🚗 Nevada Auto Insurance Rates to Rise in October: Allstate, Farmers, and More to Hike Premiums

Nevada residents may want to check with their auto insurance providers soon, as six major auto insurers in the state are set to raise rates by at least 10 percent in October, according to the Nevada Division of Insurance. This follows a nationwide trend of increasing auto insurance costs, with the Consumer Price Index for auto insurance rising by 18.6 percent from July 2023 to July 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Why Are Rates Increasing?

The Nevada Division of Insurance points to several factors driving the rate hikes. Rising vehicle expenses, insurance fraud, increased litigation, poor driving habits, and the growing population in Las Vegas are all contributing to the cost increases. Additionally, property and casualty carriers operating in the state have incurred significant losses, further exacerbating the need for higher premiums.

“Automotive insurance rate increases are a national trend and issue,” the division stated. “Recent increases can also be attributed to losses incurred by property and casualty carriers operating in Nevada.”

Nevada currently ranks fourth in the U.S. for the highest auto insurance rates, with residents paying an average of $3,549 annually for full coverage. According to Insurance Business America, the state's relaxed alcohol laws and the large number of partygoers in Las Vegas also contribute to higher auto insurance costs, as the city sees a higher frequency of accidents.

Companies Increasing Rates

The rate hikes will impact thousands of Nevada drivers, and several insurers are planning double-digit increases:

  • Allstate Fire and Casualty: Will raise rates by 10.8 percent starting on October 28, affecting 94,804 Nevadans. The company’s indicated rate change was also 10.8 percent.

  • Farmers Group Property and Casualty Insurance: Will increase rates by 24 percent, affecting 8,033 Nevadans. Initially, the indicated rate change presented to the division was around 60 percent.

  • Amica Mutual: Starting on October 1, Amica Mutual will increase rates by 17.9 percent for 2,362 private automotive customers in Nevada. The indicated rate change was nearly 34 percent.

  • Country Financial: Customers of its three branches—Country Mutual, Country Preferred, and Country Casualty—will see rates increase starting on October 9.

    • Country Mutual Insurance: Will raise rates by 31.8 percent, impacting 1,856 Nevadans. The indicated rate change was over 46 percent.

    • Country Preferred Insurance: Will increase rates by 29.5 percent, affecting 3,942 Nevadans. The indicated rate change was over 44 percent.

    • Country Casualty Insurance: Will hike rates by 25.4 percent, affecting 225 Nevadans. The indicated rate change was nearly 44 percent.

Why Rate Hikes Vary

While insurers must go through the Nevada Division of Insurance to request a rate change, the division often approves a rate lower than the original proposal. This is part of the division’s mandate to protect consumers while ensuring insurers remain financially solvent. Approved rates cannot be “excessive or discriminatory,” according to the division’s statement.

Insurance companies like Country Financial encourage their clients to meet with representatives to discuss individual situations and explore options to manage risks effectively. "As claims become more costly due to inflation, lawsuit abuse, and increases in everything from repair-related labor rates to parts costs, insurance carriers around the country have been adjusting rates,” Country Financial explained in a statement.

What Should Drivers Do?

As these rate hikes roll out in October, Nevada residents should stay informed and consider reviewing their auto insurance policies. Drivers are encouraged to shop around for the best rates and consider bundling policies or raising deductibles to offset the increase in premiums.

Summary of Key Rate Increases:

  • Allstate Fire and Casualty: +10.8% for 94,804 Nevadans (Oct. 28).

  • Farmers Group Property and Casualty Insurance: +24% for 8,033 Nevadans (Oct. 1).

  • Amica Mutual: +17.9% for 2,362 Nevadans (Oct. 1).

  • Country Financial (various branches):

    • Country Mutual: +31.8% for 1,856 Nevadans (Oct. 9).

    • Country Preferred: +29.5% for 3,942 Nevadans (Oct. 9).

    • Country Casualty: +25.4% for 225 Nevadans (Oct. 9).

🏀 A’ja Wilson Sets WNBA Scoring Record, Leads Aces to 86-75 Win Against Fever

A’ja Wilson made WNBA history on Wednesday night, breaking the league’s single-season scoring record during the Las Vegas Aces’ 86-75 victory over the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The star forward finished the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds, pushing her season total to 956 points and surpassing Jewell Loyd’s previous record of 939 points set last season.

Wilson, who only needed 11 points to break the record, did so with her 941st point in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter. With four games left in the Aces’ regular-season schedule, she now has a shot at becoming the first player in WNBA history to reach 1,000 points in a season.

Emotional Milestone for Wilson

After the game, an emotional Wilson credited her teammates for her success. "It feels great," she said. "Now people can stop talking about it." Overwhelmed with emotion, she continued, "My teammates are the ones — they’re the heartbeat, they keep me going. I don’t get zero points, obviously, without them passing me the basketball. The things we go through in our personal lives, we lock in for each other every single day, and that’s what you see on the court."

Aces reserve Alysha Clark, who also shed tears during the postgame press conference, praised Wilson’s relentless work ethic. "I see the hours she puts in that nobody sees. She’s her hardest critic," Clark said. "That’s something that I think needs to be celebrated."

Bench Boosts the Aces’ Performance

The Aces (23-13) received a significant contribution from their bench, with the reserves combining for 30 points. Alysha Clark and Tiffany Hayes were key contributors, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sydney Colson, though only scoring two points, had a team-high +19 in the box score and recorded four assists in 12 minutes.

The team’s balanced effort helped Wilson return to action after missing the Aces’ previous game against the New York Liberty due to an ankle injury.

Aces Overcome Early Struggles

The game didn’t start smoothly for Las Vegas, as Indiana jumped to a 7-0 lead while the Aces struggled with their shooting. The team shot just 35 percent (7-for-20) from the field in the first quarter. However, Wilson’s hot hand, scoring four consecutive jumpers to open her scoring, allowed the Aces to take control and never trail again.

Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever (19-18) with 24 points, while rookie sensation Caitlin Clark added 16.

Chippy Game and Hammon’s Technical Foul

Aces head coach Becky Hammon received her fifth technical foul of the season in the tense matchup, marking the most for any WNBA coach this year. Hammon was frustrated when the officials allowed Indiana coach Christie Sides extra time to consider a challenge during a foul called on Fever center Temi Fagbenle as Chelsea Gray scored.

“They were trying to look on the replay to see if they should challenge it, and they were delaying the game, and it’s not right,” Hammon said. “That’s what I was upset about... I fully deserved a tech.”

Hammon is now tied with Aces guard Kelsey Plum, Caitlin Clark, Arike Ogunbowale, and Teaira McCowan for the fourth-most technical fouls in the WNBA this season.

Looking Ahead

The Aces will face the Fever again at 4:30 p.m. on Friday as they continue their pursuit of postseason success and Wilson aims for more milestones. With four games remaining, all eyes will be on Wilson as she approaches the unprecedented 1,000-point mark in a single season.

Key Points:

  • A’ja Wilson broke the WNBA’s single-season scoring record, finishing the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

  • Wilson’s total stands at 956 points, with four games left to potentially reach 1,000 points.

  • The Aces’ bench contributed 30 points in the 86-75 win over the Indiana Fever.

  • Coach Becky Hammon received her fifth technical foul of the season in a heated exchange with officials.

🏫 New 55+ Community and Single-Family Homes Approved for Summerlin West

Plans for two new neighborhoods in Summerlin West were approved during Tuesday's Las Vegas Planning Commission meeting, paving the way for hundreds of new homes, including a community specifically designed for residents ages 55 and older.

Age-Restricted "Active Adult" Community

The first neighborhood, developed by Taylor Morrison and GCW Engineers, is an age-restricted "Active Adult" community featuring 387 units located at the northwest corner of Lake Mead Boulevard and Park Drift Trail. This 88-acre development will offer a mix of detached and attached family homes as well as duplexes, with lot sizes ranging from 3,600 to 11,600 square feet. Each home will provide two parking spaces and at least 100 square feet of private yard space.

One of the key features of the neighborhood will be its "community resort amenity," which will serve as a central hub for residents. The amenity will include a clubhouse, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, a swimming pool, meeting spaces, and parking lots, creating a resort-like atmosphere tailored to the 55-and-up demographic.

71 New Single-Family Homes

In addition to the age-restricted development, another neighborhood from PN II Inc. and Pulte Group will bring 71 single-family homes to Summerlin West. Located on 17 acres on the north side of Sandstone Rise Avenue, west of Grand Park Boulevard, these homes will feature lot sizes between 6,490 and 7,250 square feet. Unlike the "Active Adult" community, no additional amenities are planned for this neighborhood.

Summerlin's Expansion

These new developments are part of the ongoing expansion of Summerlin, one of the largest and most popular master-planned communities in Las Vegas. Though Howard Hughes Holdings, the developer behind Summerlin, has not commented on the projects, the addition of these neighborhoods reflects continued growth in the western part of the valley.

Key Points:

  • Taylor Morrison’s 55+ community will feature 387 units, gated entrances, and a resort-style amenity center.

  • PN II Inc. and Pulte Group’s neighborhood will include 71 single-family homes with lot sizes between 6,490 and 7,250 square feet.

  • Both developments are part of the ongoing expansion of the Summerlin master-planned community.

Trump to Hold Las Vegas Rally Days After Debate, Highlighting “No Tax on Tips” Plan

Presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally in Las Vegas on Friday at the Expo World Market Center, just days after his high-profile debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. This rally marks Trump’s latest visit to Nevada, where he will continue to campaign heavily in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Economic Focus and "No Tax on Tips" Policy

At the Las Vegas rally, Trump is expected to emphasize his economic plans, drawing a sharp contrast between his policies and those of Vice President Harris. Central to his message will be his proposal to eliminate taxes on tips, an idea he first introduced during a trip to Las Vegas in June. This policy is designed to appeal to service industry workers in Las Vegas, where tips make up a significant portion of many workers’ incomes.

In addition to discussing his tax proposals, Trump is likely to revisit key elements of his economic platform, such as job creation, deregulation, and his plan to boost American manufacturing. The former president has consistently promoted his economic record during his previous term in office, touting low unemployment rates and robust growth prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent Visit and RFK Jr. Endorsement

Trump’s rally comes on the heels of his last visit to Las Vegas at the end of August, where he garnered attention for thanking Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for his endorsement. The endorsement from Kennedy, a Democrat-turned-independent who has drawn attention for his controversial views, further fueled speculation about cross-party appeal and unconventional alliances in the 2024 race.

Rally Details and Ticket Information

The rally will be held at the Expo World Market Center, a venue known for hosting large-scale events. Those interested in attending can secure free tickets by visiting event.donaldjtrump.com. Trump's rallies have long been a central feature of his campaigns, with large crowds and a focus on energizing his voter base.

Democratic Response

In response to Trump's upcoming visit, Nevada State Democratic Party Chairwoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the former president. She described Trump as “incoherent, angry, and unhinged,” referencing his performance during the presidential debate earlier in the week. Monroe-Moreno emphasized that Nevadans are looking for a “New Way Forward” under the leadership of Vice President Harris, signaling the intense political rivalry between the two campaigns.

Significance of Nevada in 2024

Nevada remains a key battleground state in the 2024 election, with its diverse population and swing-state status making it a priority for both parties. Trump’s frequent visits underscore the importance of winning over Nevada’s voters, particularly in the Las Vegas area, which has a large service industry workforce that could be swayed by his tax proposals. At the same time, Democrats are working hard to maintain their foothold in the state, focusing on issues like healthcare, immigration, and the economy.

As Trump and Harris continue to clash on policy, Nevada will likely remain a focal point for both campaigns as they work to sway undecided voters and secure a win in the state.

Key Points:

  • Rally Date and Location: Donald Trump will hold a rally on Friday at the Expo World Market Center in Las Vegas.

  • Economic Focus: Trump will highlight his economic policies, including his “no tax on tips” plan, appealing to service industry workers in Nevada.

  • Ticket Information: Free tickets for the rally can be secured at event.donaldjtrump.com.

  • Democratic Response: Nevada Democrats, led by Chairwoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno, have criticized Trump ahead of his visit, pushing for a “New Way Forward” with Harris.

  • Nevada’s Role in 2024: As a key battleground state, Nevada continues to draw significant attention from both campaigns.
