🏕 Lake Mead Closes Popular Camping Site Due to Illegal Roads, Environmental Damage
After a surge in illegal roads created by visitors at the Government Wash camping site in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the National Park Service closed the popular location in July. According to Assistant Chief Ranger Mike Garel, the closure was necessary after the unauthorized roads, or "spiderweb" of paths, began eroding the landscape, damaging vegetation, and disrupting local ecosystems.
The illegal roads—over 100 miles of them—formed as visitors repeatedly drove on desert terrain, compacting the soil and creating the appearance of established routes. These paths not only destroyed natural habitats but also spread waste, litter, and crime into previously untouched areas of the park.
Increased Crime and Damage to the Environment
The closure followed an influx of “residential-type visitors” who caused environmental degradation and led to high crime rates. During peak periods, Government Wash saw up to 500 visitors at a time, resulting in more than 500 law enforcement incidents between January 2022 and February 2023, including an attempted murder. Rangers struggled to keep up with the crime in the vast 1.5 million-acre park, requiring aerial support to locate emergency calls in remote areas accessible only by illegal roads.
The environmental impact of these roads has been significant. Vehicles driving off authorized paths have disrupted the delicate desert ecosystem, damaging vegetation and harming wildlife. Jeff Ruch, director of the Pacific Regional Office of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, called illegal off-road driving one of the biggest threats to public lands in the West. In desert environments, off-road vehicles can destroy vegetation and wildlife habitats, creating barren landscapes that are difficult to restore.
Among the species at risk is the desert tortoise, which burrows underground. Vehicles driving over these habitats can crush the burrows, potentially harming or killing the tortoises. Additionally, the Las Vegas Bearpoppy, a rare yellow flower that thrives in the gypsum-rich soil of the Mojave Desert, has also been affected by vehicles tearing through its habitat.
Ruch also noted that illegal roads can pollute local waterways, spreading gasoline and other pollutants that harm the environment and make survival harder for wildlife.
Law Enforcement Challenges and Future Plans
Managing the illegal roads and crime in the area has stretched park resources thin. Garel noted that with just one plane and around 26 rangers patrolling 1.5 million acres, responding to emergencies along the illegal roads proved challenging. Visitors using these roads often felt removed from law enforcement and ignored park rules, leading to persistent law enforcement issues.
The National Park Service plans to reopen Government Wash in 2025, though how the site will be managed remains under discussion. Garel mentioned that restrictions, such as limiting camping areas or heavily enforcing road rules, may be necessary to prevent a repeat of the current situation. Rangers, biologists, and volunteers are currently assessing the environmental damage.
Ruch emphasized the need for strict enforcement to prevent further degradation, suggesting that ticketing and policing illegal roads is essential. However, he pointed out that in many cases, the illegal off-roaders are aware they’re breaking the rules but don’t care, indicating that education efforts alone may not be effective.
The closure of Government Wash will be discussed further at a Lake Mead quarterly community meeting on September 19. So far, feedback from local communities and tribes has been largely supportive of the park's decision. Garel expressed optimism that the area can be restored and reopened in a way that ensures it remains a safe, family-friendly environment.
🏈 Raiders' Gardner Minshew: A Story of Perseverance, Resilience, and Second Chances
Gardner Minshew, now the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, has had a career defined by persistence, overcoming countless rejections on his way to the NFL. Long before his iconic mustache and daring style of play caught the attention of football fans, Minshew had to fight for every opportunity, enduring numerous setbacks as college coaches repeatedly dismissed him as not athletic enough or lacking the arm strength to succeed at a higher level.
Minshew’s journey from high school standout to NFL starting quarterback is a testament to his resilience. Despite leading Brandon High School in Mississippi to success, he failed to attract significant interest from college recruiters. At a local football camp hosted by Southern Mississippi, even after dominating the competition, Minshew was left without a scholarship offer, with the coach bluntly telling him they were no longer interested. “I just remember breaking down,” Minshew recalled. But despite the disappointment, he refused to give up.
Determined to prove himself, Minshew enrolled at Northwest Mississippi Community College in 2015, where he led the team to a conference title, drawing some attention from colleges. However, the offers Minshew had hoped for never came, and even Southern Mississippi didn’t inquire about him after his success at Northwest. His coach, Jack Wright, recalls how Minshew tried to hide his disappointment, though it was clear the lack of recognition stung.
Through it all, Minshew remained steadfast in his belief in himself. Wyatt Rogers, his high school offensive coordinator, praised Minshew’s quiet confidence, saying, “He has a great belief in himself and his skill set. It’s probably the most uncommon characteristic he has.” That belief helped Minshew keep pushing forward, waiting for the right break.
A Turning Point: Washington State and Mike Leach
Minshew’s big break came in an unexpected way. After playing two seasons at East Carolina University from 2016-2017, Minshew planned to join the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2018 as an emergency backup quarterback under Nick Saban. He was set to mentor young quarterbacks Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, and Mac Jones, with an eye on becoming a graduate assistant the following year. But when Alabama’s business school delayed his enrollment, fate intervened.
While waiting to join Alabama, Minshew received a life-changing phone call from legendary coach Mike Leach, who invited him to play at Washington State and lead their Air Raid offense. For Minshew, a longtime admirer of Leach’s offensive system, it was a dream come true. The decision to head to Washington State proved to be the turning point in his career. Minshew thrived in Leach’s system, leading the nation in completions (468) and ranking second in passing yards (4,779) in 2018. He also tied the school’s record for passing touchdowns in a season (38), catapulting himself into the national spotlight and catching the attention of NFL scouts.
From "Minshew Mania" to NFL Challenges
Minshew’s success at Washington State led to his selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite being a late-round pick, he quickly made his mark. As a rookie, Minshew was thrust into the starting role after an injury to Nick Foles, leading the Jaguars to a surprising 6-6 record in games he started. His 3,271 passing yards and 21 touchdowns that season sparked "Minshew Mania," as his charismatic personality and underdog story captivated fans.
However, Minshew’s career in Jacksonville was short-lived. After a tough second season in which the Jaguars went 1-7 in games he started, he was benched and eventually traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he served as a backup for two years. Despite his demotion, Minshew never wavered in his belief that he could still make an impact as a starting quarterback.
A New Opportunity with the Raiders
In 2023, Minshew joined the Indianapolis Colts as a veteran mentor to rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. He wasn’t expected to play much, but injuries to Richardson thrust Minshew into the starting role for most of the season. The Colts went 7-6 in games he started, and Minshew’s steady performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. Although the team fell just short of the playoffs, Minshew’s resilience and leadership stood out.
That leadership and experience caught the attention of the Las Vegas Raiders, who were looking for a veteran quarterback to compete with younger talent like Aidan O’Connell. The Raiders signed Minshew to a two-year, $25 million contract in March 2024, and during training camp, Minshew’s performance and leadership helped him win the starting job.
Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy praised Minshew’s impact on the team, saying, “(Minshew) really stepped up when we came to camp. The leadership part of it stood out right away for the guys. And I think if you ask the rest of the guys on this football team, they’re ready to follow him.”
Resilience as a Mantra
Minshew’s journey from overlooked high school recruit to NFL starting quarterback is a powerful story of perseverance. His mantra throughout his career has been, “Just keep giving yourself a chance. It’s all gonna work out.” That mindset has helped him rise above the doubt and rejection he faced at every level of his career.
“Even when there wasn’t really a realistic chance, I always felt like there was a way,” Minshew said. “Like I could find a way.”
Now, as the starting quarterback for the Raiders, Minshew is determined to seize the opportunity that so many teams passed on. His friends and former coaches in Mississippi believe he’s more than ready for the challenge. “Knowing where he’s come from and the work he’s put in... I couldn’t be prouder,” said Wyatt Rogers. “All Gardner Minshew needs is a crack in the door, and he’ll get his ass in there.”
Minshew hopes to bring that same resilience and determination to the Raiders, inspiring his teammates to believe that, no matter the odds, they can find a way to win. With Minshew leading the huddle, the Raiders are ready to see just how far this underdog can take them. Jakobi Meyers catching the game-winning touchdown from Jimmy Garoppolo.
❎ Trump Highlights Pro-Israel Policies at Republican Jewish Summit
At the Republican Jewish Coalition's annual leadership summit, held just weeks before the one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel, members of the Jewish community voiced their demands for the immediate release of the remaining hostages. These calls come nearly a year after Hamas militants launched a deadly attack, killing 1,200 Israelis and taking 240 hostages. Despite efforts to broker deals for their release, a significant number of hostages remain in captivity, exacerbating tensions and grief in the Jewish community.
Calls for Hostage Release and Criticism of U.S. Efforts
Ken Abramowitz, a resident of Lake Worth, Florida, expressed frustration over the ongoing situation. He stated that the hostages should have been released within days of the attacks, which not only took hundreds captive but also sparked a conflict that has led to the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Abramowitz likened the attack to major historical tragedies, saying, “It reminded me of 9/11, and although I wasn’t around at the time, it reminded me of Pearl Harbor.”
Throughout the summit, several speakers criticized the Biden-Harris administration for what they perceived as a lack of urgency in securing the hostages' release. While a deal in November 2023 led to the release of 110 women and children, many speakers felt that not enough had been done to bring the remaining hostages home. They argued that the administration failed to prioritize the issue and that stronger action should have been taken earlier.
Parents of hostages also spoke at the summit, sharing their personal anguish. Orna and Ronen Neutra, whose son Omer was taken hostage 335 days ago, addressed the crowd, detailing the agony of not knowing their son’s condition. “There is specific physical pain and fear when a person you love is suffering, and you have no access to them,” Orna said. “Omer is alive, but he is in great danger. Since October 7th, there is not a moment that passes when we are not thinking about his safety.”
This outpouring of frustration was compounded by the recent deaths of six hostages, including 23-year-old Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Goldberg-Polin’s parents had been advocating for his release at various political conventions before receiving the devastating news. These personal stories underscored the broader political debate surrounding the U.S. administration's response to the crisis.
Trump’s Strong Stance on Israel
The summit, a major event for Republican Jewish voters, also became a platform for discussing the U.S. response to Israel’s security and broader Middle East policy. Former President Donald Trump appeared via satellite, delivering a speech that focused on his track record of supporting Israel. Trump outlined his achievements, including relocating the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, brokering the Abraham Accords, defeating ISIS, and withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Deal.
Trump also contrasted his policies with those of the Biden-Harris administration, which he criticized for withholding weapons from Israel and for issuing a $10 billion sanctions waiver to Iran. He accused Vice President Kamala Harris of neglecting Israel, particularly pointing to her absence at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech in Washington, D.C., earlier in the year. Trump claimed that the Hamas attack on Israel would not have happened under his presidency, and warned that a Harris presidency would empower terrorists to threaten Israel’s existence.
“I am the candidate of those who want to defend Western civilization, defend Israel,” Trump declared. “I will support Israel’s right to win. It’s war or terror, and we will win fast. We have to win.”
Trump also expressed his devastation over the recent deaths of hostages and vowed that those responsible for the murders would face justice. “As for the evil savages responsible for these murders, may they never know peace or comfort ever again,” he said.
Debate Between Trump and Harris on Israel Policy
The contrast between Trump’s and Harris’ positions on Israel was a focal point at the summit. Harris, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention a few weeks earlier, had reaffirmed her commitment to Israel’s security but framed it within a broader context of ending the ongoing war and addressing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. She emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself while also acknowledging the civilian casualties in Gaza and stressing the need for a peaceful resolution that respects Palestinian self-determination.
“Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination,” Harris said at the convention.
This more nuanced approach was sharply criticized by speakers at the Republican summit, who argued that Harris’ administration had failed to fully back Israel in its war against Hamas. GOP leaders accused Harris and Biden of showing weakness by negotiating with Iran and withholding critical military support for Israel.
Morgan Finkelstein, a spokesperson for the Harris-Walz campaign, defended the Vice President’s record, stating that Harris has been a lifelong supporter of Israel and remains committed to its security as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people. She also emphasized Harris’ steadfast opposition to antisemitism both in the U.S. and abroad.
Trump’s Criticism of Jewish Democratic Support
In his speech, Trump did not shy away from criticizing Jewish voters who support the Democratic Party. Citing a Pew Research Center survey showing that 69 percent of Jewish voters align with Democrats, Trump questioned how any Jewish person could vote for a party he claims “hates Israel and doesn’t like Jewish people.”
“Who are the 50 percent of Jewish people that are voting for these people that hate Israel and don’t like Jewish people?” Trump asked rhetorically, drawing applause from the crowd. He promised that if re-elected, he would deport “foreign Jihad sympathizers” and suggested cutting off government funding to universities that allow pro-Palestinian protests, which he described as “anti-Israel.”
Throughout the two-day event, other prominent Republican figures echoed Trump’s sentiments. Speakers like Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines emphasized the need for a stronger stance in support of Israel. They urged for the complete destruction of Hamas and called for sanctions against institutions that support anti-Israel sentiments.
Conclusion
The Republican Jewish Coalition’s summit served not only as a rallying point for calls to free the remaining hostages but also as a platform to discuss the future of U.S.-Israel relations. The summit’s speakers, including Trump and other prominent GOP figures, laid out their visions for a stronger alliance with Israel and criticized the current administration for its handling of the Middle East conflict. With the 2024 election approaching, the contrasting views on Israel policy will likely remain a central issue in the political landscape, particularly for Jewish voters deciding between the Republican and Democratic candidates.
