๐ŸŒž Las Vegas Braces for Continued Heat as Mid-October Forecast Predicts Above-Normal Temperatures

As Las Vegas continues to swelter under an extended excessive heat warning, more temperature records are being broken at Harry Reid International Airport. On Monday, the city hit 102 degrees, setting a new record for Sept. 30 and surpassing the previous high of 101 degrees recorded in 2015. This marked the third consecutive day of record-breaking heat, with Monday becoming the 106th day in 2024 where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higherโ€”another all-time high for the city.

The heatwave could continue to push boundaries, as Tuesdayโ€™s forecast predicts a high of 102 degrees, just one degree shy of the 103-degree record set on Oct. 1, 1978. National Weather Service meteorologist Jenn Varian said, โ€œWeโ€™re within a degree, so it will be close either way,โ€ indicating that the streak of record-breaking temperatures could persist.

In response to the extreme heat, cooling stations throughout the Las Vegas Valley will remain open to help residents cope with the dangerous conditions. The excessive heat warning is expected to last until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Looking ahead, the seven-day forecast predicts that temperatures will remain at or above 100 degrees through the weekend, with overnight lows in the mid-70s. The current heatwave is running 10-12 degrees above normal for early October, and this trend is expected to extend further into the month. Mid-October outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center suggest that above-normal temperatures will continue to affect the region.

In addition to the extreme heat, the area remains below its average annual rainfall. So far in 2024, the airport has received only 2.27 inches of rain, compared to the typical 3.11 inches expected by this time of year.

๐Ÿ€ Aces Must Win Game 3 to Stay Alive After Falling to Liberty in Semifinals

The Las Vegas Aces are on the brink of elimination from the WNBA playoffs for the first time since 2021 after losing Game 2 of their semifinal series against the New York Liberty, 88-84, on Tuesday at Barclays Center.

Despite the tough loss, coach Becky Hammon and point guard Chelsea Gray maintained some humor. After the game, Hammon joked about calling the series "do or die" before Game 2, saying, โ€œDid I say it was a must-win? I was lying. I was trying to bring the drama.โ€

The Aces now face a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-five series, with Game 3 set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Michelob Ultra Arena. No team in WNBA history has ever come back from being down 2-0 in a series. Chelsea Gray, however, embraced the challenge, saying, โ€œI love being in the history books. Might as well kind of start there.โ€

The Aces had their chances, leading by eight points in the first quarter and tying the game at 81 late in the fourth, but a crucial turnover on an inbound pass in the final seconds sealed their fate. Aโ€™ja Wilson led the team with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Sabrina Ionescu scored 24 for the Liberty, including 11 in the decisive fourth quarter.

Hammon stressed that despite the odds, the Aces are not giving up, saying, โ€œLet there be no doubt, weโ€™re in for a war.โ€

Key Moments and Challenges:

  • Kiah Stokes Injury: Stokes, a key defensive player, left the game in the third quarter after a collision with Liberty center Jonquel Jones and did not return. Alysha Clark stepped up with 13 points but the Liberty dominated the paint, outscoring the Aces 44-24 inside.

  • Defensive Struggles: Hammon criticized the team's defense, particularly the number of layups they allowed, calling it โ€œobscene.โ€ She called two quick timeouts in the second quarter after defensive lapses, visibly frustrated.

  • Turnovers Costly: Hammon pointed to turnovers as a key reason for the loss, with the Aces giving up 20 points off turnovers. โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s close if we didnโ€™t keep passing it to the other team,โ€ she said.

Now down 2-0, the Aces need a win in Game 3 to keep their hopes of a third consecutive WNBA title alive.

โœˆ Harry Reid Airport Unveils Multibillion-Dollar Expansion Plan to Boost Capacity by 2037

Officials at Harry Reid International Airport have unveiled plans for a multibillion-dollar expansion project, expected to take at least four years to complete. The expansion is designed to bridge the gap until a new supplemental airport south of Las Vegas opens in 2037. Key developments include expanding Terminal 1 from 39 to 65 gates, constructing two multimodal centers to improve airport access and parking, and redesigning roadways to enhance traffic flow between the two terminals.

The Clark County Commission received a 25-minute briefing on Tuesday from Clark County Aviation Director Rosemary Vassiliadis and her team, who outlined the ambitious project. The expansion of Terminal 1 will transition from a "satellite" design to a more efficient pier system, increasing gate capacity and streamlining operations.

Key details of the expansion:

  • Terminal Expansion: Terminal 1 will grow from 39 to 65 gates, using a linear pier design to replace the outdated satellite hub model. One of the new piers, with 11 additional gates, will be constructed on the vacant site where Terminal 2 once stood, allowing construction without disrupting current operations.

  • Multimodal Centers: Two new multimodal centers will enhance transportation options for passengers, ride-hailing services, and airport employees. These centers, one to the north near Tropicana Avenue and another to the south near I-215, will also expand public parking options.

  • Ground Transportation Improvements: New road designs will aim to separate traffic moving between the terminals from bypass lanes under the airport's runways. This will include a new flyover bridge and improved usage of an existing tunnel with a central bore.

  • Terminal Renaming: As part of the project, Terminal 3 will be renamed Terminal 2 to reduce passenger confusion.

Although the cost of the project has not yet been finalized, it is expected to exceed the $2.4 billion spent on the construction of Terminal 3 in 2012. The expansion will likely be funded through bonds supported by airport user fees, which include landing fees, parking, and other concessions.

Next steps include presenting the expansion plan to the consortium of airlines using Harry Reid International Airport for approval, with a review expected by December.

This expansion is part of a broader effort to meet increasing passenger demand and prepare for the anticipated opening of a second regional airport in 2037.

๐Ÿ• Celebrate National Pizza Month with These 9 New Spots in Las Vegas

October is National Pizza Month, a time when opinions on pizza run as hot as the ovens that bake them. Few foods stir as much passion and debate as pizza, with fans fiercely loyal to their favorite styles, ingredients, and places. Whether it's classic Neapolitan, deep-dish, or creative fusion pies, the conversation can get heated. But this month, instead of diving into the pizza wars, weโ€™re keeping things cool by simply highlighting some of the newest pizza spots in Las Vegas that have opened over the past year. No rankings or โ€œbest ofโ€ lists โ€” just a round-up of fresh faces in the pizza scene.

Here are nine places for pizza that have opened since October 2023, ranging from dedicated pizzerias to restaurants that offer pizza alongside other fare. Each brings something unique to the Las Vegas pizza landscape.

1. Bramร re

Opened in July by the team behind Table 34, this cozy spot offers Italian-inspired pizzas fired in a gas oven reaching 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Standout options include the Anacardi, topped with buffalo mozzarella, Calabrese sausage, olives, and cashews, and a beef cheek pizza with goat cheese and potato.

2. Ciao Vino Ristorante

Launching in early September, this new Italian restaurant boasts pies like the funghi with wild mushrooms, roasted garlic, and creamy stracciatella, or the spicy diavola featuring salumi and Calabrian chilis.

3. Curry Pizza House

This fast-casual chain opened its first Las Vegas location last November, combining Italian pizza traditions with Indian flavors. Try the curry chicken masala pizza or the palak paneer pie, topped with spinach, masala paneer, and fresh pesto.

4. Good Pie

Vincent Rotoloโ€™s popular downtown pizza joint has expanded with a new location in Henderson, offering signature styles like Grandma, Sicilian, Brooklyn, and Detroit, along with New York-style slices.

  • 835 Seven Hills Drive, Suites 140A and 140B, goodpie.com

5. Happy Camper

Located on the Strip, Happy Camper opened in February with an eclectic atmosphere featuring neon lights and a retractable roof. Their pizza dough is crispy outside and chewy inside, with toppings ranging from classic pepperoni to street corn and barbecue chicken.

6. Lexieโ€™s Bistro

This Italian-American eatery, which opened in May, features thick, chewy-crusted pizzas like the formaggi (a mix of mozzarella and Bel Paese) and the Sapori dโ€™Italia, loaded with prosciutto, capicola, and soppressata.

7. Miami Slice

Debuting in December at the new Fontainebleau, Miami Slice offers New York-style pies and slices, including creative options like the La Salsera, topped with a trio of sauces โ€” red, vodka, and pesto.

8. Mr. Moto Pizza

This San Diego transplant opened in April and is known for its thin crust and fluffy cornice. Try pizzas like the Mamma Moto, with garlic paste, burrata, and truffle oil, or the Rocky Mountains, topped with meatballs and spicy honey.

9. Prince Street Pizza

Known for its Neapolitan and Sicilian-style pies, Prince Street Pizza launched in Durango Casino in November. Donโ€™t miss their Fancy Prince, a Neapolitan pie with house sauce and Pecorino-Romano, or the Naughty Pie, a Sicilian creation with prosciutto vodka sauce and ricotta.
