🏫 Over 90 CCSD Schools Report HVAC Problems as District Struggles with Repairs

Air conditioning problems have once again become a major issue in the Clark County School District (CCSD), as complaints from students and staff across multiple schools have surfaced. FOX5 has been investigating these concerns, which highlight ongoing HVAC malfunctions in schools throughout the district.

The issue was a key focus during the latest CCSD Bond Oversight Committee meeting held on Tuesday, where committee members indicated that the problem might be more widespread than previously thought. Committee member Abraham Camejo voiced serious concerns about the scale of the issue, stating, "As of right now, I’ve heard there’s about 91 schools that have issues with air conditioners going on right now."

Camejo emphasized the urgency of addressing HVAC problems as the transition from summer to fall begins, noting that if the air conditioning units aren’t working properly, it could also lead to heating issues in the colder months. "If the air conditioner’s not working, that means the heater’s not going to be working in the next two weeks,” he said, stressing the potential impact on students and staff as winter approaches.

Widespread Issues and Delays in Reporting

The Bond Oversight Committee has requested a comprehensive report on the number of schools affected by HVAC issues. The committee initially hoped to receive the report this month, but CCSD officials stated it likely won’t be ready until next month, delaying potential solutions to the problem. This is particularly concerning given the scale of the reported issues and the potential impact on the district’s nearly 300,000 students.

Over the past month, FOX5 has received numerous complaints from students, teachers, and staff across various CCSD schools. Some of the schools identified include Chaparral High School and Bob Miller Middle School. While CCSD has confirmed air conditioning issues at Chaparral, it has not provided details about other schools facing similar problems.

Parents, students, and staff have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and delayed responses from the district regarding the scope of the HVAC issues. Despite repeated inquiries, CCSD has declined to provide additional information about schools affected by temperature levels exceeding 85 degrees in classrooms, which could create uncomfortable and potentially unsafe learning environments.

Future Plans and Financial Challenges

As the district works to gather information on the HVAC malfunctions, the Bond Oversight Committee is planning to revisit the topic in its October meeting. During this session, the committee aims to determine how many HVAC units need repair or replacement and assess the associated costs. However, the district’s financial struggles could complicate efforts to resolve the issue quickly.

CCSD is currently facing significant budget challenges. The district recently announced the departure of its Chief Financial Officer, who said he was fired amid budget controversies. These financial difficulties are already affecting other aspects of school operations, with some schools cutting back on resources to manage costs. For instance, Barber Elementary School informed parents that second graders will no longer receive homework packets for the remainder of the year due to budget constraints tied to the rising cost of ink and paper.

The Path Forward

The HVAC issues come at a time when the district is already grappling with operational challenges related to budget shortfalls. The combination of financial instability and infrastructure problems has put a strain on CCSD’s ability to provide a comfortable and effective learning environment. The district’s ability to secure the necessary funds for widespread HVAC repairs remains unclear, especially given its existing budgetary woes.

In response to growing concerns, FOX5 has filed public records requests seeking a list of schools experiencing air conditioning issues, as well as records of classroom temperature readings above 85 degrees. These requests are still pending, and FOX5 continues to push the district for answers.

As CCSD students and staff await much-needed HVAC repairs, the upcoming winter season could bring further complications if heating systems fail to function properly in schools already grappling with malfunctioning air conditioners. For now, all eyes are on the October Bond Oversight Committee meeting, where more concrete details on repair timelines and costs are expected to emerge.

🏀 Aces Set for WNBA Semifinals Clash with Liberty After Sweeping Storm in First Round

It might seem inconceivable to consider Chelsea Gray, a WNBA Finals MVP just two years ago, an X-factor in the playoffs, but this version of Gray might be exactly what the Las Vegas Aces need as they chase a historic three-peat. The star point guard played a key role in the Aces' 83-76 win over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, helping them complete a two-game sweep in the first round of the WNBA playoffs at Michelob Ultra Arena.

Gray had 12 points and nine assists, contributing to the Aces’ 16-point lead in the first quarter. Despite shooting just 4-for-13 and cooling off as the game progressed, Gray’s playmaking and leadership were instrumental, especially in setting up Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson to take over. Plum tied her career playoff-high with 29 points, while Wilson recorded 24 points and 13 rebounds, guiding the Aces into their sixth straight semifinals appearance. The victory also sets up a much-anticipated WNBA Finals rematch with the New York Liberty, with Game 1 scheduled for Sunday at Barclays Center.

Gray’s Impact Beyond the Numbers

Although Gray’s shooting cooled after a hot start, with her missing 8 of her last 9 shots, her influence extended far beyond the stat sheet. Gray’s ability to make big plays shone late in the game. With just over two minutes left, she hit a critical pull-up jumper, giving the Aces an 80-72 lead, a basket that effectively sealed the win.

“She’s a big-shot player, a big playmaker,” Plum said of Gray. “We had this narrative of, ‘Oh, she’s starting to get her form back.’ She’s in her form.”

Gray missed the first 12 games of the regular season due to a foot injury she sustained during last year’s Finals, and her return to full form has been gradual. She struggled with shooting consistency in her first two months back, but over the final stretch of the regular season, she began to look like the player who led the Aces to the title. In the final eight games, she shot 45 percent, signaling her readiness to be a difference-maker in the playoffs.

As Plum explained, Gray’s value transcends her shooting percentages. “Ask any player in the league, I guarantee you they want Chelsea Gray on their team with five minutes left, tie game. They would pick her every time,” she said.

Defensive Playmaking

While Gray’s offensive contributions were important, coach Becky Hammon praised her for her defensive prowess in Game 2. Whether guarding Seattle’s Mercedes Russell or switching onto forwards like Nneka Ogwumike, Gray’s quick hands and defensive reads proved pivotal in key moments.

“She plays bigger than she is,” Hammon said. “She has some of the greatest hands defensively, just getting active, poking the ball. We can have her in a free safety mode and she can just make plays.”

Gray’s all-around game, especially her ability to disrupt opponents defensively, will be crucial as the Aces prepare for a tough series against the top-seeded Liberty, a team that swept the Aces 3-0 in the regular season.

Team Momentum

The Aces, despite Gray’s early-season absence, have found their stride, losing just one game in their last 12 contests dating back to August 30. That one loss came to the Liberty, but the Aces were missing Wilson due to an ankle injury. With a fully healthy squad, including a rejuvenated Gray, the Aces are primed to avenge their regular-season losses and make another run at the championship.

Gray’s recovery from injury and return to form is just one of many reasons the Aces feel confident heading into the semifinal showdown against New York.

“We’re blessed to have her. We really are,” Wilson said of Gray, acknowledging her teammate’s impact on both ends of the court.

Three Key Takeaways from the Win:

  1. Plum’s Bounce Back
After struggling in Game 1, where she went 1-for-8 from the floor, Kelsey Plum bounced back in Game 2 with a dominant 29-point performance, shooting 11-for-15. Plum credited a reset at a sushi bar as part of her mental recovery, saying she needed to "throw Game 1 out the window."

  2. Ball Don’t Lie
With 2:21 remaining, the Aces led 78-72 when Tiffany Hayes was called for a loose-ball foul on Seattle’s Ezi Magbegor. Hammon’s challenge was unsuccessful, but Magbegor missed both ensuing free throws, and Gray followed up with a clutch jumper to extend the Aces' lead.

  3. ‘Best Team All Year’
The Aces acknowledge the challenge ahead as they face the Liberty, who have been dominant all season and claimed the No. 1 seed. “They’ve been the best team all year,” Hammon said. The Liberty swept the Aces in the regular season, and Plum acknowledged New York’s improvement, saying, “There’s no secret they’ve taken care of business, and that’s why they have the one seed.”

With Gray looking close to her peak and the Aces hitting their stride at the right time, the upcoming semifinal series promises to be a battle between two WNBA powerhouses.

😋 Big B’s BBQ Aims for Year-End Opening of New Sahara Boulevard Location

Big B's Texas BBQ, a beloved barbecue joint known for its authentic Texas-style brisket, is still working on opening its new location on West Sahara Boulevard after unexpected delays. In May, owners Natalia Badzjo and Brian Buechner announced they were closing their South Fort Apache Road shop, with plans to move into a larger space on Sahara by September. However, delays related to building permits and construction have pushed the opening back.

“The original plan was to open in September, but we got some unexpected delays with building permits and construction, which put us a bit behind,” Natalia Badzjo explained. She noted that the team is now aiming to open by the end of the year. The restaurant has received "hundreds of calls and emails asking for an update" from eager customers, highlighting the loyal following the brand has built over the years.

The new location at 8125 W. Sahara Blvd., near South Cimarron Road, will be significantly larger than the previous Fort Apache location. At 5,500 square feet, the new space will feature an open floor plan and a full bar, making it more accommodating for both dine-in customers and events. The site also offers a large parking lot, enhancing accessibility for patrons.

Big B’s Texas BBQ first opened its doors in Henderson in 2016 and quickly gained a reputation for its smoked meats, particularly the brisket. The restaurant goes to great lengths to maintain authenticity, even purchasing mesquite wood from south Texas, where Buechner is originally from, to achieve the distinct flavor and smoke profile that fans have come to love.

While customers await the opening of the new location, they can still visit Big B’s original Henderson spot, which remains open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For updates on the new location’s progress, patrons are encouraged to visit the restaurant’s website at bigbztexasbbq.com or follow them on social media at @bigbzbbq.

🎰 Aristocrat Blocks Light & Wonder's Dragon Train Game in Ongoing Legal Battle

Aristocrat Technologies Inc., a leading slot machine manufacturer, scored a significant legal victory in its ongoing lawsuit against Las Vegas-based competitor Light & Wonder (L&W). On Friday, U.S. District Court of Nevada Judge Gloria Navarro granted Aristocrat a preliminary injunction, blocking L&W from selling or commercializing its “Dragon Train” game, which Aristocrat claims is a copycat of its popular "Dragon Link" and "Lightning Link" games.

The court ruling found that Aristocrat is "extremely likely to succeed" in proving that L&W misappropriated trade secrets and infringed on intellectual property developed for Aristocrat’s highly successful casino games. Aristocrat, an Australian-based company, had accused L&W of using proprietary knowledge from two former Aristocrat developers who joined L&W in 2021. According to the complaint, these employees helped L&W create competing games like Jewel of the Dragon and Dragon Train, using trade secrets and designs from Aristocrat’s iconic game franchises.

In response to the ruling, Aristocrat’s Chief Product Officer, Matthew Primmer, praised the decision, emphasizing that it underscores the value of the company’s intellectual property. “We will continue to innovate and invest in cutting-edge solutions, knowing that the law protects our creative efforts,” Primmer stated.

On the other hand, L&W, which plans to appeal the decision, expressed disappointment with the ruling. The company reiterated its belief that Aristocrat’s claims lack merit and vowed to continue defending itself vigorously. L&W has accused Aristocrat of using legal tactics to undermine its product releases, arguing that Aristocrat’s lawsuits in multiple jurisdictions aim to damage its product rollouts.

The case, filed in February 2023, includes claims of trade secret misappropriation, copyright infringement, trade dress infringement, and deceptive trade practices. Aristocrat is seeking damages and legal remedies for what it views as L&W’s unfair competitive advantage.

Beyond the U.S., Aristocrat has pursued legal action in Australia, where the Federal Court of Australia has granted Aristocrat pre-suit discovery against L&W. Aristocrat has said it will explore all legal avenues to protect its intellectual property on a global scale.

L&W, a publicly traded company, remains confident in its ability to move forward. CEO Matt Wilson emphasized the company’s strong portfolio and future growth. “We have the best game design talent in the industry, and they are creating great games across all our channels,” Wilson said, while also noting that L&W has already started developing new versions of the Dragon Train game, compliant with the court's ruling.

As the legal battle continues, the case highlights the intense competition in the gaming industry, where intellectual property is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge.
