Nevada Prepares for Earthquake Alert System Following Recent 4.4-Magnitude Quake

Last week, thousands of residents across the Las Vegas Valley were jolted by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake near Indian Springs, underscoring Nevada’s status as the third most seismically active state in the U.S. In response to the ongoing seismic activity, Nevada is set to introduce an emergency alert system that will notify residents of an impending earthquake via their cell phones, potentially giving them crucial seconds to prepare before the shaking begins.

This alert system, already operational in neighboring states like California, Oregon, and Washington, leverages seismic monitors to detect earthquakes and send real-time alerts to residents. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), which manages 300 seismic monitors across Nevada and parts of eastern California, will be integral to the implementation of this system.

“There is no place in Nevada that is safe from feeling earthquakes… the entire state is covered with tectonically active faults,” said Christie Rowe, Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at UNR. The lab’s network of seismic monitors continuously reports ground movements, allowing for real-time data collection and analysis. On average, these monitors record about 15,000 earthquakes per year in Nevada, many of which are too small to be felt but are crucial for understanding seismic activity in the region.

The technology behind the alert system is simple yet effective: after an earthquake occurs, the network detects the event and sends an alert to cell phones before the seismic waves reach the area. "The shaking from the earthquake travels slower than your cell service,” Rowe explained. This can provide a crucial warning, as was the case recently in Southern California, where residents received a 10-second heads-up before the shaking from an earthquake began.

This alert system could have made a life-saving difference in past quakes. For instance, during the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake, a 6.8-magnitude event, a man tragically died in Pahrump while working under a vehicle. A warning could have given him the time to move to safety.

Nevada has experienced even larger quakes in the past, such as the 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Pleasant Valley in 1915. “In Nevada, we have been in this sleepy moment in between big earthquakes… when those earthquakes happen again, it is not a question of if it is a question of when,” Rowe emphasized, highlighting the importance of being prepared for future seismic events, which will impact a larger and more densely populated Nevada.

To fully roll out this alert system in Nevada, federal funding is needed. While seismic monitors are already positioned in key areas around the Las Vegas Valley, including Red Rock Canyon, UNLV, the Desert Research Institute in Boulder City, and Mojave High School in North Las Vegas, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory plans to add more, particularly in high-population areas like Las Vegas and Reno.

Residents who experience an earthquake are encouraged to report it to the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) “Did You Feel It?” site. This data helps create more accurate maps showing which areas are most susceptible to shaking damage, aiding in the development of more effective safety measures.

As Nevada prepares to implement this critical alert system, the state continues to strengthen its readiness for the inevitable earthquakes that lie ahead. The introduction of this system marks a significant step forward in protecting lives and reducing the impact of earthquakes in one of the country’s most seismically active regions.

For those who want to contribute to seismic research and help improve earthquake preparedness, reports can be submitted to the USGS at the following link: Did You Feel It?.

🏈 Dr. Alan Dumond’s NFC Contender and Pretender Analysis

Renowned for his success in football betting competitions, Dr. Alan Dumond breaks down all 16 NFC teams, labeling them as either contenders, who are expected to vie for playoff spots, or pretenders, who are unlikely to be serious threats this season. Here’s his analysis:

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys (20-1):
The Cowboys, coming off a string of 12-win seasons followed by early playoff exits, are under pressure to finally make a deep postseason run. With owner Jerry Jones growing impatient, another disappointing season could result in major changes, including the potential firing of coach Mike McCarthy or trading quarterback Dak Prescott. However, the talent on the roster is undeniable, and Dallas is expected to compete for the NFC East title. Contender.

New York Giants (100-1):
The Giants regressed significantly last season, finishing with a 6-11 record after a promising playoff appearance the previous year. Despite initial optimism under Coach Brian Daboll, quarterback Daniel Jones struggled after signing a four-year extension, contributing to the team’s decline. With low expectations reflected in their 6½ win total, the Giants are unlikely to be a factor this season. Pretender.

Philadelphia Eagles (16-1):
The Eagles started strong last season but faltered down the stretch, losing five of their last six games and suffering a wild-card exit. With new coordinators Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio on board, and quarterback Jalen Hurts looking to build on a career year despite his high interception count, the Eagles are poised to contend for the division title once again. Contender.

Washington Commanders (100-1):
After four seasons of mediocrity under Ron Rivera, the Commanders hit rock bottom with a 4-13 record last season. New coach Dan Quinn faces a massive rebuilding effort, particularly with quarterback Sam Howell, who led the league in interceptions. The addition of rookie Jayden Daniels as the starting quarterback is unlikely to change the team’s fortunes immediately. Pretender.

NFC North

Chicago Bears (30-1):
The Bears are hoping for a fresh start with No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, who has been touted as a generational talent. With a revamped offense featuring receivers D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen, Chicago is expected to be much improved and in the hunt for the NFC North title. Contender.

Detroit Lions (10-1):
Detroit’s steady rise under coach Dan Campbell continued last season, culminating in a 12-5 record and their first NFC North title in 30 years. With a high-powered offense led by quarterback Jared Goff, who was second in the NFL in passing yards last season, the Lions are aiming to build on their success and make a deep playoff run. Super Bowl Contender.

Green Bay Packers (16-1):
The Packers successfully transitioned from the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers era to Jordan Love, who led the team to a playoff spot after a strong finish last season. With Love expected to continue his development, Green Bay remains a strong contender in the NFC North. Contender.

Minnesota Vikings (100-1):
The Vikings struggled last season, finishing 7-10 after a fluky 11-0 record in one-score games the previous year. With rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy sidelined for the season and Sam Darnold taking over, Minnesota’s chances of competing are slim. Pretender.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons (40-1):
Despite some puzzling offseason decisions, including hiring coach Raheem Morris over Bill Belichick and drafting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. after signing Kirk Cousins, the Falcons have enough talent to challenge for the NFC South title. Contender.

Carolina Panthers (300-1):
The Panthers are in disarray after a disastrous 2-15 season and the firing of coach Frank Reich. With quarterback Bryce Young struggling and buyer’s remorse setting in, rookie coach Dave Canales faces an uphill battle in a team filled with dysfunction. Pretender.

New Orleans Saints (100-1):
The Saints showed improvement under coach Dennis Allen, just missing the playoffs last season. Quarterback Derek Carr’s up-and-down first season in New Orleans, along with changes in the coaching staff, could help the team challenge for the division title. Contender.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (80-1):
Despite losing Tom Brady, the Buccaneers rallied to win the NFC South last season with Baker Mayfield at the helm. With key players like Mayfield, Mike Evans, and Lavonte David returning, Tampa Bay is well-positioned to compete for another division title. Contender.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals (100-1):
The Cardinals struggled last season under rookie coach Jonathan Gannon, finishing 4-13. While quarterback Kyler Murray’s return and the arrival of Marvin Harrison Jr. offer some hope, Arizona is unlikely to make a significant leap this year. Pretender.

Los Angeles Rams (30-1):
The Rams have been inconsistent, but with coach Sean McVay, quarterback Matthew Stafford, and a dynamic receiving duo in Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, they have the pieces to contend in a tough NFC West. Contender.

San Francisco 49ers (5-1):
After a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss last season, the 49ers are determined to make another run. With nine Pro Bowlers returning, including Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco is one of the top Super Bowl contenders. Super Bowl Contender.

Seattle Seahawks (60-1):
With Pete Carroll’s departure and rookie coach Mike MacDonald taking over, the Seahawks are in a transitional phase. Quarterback Geno Smith’s regression last year suggests that Seattle is likely to struggle this season. Pretender.

Dr. Alan Dumond's analysis paints a picture of an NFC landscape filled with both promising contenders and teams likely to fall short. As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see which teams live up to expectations and which ones surprise us.

Secret Service Agents Placed on Leave Following Assassination Attempt on Trump

At least five Secret Service agents have been placed on modified duty following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press. This action comes as multiple investigations are underway to understand how a serious breach in security allowed an armed assailant to get close enough to shoot and injure Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Among those placed on modified duty are the special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office and three other agents from that office, which had been responsible for the security planning for the July 13 rally. One of the five agents was part of Trump’s protective detail. These agents are currently on administrative leave, meaning they are barred from participating in investigative or protective duties while the internal review is ongoing.

The law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, indicated that the Secret Service is facing intense scrutiny over what is being described as a significant lapse in one of its core responsibilities: protecting the lives of current and former U.S. presidents.

The incident, which resulted in Trump being struck in the ear by a bullet but avoiding serious injury, also claimed the life of one spectator and left two others injured. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, used an AR-style rifle to fire at Trump from a nearby rooftop—a location that had been flagged as a potential security risk days before the event.

The failure to secure this rooftop has been a focal point of criticism. In the aftermath of the shooting, Kim Cheatle, who was then the Director of the Secret Service, resigned from her position. During a subsequent congressional hearing, Cheatle admitted that the Secret Service had been alerted multiple times to a suspicious individual in the area before the shooting occurred. She also acknowledged that the rooftop from which Crooks fired had been identified as a vulnerability, yet it was not adequately secured.

Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr., who stepped in after Cheatle’s resignation, has publicly expressed his inability to justify the agency’s failure to secure the rooftop. "I cannot defend why that roof was not better secured," Rowe said, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The investigations into this security breach are expected to be thorough, as officials attempt to piece together how such a significant oversight occurred and what measures need to be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The situation has not only shaken confidence in the Secret Service but also highlighted the challenges the agency faces in adapting to evolving threats while maintaining the highest standards of protection for national figures.

As these investigations proceed, the agents on modified duty will remain off the front lines of protective services, awaiting the outcome of the probes that will determine the extent of their accountability and the next steps in this high-profile case.

🎰 Expansion of Gaming Taverns Reflects Growth and Diversification in Clark County

Clark County residents now have more options to play video poker and enjoy a meal as several gaming operators seize opportunities to expand in the tavern and restricted license market. This trend is indicative of the growing demand for such venues in Southern Nevada, driven by the region's population growth and the diversification of the local gaming industry.

Rise in Restricted Gaming Licenses

Southern Nevada has seen a notable increase in restricted gaming licenses, which are limited to businesses that operate no more than 15 gaming machines and must generate revenue from non-gaming operations. Since 2019, Clark County has added 92 new restricted license locations—a 6.5% increase—bringing the total to 1,512, according to state data. This number surpasses the previous peak set in 2007, highlighting the robust growth in the sector.

Experts attribute this growth to the expansion of convenience stores and food and drinking establishments, which increasingly incorporate gaming machines as a supplemental revenue stream. This trend also signals a shift towards a more diversified local gaming industry, with operators exploring new business models and opportunities beyond traditional casino environments.

Tavern Industry Expansion

The surge in restricted licenses is particularly evident in the tavern sector, where several gaming operators are expanding their presence. Taverns, which combine food and beverage services with gaming options, have become a key area of growth for companies like Golden Entertainment and Red Rock Resorts. These establishments offer a more casual gaming experience, appealing to local residents who may prefer a neighborhood setting over a large casino.

Golden Entertainment, for instance, operates the well-known PT’s Taverns chain, which includes multiple brands such as PT’s Pub, PT’s Gold, Sierra Gold, SG Bar, and Sean Patrick’s Pub and Grill. In April, the company acquired two Great American Pub locations for $7.3 million, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. This acquisition aligns with Golden Entertainment’s broader strategy to expand its tavern vertical, with plans to grow from 80 to 100 locations in the coming years.

Red Rock Resorts is also making moves in the tavern market. The company recently announced the launch of a new brand, Seventy Six, with plans to open seven new taverns across Southern Nevada. This expansion represents a strategic shift for Red Rock, which has traditionally focused on neighborhood casinos. Station Casinos President Scott Kreeger emphasized that this move allows the company to reach different customer segments and bring their products closer to where their customers live.

Why Taverns Are Thriving

Several factors contribute to the growing popularity of taverns in Clark County. According to Amanda Belarmino, a professor at UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, taverns are attractive to consumers partly due to their relatively low food and beverage prices—an appealing feature during times of inflation. This affordability, combined with the convenience of local gaming options, makes taverns a popular choice among residents.

Additionally, the consolidation of brands and the entry of new market players have intensified competition, pushing operators to differentiate their offerings. For example, Golden Entertainment’s Chief Operating Officer Blake Sartini II described the company’s aggressive expansion as a “quest” to dominate the local tavern market, with a focus on enhancing the customer experience and maintaining a strong brand presence.

Economic Impact and Challenges

The expansion of taverns and other restricted license locations is contributing to the broader economic landscape of Clark County. While the gaming industry has traditionally been centered around large casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, the growth of smaller, neighborhood-based gaming venues reflects the increasing importance of local markets.

However, the tavern business has faced challenges over the years, including regulatory changes such as those brought about by Nevada’s Clean Indoor Air Act. In 2006, tavern owners had to navigate new restrictions on smoking, which impacted their operations. These challenges have shaped the industry’s evolution, leading to innovations in how taverns operate and serve their customers.

Despite these challenges, the current expansion indicates a thriving sub-industry within the broader gaming sector. Gaming industry analyst Brendan Bussmann, founder of Las Vegas-based B Global, noted that the competitive nature of the market has driven significant changes over the past two decades, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the tavern business.

Looking Ahead

As Clark County continues to grow, the expansion of taverns and other restricted license locations is likely to continue. The region’s gaming operators are poised to capitalize on this growth by offering diverse and appealing gaming experiences that cater to both locals and visitors. With strategic investments and a focus on customer satisfaction, these businesses are well-positioned to thrive in Southern Nevada’s dynamic gaming landscape.
