Las Vegas Gas Prices

⛽ Las Vegas Gas Prices Remain Steady, Lower Than Last Year’s Highs

Gasoline prices in the Las Vegas metro area have remained relatively stable over the past several weeks, offering some relief to drivers compared to the record highs seen last summer. As of August 19, the average price of regular unleaded gas in Las Vegas stands at $3.93 per gallon, slightly below the Nevada state average of $3.95, according to AAA data.

Year-Over-Year Decline in Prices

This year’s gas prices are about 45 cents lower than they were at the same time in 2022. The current price represents a 10.4% decrease from last year when gas prices soared due to a combination of supply chain disruptions, increased demand, and geopolitical tensions. The decline in prices this year is a welcome change for many residents and travelers in the area.

Seasonal Trends and Future Outlook

The stability in gas prices is expected to continue as we move toward the fall. With the summer travel season winding down and the transition to winter-blend gasoline less than a month away, prices are likely to drop further. Winter-blend gasoline is cheaper to produce than its summer counterpart, which could help ease prices at the pump even more.

Patrick De Haan, a leading analyst at GasBuddy, noted that with the shift to winter gasoline and cooler weather approaching, gas prices are expected to “begin their seasonal cooling off” in line with decreasing travel demand.

Impact of Hurricane Ernesto

Another factor contributing to the stable gas prices is the recent trajectory of Hurricane Ernesto, which veered away from the U.S. this week. Had the storm impacted key oil and gas infrastructure along the Gulf Coast, drivers could have faced significant price hikes. Fortunately, the hurricane spared these vital areas, allowing prices to remain steady.

Diesel Prices Also Declining

In addition to regular gasoline, diesel prices in the Las Vegas area have also seen a significant year-over-year decrease. As of August 19, the average price for diesel is $3.82 per gallon, which is 89 cents lower than the same time last year—a drop of nearly 19%. This is a significant relief for industries and consumers relying on diesel fuel, especially considering that diesel prices hit a historical high of $6.03 per gallon in June 2022.

Historical Context

While current gas prices are much lower than last year’s peaks, they are still a far cry from the cheapest prices seen in past years. The highest recorded price for regular gasoline in Las Vegas was $5.61 per gallon on June 16, 2022, during the height of last summer's price surge.

As we head into the fall, drivers in Las Vegas and across Nevada can expect further reductions in fuel costs, continuing a trend that has brought some financial relief to motorists in 2023.

⚾ Paseo Verde Advances to U.S. Semifinals in Little League World Series with 3-2 Win Over Central East Maui

Paseo Verde’s Little League team from Henderson, Nevada, has secured a spot in the U.S. semifinals of the Little League World Series after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Central East Maui of Wailuku, Hawaii. The game, held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, showcased the importance of paying attention to the small details—a lesson that Paseo Verde coach Adam Johnson has emphasized to his players throughout the season.

Early Tensions and Missed Opportunities

The game got off to a tense start, with Central East Maui immediately putting pressure on Paseo Verde in the bottom of the first inning. The West Region champions placed runners on the corners with no outs, thanks to singles from Gauge Pacheco and Evan Tavares. However, Paseo Verde’s starting pitcher, Gunnar Gaudin, demonstrated remarkable poise under pressure, retiring the next three batters to escape the inning without allowing a run.

Paseo Verde had their own chance to score early in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out. The team managed to take a 1-0 lead on a single down the third-base line by Luke Lentz. However, a golden opportunity to extend the lead slipped away as Dominic Laino was thrown out at home plate trying to score on the play.

A Back-and-Forth Battle

As the game progressed, Gaudin found his rhythm, cruising through the third inning with just seven pitches and retiring the first two batters in the fourth. But Central East Maui was not ready to concede, as Tavares reached base with a two-out single and scored on a double by Brextyn Kamaha’o Hong, tying the game at 1-1.

In the fifth inning, Paseo Verde capitalized on two Central East Maui errors to retake the lead. Liam Sparks brought in a run with an RBI fielder’s choice, putting Paseo Verde up 2-1. Yet, the Hawaii team quickly responded, tying the game again at 2-2 on a groundout by Kellen Takamura after collecting two hits in the bottom of the fifth.

The Decisive Sixth Inning

The top of the sixth inning proved to be the turning point for Paseo Verde. Entering the inning with the game tied 2-2, Paseo Verde managed to put two runners on base through consecutive walks. Wyatt Erickson, facing an 0-2 count, fouled off three tough pitches before being hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Noah Letalu drew a crucial walk, bringing home the go-ahead run and giving Paseo Verde a 3-2 lead.

“The whole inning was well played,” Coach Johnson said after the game. “Wyatt was in an 0-2 hole and fouled off all those pitches. He understood what he needed to do to give us an opportunity.”

Gaudin’s Clutch Performance

Despite showing signs of fatigue, Gaudin was determined to finish what he started. Coach Johnson never considered pulling his ace, trusting him to close out the game. Gaudin delivered, though not without drama, as Central East Maui threatened one last time. After Gaudin allowed runners on the corners, the game ended in a dramatic and somewhat fluky fashion. Kamalei Leynes-Santos was caught in a rundown after hesitating on a dropped third strike, leading to a game-ending double play.

“Gunnar is one of the kids who got us here,” Johnson said, praising his pitcher’s resilience. “He’d earned the right to go back out there for the sixth.”

Gaudin finished with a complete-game victory, allowing nine hits while striking out five. His performance was in line with Paseo Verde’s recent strong pitching, as the team’s staff has allowed just three runs over their last five games.

“It’s fun for me,” Gaudin said about pitching in high-pressure situations. “I think I thrive in these situations. It’s not all me. I give credit to my dad, my coaches, and my team for being behind me.”

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Paseo Verde improves to 2-0 in the Little League World Series and advances to the semifinals of the double-elimination U.S. bracket. They will face the Southwest Region champion, Boerne (Texas), on Wednesday at noon. The winner of that game will earn a spot in the U.S. title game, bringing them one step closer to a chance at the Little League World Series Championship.

As Paseo Verde continues its run, Coach Johnson’s emphasis on detail and teamwork will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of their approach. “We try to do all the little things right,” Johnson said. “Some things slipped through the cracks today, but when that happened, the guys picked each other up. We’ll take this win and move forward.”

Paseo Verde’s journey has been defined by resilience, strong pitching, and timely hitting. As they prepare for their next challenge, the team from Henderson is proving that attention to detail can indeed make the difference between winning and losing on the biggest stage in youth baseball.

President Joe Biden Receives Hero’s Welcome at Democratic National Convention, Paves Way for Successor in Stirring Address

On the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, President Joe Biden was met with overwhelming applause and a standing ovation as he stepped onto the stage. The evening was charged with excitement and anticipation, as Biden delivered a significant address that not only reflected on his presidency but also served as a symbolic handoff to the candidate he has endorsed to succeed him in the White House.

A Night of Celebration and Reflection

The convention, held amidst a crucial election season, was designed to showcase the strength and unity of the Democratic Party. Biden’s speech was a focal point of the evening, drawing attention to the successes and challenges of his administration while setting the stage for the party’s future. The president, who has often spoken about the importance of continuity and building on progress, used this moment to underline the achievements made during his time in office.

“Tonight, we celebrate the strides we’ve made together,” Biden said, his voice filled with emotion as he looked out over the crowd. “But more importantly, we look ahead to the future, to the work that still needs to be done. The challenges we face are significant, but so too is our resolve.”

Endorsing His Successor

Biden’s address was also a clear and emphatic endorsement of his chosen successor, who will carry the Democratic banner into the upcoming presidential election. While Biden did not shy away from discussing the difficulties his administration has faced, from the global pandemic to economic challenges and political polarization, he focused on the progress made in areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, and climate change. His speech painted a picture of a country on the right track, but one that needs continued leadership to keep moving forward.

“I am confident in the person who will take up this mantle,” Biden stated, his tone resolute. “This individual has the experience, the vision, and the integrity to lead our nation through the challenges ahead. Together, we can build on the foundation we’ve laid, and ensure a brighter future for all Americans.”

The president’s successor, whose identity has been the subject of much speculation and debate within political circles, was hailed by Biden as the best choice to continue the work of his administration. Biden’s words were not just a personal endorsement but also a call to action for the Democratic base to unite behind the party’s nominee.

A Moment of Unity

The reaction from the convention attendees was one of unreserved enthusiasm. The hero’s welcome Biden received underscored the deep respect and support he enjoys within the Democratic Party. His speech, filled with references to unity and common purpose, was designed to galvanize the party faithful and to present a united front as the election approaches.

The convention itself was a showcase of Democratic solidarity, with speakers from various wings of the party emphasizing themes of cooperation and collective action. Biden’s address was the culmination of the evening’s events, serving as both a capstone to his presidency and a rallying cry for the party’s future efforts.

Looking to the Future

As Biden concluded his speech, the message was clear: the Democratic Party is ready to move forward, building on the achievements of the past while tackling the challenges of the future. The president’s endorsement of his successor was a pivotal moment, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the party’s history.

“Together, we’ve made incredible progress,” Biden said in his closing remarks. “But our work is not finished. The road ahead is long, but with the right leadership, we can continue to move this country forward. I’m counting on all of you to stand with us, to fight with us, and to believe in the promise of America.”

The speech, widely regarded as one of Biden’s most important addresses, set the tone for the remainder of the convention. It not only solidified his legacy but also provided a clear and compelling vision for the future of the Democratic Party as it prepares for the battles ahead in the upcoming election.

The night ended with a rousing round of applause, as Biden exited the stage to chants of support, leaving no doubt that the party remains firmly behind him and the candidate he has chosen to lead the next chapter.

🌕 Astronomers Shrug at Monday’s ‘Super Blue Moon,’ Point to More Exciting Space Discoveries

Monday’s much-anticipated "super blue moon" may sound like a celestial spectacle, but according to astronomers, it’s not quite as remarkable as the hype suggests. Despite the name, the moon won’t actually appear blue, and its slightly larger size may not even be noticeable to most casual observers.

What’s in a Name?

The term “super moon” refers to a full moon that occurs when the moon is at perigee, its closest point to Earth in its orbit. This makes the moon appear about 7% larger and 15% brighter than a typical full moon. While this is technically true, the difference is subtle, and only dedicated skywatchers are likely to spot the variance.

“If you’re really into astronomy, you’ll notice. But the word ‘super’ used to be reserved for things that were significant,” said Andrew Fraknoi, a seasoned astronomy professor who has taught in the Bay Area for 30 years. He views the term “super moon” as somewhat exaggerated when used in this context.

The “blue moon” part of the name also leads to misconceptions. Despite the poetic label, the moon will not actually change color. It remains its usual gray and white, unless atmospheric conditions like volcanic eruptions or heavy pollution alter its appearance. The term “blue moon” typically refers to the second full moon within a calendar month, which isn’t the case this time around. Instead, Monday’s moon is what’s known as a “seasonal blue moon,” the third of four full moons in a single season—a less commonly used definition.

What’s Really Happening in Space

While the super blue moon garners headlines, astronomers are more excited about other groundbreaking developments in space exploration. For instance, China recently returned the first-ever samples from the far side of the moon, providing fresh material that could offer new insights into the moon’s composition and history.

Mars also made news this week with the discovery of a significant underground reservoir of liquid water, detected deep beneath the planet’s surface. This find, reported by a team of geophysicists from UC Berkeley, including Michael Manga, could reshape our understanding of Mars’ geological history and offer clues about the potential for life on the Red Planet.

Further afield, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has identified a surprising number of carbon-containing molecules around a young, low-mass star, opening up new avenues of research into the atmospheric chemistry of distant worlds. These discoveries are far more scientifically significant, according to Fraknoi, who expressed amazement at the progress being made in the field.

The Moon’s Enduring Appeal

While the super blue moon might not live up to its sensationalized title, it’s still an event worth stepping outside to appreciate. “A full moon – even when it’s not super or blue — is always lovely to behold,” Fraknoi noted.

But for those truly fascinated by the cosmos, this year has offered far more thrilling developments. “There are so many truly exciting things going on in astronomy,” Fraknoi said. “These are things I never thought I’d see in my career.”

As the night sky draws our gaze, it’s clear that while the moon remains a beloved fixture, the real excitement lies in the ongoing exploration of the vast universe beyond.
