🏨 Tropicana Las Vegas Set for Early Morning Implosion in Spectacular Farewell

Las Vegas is gearing up for a must-watch event as the iconic Tropicana casino-hotel prepares for a controlled implosion. The demolition of the two remaining hotel towers is scheduled for 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and will last around 22 seconds, preceded by a fireworks and drone show. However, for locals and tourists hoping to witness this historic moment, catching a glimpse may prove difficult.

No Public Viewing Areas

Due to safety concerns, there are no official public viewing spots for the implosion of the Tropicana, located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. A perimeter around the demolition site will be closed to the public, with restricted pedestrian access and road closures in place.

Best Viewing Spots

For those determined to see the implosion, nearby parking garages may offer the best vantage points. The roofs of New York New York and MGM Grand parking garages both provide clear views of the site, though MGM Resorts has not confirmed if access to these garages will be limited.

One of the prime locations, the Foundation Room on the 63rd floor of Mandalay Bay, is hosting a sold-out viewing party. Additionally, Ellis Island, an off-Strip casino-hotel, is holding a viewing party at its Front Yard, complete with Las Vegas trivia and karaoke leading up to the explosion.

Other Viewing Options

For Las Vegas locals, several parks on the west and northwest sides, such as those in Summerlin and Centennial Hills, may offer distant views of the Strip. However, distance and darkness could make it challenging to see the event clearly. Parks on the east and southeast sides also provide some vantage points.

For those preferring to watch from the comfort of home, the Las Vegas Review-Journal will livestream the event, and local TV news stations will provide live broadcasts.

A New Era for the Tropicana Site

The Tropicana, which first opened in 1957, is being demolished to make way for a new Major League Baseball stadium and resort. Bally’s Corp. and the Oakland Athletics have announced plans for a $1.5 billion baseball stadium on nine acres of the 35-acre site, with the possibility of a new hotel-resort coming later. The demolition is estimated to cost $1.2 million and will require about 2,100 pounds of explosives to bring down the Club Tower and Paradise Tower.

As Las Vegas says goodbye to one of its iconic Rat Pack-era casinos, this implosion marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter on the Strip.

🏒Golden Knights Fall 3-1 to Avalanche in Preseason Rematch

The Vegas Golden Knights couldn't replicate their previous win against the Colorado Avalanche, falling 3-1 in a preseason rematch at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday. Despite a power-play goal from Jack Eichel, the Knights struggled offensively, managing only one goal compared to their 6-1 victory two days earlier in Denver.

Slow Start and Missed Opportunities

In the second meeting between the teams, the Knights were slow out of the gate, not reaching 10 shots on goal until halfway through the second period. Ilya Samsonov, the Knights' new backup goaltender, made 24 saves, but the team struggled to keep up with Colorado's offense.

“We were trying to make plays that weren’t there against a good offensive team,” said coach Bruce Cassidy. “We got better as the game went on, but got ourselves in a hole where we couldn’t quite get there.”

Avalanche Capitalize Early

Colorado took advantage of their early chances, with left wing Jonathan Drouin scoring off a pass from center Nathan MacKinnon in the first period. Sam Malinski extended the lead in the second, beating Samsonov from the high slot after receiving a pass from Parker Kelly.

Eichel’s Power-Play Goal

Eichel provided the lone highlight for Vegas with a power-play goal late in the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1. His shot from the slot found its way past Avalanche goaltender Justus Annunen just 18 seconds after Colorado was called for a penalty.

However, the Knights couldn’t mount a comeback, and Colorado sealed the game with an empty-net goal by Logan O’Connor with 50 seconds left.

Key Takeaways from the Game

  1. Roster Hopefuls Impress

    • Several Knights players fighting for a spot on the opening-night roster stood out. The fourth line of Tanner Laczynski, Zach Aston-Reese, and Jonas Rondbjerg played well, generating chances and not conceding a goal. “I didn’t have a problem with any of them,” Cassidy said after the game.

  2. Samsonov’s Solid Play

    • Despite the loss, Samsonov showed poise in net, making crucial saves early on to keep the game within reach. He made a particularly notable paddle save in the first period, stopping a rebound attempt from Ivan Ivan.

  3. Defensive Adjustments Needed

    • Vegas showed signs of rust, especially early on, which allowed Colorado to control the game’s pace. Cassidy emphasized the need for the team to clean up their play against high-caliber offenses like Colorado.

Looking Ahead

The Golden Knights now sit at 3-2 in preseason play. They will close out their preseason schedule with a final home game on Saturday against the San Jose Sharks, giving them another chance to fine-tune their lineup before the regular season begins.

⚙ California Tech Entrepreneurs Flock to Las Vegas for Business Opportunities and Better Quality of Life

Kent Yoshimura, co-founder of NeuroGum, which produces caffeinated gum for memory and focus, relocated his multimillion-dollar business from Los Angeles to Las Vegas a few years ago and hasn’t looked back. Speaking at the third annual Vegas Tech Summit on Thursday, Yoshimura highlighted the many benefits he’s experienced since moving, including easier access to local politicians, the convenience of hiking at Red Rock Canyon, and the smoother daily commute.

“I live in Summerlin and it’s 20 miles to my office, and it takes 20 minutes,” Yoshimura said. “When I was in downtown [Los Angeles] to Koreatown, where my office was, it was only eight miles, and it took 45 minutes.”

Yoshimura noted that the move to Las Vegas has provided him with a boost in both energy and focus, citing the city's business-friendly environment and fewer personal and professional distractions as key factors. He’s also established a warehouse and office near the Las Vegas Strip and moved part of his team to the city.

“When you don’t have to think about that excess stuff as much, it makes life much easier and allows you to maintain a higher level of focus,” he said. “And I probably see more people now being in Vegas than I did in L.A. because everybody wants to come visit here.”

A Growing Trend: California Entrepreneurs Relocating to Las Vegas

Yoshimura’s story mirrors a growing trend of California tech entrepreneurs and business leaders migrating to Las Vegas in search of better business opportunities and a higher quality of life. Many are drawn by Nevada’s pro-business environment, including lower taxes, fewer regulations, and less congestion compared to California’s more restrictive landscape.

Nearly 158,000 Californians relocated to Nevada between 2020 and 2023, accounting for 43% of all new residents during that period, according to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Los Angeles consistently tops surveys as the primary source of new residents to Las Vegas since the onset of the pandemic.

Several high-profile business figures have already made the move, including Andrew Cherng, co-founder of Panda Express, and David Chao, co-founder of DCM, a multibillion-dollar venture capital firm.

Teddy Liaw, founder of NexRep and host of the Vegas Tech Summit, also relocated to Southern Nevada after growing disillusioned with the San Francisco Bay Area. He said that the appeal of Las Vegas to California’s tech elites can be summed up in two words: “pro-business.”

“Nevada offers no corporate income taxes, no personal income taxes, and other business-friendly policies,” Liaw said. “That’s why people are leaving California: the politics and the regulatory environment. They’re finding the opportunities and quality of life here very attractive.”

Concerns About Las Vegas' Housing Crisis

Despite the advantages, Las Vegas faces challenges of its own, notably a growing housing crisis. Residential real estate prices are nearing record highs, making it increasingly difficult for new residents and locals alike to afford homes.

Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine acknowledged the issue at the summit, emphasizing the importance of addressing housing affordability. “Housing instability is economic instability,” Conine said. “If we don’t have a housing market that works, it makes it harder for people to start businesses, for kids to do well in school—nothing is easy when we have a housing problem.”

A Shifting Landscape

The migration of California entrepreneurs to Las Vegas mirrors a broader national trend, similar to how New York residents are moving to Miami. Las Vegas, with its favorable business climate and growing tech scene, is attracting more attention from investors and entrepreneurs nationwide.

Retired Olympic speed skater Apolo Ohno, now an entrepreneur and investor, attended the summit and shared his thoughts on Las Vegas’ growing allure. “Vegas has got a special vibration to it right now,” he said, noting that the city’s evolving business landscape could even tempt him to relocate in the future.

As more tech leaders and businesses shift their operations to Las Vegas, the city is positioning itself as a burgeoning hub for innovation and entrepreneurial growth. With its lower cost of living, tax advantages, and proximity to major West Coast markets, Las Vegas is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for those looking to escape California’s challenges while still thriving in a dynamic business environment.

🍣 Costco Surprises Shoppers with California Rolls and Unique Sushi Offerings

Exploring Sushi: California Roll Offers a Gentle Introduction for Beginners

Sushi has become a beloved cuisine around the world, combining raw fish with fresh vegetables, rice, and seaweed to create bite-sized delights dipped in soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger. While sushi's simple yet nuanced flavors are appealing to many, the idea of eating raw fish, like tuna or salmon, can be a bit daunting for some.

Luckily, sushi menus offer much more than raw fish, allowing diners to enjoy everything from nigiri and sashimi to comforting miso soup. If you're new to sushi and not ready to dive into raw fish, the California roll is an excellent starting point. This widely popular roll typically features a combination of crab (usually imitation), avocado, and cucumber, wrapped in rice and seaweed. The outer layer is often sprinkled with sesame seeds or fish roe, though the roe can be left off for those who aren’t quite ready to try fish eggs.

The California roll is an entry-level favorite because of its simple ingredients and wide availability, making it a great choice for those easing into the sushi experience. Its accessibility even extends beyond restaurants; some Costco locations have started offering sushi trays, including the California roll.

Costco’s California Roll: A Special Treat in Vancouver

A recent photo shared on Reddit revealed that Costco’s food court in Vancouver, Canada, offers a California roll for $9.99. Though sushi at Costco may seem surprising, it's worth noting that the California roll was supposedly invented by chef Hidekazu Tojo, who is based in Vancouver, making the dish a local delicacy. Shoppers noted that sushi trays have also been spotted in Seattle-area Costco locations and a few other states across the U.S.

The rolls at Costco appear to feature real crab meat, along with avocado and cucumber, and are topped with sesame seeds. While some customers debated whether $9.99 was too high for a "basic" roll, others were intrigued by Costco's varied offerings in Canada, such as chicken tenders and fries, prompting many to wonder what other unique items Costco might be hiding across its different locations.

A Gentle Introduction to Sushi Culture

The California roll provides a delicious way to explore sushi without diving straight into raw fish. With its familiar flavors and simple ingredients, it’s an ideal choice for those who are new to sushi or prefer cooked options. Whether you're dining at a sushi restaurant or picking up a tray at Costco, the California roll is a great way to start enjoying the world of sushi.
