👩‍⚕️ Las Vegas Seeks State Aid to Expand Homeless Shelter and Health Services

The City of Las Vegas is preparing to request state lawmakers’ assistance in addressing the medical and mental health needs of the city’s growing homeless population. During the 2025 Nevada Legislative session, the city plans to sponsor a Bill Draft Request to secure Medicaid funding for expanded services at its homeless shelters.

At the heart of the proposal is The Courtyard, the region’s largest homeless shelter, which accommodates hundreds of people each night. Those requiring medical or mental health care are taken to the adjacent Recuperative Care Center (RCC), which currently has 38 beds that are always full. To meet rising demand, the city plans to double the number of beds and add a crisis stabilization unit, contingent on securing Medicaid funding approval.

“We need to double the capacity,” said Councilman Cedric Crear. “The goal is to get you healthy and then into some type of transition housing, not put you back out on the street.”

The legislation would introduce a new Medicaid code to fully fund these expanded services. Currently, the city covers the entire $5.3 million annual cost to operate the RCC. The expansion would raise the cost to $7.5 million, making Medicaid funding crucial.

Crear emphasized that the city bears the heavy financial burden of maintaining the only low-barrier shelter in the region, meaning people from across the area seek help at The Courtyard. Mayor Carolyn Goodman has urged other jurisdictions to establish their own homeless shelters, while the city continues to shoulder the responsibility.

Governor Joe Lombardo’s office released a statement reaffirming the governor's commitment to homelessness prevention. Lombardo has invested over $100 million in the state’s homelessness prevention fund, expanded behavioral health centers, and increased access to mental health services. He looks forward to further policy discussions in the next legislative session.

🏀 Aces Rally to Beat Sun 72-67, Extend Winning Streak to Four Games

The Las Vegas Aces claimed a dramatic 72-67 win over the Connecticut Sun on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, marking their fourth consecutive victory. Despite a sluggish first half where they only scored 26 points, their lowest in a half since July 2017, the Aces rallied in the second half to pull off the comeback.

Kelsey Plum led the charge for the Aces (22-12), scoring 27 points. Chelsea Gray sealed the game with a clutch 3-pointer, giving the Aces a four-point lead with just 17.8 seconds left, capping a comeback from a 15-point first-half deficit.

“It didn’t start great at all,” Plum said after the game. “But this year, we haven’t had a ton of things go our way, so it’s cool to see it fall the way it did, especially late in the game. It’s really hard. People don’t really understand how hard it is. So I’m just proud we kept battling.”

The Sun (24-10), who have now dropped two straight games, were led by Brionna Jones with 17 points. The Aces’ win marks their first four-game winning streak since July 2024. The Aces now prepare for a showdown against the league-leading New York Liberty (28-6) on Sunday.

Three Key Takeaways from the Aces' Victory

1. Historic Moments in the Arena

The game featured some historic milestones for the Aces. A'ja Wilson, who finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, is now just 11 points away from breaking the single-season scoring record of 939 points, set by Jewell Loyd last season. Wilson also delivered a crucial step-back jumper before Gray’s game-sealing 3-pointer.

The game was a rematch of the 2022 WNBA Finals, where the Aces defeated the Sun, and Gray earned Finals MVP honors. It also pitted two recent Coach of the Year winners against each other: Stephanie White of the Sun, who won in 2023, and Becky Hammon of the Aces, the 2022 recipient.

2. Kelsey Plum’s Stellar Performance

Kelsey Plum was the standout player for the Aces, especially in the first half when she was the only player to score in double figures. Plum carried the team in the second quarter, scoring seven of the Aces’ nine points as they struggled offensively, shooting just 26.5 percent from the floor.

However, the Aces turned things around in the third quarter, outscoring the Sun 23-14 to mount their comeback. Plum’s performance was key to the victory, and after the game, she credited a recent rest day for helping her recharge. “The Olympics took a toll on me,” Plum said, adding that the recovery time was much needed.

3. Jackie Young’s Limited Role and Hammon’s Praise for Colson

Guard Jackie Young, who had been rested in a previous game against the Atlanta Dream, only played two minutes in the fourth quarter. Instead, coach Becky Hammon relied on reserves Tiffany Hayes, Alysha Clark, and Sydney Colson, who made key contributions. Colson was the only reserve player to score in the final period, adding two points and a critical defensive rebound in nearly seven minutes.

Hammon praised Colson’s impact, particularly her defensive presence, but noted that Young "just didn’t have it" on Friday. Despite this, Hammon expressed confidence in Young’s ability to bounce back, predicting a strong performance against the Liberty on Sunday. “Jackie’s probably going to score 35 the next game. But make no bones about it, we’re not going anywhere without Jackie Young’s production on most nights,” Hammon said.

👫 New Las Vegas Dating App Aims to Get Users Off Screens and Into Real-Life Dates

First Round's On Me, a Los Angeles-based dating app, has expanded nationwide, including its launch in Las Vegas last week. Unlike many dating apps that rely on endless swiping and messaging, this app focuses on getting users off their phones and into real-life dates with just the click of a button.

Founded by Joe Feminella, the app encourages users to immediately schedule a date once they “heart” someone. Instead of swiping, users choose a time for drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) based on availability provided in the app. Once the date is accepted, a chat feature opens up, but no earlier than 24 hours before the planned meeting, ensuring more in-person interaction and less small talk.

Feminella, inspired by his own experiences with online dating in New York, developed the app to counter the "pen pal" effect common on other platforms, where conversations often fizzle without real-life interaction. “We were like: ‘Why don’t we give people 24 hours to chat before the date,’” Feminella explained, aiming to keep first dates as organic as possible.

Launched originally in May 2020, the app has gained significant traction, with over 160,000 users, 8,500 completed dates, and a few marriages in its 12 test markets. Feminella believes the app will resonate with locals who want meaningful connections rather than the fast-paced environment that Las Vegas is often associated with.

“We actually want [people] to sit down and have a drink with somebody as opposed to just getting crazy at the MGM,” said Feminella.

First Round's On Me encourages users to choose curated date spots through the app or search for their favorite venues directly within the platform. The app limits users to one date per day, promoting quality over quantity in fostering genuine connections.

😋 SoulBelly BBQ in Las Vegas Named One of Best Texas-Style Barbecue Joints in U.S.

SoulBelly BBQ in downtown Las Vegas has gained national recognition for its authentic Texas-style barbecue, being named one of the best places in the U.S. to enjoy Texas barbecue outside of Texas by Texas Monthly. The magazine, a leading authority on all things barbecue, highlighted SoulBelly in an article by Daniel Vaughn, its barbecue editor and author of The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue.

Vaughn spent 16 months traveling across 37 states, sampling 149 different barbecue joints, to curate his list of the 53 best Texas-style barbecue spots outside Texas. His findings revealed that Texas-style barbecue, characterized by smoked beef brisket and other meats cooked over hardwoods, has become the definitive barbecue style in the U.S.

Bruce Kalman, a James Beard Award nominee and winner of Chopped, opened SoulBelly in 2021. Vaughn praised SoulBelly for its impressive brisket, pork ribs, and housemade green chile and cheese sausages, all cooked in Mill Scale offset smokers, which sit prominently in front of the restaurant. The smoked burger on a house bun, along with deep-fried mac and cheese balls made from housemade pasta, also earned rave reviews.

SoulBelly’s offerings include a variety of standout dishes, from Texas-style brisket chile con carne served on corn tortillas to the popular Belly of Soul Sandwich, which is piled high with sliced brisket, a fried egg, pickled onions, crisp onions, cheese sauce, and spicy barbecue sauce.

In addition to its Texas Monthly recognition, SoulBelly was named one of the Review-Journal’s Top 100 Restaurants in June 2024. Located at 1327 S. Main St., SoulBelly continues to attract locals and visitors alike with its dedication to wood-smoked meats and inventive takes on classic barbecue fare.
