🏫 Las Vegas Schools Face Heat Challenges: Advocates Push for Urgent Action
Vicki Kreidel, president of the National Education Association of Southern Nevada, knows all too well the impact extreme heat can have on elementary school students. When kids return from recess with flushed faces, refusing to eat lunch, and unable to focus due to the oppressive heat, she fears the problem will only worsen as temperatures continue to rise.
"Any educator can tell you that students are more distracted when they’re uncomfortable," Kreidel said. "Not addressing what’s happening and how it will affect our schools is a recipe for disaster."
As students returned to school this month in Las Vegas, they were met with temperatures still nearing 100 degrees, slightly cooler than the July record high of 120 degrees. This ongoing heat raises concerns about the city's future amid climate change, particularly in the context of education.
Kreidel joined U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., and environmental groups at a recent event in southwest Las Vegas, where they called for both immediate and long-term solutions to the extreme heat affecting students. They stressed the importance of addressing broken air conditioning systems, a widespread issue across the Clark County School District (CCSD).
The issue is not unique to Nevada; a 2020 federal study found that 41 percent of schools nationwide have inadequate cooling systems. Titus criticized the district for not prioritizing heat mitigation, despite receiving $777 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding. She referenced a study showing that a school year just 1 degree hotter can reduce learning by 1 percent.
"If you don’t recognize extreme heat is something that impacts education, then you’re not going to be worried about doing anything about it," Titus said, emphasizing the need for the district to make air conditioning repairs a priority.
The district was unable to specify which schools were without air conditioning but stated its commitment to addressing cooling issues as quickly as possible. The district's 2015 Capital Improvement Program, which allocated $4.1 billion over 10 years, helps fund necessary repairs. However, hotter summers have increased the strain on cooling systems, leading to more frequent issues.
Titus and environmental advocates also highlighted the need for broader, long-term solutions to combat climate change and its effects on Las Vegas' record temperatures. Titus introduced a bill in July that would require the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to create a task force to define extreme heat and enable more disaster assistance for local governments struggling with heat-related challenges.
Local governments have applied for FEMA funds for extreme heat events but have been denied three times in the last decade. Titus emphasized that defining extreme heat is crucial for securing federal assistance.
Environmental groups also advocated for clean energy as a key strategy to mitigate the long-term impacts of climate change. Camalot Todd, communications director for the Nevada Conservation League, pointed to the Biden-Harris administration’s clean energy incentives, such as tax credits for electric vehicles and solar panels, as essential tools for reducing carbon emissions.
Todd, who recounted nearly passing out from heat exhaustion on her first day of school in downtown Las Vegas, stressed the urgency of addressing extreme heat. “Heat isn’t just a number on the dial,” Todd said. “It is a real health concern.”
These initiatives, including programs like Rewiring America’s energy savings calculator for Nevada homeowners and renters, aim to curb the extreme heat caused by climate change and protect future generations from its most severe effects.
🏒 Golden Knights Players Poised for International Competition in 4 Nations Face-Off
NHL players are set to return to best-on-best international competition, and several Vegas Golden Knights are expected to be part of the action. The upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off in February will feature teams from the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden, serving as a precursor to the 2026 Winter Olympics, the first to include NHL players since 2014.
The Golden Knights are already confirmed to have representation at the 4 Nations Face-Off, scheduled for February 12-20 in Boston and Montreal. Center Jack Eichel has been named one of the first six players selected for Team USA, while Knights coach Bruce Cassidy will join Team Canada as an assistant coach under Tampa Bay Lightning’s Jon Cooper.
But Eichel and Cassidy likely won’t be the only Golden Knights involved. Here’s a look at other Knights players who could represent their countries in this high-stakes competition:
Canada
Mark Stone
The Knights’ captain, Mark Stone, is a prime candidate to make Team Canada, provided he stays healthy. Stone’s value as a defensive forward is well-known, having twice been a finalist for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s best defensive forward. However, Stone’s health has been a concern in recent years, with only 136 games played over the past three seasons due to multiple injuries, including two back surgeries and a lacerated spleen.
If Stone is fit, his two-way ability could earn him a spot among Canada’s elite forwards, joining a roster that already includes stars like Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Brad Marchand.
Alex Pietrangelo
Pietrangelo, a 34-year-old defenseman, hopes to add another Olympic gold medal to his resume, having won one with Canada in 2014. Though his production dipped last season to 33 points, his lowest in a full season, Pietrangelo’s experience and ability to handle tough defensive assignments make him a strong contender for the Canadian roster. However, he’ll face stiff competition from a deep pool of Canadian defensemen, including Cale Makar, Evan Bouchard, and Noah Dobson.
Shea Theodore
Theodore, another Knights defenseman, could challenge for a spot on Team Canada as well. Known for his offensive prowess, Theodore scored 42 points last season despite missing 35 games due to a back injury. At 29, he’ll need to prove he can stay healthy and compete with other talented blueliners to secure a spot on the roster.
Adin Hill
The Knights’ No. 1 goaltender, Adin Hill, could also be in the mix for Team Canada. Hill had a strong season, leading the Knights to a Stanley Cup victory, but injury concerns remain after he missed significant time due to lower-body issues. With Logan Thompson traded to Washington, Hill will have a full season to solidify his case for inclusion in Canada’s goaltending trio, competing against names like Jordan Binnington and Stuart Skinner.
United States
Noah Hanifin
Hanifin, a defenseman who joined the Golden Knights from the Calgary Flames, could reunite with Jack Eichel on Team USA. The two Boston natives previously played together for the U.S. at the 2015 World Junior Championships and the 2016 World Championship. Hanifin will need to maintain his strong play from the latter part of last season to earn a spot on a competitive U.S. roster, which already includes top defensemen like Quinn Hughes, Adam Fox, and Charlie McAvoy.
Sweden
William Karlsson
Karlsson is a near-lock for Sweden’s roster, despite not being named among the country’s initial six players. He’s coming off back-to-back 50-point seasons and is recognized as one of the NHL’s top defensive forwards. His versatility and experience make him a valuable asset for Sweden, likely joining a group that includes centers like Elias Pettersson, Elias Lindholm, and Joel Eriksson Ek.
Karlsson expressed disappointment that NHL players weren’t sent to the last two Olympics and is eager for the opportunity to represent Sweden on the Olympic stage in 2026.
“For sure (I’m excited),” Karlsson said. “It’s about time, but they should’ve done it a lot earlier.”
These Golden Knights players will have the chance to showcase their talents on the international stage, representing their countries in what promises to be an exciting prelude to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
❎ Trump and Harris Intensify Campaign Trail: Key Events Planned in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia
Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are intensifying their campaign efforts in key battleground states as the 2024 election season heats up.
Trump is scheduled to visit Michigan and Wisconsin on Thursday, marking a significant push in states crucial to his bid for re-election. Meanwhile, Harris, alongside her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will conduct their first major television interview of the campaign as they travel through southeast Georgia on a bus tour.
Trump's campaign stops in Michigan and Wisconsin are part of a broader strategy to reclaim states he won in 2016 but narrowly lost in 2020. His day begins with a rally in Potterville, Michigan, near Lansing. Trump carried Eaton County, which includes part of Lansing, in both 2016 and 2020, though by a smaller margin the second time. Later, he will head to La Crosse, Wisconsin, for a town hall moderated by former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard. This will be Trump’s first visit to Wisconsin since the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Harris and Walz are set to sit down with CNN’s Dana Bash for their first major interview of the campaign. The interview, airing at 9 p.m. EDT, will provide Harris an opportunity to address criticism that she has avoided uncontrolled media environments. The interview will be taped earlier in the day during their two-day bus tour, which will conclude with an evening rally in Savannah, Georgia. This marks a significant moment for Harris as she seeks to define her campaign and build on the momentum following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race and the recent Democratic National Convention.
Trump's campaign adviser Corey Lewandowski has criticized Harris for allegedly dodging the media, contrasting her approach with Trump’s numerous recent interviews. Lewandowski also suggested that Trump would effectively have to defeat two Democratic nominees following Harris’ "coronation" by the party.
As both candidates ramp up their campaign activities, Democrats have seen a surge in enthusiasm, with a recent Gallup poll showing that about 80% of Democrats are more enthusiastic about voting this November, compared to 55% in March. This increased enthusiasm gives Democrats an edge they didn’t have earlier in the year, as Republicans have seen only a modest increase in their enthusiasm levels.
The campaign trail is becoming increasingly active as Labor Day approaches, signaling the start of the final stretch of the 2024 election. Both Trump and Harris are focusing their efforts on swing states that will be crucial in determining the outcome of the election.
☁ Google Commits $400 Million to Strengthen Cloud and AI Operations in Nevada
Google has announced plans to invest over $400 million in Nevada this year to bolster its cloud and data center infrastructure in the state. This substantial investment is aimed at advancing and meeting the growing demand for Google Cloud services, artificial intelligence innovations, and other digital products like Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Workspace.
The tech giant clarified that this new spending will not be directed towards new construction but rather towards enhancing existing infrastructure. Joe Kava, Google’s vice president of global data centers, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and economic growth in Nevada. He noted that this investment is not only about improving Google’s technical capabilities but also about contributing to the vitality of the state.
Google currently operates a data center in Clark County, situated on 64 acres on Warm Springs Road in Henderson. This $600 million facility, which opened in 2020, was supported by more than $25 million in state tax incentives and was expected to employ at least 50 people, with an average salary of $65,000 per year. In addition, Google completed another $600 million data center in Storey County at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, which became fully operational in early 2021.
Since breaking ground on the Henderson data center in 2019, Google’s total investment in Nevada has exceeded $2.2 billion. Governor Joe Lombardo praised Google’s ongoing commitment, stating that such investments are crucial to establishing Nevada as a leading tech hub in the West.
In conjunction with this investment announcement, Google also revealed a $500,000 contribution to the National Forest Foundation during an event at the University of Nevada, Reno. This donation is aimed at enhancing the resilience of the Truckee River watershed and reducing wildfire risks in the Tahoe National Forest, further demonstrating Google’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community support in Nevada.
