🎬 Nevada’s Film Industry Booms as Major Studios Eye Las Vegas for Future Projects

Nevada is experiencing a surge in film production activity, with increasing interest from filmmakers and production companies even before the anticipated arrival of two major movie studios in the Las Vegas Valley. According to the Nevada Film Office, the state saw 437 productions in the 2024 fiscal year, up from 379 in 2023. This growth spans various types of content, including feature films, commercials, documentaries, and reality TV, marking a notable rise in the state's appeal as a filming destination.

The Nevada Film Office attributes much of the increase in production activity to the state’s competitive landscape, as new markets outside of Hollywood emerge as viable alternatives for filmmakers. "We’re in a golden age of content creation," said Kim Spurgeon, director of the Nevada Film Office. "There’s a lot of people and different production companies making things to be shown on screen, and all of them need the resources."

Post-Pandemic Boom in Production

Nevada’s production revenue has also experienced significant growth, particularly following the pandemic. In 2023, production revenue reached an impressive $90 million, a peak driven by the high demand for content and the state’s efforts to attract filmmakers. Though the industry saw a temporary pause during the writers' strike earlier this year, Nevada has steadily become a hub for filmmakers seeking alternative locations and resources.

The rise in production interest is partially fueled by Nevada’s ability to provide tax incentives for filmmakers. Currently, the state offers $10 million in annual tax credits for productions that meet certain requirements, such as hiring local workers and spending within the state. These incentives have made Nevada a competitive player in the film industry, drawing both in-state and out-of-state productions.

Expanding Competition with Hollywood

Nevada’s appeal as a filming location has been amplified by growing competition with traditional film markets like Los Angeles. As production companies seek cost-effective alternatives to L.A., Nevada has positioned itself as a strong contender. “Other markets are emerging as perhaps competitors with the L.A. market, in terms of where you need to build the stages and build the resources,” Spurgeon explained.

Nevada offers filmmakers not only tax credits but also an array of natural landscapes, unique urban settings, and easy access to logistical resources. The Nevada Film Office regularly assists filmmakers in navigating the bureaucratic process by providing free resources and workshops. One recent event, held at Brew It Coffee in downtown Las Vegas, brought together local filmmakers to learn about how to file applications, secure permits, and take advantage of the state’s resources.

Big Studio Plans in Nevada

Looking ahead, Nevada is set to see an even greater boost in production activity with plans for major studio developments in the Las Vegas Valley. Both Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. are eyeing Nevada as the next home for large-scale production facilities. These studios are pushing for significant tax credit packages to support their plans, which would require changes to state law. Two separate bills are currently being proposed to offer these incentives to Sony and Warner Bros., potentially making Nevada a new powerhouse in the entertainment industry.

The potential for these developments is drawing attention from local and state officials. FOX 5 has reached out to Governor Joe Lombardo for his stance on the proposed tax credits and the long-term benefits these studio projects could bring to Nevada’s economy. If approved, the new studio facilities would further solidify Nevada’s role as a key player in the global film industry.

Supporting Filmmakers, Growing an Industry

The Nevada Film Office’s ongoing efforts to support filmmakers—through tax incentives, resource workshops, and streamlined processes—are helping to foster a growing film community in the state. As productions continue to rise and interest from major studios grows, Nevada is poised to enter a new era of film production, attracting larger projects and creating more opportunities for local talent and businesses.

The future of Nevada’s film industry looks promising, with the state on track to become a premier destination for filmmakers from around the world.

🏈 Raiders’ Season Opener History: A Decade-by-Decade Look at the Highs and Lows

As the Las Vegas Raiders gear up to face the Chargers in their 2024 season opener, it's a good time to reflect on the team’s history of Week 1 performances. Since their inception in 1960, the Raiders have experienced a mix of highs and lows, compiling a 31-33 record in season openers. Here’s a look at how their opening games have played out over the decades:

1960-1969 (6-4)

The Raiders began their franchise with three consecutive losses in season openers, including a rough 55-0 defeat to the Houston Oilers in 1961. Their first victory came in 1963, coinciding with Al Davis’ debut as coach and GM. They finished the decade strong, winning five consecutive Week 1 matchups from 1965 to 1969.

1970-1979 (4-6)

As the Raiders transitioned into the NFL in 1970, they struggled, losing five straight season openers. A dramatic loss to the Bills in 1974 featured a fumble return touchdown that was quickly negated by an Ahmad Rashad score. The Raiders rebounded in the late 1970s, with Hall of Fame quarterback Ken Stabler leading the way to four wins in five openers. In 1979, Tom Flores earned his first win as the Raiders’ head coach with a 24-17 victory over the Rams.

1980-1989 (8-2)

The 1980s were the Raiders’ most successful decade for season openers, losing only two in that span. A memorable moment came in 1982 when the Raiders, now in Los Angeles, defeated the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers. Their losses in this decade came against John Elway and the Broncos, including a thrilling 38-36 defeat in 1986.

1990-1999 (3-7)

The Raiders' success waned in the 1990s, managing only three Week 1 wins. The team did secure a 14-9 victory over the Broncos in 1990, marking the franchise’s 150th home win. The Raiders moved back to Oakland in 1995 and began with a 17-7 win over the Chargers. However, they then lost four straight openers, including a 1996 game against Baltimore that was the Ravens’ first in franchise history.

2000-2009 (3-7)

The Raiders opened the 2000s with three straight Week 1 victories but then suffered seven consecutive losses. Despite the losing streak, there were memorable moments, including a last-second win over the Chiefs in 2001. The team also made its debut in the NFL Kickoff Game in 2005, losing to the Patriots, and appeared in “Monday Night Football” season openers in 2006, 2008, and 2009, all losses.

2010-2019 (4-6)

The Raiders' losing streak in season openers extended to eight games with a 2010 loss to the Titans. They broke the streak with a 23-20 win over the Broncos in 2011. Derek Carr made history in 2014 as the first rookie quarterback to start a Raiders season opener. He notched his first Week 1 win in 2016 with a thrilling comeback victory against the Saints, sealing the game with a two-point conversion.

2020-2023 (3-1)

The Raiders’ first game as the Las Vegas Raiders came in 2020, when they defeated the Panthers 34-30. In 2021, they opened Allegiant Stadium with a dramatic overtime victory against the Ravens, highlighted by a walkoff touchdown from Derek Carr to Zay Jones. In 2022, they suffered a close loss to the Chargers but bounced back in 2023 with a 17-16 win over the Broncos, with Jakobi Meyers catching the game-winning touchdown from Jimmy Garoppolo.

VREMS: Nevada’s Modern Voter Registration System to Streamline 2024 General Election

Nevada voters heading to the polls for the 2024 General Election will notice a new feature in place: updated keypads for in-person voting. This enhancement is part of a broader effort to streamline voter registration and ballot management across the state, known as the Voter Registration and Election Management Solution (VREMS). This system is designed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the voting process and is already operational in Clark County.

What is VREMS?

VREMS is a statewide voter registration database that modernizes the way elections are managed in Nevada. Developed by the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office, this system centralizes voter information, allowing real-time access to crucial data. When a voter arrives at a polling station, the system quickly locates their name, verifies their information, and takes their signature to confirm their identity. The new keypads will facilitate this process, allowing voters to affirm their identity before casting their ballot.

Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar emphasized that VREMS makes the voter experience more seamless and secure. “The process makes the voter’s experience better,” Aguilar said, underscoring how the system enhances efficiency and reduces the likelihood of errors or delays at polling places.

A Statewide Solution for Better Election Management

Before the implementation of VREMS, each of Nevada’s 17 counties operated its own election management systems, which varied significantly in their technology and functionality. Some counties were using outdated and unsupported legacy systems, making it difficult to ensure uniformity and responsiveness across the state. VREMS replaces these disparate systems with one centralized database, allowing the Secretary of State’s Office to oversee elections more efficiently and address issues quickly, regardless of location.

Preventing Voting Irregularities

One of VREMS’ key benefits is its ability to prevent fraudulent voting attempts. The system can quickly identify if someone has already voted, even if they attempt to cast a ballot in different counties or under a similar name, such as a parent or relative. This immediate detection helps prevent duplicate voting and enhances the overall security of the election process.

Real-Time Data and Voter Flexibility

The real-time capabilities of VREMS mean that voters who wish to update their information, change party affiliations, or register on Election Day (November 5) can do so with ease. This flexibility ensures that voters have every opportunity to participate in the election, even if they need to make changes at the last minute.

Positive Early Feedback

Clark County voters who used VREMS during the presidential preference primary and Nevada Primary elections reported a smoother, more efficient experience. Election workers also noted that the system was easy to use, which is crucial in high-stakes elections where accuracy and speed are paramount.

Secretary Aguilar acknowledged the challenge of implementing such a system statewide during what could be a record voter turnout but expressed confidence that the streamlined process would pay off. He noted that while the 2024 General Election could see high voter participation, the fact that there are fewer races on the ballot may contribute to a smoother rollout.

VREMS and Vote Tabulation

While VREMS handles voter registration and sign-in, it does not alter the vote-counting process. Tabulation will still be managed by each county individually, ensuring that the local control of vote counts remains intact. However, the uniform registration system allows for better coordination and problem-solving at the state level.

Investment in Modernization

VREMS is the product of a legislative initiative approved in 2021, with funding secured in 2023 for approximately $30 million. Aguilar highlighted that the system is being implemented on time and under budget, a significant achievement given the scope of the project.

Looking Forward

With VREMS in place, Nevada is set to modernize its election process, making it more secure, efficient, and responsive to voter needs. The system’s rollout comes at a crucial time, as the state prepares for a highly anticipated election year. With the combination of advanced technology, real-time data, and statewide coordination, VREMS promises to be a critical tool in ensuring the integrity and accessibility of Nevada’s elections.

🏒 Vegas Golden Knights Open Vegas Born Bar & Grill at Harry Reid International Airport

The Vegas Golden Knights are expanding their brand visibility with the opening of the Vegas Born Bar & Grill, a new restaurant located inside Harry Reid International Airport. The themed restaurant, located in the D Gates, offers a hockey-centric atmosphere complete with black and gold accents, Knights memorabilia, and a design that reflects the team’s desert hockey identity.

With over 57 million travelers passing through the airport annually, the decision to showcase the Knights’ branding in such a high-traffic location was a strategic move. Eric Tosi, vice president of marketing for the Golden Knights, noted that the airport provides an ideal venue for growing the team's global presence.

Immersive Hockey Experience

The Vegas Born Bar & Grill features a menu filled with items inspired by the team and the city. Guests can order dishes such as The Wingers—jumbo chicken wings named after the hockey player position—or the Misfits’ Swiss Burger, referencing the original “misfits” squad that made up the first Knights team. The restaurant is designed to be an immersive experience for fans and travelers alike, with even the to-go section creatively named Breakaway.

“We wanted guests to feel what it means to be a Golden Knights fan,” Tosi said, emphasizing the team's focus on creating a unique dining experience.

Two Years in the Making

The concept for the restaurant has been in development for over two years. According to Clark County director of aviation Rosemary Vassiliadis, professional sports have been a major draw for travelers passing through Las Vegas, making the addition of the Knights’ restaurant a natural fit. The restaurant adds to the existing presence of the Raiders, who have retail spaces at the airport.

Tosi also noted that construction delays due to major events like Formula One and the upcoming Super Bowl had impacted the project’s timeline, but the opening was intentionally timed to coincide with the start of the new hockey season.

Future Plans

While the Knights have big ambitions for expanding their brand, there are currently no plans to open additional restaurants under the Vegas Born banner. However, the team will continue exploring new avenues to promote its brand both locally and globally.
