downturn, impacting employment across multiple related sectors.
"Nevada’s labor market softened in July, as unemployment increased again and employment declined slightly over the month," said David Schmidt, DETR’s chief economist, in a news release. "This decline was concentrated in the leisure and hospitality sector, which fell by 5,000 jobs from June to July, while most other industries grew, leading to an overall decline of 1,500 jobs over the month. It is possible that this estimate was affected by the closure of the Mirage, which closed on July 17, impacting the casino-hotel, food services, and casino support industries."
The Las Vegas metropolitan area, which is heavily dependent on tourism and hospitality, saw a reduction of approximately 300 jobs between June and July. Despite this recent dip, the Las Vegas area has demonstrated resilience over the past year, adding about 38,100 jobs to the labor force since July 2023, reflecting a growth rate of 3.4 percent. This indicates that, while there was a short-term decline, the region has been experiencing longer-term job growth.
Similarly, the Reno and Carson City metropolitan areas reported slight decreases in their total labor forces. Reno saw a loss of 300 jobs, or 0.1 percent of its workforce, while Carson City experienced a reduction of 200 jobs, or 0.6 percent. These figures suggest that the job market challenges are not confined to Las Vegas but are affecting other regions of the state as well, albeit on a smaller scale.
On a national level, policymakers are closely monitoring trends in job growth and unemployment as they consider the broader economic outlook. Inflation has slowed year-over-year, and hiring has also decelerated, both of which are key indicators of the country’s economic health. These trends have sparked discussions about the potential for the Federal Reserve to consider an interest rate cut in September, as they seek to balance the goals of managing inflation and supporting economic growth.
As Nevada's economy navigates these changes, the state's reliance on the hospitality sector underscores the importance of continued diversification and resilience planning, particularly as external factors like major hotel-casino closures can have a significant impact on employment figures.
🏈 Raiders’ Preseason Woes: Minshew and O’Connell Fail to Impress in Loss to Cowboys
Antonio Pierce, in his first training camp as the Las Vegas Raiders head coach, set a clear challenge for his quarterbacks: Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew. He wanted one of them to step up and make it evident that they were the right choice to lead the team as the starting quarterback.
However, two preseason games in, neither quarterback has seized the opportunity. Their performances have been underwhelming, leaving the starting quarterback role very much undecided. This ongoing uncertainty was highlighted during the Raiders’ 27-12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in their second preseason game at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday. The competition between O’Connell and Minshew remains tight, but not for the reasons Pierce had hoped.
“Everybody wants to see a player just take it and say, ‘I’m your guy,’” Pierce remarked after the game. “Obviously, that’s probably not the case. Right?”
With time running out before the season opener, Pierce faces a tough decision. “We’re gonna have to make a decision and we’re gonna live with it,” he said. “And we’re gonna support whoever that quarterback is for the Raiders going forward.”
The Raiders will close out the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers at 7 p.m. on Friday. However, none of the Raiders' starters, including the quarterbacks, are expected to play in that game. The focus now shifts to the regular season, with the Raiders set to open on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 8.
Three Takeaways from Saturday’s Preseason Loss:
1. Not Minshew’s Night
Coming into Saturday’s game, Gardner Minshew had slightly outperformed Aidan O’Connell, and the Raiders gave the veteran a full opportunity to stake his claim against the Cowboys. Minshew played the entire first quarter and got two drives in the second quarter. Despite these opportunities, Minshew failed to deliver.
He managed one impressive play, a 48-yard completion to second-year wide receiver Tre Tucker, but struggled otherwise. Minshew completed 10 of his 21 passes for 95 yards, and the Raiders could only muster three points while he was on the field. His performance was particularly disappointing given that he was facing the Cowboys' second-string defense.
“Not good enough,” Minshew admitted when asked to assess his performance. “I had some missed throws. A missed read, I think. I think we shot ourselves in the foot a lot tonight. Anytime you do that, you’re going to have a hard night.”
2. O’Connell Spoils a Decent Outing
Aidan O’Connell appeared to be making a case for the starting job when he entered the game. He was solid after taking over for Minshew in the second quarter and was leading a promising drive for the Raiders as the fourth quarter began. However, things took a turn for the worse.
Facing a second-and-16 from the Cowboys’ 35-yard line, O’Connell threw a pass intended for tight end Harrison Bryant. The ball was intercepted by Cowboys cornerback Kemon Hall, who returned it for a touchdown, extending Dallas’ lead to 20-12.
“Playing bad ball, you’re gonna pay for it,” O’Connell reflected after the game.
Despite completing 14 of his 20 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, the pick-6 overshadowed what could have been a strong performance. O’Connell described his night as “up and down,” acknowledging that while he did some good things, the interception left a bitter aftertaste. “I definitely did some good things,” he said. “But missed some throws, missed some reads too. And obviously, the pick-6 lingers in your mind.”
3. Tucker Comes Through
Tre Tucker has shown significant growth in his second NFL training camp, emerging as a bright spot for the Raiders. Tucker’s 48-yard catch on Saturday was his second reception of at least 40 yards in the preseason. He also delivered a 43-yard punt return against the Cowboys, adding to his list of explosive plays.
The Raiders have been vocal about Tucker’s potential throughout the offseason, and he’s starting to deliver on that promise. He has added strength to his frame and improved his precision as a route runner. His offseason LASIK eye surgery has also helped him better track the ball in the air.
The Raiders hope that Tucker’s impressive preseason performances are just a glimpse of what he can bring to the team in the regular season.
🚗 Las Vegas Strip Hotels Are Safest from Car Theft?
Despite offering free parking, Circus Circus and other properties on the Las Vegas Strip are experiencing a surge in car thefts, but this isn't due to the availability of free parking, according to Officer Robert Wicks of the Metropolitan Police Department.
"This has nothing to do with free parking or valuables left inside the car. This isn’t a crime of opportunity," Wicks emphasized. Instead, he explained that thieves are specifically targeting certain vehicles. "They’re looking for models that they know how to obtain without keys."
Parking lots and garages on the Strip are prime targets for these criminals because they allow thieves to scan a large number of cars quickly, searching for the specific models they can steal with relative ease. The concentration of vehicles in these areas increases the likelihood of finding a target, making these locations hot spots for auto theft.
Strip Properties with the Lowest Motor Vehicle Theft Rates
When it comes to motor vehicle thefts on the Strip, not all properties are affected equally. Since 2019, Encore has reported 12 motor vehicle thefts, while Wynn has seen 32. These figures highlight that while theft does occur, some properties are more prone to these incidents than others.
Interestingly, Trump International Hotel has recorded the lowest number of motor vehicle thefts, with just six reported incidents in the past five years. This could suggest that some properties have more effective security measures or that their parking facilities are less attractive to thieves.
Tips to Prevent Car Theft
To help car owners reduce the risk of theft, the Metropolitan Police Department offers several safety tips. Locking your vehicle is the most straightforward and effective measure, reducing the chances of auto theft by 60 percent, according to Metro. However, there are additional steps you can take to further protect your vehicle.
Metro’s website recommends rolling up windows, removing keys from inside the vehicle, and installing anti-theft devices. These devices can include steering wheel locks, remote fuel pump cutoff alarms, ignition cutoff switches, hood locks, and motion-sensing devices.
Another important tip is to avoid leaving your car in unattended parking lots for extended periods. Thieves are less likely to target vehicles in busier parking lots where there’s a higher chance of being noticed.
What to Do If Your Car Is Stolen
If you become a victim of auto theft, it's crucial to act quickly. Metro advises filing a report with the police as soon as possible. You should also contact your insurance company and provide them with detailed information about your vehicle, including the year, make, model, color, license plate number, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
By following these precautions and knowing what steps to take in the event of a theft, you can help protect your vehicle and reduce the likelihood of becoming an auto theft statistic on the Las Vegas Strip.
🥢 China Mama Expands to Palace Station, Opening Fourth Las Vegas Location
China Mama, a beloved staple of the Las Vegas dining scene, is expanding its presence with a new location at Palace Station, as announced by Station Casinos on Thursday. The new restaurant is set to open this fall, adding to the growing number of China Mama eateries in the city.
The new China Mama location will take the place of Boathouse Asian Eatery, which is set to close its doors after service on September 1. According to Station Casinos, the decision to replace Boathouse Asian Eatery comes after the company ended its management agreement with the restaurant.
China Mama has been a fixture in Las Vegas for years, known for its authentic Chinese cuisine that has garnered a loyal following. The original location on South Jones Boulevard, however, suffered a setback in late March 2023 when it was forced to close due to an early morning fire. Despite this, the restaurant's commitment to serving its customers remained strong.
In May 2023, China Mama made a comeback with the opening of China Mama Express, a takeout-only spot on South Rainbow Boulevard, allowing fans of the restaurant to continue enjoying their favorite dishes. Shortly after, in June 2023, the sit-down China Mama reopened in a new location at Shanghai Plaza in Chinatown, a bustling area known for its rich array of Asian dining options. The new location sits in the same center as ShangHai Taste, another popular eatery, continuing China Mama's tradition of offering an authentic and immersive dining experience.
But the expansion didn’t stop there. In May, China Mama launched a higher-end dining experience with the opening of Spring by China Mama on Paradise Road. This restaurant focuses on an elevated culinary experience, featuring Chinese pancakes assembled tableside with a variety of fillings and condiments. Located in the same center as Ferraro’s Ristorante, Spring by China Mama offers a more refined take on traditional Chinese cuisine, catering to diners looking for something a bit more upscale.
The upcoming China Mama at Palace Station will be the fourth restaurant in the group, further solidifying the brand’s presence in Las Vegas. This expansion follows the trend of other family-owned businesses like Lindo Michoacan, which also opened a new location at Palace Station earlier this year.
As China Mama continues to grow, it remains a testament to the resilience and popularity of family-owned restaurants in Las Vegas. With each new location, the brand brings a piece of its culinary heritage to more diners, contributing to the city’s vibrant and diverse food scene.
