🛣 NDOT Announces I-15 Ramp Closures for Tropicana Avenue Interchange Work
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced a series of overnight ramp closures on I-15 as part of its ongoing Tropicana Avenue Interchange project. The closures, scheduled between Sunday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 10, will affect both northbound and southbound traffic as crews work to advance construction on one of Las Vegas’ most significant infrastructure improvements.
Closure Schedule:
Sunday, Sept. 8: Northbound I-15 will be fully closed between Russell Road and Tropicana Avenue starting at 9 p.m. The closure will last overnight and is expected to be lifted by Monday morning.
Monday, Sept. 9: Southbound I-15 will be closed from Flamingo Road to Russell Road starting at 9 p.m. The closure will remain in place until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
These closures are essential to facilitate critical construction work on the Tropicana Avenue Interchange, a project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in one of the busiest corridors in Southern Nevada.
Tropicana Avenue Interchange Project:
The Tropicana Avenue Interchange project is a major infrastructure effort aimed at modernizing the interchange, which sees heavy traffic daily from commuters, tourists, and commercial vehicles. The $305 million project, partially funded by the federal government, is designed to reduce congestion, improve safety, and accommodate future growth in the region.
The project includes the complete reconstruction of the I-15 overpass at Tropicana Avenue, widening lanes, upgrading on- and off-ramps, and improving pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Once completed, the interchange is expected to significantly ease traffic for those traveling along the I-15 corridor, especially in the area surrounding the Las Vegas Strip.
Traffic Management and Navigation:
NDOT advises drivers to plan ahead and use alternate routes during the closures. Motorists can use Flamingo Road, Russell Road, and other local streets to navigate around the closed sections of I-15. Additionally, NDOT recommends that drivers download and use the I-15 Trop app, a navigation tool specifically designed to provide real-time traffic updates, detours, and closure information related to the project.
The app helps users track construction progress, avoid delays, and plan their routes more efficiently during the I-15 Tropicana Avenue Interchange improvements.
Impact on Commuters and Safety Tips:
Commuters who regularly travel through this area should expect some delays during the overnight closures, and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider using alternative routes. NDOT also reminds drivers to exercise caution in construction zones, obey speed limits, and be mindful of workers in the area.
The I-15 corridor is one of the busiest stretches of freeway in Las Vegas, and with the added challenge of construction, drivers should stay alert to changing traffic patterns and road signs.
Project Timeline and Future Closures:
The Tropicana Avenue Interchange project is scheduled for completion by 2025. During the course of construction, NDOT will continue to announce periodic closures and lane shifts to accommodate ongoing work. While this project will take several years to complete, the anticipated benefits include improved traffic flow, reduced travel times, and enhanced safety for all road users.
As NDOT progresses with construction, they will notify the public of any additional closures or traffic changes to minimize disruptions and ensure that drivers can make necessary adjustments.
Conclusion:
The upcoming I-15 ramp closures are a key part of the Tropicana Avenue Interchange project, which is vital for improving infrastructure in Las Vegas. By planning ahead and staying informed through tools like the I-15 Trop app, drivers can navigate the closures with minimal disruption. The short-term inconveniences of the closures will ultimately lead to long-term improvements that benefit commuters, tourists, and local businesses alike.
Key Points:
Northbound I-15 closed from Russell Road to Tropicana Avenue on Sunday night.
Southbound I-15 closed from Flamingo Road to Russell Road on Monday night.
NDOT advises drivers to use the I-15 Trop app and alternate routes to avoid delays.
The Tropicana Avenue Interchange project is a major improvement expected to be completed by 2025.
🏈 Pierce Disappointed with Raiders’ Performance, Eyes Improvement Ahead of Ravens Matchup
It was a tough start to the season for Raiders coach Antonio Pierce, whose team fell 22-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers in Sunday’s opener. Making matters worse, Pierce watched the Detroit Lions dominate the Los Angeles Rams with a physical running game later that night, something he had hoped would define his Raiders this season.
“Detroit’s physicality and passion were everything we wanted to be about this year,” Pierce said. “And it was nowhere to be seen at SoFi Stadium.”
The Raiders struggled offensively, managing just 71 rushing yards on 22 carries, and Pierce admitted his team failed to set the tone in the trenches. "A big part of our game is our identity and being physical at the line of scrimmage," Pierce added. "And that didn’t happen yesterday.”
Offensive Woes
The Raiders’ inability to establish the run game made the offense one-dimensional, hurting their chances on key downs. “We’ve got to run with better pad level with our backs,” Pierce said. “Some of these tackles, we gotta break through arm tackles.” The offensive line also failed to "finish" blocks, according to Pierce, which left running backs missing opportunities for extra yards.
These offensive struggles had a ripple effect on the defense, which found itself repeatedly back on the field after quick drives. As a result, the defense was gassed by the fourth quarter, leading to a 61-yard run by Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins, which sealed the game with under five minutes remaining.
For Pierce, the inability to control the line of scrimmage was particularly painful. His vision for the team includes wearing down opponents with a strong running game, creating explosive opportunities through play-action passes—something the Raiders failed to execute in their first outing.
Injuries and Personnel Challenges
Compounding the Raiders’ issues were injuries on the defensive side. Defensive end Malcolm Koonce missed the game due to a knee injury, and his backup, rookie Tyree Wilson, also went down with a knee injury during the game. Pierce did not have an update on Wilson’s status on Monday but confirmed that general manager Tom Telesco is exploring options to strengthen the defensive line. Former Raiders edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue, a free agent, is one possibility being considered for bolstering the pass rush.
Conservative Play from Minshew
Quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 25 of 33 passes but rarely attacked downfield. His lone touchdown came on a short, behind-the-line throw to running back Alexander Mattison that turned into a 31-yard score. Pierce emphasized the need for Minshew to be more aggressive in getting the ball to the team’s playmakers.
“There were a lot of plays called in the passing game that (were) to be aggressively thrown down the field,” Pierce said. “Protection, guys open, the quarterback — all of those things play into it.”
Pierce acknowledged the coaching staff designed plays meant to challenge the Chargers’ defense but noted that poor protection and decision-making prevented them from fully executing their game plan.
Late-Game Skirmish Avoids NFL Fallout
Despite frustrations on both sides, the NFL chose not to issue any penalties following a late-game scuffle that resulted in the ejections of Raiders cornerback Jack Jones and Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer. The incident occurred after a failed Chargers two-point conversion attempt with 3:40 remaining. Pierce expressed displeasure with the altercation but made it clear that discipline and composure are essential moving forward.
“We don’t want to put ourselves in a position where it’s possibly ejection, fines, or suspensions down the road,” Pierce said. “We’ve got to be careful.”
Looking Ahead to Baltimore
The Raiders now turn their attention to the Baltimore Ravens, who are coming off a 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson missed Monday’s practice, though coach John Harbaugh did not provide details on his absence. Jackson's status will become clearer once the Ravens release their first injury report on Wednesday.
The Raiders will need to address their offensive and defensive struggles quickly if they hope to turn things around in their second game. Pierce’s vision for a physical, balanced team will be tested again, and the pressure is on to improve both the run game and downfield passing attack.
Key Points:
Physicality Lacking: Coach Antonio Pierce expressed frustration with the Raiders' lack of physicality, especially compared to the Lions' performance.
Offensive Struggles: The Raiders managed only 71 rushing yards and failed to sustain drives, leading to defensive fatigue.
Injury Concerns: Defensive end Tyree Wilson suffered a knee injury, and the team may consider bringing in free agent Yannick Ngakoue.
Minshew’s Conservative Play: Quarterback Gardner Minshew completed short passes and failed to attack downfield, a point of concern for Pierce.
Looking Forward: The Raiders face the Baltimore Ravens next, with uncertainty surrounding the availability of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
🚅 New High-Speed Trains for Vegas to California Line Will Reach 220 mph, Debut in 2028
Brightline West provided the first look at the interiors of the train sets that will run between Las Vegas and Southern California, as part of the $12 billion high-speed rail project. The new renderings, released Monday, showcase the American Pioneer 220 (AP220) train sets, which will be built by Siemens Mobility at a $60 million, 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Horseheads, New York. Production is slated to begin in 2026.
The AP220 train sets will each accommodate 450 passengers and reach speeds of up to 220 mph, allowing for a two-hour trip between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California. From there, passengers can connect to Los Angeles via Southern California’s Metrolink rail line. The trains will represent a major leap in U.S. rail transportation, setting new standards for speed and innovation, according to Brightline CEO Michael Reininger.
“For the first time ever in the U.S., we will be manufacturing trains that will compete with the best in the world,” Reininger said in a statement. “Reaching speeds of over 200 mph, these trains will be marked by the latest innovations designed for the modern traveler and establish a new benchmark in transportation.”
Siemens' Investment and Job Creation in Upstate New York
The new Siemens Mobility facility in upstate New York represents a significant investment in U.S. transportation infrastructure, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the development, stating that it will pave the way for high-speed rail in the U.S., something that once seemed like a distant dream.
“Siemens’ investment in upstate New York will lay the foundation for the next chapter of our nation’s transportation future,” Schumer said. The Horseheads facility is expected to employ 300 people, with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) representing the workforce under a memorandum of understanding.
Progress on the Brightline West Project
The Brightline West project is moving closer to realization, with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) finalizing grant recipient agreements with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) this month. The project has already secured $3 billion in funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with an additional $3.5 billion in private activity bonds approved. Brightline will rely on a combination of debt and private capital to cover the remaining construction costs.
“Millions of annual riders between Las Vegas and Southern California stand to benefit from the train sets to be built in Upstate New York, and I know the local community will benefit as well,” said FRA Administrator Amit Bose.
Construction of the high-speed rail line is expected to begin later this year, with the goal of completing the project ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Future of High-Speed Rail in the U.S.
The Brightline West project marks a significant step in advancing high-speed rail in the U.S., providing a faster, more sustainable alternative to driving between Las Vegas and Southern California. The train’s ability to reach 220 mph will drastically reduce travel times and is expected to attract millions of passengers annually.
The $12 billion project reflects a broader push to modernize the nation’s infrastructure, and Brightline hopes to set a precedent for future high-speed rail developments across the country. With the project aiming for completion before the 2028 Olympics, Brightline is on track to reshape regional transportation in the American West.

Many of the watch parties will take place in local restaurants and private homes, emphasizing community engagement and mobilization.
Additionally, the Harris-Walz campaign is organizing an “influencer watch party,” inviting social media personalities from platforms like TikTok and Instagram to participate. This strategy is designed to reach younger voters and amplify the campaign’s message online.
Engaging Voters and Building Momentum
Both campaigns are using these events to energize their supporters and drive voter engagement ahead of the 2024 election.
