🌀 Hurricane Helene Devastates Southeast: Death Toll Surpasses 130 as Rescue Efforts Continue

Widespread devastation from Hurricane Helene became evident Monday across the southern U.S., leaving behind a trail of splintered homes, crushed vehicles, and flooded highways in one of the worst storms in U.S. history. The death toll surpassed 130, with ongoing efforts to locate hundreds of missing people.

The disaster hit western North Carolina particularly hard, where washed-out roads and lack of power or communication left residents stranded and desperate for resources. Emergency workers and volunteers scrambled to deliver aid to the affected areas.

At least 133 people in six Southeastern states have died due to the storm, which wreaked havoc from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia. Federal officials estimate that around 600 people remain unaccounted for as search and rescue teams struggle to reach isolated communities.

President Joe Biden plans to visit Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday to survey the damage and meet with local officials. Government agencies and aid organizations are working around the clock to deliver supplies to Asheville and nearby towns, which have been cut off from basic services.

Widespread Damage in North Carolina

The storm's destruction in North Carolina is staggering. A cargo container was left perched on a bridge over a swollen river, while debris, including boats and tree trunks, floated in Lake Lure. In Asheville, people gathered on hillsides to find cellular service, sending messages to loved ones to let them know they were safe.

Dozens of tragic stories have emerged, including a courthouse officer who drowned in his truck and a family of three who died when their home collapsed in floodwaters. Despite the devastation, rescuers saved many, including an infant stranded on a car roof in Atlanta and more than 50 patients and staff rescued from a Tennessee hospital by helicopter.

Several major routes into Asheville were washed away, leaving the city’s water system severely damaged. Residents have been forced to rely on creek water for basic needs. Community members have banded together to share food and resources, with some even preparing neighborhood meals before food supplies spoil.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Officials have warned that rebuilding will take years. Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane and tore through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said more than 1,000 people are in shelters across the Southeast.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who toured the Asheville area by helicopter, called the storm "unprecedented" and said it would require an equally historic response.

Search teams have spread across the region, using helicopters and mules to reach areas cut off by landslides and flooding. Volunteers are also pitching in, with some, like Mike Toberer, using mules to deliver essential supplies to remote mountain areas.

Challenges in the Mountains

Western North Carolina was hit especially hard due to the region’s mountainous terrain, which caused torrential rains as Helene’s remnants encountered cooler air. Many towns in the region, built in valleys, were particularly vulnerable to flooding. Asheville faced the worst flooding in a century, with some areas seeing more than two feet of rain since Wednesday.

FEMA has deployed ten search and rescue teams, with nine more on the way, to help find stranded residents. The situation is being exacerbated by climate change, which scientists say is contributing to the intensity and frequency of storms like Helene.

Destruction Across the Southeast

The devastation extended beyond North Carolina. In Florida, several feet of water swamped the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, damaging vital equipment. In Georgia, entire neighborhoods in Augusta remained without power days after the storm, and in South Carolina, Helene claimed 30 lives, making it the state’s deadliest storm since Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kirk formed in the Atlantic and is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by midweek, though it is not currently projected to threaten land.

A Long Road to Recovery

With widespread damage from Florida to Virginia, officials warn that the recovery process will be long and challenging. The full extent of the devastation is still emerging as rescue workers continue to reach isolated areas, and communities are left to pick up the pieces from this historic storm.

🏀 Aces Face Must-Win Game 2 After Semifinals Loss to Liberty

Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon said her team was "trying to dig out of a hole" during their 87-77 loss to the New York Liberty in Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals at Barclays Center on Sunday. Now, the defending champions face a crucial Game 2 on Wednesday, as falling into a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-five series could severely hinder their hopes of winning a third consecutive title.

Historically, teams that trail 2-0 in WNBA best-of-five semifinals or finals have never advanced. Since the format was introduced in 2016 for the semifinals and in 2005 for the finals, no team has successfully completed a comeback from such a deficit.

“It’s do or die. We have to win Game 2,” Hammon said after the Game 1 loss. “I don’t think there’s any other way around it.”

Only one team, the Phoenix Mercury, has forced a Game 5 after trailing 2-0. In the 2018 semifinals, the Mercury made a 17-point comeback to win Game 4 against the Seattle Storm but ultimately lost the series in Game 5. Liberty star Breanna Stewart and Aces reserve forward Alysha Clark were part of that 2018 Seattle team, and Stewart’s 34 points on Sunday, including 20 in the first half, were instrumental in the Liberty’s hot start.

Familiar Territory for the Aces

While the stakes are high, the Aces have experience coming back from a 1-0 deficit. In 2022, they lost Game 1 of the semifinals to the Seattle Storm at home but rallied to win the next three games en route to their first-ever championship. Coach Hammon and guard Kelsey Plum, who led the Aces in scoring on Sunday, remember that uphill battle vividly.

“We’ve had our backs against the wall before,” Hammon said, recalling how Stewart scored 42 points in Game 4 of that series, yet the Aces still managed a 97-92 victory to close out the series.

Plum also reflected on her matchup with then-Seattle point guard Sue Bird, who had 12 assists and no turnovers in Game 1 of that 2022 series. Bird, now retired, watched courtside with American soccer star Megan Rapinoe as the Aces struggled through another Game 1 loss on Sunday.

“We don’t remember it at all,” Hammon joked, recalling their 2022 series comeback. “None of us remember that trauma.”

Plum, however, quietly added, "I do."

Must-Win Game 2

As the Aces prepare for Game 2 on Wednesday, they know a win is crucial to avoid the steep odds of a 2-0 deficit. With the Liberty seeking redemption from their 2023 Finals loss to Las Vegas, the Aces must regain control to keep their three-peat hopes alive.

Las Vegas Travelers Beware: These Airlines Are Most Likely to Bump Passengers

Getting "bumped" from a flight can be one of the most frustrating experiences for travelers. You’ve secured your ticket, made hotel reservations, planned to meet friends and family, but suddenly, you’re informed that the flight is oversold, and you’re not getting on the plane.

While the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) doesn’t track which airports are most likely to experience involuntary boarding denials, it does keep tabs on which airlines are most likely to bump passengers. According to recent data, only five of the top 10 airlines that oversell flights fly to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QRFY, a software company based in Barcelona, analyzed DOT data to determine which airlines are most prone to denying passengers boarding—either voluntarily or involuntarily. Porcar explained that many airlines in the U.S. oversell seats to maximize profits, expecting that not all booked passengers will show up. While this strategy helps keep planes full and fares low, it often leads to unexpected bumps for travelers.

QRFY researchers gathered data from January 2023 to March 2024 and calculated how often airlines denied passengers boarding per 10,000 enplaned. Here are the top five offenders that operate out of Las Vegas:

  1. Frontier Airlines (No. 3 nationwide)
Frontier denies boarding to 6.47 passengers per 10,000. In total, 23,044 people were denied boarding during the period analyzed, with 11,238 of them bumped involuntarily—the highest of any airline in the report.

  2. Spirit Airlines (No. 4)
Spirit bumps 6.41 passengers per 10,000, amounting to 17,382 total denials, with 1,171 being involuntary. Spirit boarded over 27 million passengers in the analyzed period.

  3. Delta Air Lines (No. 5)
Delta is one of the largest airlines in the U.S. and recorded 6.32 denied boardings per 10,000 passengers. However, Delta's 115,827 denied boardings were all voluntary, meaning no one was bumped against their will.

  4. Alaska Airlines (No. 9)
Alaska Airlines denies boarding to 2.83 passengers per 10,000. Of the 11,563 passengers denied, only 231 were involuntarily bumped.

  5. Southwest Airlines (No. 10)
As the busiest carrier at Harry Reid International, Southwest denied 2.42 passengers per 10,000. In total, 50,951 passengers were bumped due to oversold flights, out of more than 210 million enplaned during the period.

Porcar noted that while being bumped can be frustrating, it’s part of a strategy airlines use to ensure full flights, which is more fuel-efficient and can lead to lower fares for passengers. Additionally, airlines often offer generous compensation to those who voluntarily give up their seats, which can include vouchers, cash incentives, and hotel stays, making it a potentially beneficial trade-off for flexible travelers.

On a brighter note for Las Vegas travelers, Allegiant Air, based in the city, was identified as the airline least likely to bump passengers.

As airlines continue to employ overselling practices, understanding which carriers are most likely to deny boarding can help travelers better plan their trips and avoid unwanted surprises at the gate.
