šŸ’² The Hidden History of Paradise: How Las Vegasā€™ Strip Avoided City Taxes

Paradise, Nevada, is an unincorporated township that holds a special place in Las Vegas' history and geography. Despite its proximity to the city, much of the Las Vegas Strip, along with landmarks like UNLVā€™s campus and Harry Reid International Airport, are not technically within Las Vegas city limits but lie within Paradise, part of Clark County. The township spans from Sahara Avenue in the north, to Cactus Avenue in the south, and from Decatur Boulevard on the west, to Nellis Boulevard in the east. As of 2022, Paradise has a population of approximately 189,499, with numbers having declined slightly in recent years.

The origins of Paradise date back to the 1950s. During this time, many of the major casinos were constructed just outside Las Vegas city limits to avoid the cityā€™s taxes and fees. According to Michael Green, UNLV professor and chair of the history department, the city of Las Vegas attempted to annex the Strip to capture revenue from the booming casino industry. However, casino operators, keen to avoid additional municipal costs, backed legislation that created unincorporated townships like Paradise, Winchester, and Spring Valley. This strategic move allowed the casinos to flourish under Clark County jurisdiction, sidestepping Las Vegas city taxes.

Paradise was initially divided into two districts, Paradise A and Paradise B, due to regulations aligning township borders with school district boundaries, according to UNLV history professor Eugene Moehring. Despite opportunities to become part of Las Vegas, Paradise has remained an unincorporated township.

The name "Paradise" itself dates back even further. Maps from the early 20th century referred to the southern part of the Las Vegas Valley as "Paradise Valley" because of the areaā€™s fertile soil and lush vegetation, ideal for farming. A key geographical feature of the area, the Paradise Dunes, covered around 10 square miles and included what is now Sunset Park, preserving a small part of those iconic dunes.

The story of Paradise is intertwined with Las Vegas' growth and the flourishing of the Strip, offering a fascinating look at how geography, politics, and business shaped the evolution of the region into what it is today.

šŸˆ Raiders Routed by Panthers 36-22, Struggles Continue in Disappointing Home Opener

The Las Vegas Raiders entered their home opener at Allegiant Stadium with high hopes after a thrilling road win over the Baltimore Ravens, but those hopes were quickly dashed in a 36-22 loss to the struggling Carolina Panthers. Despite the energy of a packed stadium, the Raiders' performance fell short across all phases of the game, leading to boos from the crowd and harsh criticism from head coach Antonio Pierce.

A Momentum Shift Gone Wrong

Coming off a dramatic 26-23 victory against the Ravens, where the Raiders overcame a 10-point deficit, there was optimism that the win could be the start of something special. The team and its fans believed they had turned a corner. However, the reality of the NFLā€™s unpredictable nature struck hard when the Raiders faced a Panthers team that was widely regarded as one of the worst in the league through the first two weeks of the season.

From the opening whistle, the Raiders failed to match the intensity they showed in Baltimore. They were sluggish on both offense and defense, falling behind early and never finding a way to recover. The Panthers, led by veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, took full advantage of the Raidersā€™ shortcomings, quickly jumping out to a 21-7 halftime lead. Dalton, starting in place of benched rookie quarterback Bryce Young, put on a masterclass, completing 26 of 37 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns in his first start of the season.

The Raiders' defense struggled mightily against both the pass and the run, allowing the Panthers to gain 131 yards on the ground, making it the third consecutive game in which they had given up over 100 rushing yards. The run defenseā€™s inability to stop the Panthers further widened the gap, putting the Raiders in a hole they couldnā€™t climb out of.

Pierce Questions Effort

Head coach Antonio Pierce, in his first full season with the team, was visibly frustrated on the sidelines throughout the game. After the final whistle, he didnā€™t hold back his criticism of the teamā€™s effort. "I would have booed us too," Pierce said bluntly, acknowledging the fanbaseā€™s frustration.

In a post-game press conference, Pierce suggested that some players were not giving full effort, saying, "I think there were definitely some individuals that made business decisions." His remarks alluded to players potentially prioritizing self-preservation over maximum effort, a worrying sign for a team hoping to establish a winning identity. Pierce made it clear that such lackluster performances would not be tolerated moving forward, warning, "Weā€™ll make business decisions going forward as well."

The loss dropped the Raiders to 1-2 on the season, a disappointing start for a team that had been eager to prove doubters wrong. Instead of building on the Ravensā€™ win, the Raiders fed into the skepticism that has surrounded the team since the offseason.

Locker Room Accountability

The mood in the Raiders' locker room after the game was described as somber. Players were aware of the magnitude of their failure in front of a supportive home crowd. Kolton Miller, the teamā€™s left tackle, expressed disappointment in how they performed after such a strong showing the previous week. "I thought we would build off last week, obviously," Miller said.

Defensive star Maxx Crosby echoed Millerā€™s sentiments, calling for players to take a hard look at themselves. "A lot of people have to look in the mirror," he said, emphasizing the need for personal accountability across the roster.

While some players, like Crosby and Miller, called for change, others were visibly baffled by the teamā€™s inconsistency. Wide receiver Davante Adams, one of the most experienced and successful players on the roster, expressed his frustration with the teamā€™s inability to put together consistent performances. "Itā€™s got to become a part of your identity. Itā€™s got to be about who you show us every day," Adams said, adding that the Raiders havenā€™t established a winning identity yet.

Adams, who spent eight years with the Green Bay Packers, a perennial playoff contender, knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level and sees a stark contrast with his current team. "Itā€™s not like a, ā€˜Oh, letā€™s come out here and play hard one day.ā€™ Itā€™s more about whatā€™s the play style that you have as a team? And we havenā€™t established that as a team, on either side of the ball, in any phase," Adams explained.

Adamsā€™ comments highlight a fundamental issue facing the Raiders: they have yet to create a consistent, cohesive team identity. Without that, the talented roster will continue to struggle, as seen in their up-and-down performances early this season.

Dalton Shines, Minshew Struggles

On the other side of the field, Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton played like a man with something to prove. Starting in place of the benched Bryce Young, Daltonā€™s experience showed as he carved up the Raiders' defense. He spread the ball effectively to a variety of receivers, throwing touchdown passes to Adam Thielen and DJ Chark. Daltonā€™s control of the game allowed the Panthers to dominate time of possession and put consistent pressure on the Raiders.

In contrast, the Raidersā€™ quarterback situation wasnā€™t as successful. Gardner Minshew, starting his second game for Las Vegas, struggled to find a rhythm. He completed 18 of 28 passes for 215 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. Although he connected on a 54-yard deep pass to rookie wide receiver Tre Tucker in the first quarter, the Raiders' offense lacked flow for much of the game. Their running game was non-existent, gaining just 55 yards on 16 carries.

Minshew was eventually replaced late in the fourth quarter by second-year quarterback Aidan Oā€™Connell. Oā€™Connellā€™s appearance didnā€™t make much of a difference, though he did lead a late drive that ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tucker with just 56 seconds remaining. However, the score came far too late to change the outcome of the game.

Looking Forward: Raiders at a Crossroads

The Raidersā€™ inconsistency has left them at a crossroads just three games into the season. Theyā€™ve shown flashes of potential, as seen in their comeback win against the Ravens, but performances like Sundayā€™s blowout loss to the Panthers raise significant concerns.

Coach Antonio Pierce hinted at changes moving forward, with a more disciplined and rigorous approach to coaching. "Obviously, weā€™re gonna have to coach them better and be some hard asses on the guys, and guys are gonna have to take rough coaching," Pierce said. He also acknowledged that he didnā€™t see the poor performance coming, adding to the frustration of the teamā€™s up-and-down start.

The Raiders have little time to regroup, as they prepare for their next challenge. Their ability to bounce back will depend on whether the team can address its weaknessesā€”especially on defense and in the running gameā€”and develop a consistent identity on both sides of the ball.

For a team that entered the season determined to prove itself, the loss to the Panthers serves as a sobering reminder of how much work still needs to be done. The road ahead will be tough, and the Raiders will need to find answers quickly if they hope to turn things around before the season slips away.

šŸŽ¶ Eagles Launch Third Encore Experience at The Venetian, Honoring 50-Year Legacy

The Eagles have launched a unique fan experience called Third Encore at The Venetian in Las Vegas, offering something far beyond a typical pop-up shop. Curated by Cindy Frey, widow of Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey and mother of current band member Deacon Frey, the exhibit is a tribute to the bandā€™s 50-year legacy. Cindy Frey made it clear that this isn't just a standard merchandise store, saying, "This is more of an experience... we're not just throwing up T-shirts and saying, ā€˜OK, come in!ā€™ This is as real as the band.ā€

The attraction is named Third Encore in honor of the encores Eagles fans have come to expect during the band's residency at The Sphere. Set on the second floor of The Venetianā€™s Waterfall Atrium, the display is filled with memorabilia that spans the band's five decades. Fans can visit for free on show weeks from Thursday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

A Rock History Experience

One of the most notable pieces is Don Henleyā€™s first-ever drum set, gifted by his mother in 1964, with the drum face still reading Felicity, the name of his high school band. Cindy Frey found the set in storage and decided to include it, saying, ā€œFans will absolutely love it.ā€

The space also features old concert posters, music equipment, and a video presentation titled Eagles Come Home, which showcases behind-the-scenes footage. Cindy Freyā€™s personal contributions include rare photos she discovered, like one from the Eaglesā€™ 1975 ā€œMid-Summer Musicā€ festival at the old Wembley Stadium, where they shared the stage with the Beach Boys and Joe Walsh before he joined the Eagles.

The Troubadour Connection

At the heart of the Third Encore is a recreated VIP version of the legendary Troubadour Lounge, the iconic West Hollywood club where Glenn Frey and Don Henley first met in 1970. The lounge, designed to resemble its 1970s aesthetic, will serve as a hub for fans who opt for the Vibee VIP package. These packages offer exclusive access to rare memorabilia and themed drinks inspired by the band, creating an immersive experience for fans willing to splurge.

Unique Merchandise

In addition to the historical displays, Third Encore offers 2,600 square feet of exclusive merchandise. The store features redesigned versions of vintage items like old T-shirts and satin jackets from the bandā€™s early days. ā€œPeople look at them like, ā€˜Wow, this is amazing. I want to wear that today,ā€™ā€ Cindy Frey noted, underscoring the timeless appeal of the Eagles' style.

Third Encore provides fans with a deep dive into the bandā€™s rich history and offers a space to celebrate their music and legacy in a meaningful way. For Cindy Frey and the rest of the Eagles' family, it was important to create an authentic experience, ensuring that the attraction reflects the same passion and authenticity that has sustained the band for five decades.

āŽ Vice President Harris to Make Eighth Campaign Stop in Nevada Ahead of Election Day

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to make another stop in Nevada as part of her re-election campaign efforts, with Election Day quickly approaching. While the exact date and location of the visit have not yet been disclosed, a campaign source confirmed the trip on Monday morning. This upcoming visit will mark Harris' eighth time campaigning in Nevada, a key battleground state in the upcoming election.

Nevada holds significant importance in national elections due to its swing state status, and both parties have been actively vying for its voters. The stateā€™s diverse electorate, which includes large Latino, Black, and Asian-American populations, makes it a critical stop for candidates looking to secure crucial electoral votes. Nevada is also seen as a bellwether for broader national trends, particularly in issues like immigration, healthcare, and economic recovery, all of which are expected to play major roles in the 2024 election.

During her last visit to Nevada, Harris appeared alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, her running mate in the re-election bid, marking their first joint appearance. The visit highlighted the Democratic campaign's focus on energizing key voter blocs and addressing local concerns. Harris has been a prominent figure in the Biden administrationā€™s outreach efforts, often emphasizing the administration's legislative achievements in healthcare, infrastructure, and economic recovery as points of contrast to the opposition.

The importance of Nevada has also been underscored by Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump, who held a rally earlier this month in downtown Las Vegas. Trump's visit was part of his ongoing effort to rally support among his base and make inroads with independent voters in the state.

As both parties ramp up their efforts to secure votes in the final weeks of the campaign, Nevada will continue to be a hotbed of political activity. With key issues like inflation, unemployment, and immigration shaping the political landscape, candidates will aim to connect with Nevadaā€™s voters, knowing the state could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
