🦹♂️ Las Vegas Gunfire Plummets 27.5% in 2024, Boosted by New ShotSpotter Devices and Drones
Gunfire incidents across the Las Vegas Valley are down by almost a third in 2024, according to statistics recorded by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) using ShotSpotter technology. The program, active since 2017, uses gunfire detection devices across 27 square miles to help police respond more effectively to shootings. This year, new devices were installed in the Northwest Valley as part of efforts to reduce crime.
In 2023, the valley saw an increase in gunfire incidents, but LVMPD credits a "holistic" policing approach for the significant drop in 2024. This approach involves collaboration between patrol officers, detectives, and the use of advanced technology like ShotSpotter to crack down on crime. On average, gunfire incidents have decreased by 27.5% each month this year.
“[ShotSpotter] gets officers and medical staff to victims quicker, helps locate suspects, crime scenes, and recover firearms,” said Lieutenant Bill Steinmetz in a previous interview, describing the system as a "game changer" for both the department and the community.
Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson shared additional insights, noting that the highest rates of gunfire occur between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Fridays, allowing police to prepare and focus their resources accordingly. LVMPD also continues to invest in advanced crime-fighting tools, including 38 drones donated to the department, equipped to avoid obstacles if attacked by suspects.
🏀 Las Vegas Aces Begin Playoff Run, Eye Historic Three-Peat
The Las Vegas Aces, just eight wins away from a third consecutive WNBA championship, are ready to begin their quest for a rare "three-peat," a feat only achieved by a select group of teams in major American sports history. Joining the ranks of the 2002 Los Angeles Lakers, 2000 New York Yankees, and 1998 Chicago Bulls would solidify the Aces’ dynasty status. Their journey kicks off this Sunday when they face the Seattle Storm in a best-of-three series at Michelob Ultra Arena.
Peaking at the Right Time
Despite a 6-6 start to the season, the Aces ended on a high note, winning nine of their last 10 games to secure the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. Coach Becky Hammon emphasized the importance of the team peaking at the right moment: “If I had to pick a time to play well, it’d be at the end of the season. Not the beginning or the middle. We want to be playing our best basketball. Right now, that’s what it’s looking like.”
This season, the Aces finished with 27 wins—one more than their first championship-winning season in 2022. However, the competition has stiffened, with the New York Liberty (32-8), Minnesota Lynx (30-10), and Connecticut Sun (28-12) all finishing ahead of them in the standings, making this year’s playoff run their toughest challenge yet.
Chelsea Gray’s Crucial Return
One key factor in the Aces' slow start was the absence of star point guard Chelsea Gray, who missed the first 12 games recovering from a foot injury sustained in the 2022 WNBA Finals. Gray returned on June 19 in a 94-83 win over the Storm, and the Aces surged to a 21-7 record the rest of the way.
Gray, the 2022 Finals MVP, had a quieter statistical season this year—averaging 8.6 points and 4.9 assists per game, her lowest numbers in years—but her presence was critical to the team’s improved defense. With Gray back on the floor, opponents’ 3-point shooting percentage dropped from 39.3% to 32%, and the Aces allowed just 78.9 points per game compared to 85.7 during her absence.
A’ja Wilson’s Dominance
At the heart of the Aces’ success is star forward A’ja Wilson, who is likely to be named WNBA MVP for the third time. Wilson followed up her stellar 2022 season with an even more dominant 2023, averaging a league-high 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and a career-high 2.6 blocks per game. Coach Hammon praised Wilson, calling her “a rare player” for her ability to dominate on both ends of the floor.
Wilson’s leadership and clutch performances have been the backbone of the Aces’ previous two titles, and she will be key to their hopes for a three-peat. She acknowledges the pressure of being a superstar but thrives on it. “There are days I hate being A’ja Wilson. I hate it,” she told her teammates after becoming the first player to score 1,000 points in a season. “But when I come into work and I see y’all smiling and I see y’all happy, it makes me who I am.”
Challenges Ahead
While Wilson and Gray provide a solid foundation, the Aces will need to be at their best to contend with strong competition in the playoffs. The New York Liberty, Minnesota Lynx, and Connecticut Sun have all had exceptional seasons and pose significant threats to Las Vegas’ championship hopes.
Seattle, their first-round opponent, will be short-handed for Game 1, as center Ezi Magbegor will miss the game due to a concussion. Magbegor, who averaged 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season, was Seattle’s best hope to contain Wilson. However, the Aces are not underestimating the Storm, knowing that in playoff basketball, anything can happen.
What’s Next for the Aces?
With the playoffs now underway, the Aces aim to cement their place in history with a third consecutive championship. Wilson, Gray, and the rest of the team are focused on playing their best basketball at the right time, knowing that achieving a three-peat would elevate their legacy to legendary status.
As Wilson put it, “It’s a whole new basketball you get a chance to play when it comes to playoffs. It doesn’t matter what number is by your team’s name. You just got to go out there and start playing your best basketball, and that’s what we’re trying to strive toward.”
With the first game of the playoffs set for Sunday, the Aces are ready to take the next step in their quest for greatness. If they succeed, they’ll join an elite group of sports dynasties, proving once again why they’re one of the best teams in WNBA history.
🎶 New Kids on the Block Bring First-Ever Residency to Dolby Live, Tickets on Sale Friday
For the first time in their 40-year history, New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) will headline a Las Vegas residency. The iconic boy band, which captivated fans throughout the 1980s and 1990s, is bringing their show to Dolby Live at Park MGM in 2025. Titled “The Right Stuff,” after one of their most famous hits, the residency will span 16 performances and promises a fan experience like no other. Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Pacific Time this Friday, with pre-sale options available at Ticketmaster.com/NKOTBVEGAS.
The scheduled performance dates are June 20, 21, 25, 27, 28; July 2, 3, 5; and November 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 12, 14, and 15, giving fans multiple opportunities to catch the group live throughout the year.
A Major Milestone for NKOTB
The residency marks a significant milestone in the careers of Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood, who have continued to perform and tour for their dedicated fanbase—known as "Blockheads"—since their reunion in 2008. Despite their long history, this will be the first time the group has committed to a residency in one location, making it a unique and exciting moment for both the band and their fans.
The announcement was made during a fan event on Thursday night at The Park near T-Mobile Arena, where the band arrived on a double-decker bus to the delight of their supporters. The event featured a Q&A session with the group, and the energy of their fanbase was palpable. Donnie Wahlberg, the de facto leader of the group, described the experience as "surreal" and something the band had dreamed of since their early days.
“It’s crazy. It’s surreal,” Wahlberg said after DJ Sean Valentine made the official announcement. “It’s something we talked about when we were kids, ‘One day when we’re old and retired, we’ll go there.’ Well, we ain’t old, and we ain’t retiring, and we’re here.”
A Residency to Take Things "Next Level"
Donnie Wahlberg, often described as the "captain" of the group, spoke excitedly about the residency and what it will mean for their live performances. In an official release, Wahlberg said, “We cherish every opportunity that we get to perform for our fans, but a Las Vegas residency gives us an opportunity to take our performance, and interaction with our fans, to the next level.”
He went on to explain that the state-of-the-art Dolby Live at Park MGM offers endless possibilities for production quality, allowing them to create what they hope will be the most memorable NKOTB concerts ever. The theater’s advanced sound system, immersive visuals, and intimate setting will enhance every aspect of the show, giving fans a high-quality experience that can only be delivered in a residency setting.
Wahlberg also added, “Las Vegas will never be the same after the New Kids and the Blockheads take over the town.”
Following in the Footsteps of Superstar Residencies
New Kids on the Block will be joining a prestigious lineup of artists who have performed residencies at Dolby Live, including current headliners like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Both artists have enjoyed huge success in the venue, and NKOTB is poised to bring their signature energy to the Strip, contributing to the city's reputation as a premier destination for live entertainment.
Though the residency is the first of its kind for the group, it comes on the heels of their successful “Magic Summer 2024” tour, which sold out venues across the U.S. and reaffirmed NKOTB's lasting popularity. The tour was their first in a decade and followed the release of their latest album, Still Kids, which dropped earlier this year. The residency gives the band an opportunity to build on that momentum and provide fans with an unforgettable experience.
The Band's History with Las Vegas
NKOTB has a long history with Las Vegas, having performed in the city multiple times throughout their career. Their most recent stop was in July 2014 during their “Block After Dark” tour at the then-Axis at Planet Hollywood. Prior to that, the band co-headlined with fellow boy band legends Backstreet Boys during the 2011 “NKOTBSB Tour.” That tour brought both groups to Mandalay Bay Events Center for a co-headlining show that was one of the summer’s hottest tickets.
However, unlike previous tours, this residency offers the group a chance to settle into Las Vegas and experiment with a more tailored, immersive performance. Jonathan Knight, the group’s eldest member, expressed his excitement about not having to travel from city to city during the residency.
“What we can do in this theater is really cool, because we can really set up shop and get creative,” Knight said during the fan event. “That’s what’s really getting me excited … I’m very excited about not getting on a bus and having to travel. We can just stay the hell in one place!”
A New Chapter for NKOTB Fans
For Blockheads, the residency offers an unparalleled opportunity to see the group perform in an intimate and immersive setting. Dolby Live at Park MGM’s advanced technological capabilities mean that each show will be a unique and unforgettable experience, combining nostalgia with cutting-edge production.
With a 16-show run, fans from around the world will have multiple chances to witness the group live and potentially even attend more than one show. For many, the residency marks the next chapter in their long-running fandom of New Kids on the Block, a group that has successfully maintained relevance in the ever-changing world of music.
Looking Ahead
As tickets go on sale this Friday, the anticipation for NKOTB's Las Vegas residency is sure to build. The residency marks both a personal and professional milestone for the group, offering them a chance to reflect on their 40-year journey while continuing to evolve as performers.
With sold-out tours, new music, and now their first-ever residency, New Kids on the Block have proven they’re far from "retiring." Instead, they're ready to once again take the stage and, as Wahlberg promised, take things "next level" for their fans.
❎ Nevada Voters to Decide on 7 Key Ballot Questions in 2024 Election
Nevada voters will face seven significant ballot questions in the upcoming November 5, 2024 election. These questions range from changes to election systems to tax exemptions and constitutional amendments. Here's a rundown of the questions, what they propose, and key arguments from supporters and opponents:
Question 1: Nevada Board of Regents
What it would do: Remove the constitutional status of the Nevada Board of Regents, granting legislative oversight through audits of the universities.
Supporters say: This would provide much-needed accountability for a board that has struggled with leadership and effectiveness.
Opponents say: Removing constitutional status won’t fix issues in higher education, and term limits have already been enacted to address the problems.
Question 2: Updating Disability-Related Language
What it would do: Replace outdated terms like "insane" and "deaf and dumb" in the Nevada Constitution with modern, respectful language.
Supporters say: It’s necessary to update offensive and outdated language to reflect modern standards and care for people with disabilities.
Opponents say: Constitutional changes should be rare, and this update would have no tangible impact on institutions supported by the state.
Question 3: Ranked Choice Voting and Open Primaries
What it would do: Replace the closed-primary system with nonpartisan open primaries, followed by ranked-choice voting in general elections.
Supporters say: It would give nonpartisan voters more participation and promote more moderate candidates.
Opponents say: The system could cause confusion and higher costs, with both major political parties opposing it.
Question 4: Removing Slavery Language in Criminal Punishment
What it would do: Remove language allowing slavery and involuntary servitude as a form of criminal punishment from the Nevada Constitution.
Supporters say: The language is outdated and offensive; slavery should not exist in any form.
Opponents say: It could lead to unintended consequences for prison work requirements and community service programs.
Question 5: Diaper Tax Exemption
What it would do: Exempt child and adult diapers from state sales tax.
Supporters say: This would provide financial relief to families, who spend hundreds on sales tax annually for essential items like diapers.
Opponents say: It would reduce tax revenues by an estimated $400 million by 2050, affecting state and local budgets.
Question 6: Codifying Abortion Rights
What it would do: Place Nevada’s existing abortion rights, including the right to abortion within 24 weeks, into the state constitution.
Supporters say: Codifying these protections adds a permanent layer of security for reproductive rights.
Opponents say: Current state laws already protect abortion, and constitutional changes could create uncertainties, especially involving minors.
Question 7: Voter ID Requirements
What it would do: Require in-person voters to show ID and mail-in voters to verify their identity with part of their driver’s license or Social Security number.
Supporters say: It enhances election security, ensuring the integrity of the vote.
Opponents say: Nevada's elections are already secure, and this would disenfranchise voters who lack access to IDs, despite voter fraud being rare.
These ballot measures present an opportunity for Nevada voters to weigh in on key changes to state laws, and the outcomes could have long-lasting effects on governance, taxes, and individual rights.
