🏫 Governor Lombardo to Investigate Clark County School District Amid Budget Crisis

Governor Joe Lombardo has announced a formal investigation into the Clark County School District’s (CCSD) budget following mounting concerns over potential financial mismanagement that could lead to teacher layoffs and overcrowded classrooms. Lombardo's decision comes after the Clark County Education Association (CCEA) publicly called for state intervention, citing what it describes as systemic failures in how the district manages its finances.

Governor’s Response

“Governor Lombardo is concerned by the recent operational and fiscal issues within the Clark County School District and the Clark County School District Board of Trustees,” a spokesperson for Lombardo stated. “To address these concerns, Governor Lombardo will use all of the state’s authority to investigate the school district’s budget and help determine corrective next steps.”

The announcement followed a Friday morning press conference by the CCEA, during which the union condemned the district's handling of its finances, specifically referencing a warning sent to schools about a potential budget deficit. The deficit, they argue, threatens to create a cascading effect that could result in faculty reductions and larger class sizes, further straining resources in the nation’s fifth-largest school district.

Union Criticizes Budgeting Shortfalls

CCEA leaders expressed frustration that the district failed to properly account for an 8% salary increase for licensed professionals in its latest budget. The raise, agreed upon in December 2023, was intended to support teachers and educational staff after extensive negotiations. However, many schools now find themselves unable to reconcile their operating costs with the district’s current budget allocations.

“Once again, we find ourselves before you due to CCSD’s failed leadership,” said CCEA President Marie Neisses. She criticized the district for issuing a message earlier in the week warning of budget constraints without clearly explaining the potential impacts on school operations.

John Vellardita, the Executive Director of CCEA, echoed Neisses’ sentiments, calling on the state to provide greater oversight of the district’s finances. He confirmed he had already spoken with Governor Lombardo and Nevada's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jhone M. Ebert, about the issue. While Ebert was unavailable for comment at the time of publication, Vellardita expressed confidence that both state officials were taking the situation seriously.

District’s CFO Terminated Amid Financial Turmoil

The district has faced repeated questions over its financial transparency and planning. Adding to the uncertainty, CCSD’s Chief Financial Officer, Jason Goudie, was unexpectedly terminated the day before the CCEA's press conference. Goudie, who had served in the role since 2017, claimed he was fired without explanation. He pointed out that the projected budget deficit is unrelated to the salary increases, blaming the shortfall on prior mismanagement by district leadership.

Goudie revealed that former Superintendent Jesus Jara had anticipated a possible budget deficit during his tenure but did not disclose the exact size or specifics of the shortfall. He said the district was still in the process of preparing its overall budget when the potential deficit was identified.

In an internal message to staff, Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell acknowledged that the district had identified a possible budget gap, though she was unable to confirm whether a central budget deficit definitively exists. She apologized for any confusion and assured staff that the district would continue working to clarify the financial situation.

Salary Hikes Fueling Budget Woes?

The 8% salary increase for licensed professionals has significantly impacted individual school budgets. According to documents provided by CCSD, the average salary of licensed educators, previously around $115,000, has now risen to $120,700, including benefits. While the raises themselves are not directly tied to the initial projected shortfall, Goudie explained that schools are grappling with increased operating costs as they work to adjust their budgets to account for the salary hike.

The effects of the deficit will vary by school, depending on the size of their staff. Schools with more teachers will experience a greater financial strain, which could ultimately lead to staff reductions and other cost-saving measures unless the district finds a way to fill the budget gap.

Union Demands Accountability

During the press conference, Vellardita did not hold back in criticizing district leadership, calling Goudie a scapegoat for deeper issues within CCSD's management. He accused Interim Superintendent Larsen-Mitchell and Board of Trustees President Evelyn Garcia Morales of failing to take responsibility for the budgeting errors. "Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell failed her first test, and this is yet another example of why we need stronger leadership," Vellardita said.

Vellardita also raised concerns over why a deficit would occur in the first place, especially given that CCSD received additional funding during the last legislative session. He argued that if the district’s financial issues are not addressed, future state funding for the school system could be at risk. "We should not have a deficit considering the extra funding CCSD received this year. This is mismanagement at a gross level," he added.

The CCEA urged the district to cover the cost of any budget shortfall using available resources. Vellardita pointed to the district's $258 million in carryover funds from the previous fiscal year and an additional $150 million in the unassigned ending fund balance, half of which is available for use. He also noted that the district has money earmarked for positions that remain unfilled, suggesting that those funds could be diverted to offset any budgetary deficit.

“Not one school should have to make difficult decisions or cut teachers due to errors on the part of the school district when there are these available resources,” Vellardita said, insisting that schools shouldn’t bear the brunt of CCSD's financial miscalculations.

Parents and Principals Speak Out

Parents and school administrators have started raising concerns about the district’s budgeting practices. Some principals have taken the unprecedented step of publicly voicing frustrations over the looming budget issues, with some acting as whistleblowers by sharing internal communications with the public. Vellardita praised these individuals for their transparency, stating, "Kudos to the whistleblowers on the front lines."

He encouraged parents to reach out to CCSD trustees and demand accountability for how the district is handling its financial issues, especially given the potential impact on their children's education.

In response to these calls for action, Interim Superintendent Larsen-Mitchell noted that Nevada state law restricts the district from reallocating school-specific funds. However, she affirmed that CCSD would work closely with principals to help schools facing budgetary challenges and find solutions to prevent any significant impact on students.

Looking Forward

As the investigation into CCSD’s finances begins, many are left wondering how the district will navigate its way through this crisis. The school district has not yet provided a detailed response to questions about the size of the projected deficit or how it plans to rectify the situation.

Governor Lombardo's intervention could bring much-needed scrutiny to the district's financial operations, but it remains to be seen what the long-term implications will be for CCSD, its staff, and the students it serves.

🏀 Aces Face Familiar Foe Seattle Storm in Best-of-Three Series to Kick Off Playoff Campaign

The Las Vegas Aces, seeded No. 4 in the WNBA playoffs, are set to begin their pursuit of a third consecutive championship as they face the Seattle Storm in a best-of-three series starting Sunday at Michelob Ultra Arena. Aces coach Becky Hammon anticipates a tough battle, calling it a "dogfight," with both teams familiar playoff foes. This marks the third postseason matchup between the Aces and the Storm in the last five years, but the first time they’ll meet in the opening round.

The Aces seek to defend their title after defeating the Storm in the 2022 semifinals, which avenged a 2020 WNBA Finals sweep by Seattle during the COVID-19 bubble season.

“They’re very scary. They have a lot of experience,” Hammon said, emphasizing the challenge posed by Seattle despite Las Vegas taking the regular season series 3-1.

Season Series Recap

The Aces and Storm met four times during the regular season, with Las Vegas winning three of those contests:

  • June 7: Storm 78, Aces 65 (Michelob Ultra Arena)

  • June 19: Aces 94, Storm 83 (Michelob Ultra Arena)

  • July 10: Aces 84, Storm 79 (Climate Pledge Arena)

  • Sept. 17: Aces 85, Storm 72 (Climate Pledge Arena)

Las Vegas displayed dominance in their wins, taking two games by double digits, while the Storm managed to pull off a victory early in the season. Since that June loss, the Aces have fine-tuned their game, winning nine of their last 10 regular-season games. In their most recent matchup on September 17, star forward A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 21 points and seven rebounds, helping the team close out the season with a win.

Despite missing their leading scorer, Jewell Loyd, in that final game, Seattle held a 65-64 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Aces went on a decisive 21-7 run to secure the win.

Aces Finding Their Groove

The Aces have picked up steam as the season progressed, particularly on defense. Over their last 10 games, they have consistently turned defense into offense, which has long been a key aspect of Hammon’s coaching philosophy. Las Vegas has held teams under 80 points in 10 of their last 11 games, allowing them to thrive in transition, a hallmark of their playstyle in recent years.

“We’re getting better slowly, especially defensively,” said guard Kelsey Plum after scoring 21 points in the final regular-season game against the Storm. “When we’re able to get stops, that’s when we play in transition... That’s our bread and butter.”

In their season finale against the Dallas Wings, the Aces rested their core players, including Wilson, Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray, yet still managed to win 98-87, showcasing the depth of their bench.

Changing Winds for Seattle

Much has changed for the Seattle Storm since their previous playoff encounters with the Aces. Key players from their championship runs, Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird, are no longer with the team. Stewart left in free agency, and Bird retired after the 2022 season. In their absence, the Storm have rebuilt around their remaining stars, including Jewell Loyd and center Ezi Magbegor. Seattle also made significant free-agent signings, adding eight-time All-Star forward Nneka Ogwumike and six-time All-Star guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, creating a formidable lineup.

“They have a legit Big Three, Big Four. They’re playing really well,” Hammon acknowledged, noting the challenges posed by the Storm’s revamped roster.

X-Factors

Storm: Gabby Williams
Williams, a former all-defensive team selection, rejoined Seattle late in the season after helping France earn a silver medal at the Summer Olympics. In 12 games, she averaged 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, providing a spark for the Storm both defensively and offensively.

Aces: Tiffany Hayes
Hayes, a key contender for the Sixth Player of the Year award, has been an essential contributor off the bench for Las Vegas since joining mid-season. The 2017 All-Star scored a season-high 21 points in the Aces' final game, boosting her case for the award. Hayes has been highly efficient, posting an offensive rating of 119 points per 100 possessions, tied with Wilson for the best on the team.

Conclusion

With both teams fielding strong rosters, the first-round series promises to be a competitive battle. The Aces, seeking a historic third consecutive championship, will rely on their defensive intensity and depth, while the Storm hope their star power can help them upset the reigning champions. Game 1 of the series tips off Sunday at Michelob Ultra Arena.

🎰 Paris Las Vegas Unveils New Skybridge to Versailles Tower Following $100 Million Renovation

The Paris Las Vegas casino-hotel took a major step forward in its ongoing transformation on Friday with the official opening of the Paris Skybridge, a pedestrian walkway that links the Paris resort to the newly renovated Versailles Tower. The bridge, which had been eagerly awaited, offers seamless access between the two properties, both of which are operated by Caesars Entertainment. The unveiling of the Skybridge followed the receipt of a certificate of occupancy from Clark County earlier in the day, marking the final approval needed to open the bridge to the public.

The Versailles Tower, formerly known as the Jubilee Tower when it was part of Bally’s Las Vegas, became part of the Paris resort as part of a comprehensive renovation effort. The rebranding and renovation of Bally’s into Horseshoe Las Vegas also coincided with the integration of the tower into Paris. Caesars Entertainment announced the move last year as part of a larger $100 million investment into upgrading rooms, suites, and amenities at Paris Las Vegas, which has been a staple on the Strip since it opened in 1999.

A Seamless Connection Between Two Iconic Resorts

The Paris Skybridge plays a key role in connecting guests between Paris Las Vegas and Horseshoe, enhancing accessibility and offering guests more convenience as they move between the two iconic Strip properties. The elevated bridge, located near the Caesars Sportsbook and the Eiffel Tower experience gift shop at Paris, spans 253 feet from end to end. An 82-foot section crosses over a service road between the two properties, allowing guests to easily walk between the resorts without needing to navigate busy sidewalks or streets.

“We’ve invested more than $100 million into renovating the Versailles Tower at Paris Las Vegas, and the pedestrian bridge is a key component of this exciting transformation,” said Ken Ostempowski, senior vice president and general manager of Paris Las Vegas. “Now that the bridge is open, guests staying in the new rooms can conveniently access their favorite offerings at both the Paris and Horseshoe resorts — from restaurants and bars to the casino floor, entertainment, and attractions.”

The Renovated Versailles Tower

The renovation of the Versailles Tower has been a significant part of the ongoing upgrades at Paris Las Vegas. Formerly known as the Jubilee Tower, the Versailles Tower adds 756 rooms and suites to the Paris property, contributing to the resort's total room count and giving it a fresh, modernized look that aligns with the resort’s Parisian theme. Some of the most notable features of the renovation include the addition of balconies to select rooms. In July, 38 rooms featuring 55-square-foot balconies opened, offering guests stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip and the Fountains of Bellagio. These rooms, located on the west-facing side of the tower, provide an elevated luxury experience for guests who want to take in the sights and sounds of Las Vegas from the comfort of their rooms.

The integration of the Versailles Tower into Paris Las Vegas allows Caesars Entertainment to offer a more unified experience across both Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas, expanding the range of amenities and accommodations available to guests. By connecting the two resorts via the Skybridge, Caesars has created a more cohesive visitor experience, where guests can enjoy the best of both properties without having to leave the comfort and security of the resorts.

Transformation of Bally’s into Horseshoe

The transformation of Bally’s into Horseshoe Las Vegas was part of a broader rebranding effort by Caesars Entertainment, which sought to bring the Horseshoe name — a brand synonymous with classic Las Vegas and high-stakes gambling — back to the Strip. The rebranding included a refresh of the casino, rooms, and overall aesthetic of the property. As part of this transformation, the former Jubilee Tower was absorbed into Paris Las Vegas and rebranded as the Versailles Tower. This move not only revitalized the former Bally’s property but also strengthened the offerings at Paris.

Guests of Paris can now easily access a wide range of dining, entertainment, and gaming options across both resorts. The convenient connection between the two properties makes it easier for visitors to explore all the amenities both Paris Las Vegas and Horseshoe have to offer, from the Eiffel Tower Experience and Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris to the recently renovated casino floor and Jack Binion’s Steakhouse at Horseshoe.

Paris Las Vegas Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The unveiling of the Paris Skybridge is also part of a broader celebration marking Paris Las Vegas’ 25th anniversary. The Paris-themed resort, complete with its signature replica Eiffel Tower, first opened its doors on September 1, 1999, and has remained one of the Strip’s most beloved and recognizable landmarks. The renovations and the addition of the Versailles Tower are seen as key upgrades that will continue to attract visitors as the resort looks toward its next 25 years.

With its distinctive blend of Parisian architecture, upscale dining, and prime location on the Strip, Paris Las Vegas has consistently been a top destination for visitors looking for a mix of elegance and excitement. The addition of the Skybridge and the renovated Versailles Tower further solidifies Paris Las Vegas’ reputation as a premier resort, offering guests an even more luxurious and convenient experience.

Looking Ahead

As the Paris Skybridge opens to the public, Caesars Entertainment expects the walkway to enhance the overall guest experience by making it easier to explore and enjoy both Paris Las Vegas and Horseshoe Las Vegas. The investment in the Versailles Tower and the Skybridge is just one part of the company's broader commitment to continuing to modernize and elevate its Strip properties.

As Las Vegas continues to evolve, the addition of pedestrian walkways and seamless connections between resorts represents a growing trend of making the city more accessible and guest-friendly, ensuring that visitors can easily explore everything that the Strip has to offer without the hassle of crossing busy streets or relying on outside transportation.

AI Memes Shape 2024 Election, Raising Concerns Over Misinformation

With the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaching, concerns over the misuse of generative artificial intelligence (AI) have grown. Experts initially feared a flood of highly convincing AI-generated deepfakes might confuse and mislead voters. So far, that hasn't fully materialized. Instead, the internet has been flooded with absurd, often exaggerated, AI-generated content, such as a video of Donald Trump riding a cat while wielding an assault rifle, or images of Vice President Kamala Harris in outlandish outfits.

While many of these AI-generated memes are so cartoonish that viewers likely won’t take them seriously, their rapid spread still presents challenges. Even seemingly humorous content can carry underlying political messages that play into false or harmful narratives, particularly when shared by influential figures.

For example, Donald Trump and his allies have used AI-generated memes to promote unfounded conspiracy theories. One such meme, shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, depicted him on a luxury jet surrounded by cats and ducks, playing into a baseless conspiracy theory about Haitian migrants harming pets in Springfield, Ohio. Other memes have shown kittens holding signs urging people to vote for Trump to "stop them from being eaten." Francesca Tripodi, an expert on online propaganda, noted that these AI-generated memes are new tools being used to amplify old anti-immigration narratives.

AI as a Political Tool

While Trump and his supporters have embraced AI-generated images as a tool for entertainment and messaging, the phenomenon is not limited to them. Some Democratic users have also dabbled in AI, producing memes that mock Trump or other public figures like billionaire Elon Musk. However, Kamala Harris' campaign has mostly avoided using AI-generated content, instead focusing on traditional social media trends and non-AI-generated memes.

Campaigns across the political spectrum have long dealt with disinformation, but AI makes it easier and faster to create and spread content. The accessibility of AI image generators allows anyone with an internet connection to produce hyper-realistic images, which can be used to grab attention and drive engagement online.

Concerns Over AI’s Impact on Elections

Although much of the current AI-generated political content appears comical or outlandish, experts warn of the potential for more sinister uses. Deepfakes—highly realistic AI-generated videos or audio—have been used in elections worldwide to deceive voters. In Slovakia, AI-generated audio clips were used to falsely suggest election rigging, and in New Hampshire, deepfake robocalls impersonating President Joe Biden were sent to Democratic voters.

While Trump has embraced AI-generated imagery to entertain his supporters, he has also expressed concerns about the dangers of AI, calling it "very dangerous" and "scary" in an interview earlier this year. Some Republicans, including Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, have voiced discomfort with the increasing reliance on AI-generated memes, preferring not to engage with this style of communication.

A New Era of Political Messaging

AI-generated content is now part of the political landscape. While some images may be dismissed as satire, their rapid creation and potential for spread could escalate into something more problematic. As the election season heats up, campaigns will continue to navigate the challenges posed by generative AI, while lawmakers and tech experts grapple with the technology's implications for political discourse and election security.
