🏫 Clark County Issues Initial Short-Term Rental Licenses Amid Long Wait for Many
Clark County has begun issuing a limited number of short-term rental licenses, but hundreds of prospective operators are still anxiously waiting for their chance to legally rent out their properties. As of now, county officials have issued just three licenses across unincorporated areas of the county, which includes key neighborhoods and corridors like the Las Vegas Strip, Paradise Township, the Southwest Valley, and parts of Summerlin. In contrast, cities like Las Vegas and Henderson have their own systems for licensing and regulating short-term rentals within their jurisdictions.
The Lottery System and Application Process
In March 2023, Clark County implemented a lottery system to determine the order in which applications for short-term rental licenses would be reviewed. Over 1,300 names were drawn in this lottery, setting the stage for what has become a lengthy and complex process. Since then, county officials have been working through the drawn names, accepting and reviewing applications, extending deadlines, and moving eligible applicants forward in the licensing process.
For some, like Rachael Gore, who was drawn as "number 10" in the lottery, the process has finally yielded results. After waiting 17 months since the lottery, Gore, a sixth-grade teacher, has received her license. "It’s so bittersweet, because I know there are so many people still waiting, and they have no idea how long they’re going to be waiting either," she said, reflecting on the long wait. For Gore, the ability to legally rent out her property is a crucial means to supplement her income in Las Vegas' challenging housing market.
However, for others whose names were drawn much later in the lottery, the wait remains uncertain and stressful. Louis Koorndyk, who is battling cancer, had his properties drawn in the 900s and 1,200s. "I’m trying to still look towards the future. I understand I don’t have that much time," Koorndyk expressed, highlighting the anxiety that many prospective licensees face.
Ongoing Delays and Criticism
The slow pace of the licensing process has drawn criticism from many applicants and stakeholders. Clark County's spokesperson addressed these concerns by emphasizing the need for thorough review and due diligence as required by the county's code. "There are factors that impact the timeliness of this process, such as applicants submitting fees timely and getting their inspections scheduled," the spokesperson explained.
Applicants must pay a $150 inspection fee to the Fire Department and complete an inspection as part of the licensing process. Currently, there are 16 homeowners awaiting their inspections, a critical step before they can receive their licenses.
The Push for Expediency
The Greater Las Vegas Short-Term Rental Association has called on Clark County to expedite the process, citing the frustration and financial strain many prospective licensees face. According to spokesperson Jackie Flores, some applicants have dropped out of the process altogether, while others have resorted to listing their properties illegally just to make ends meet.
This year alone, Clark County has issued 561 citations for illegal short-term rentals, underscoring the ongoing challenges and the high demand for legal rental operations.
The Background and Future of the Ordinance
The current licensing process stems from a 2021 legislative mandate that required cities and counties to create a framework for regulating and licensing short-term rentals. In the summer of 2022, Clark County responded by creating an ordinance to allow these rentals to operate legally, but the path to full implementation has been slow and fraught with delays.
As the county continues to work through the backlog of applications, many prospective rental operators are left in limbo, uncertain of when—or if—they will be able to legally rent out their properties. The situation highlights the complexities and challenges of balancing regulation with the economic needs of residents, particularly in a region as dynamic and tourism-driven as Las Vegas.
With hundreds still waiting, the county faces increasing pressure to streamline the process and provide clarity to those who have been waiting for months, or even years, to operate legally.
🏈 Gardner Minshew Begins First Practice as Raiders' Starting Quarterback
Just two days after being officially named the Raiders’ starting quarterback, Gardner Minshew took the field at Allegiant Stadium on Tuesday night, stepping into his new role as the undisputed leader of the team's offense. Minshew, known for his competitive spirit and on-field charisma, led his first practice with the authority and confidence expected of a starting QB.
This practice marks a significant moment for the Raiders as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. Minshew, who has been battling for the starting position throughout training camp and the preseason, now faces the challenge of solidifying his role and building chemistry with his teammates. His promotion to starting quarterback underscores the coaching staff's confidence in his abilities to guide the team’s offense and execute their game plan.
Minshew’s journey to becoming the Raiders' starting quarterback has been marked by perseverance and consistent performance. As he steps into this leadership position, all eyes will be on how he commands the huddle, connects with his receivers, and manages the offense under the pressures of the NFL.
The practice at Allegiant Stadium was an important opportunity for Minshew to begin establishing himself as the team’s leader on the field. With the regular season fast approaching, the Raiders are counting on Minshew to bring stability and success to the quarterback position as they aim to compete in the highly competitive AFC West.
As the Raiders continue their preparations, Minshew's performance in these practices will be crucial in setting the tone for the season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he adapts to his new role and leads the Raiders' offense into the 2024 NFL season.
❎ Former President Donald Trump to Return to Las Vegas for First Time Since Assassination Attempt
Former President Donald Trump is set to return to Las Vegas on Friday, marking his first appearance in the city since surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania earlier this year. The visit is part of Trump's ongoing campaign efforts as he seeks to bolster support in key states ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Trump will speak at the restaurant Il Toro E La Capra, located at 6435 S. Decatur Blvd., at noon on Friday. According to his campaign staff, the former president plans to focus on his campaign promise to eliminate taxes on tips, a proposal that has resonated strongly with workers in Las Vegas' hospitality industry. The initiative is seen as a crucial component of Trump’s economic platform, particularly in a city where a significant portion of the workforce relies on tips as a major part of their income.
Although Trump will be present, his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, will not attend the event. Vance has been a key figure in Trump’s campaign, but his absence at this particular event has not been explained by the campaign team.
Recent Context and Security Concerns
Trump's visit to Las Vegas comes after a period of heightened security and concern following an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. The attempt on his life earlier this year shocked the nation and led to increased security measures at all of his public appearances. Despite the incident, Trump has continued to campaign vigorously, emphasizing his resilience and determination to lead the country.
Trump’s Last Las Vegas Visit
Trump's last visit to the Las Vegas Valley was on June 7 at Sunset Park, where he addressed a large crowd of supporters. That event was part of a broader effort to galvanize his base in Nevada, a crucial swing state in the upcoming election. His return to Las Vegas is seen as an effort to maintain momentum and keep his supporters energized as the campaign intensifies.
The Timing of the Event
Trump's appearance in Las Vegas this week is strategically timed to coincide with the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where the Democratic Party is expected to formally nominate its presidential candidate, Vic Franklin. By holding an event on the same day, Trump aims to draw attention away from the Democratic proceedings and reinforce his presence in the national political landscape.
The Las Vegas event is expected to draw significant media coverage, particularly given the city's importance in the election and the dramatic context of Trump’s recent challenges. The focus on eliminating taxes on tips is likely to resonate with many in Nevada’s service-oriented economy, potentially giving Trump an edge with a crucial voter demographic.
Looking Ahead
As Trump continues to navigate the challenges of his campaign, his return to Las Vegas serves as a reminder of his commitment to key issues that directly impact the lives of many Americans. The proposal to nix taxes on tips, if enacted, could have a profound effect on workers in cities like Las Vegas, where the hospitality industry plays a central role in the local economy.
With the 2024 election looming, Trump’s Las Vegas event will be closely watched, not only for its content but also for the reaction it garners from both supporters and detractors. As the campaign progresses, Trump’s ability to connect with voters on issues like taxation and economic policy will be critical to his success in the race for the White House.
🗿 Seven Magic Mountains to Be Relocated to Washoe County Amid Airport Expansion
Seven Magic Mountains, the vibrant art installation that has become a visual icon of the Las Vegas desert, may soon find a new home in Washoe County. This relocation plan comes after the Washoe County Board of Commissioners voted to partially fund the move during a meeting on Tuesday, a decision driven by the need to clear space for the expansion of Harry Reid International Airport.
The installation, created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, consists of seven towering stacks of brightly colored boulders, carved from Nevada limestone. Since its unveiling near Jean Dry Lake, approximately 10 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, it has attracted widespread attention, becoming a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
The Need for Relocation
Claire Muñoz, vice president of museum advancement and deputy director for the Nevada Museum of Art, presented the case for relocation at the commissioners' meeting. She explained that the artwork needs to be moved by the end of 2026 to accommodate the airport's expansion. Muñoz emphasized the importance of keeping the installation within Nevada, reflecting Rondinone's wish to explore opportunities to maintain the artwork's presence in the state due to its significant popularity and international acclaim.
“It’s become a visual icon for Nevada,” Muñoz said, highlighting the cultural value of the installation. The exact future location of the artwork within Washoe County remains undecided, but the move will ensure that it continues to be a part of Nevada's artistic landscape.
Financial Support for the Move
The Board of Commissioners approved $500,000 in support of the installation’s relocation, with the funds coming from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This federal funding, designed to aid state and local governments in recovery efforts following the COVID-19 pandemic, will be utilized to cover the costs associated with the "deinstallation, transportation, and installation" of Seven Magic Mountains in its new location, according to Muñoz.
The decision was part of a block vote that passed with a 4 to 1 majority, with Vice Chair Jeanne Herman casting the lone dissenting vote. Commissioner Mike Clark, who supported the arts in general, expressed reservations about the expense, describing it as "a lot of money to spend" on art, though he ultimately voted in favor of the funding.
Preserving Cultural and Economic Impact
The Nevada Museum of Art, which has played a key role in overseeing the project, is committed to preserving the legacy of Seven Magic Mountains. Muñoz stressed that the relocation to Washoe County will not only preserve the cultural significance of the artwork but also bring its economic benefits to the new region. The installation has proven to be a significant draw, contributing to local tourism and providing a unique cultural landmark.
“Today, the Nevada Museum of Art is committed to preserving the legacy of Seven Magic Mountains while bringing its cultural and economic benefits to Washoe County,” Muñoz said.
What’s Next?
While the specific location within Washoe County is still under consideration, the relocation process is expected to be completed before the December 2026 deadline. As plans move forward, the museum and local officials will work together to ensure that Seven Magic Mountains continues to inspire and attract visitors in its new setting, just as it has done in the Las Vegas desert.
For now, the iconic boulders stand tall in their original location, but their future in Washoe County promises to extend their impact, bringing art, culture, and tourism together in a new part of Nevada.
