đ¨ Iconic Tropicana Las Vegas Set for Early Morning Implosion to Make Way for New Development
Las Vegas is set to say farewell to another iconic piece of its historic Strip skyline as the remaining structures of the Tropicana Las Vegas are scheduled for a controlled implosion at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The demolition will last about 22 seconds and will bring down the Club Tower and Paradise Tower, which have been standing since the Tropicana opened its doors in 1957. This marks the end of a 67-year legacy for the Rat Pack-era casino, which has been a part of the ever-changing fabric of Las Vegas history. The implosion will be preceded by a fireworks and drone show, adding a celebratory flair to the significant moment.
Limited Viewing Options for the Public
Despite the buzz surrounding the implosion, getting a glimpse of the event in person may prove challenging for most people. With hotel rooms near the site mostly sold out or priced beyond the reach of many visitors, finding a vantage point may be difficult. Furthermore, there are no designated public viewing areas, and safety measures will keep spectators at a distance.
A perimeter around the demolition site, at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, will be enforced, with pedestrian access restricted. Road closures around the area will further limit the ability to get close to the spectacle.
Where to Watch the Implosion
For those eager to witness the Tropicanaâs final moments, there are a few alternative viewing options:
Parking Garages:
The rooftops of parking garages at New York New York and MGM Grand casino-hotels are prime spots offering unobstructed views of the implosion. However, MGM Resorts Internationalâwhich operates both propertiesâhas yet to confirm if access to these locations will be open to the public on the night of the event.Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay:
The Foundation Room on the 63rd floor of Mandalay Bay is hosting a sold-out viewing party. This venue, widely considered to have the best view of the Strip, partnered with LiveNation for the exclusive event, promising attendees a premier vantage point.Ellis Island Casinoâs Front Yard:
Just two blocks off the Strip, Ellis Island Casino is throwing a viewing party of its own, featuring Las Vegas trivia and karaoke leading up to the demolition. Located on Koval Lane, Ellis Island offers another solid option for fans looking to enjoy the historic event with a lively crowd.Neighborhood Viewing Locations:
Locals may be able to catch distant views of the implosion from several parks across Las Vegas. Parks in Summerlin and Centennial Hills on the west and northwest sides of the city, as well as spots on the east and southeast sides of the valley, could offer decent sightlines of the event, though darkness and distance may hinder the experience for some.
Virtual Options for Watching
For those unable to attend in person or who prefer the comfort of their own homes, the Las Vegas Review-Journal will be livestreaming the event, allowing fans across the world to witness the end of the Tropicana from anywhere. Local television channels are also expected to broadcast the implosion live.
A New Era for the Tropicana Site
The demolition of the Tropicana makes way for an exciting new chapter in Las Vegas development. The 35-acre site will be transformed into a $1.5 billion stadium for the Oakland Athletics, who are relocating to Las Vegas. Ballyâs Corp., which holds the gaming license for the now-shuttered property, and the Athletics have ambitious plans for the location. The stadium is set to be built on nine acres of the property, with the potential for a new hotel-resort to be developed at a later date. However, as of now, no specific funding plan for the stadium has been publicly announced, and Ballyâs has not disclosed details about the resortâs future.
Cost and Logistics of the Implosion
The planned implosion of the Tropicana is estimated to cost around $1.2 million and will require the use of approximately 2,100 pounds of explosives. The demolition of both the Club Tower and Paradise Tower will clear the space necessary for the construction of the stadium and future developments.
As Las Vegas continues to evolve and reshape its skyline, the Tropicana joins the ranks of iconic casinos that have been reduced to rubble to make way for new ventures. For many locals and tourists alike, the implosion will be a moment of nostalgia, signaling the end of an era while ushering in new possibilities for the ever-changing city.
đ Acesâ Season Ends as Liberty Knock Out Reigning Champions in Semifinal Showdown
The Las Vegas Acesâ bid for a historic three-peat came to an abrupt end on Sunday as they fell to the New York Liberty 76-62 in Game 4 of their WNBA semifinal series. The defeat, which took place at Michelob Ultra Arena, eliminated the two-time defending champions from the playoffs and ended their 2024 season. Despite the efforts of Aâja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, the Aces struggled offensively in their season finale, shooting just 32.8% from the field.
Aces head coach Becky Hammon summed up the closing moments of the game as âjust grasping for straws,â as her team couldnât find a rhythm against a determined Liberty squad.
âAt the end of the day, we just didnât have it, shooting-wise,â Hammon said postgame. âI think (the Liberty) earned it. They earned it all year.â
The loss avenged the Libertyâs defeat in the 2023 WNBA Finals and snapped the Acesâ run of dominance. âThis team was put together to take us out, and they did,â Hammon added, referring to the Libertyâs roster assembled to challenge Las Vegas.
Wilson's Historic Season Ends, But She Stays Optimistic
Aâja Wilson, the reigning WNBA MVP, led the Aces with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Despite her efforts, it wasnât enough to carry the Aces past a Liberty team that adjusted well after Las Vegasâ Game 3 win.
Wilsonâs stellar season saw her make history, becoming the first unanimous MVP since 1997 and setting records for points and rebounds in a single season. Hammon, visibly emotional, spoke about how much Wilsonâs accomplishments meant to her, stating that it "hurts" to see such an outstanding playerâs season end this way.
But Wilson was quick to put things in perspective. âYeah, the outcome is not what we wanted, but I think we have some things that we can take away from it that we canât just totally throw out,â she said. Wilson noted that three-peats are extremely difficult to achieve, a feat rarely accomplished in any sport. She also emphasized that the team will use this season as a learning experience for next year. âThis year really kind of set a tone for us going into the offseason about how we want to handle things,â she added.
Liberty Outplay Aces with Defensive Adjustments
The Liberty were led by Sabrina Ionescu, who scored 22 points, and Breanna Stewart, who added 19. Their defense was a major factor in the win, holding the Aces to just 23.3% shooting from beyond the arc. The Liberty, who had struggled to contain Wilson and the Aces in Game 3, made key adjustments by running their offense through Stewart and locking down defensively.
Stewart, reflecting on last yearâs loss to the Aces in the Finals, admitted she had âkept receiptsâ after the Acesâ championship parade, where Hammon joked about Stewartâs shooting struggles. On Sunday, however, Stewart and her team found redemption, ending the Aces' quest for a third title.
âTheyâve made us a better team,â Ionescu said about the Aces. âTheyâve laid down the foundation, and theyâve continued to motivate everyone in the league to just want to be better and want to win championships.â
Whatâs Next for the Aces?
With the season over, changes are likely ahead for the Aces. Hammon hinted that the team may look different next year. Kelsey Plum, a key part of the Aces' "Core Four," is the only player not under contract beyond this season, and her emotional reaction after the game hinted at the possibility of this being her last game in an Aces uniform.
When asked about the teamâs future, Hammon acknowledged that adjustments would need to be made. âObviously we have to get better,â she said. âYou gotta make the moves necessary, whatever that means, to put the best product that we possibly can. Itâs not going to be the same group probably next year. It just wonât. And Iâm sad about that.â
Hammon admitted that the offseason would bring a new level of focus for the team, a departure from the celebration-filled exit parties theyâve had in recent years. âWeâve only done exit partying,â she joked. âThis offseason, itâs lock-in time.â
For now, Aâja Wilson and Chelsea Gray will take time away from basketball to focus on their personal lives. But Wilson was clear that when December rolls around, sheâll be ready to refocus. âCome in December and into January, itâs lock-in time,â she warned, signaling that the Aces will be back, motivated, and ready to chase another championship next season.
The Acesâ reign may have ended this year, but their future remains bright as they look to regroup, rebuild, and come back stronger in 2025.

đ McDonaldâs to Introduce Chicken Big Mac to U.S. Menus for Limited Time
McDonaldâs is set to bring a new twist to its iconic Big Mac sandwich, swapping out its classic beef patties for crispy chicken. The fast-food giant announced this week that the Chicken Big Mac will debut in U.S. restaurants on October 10 for a limited time. This marks the first time the Chicken Big Mac has been available in the United States, though it has been previously tested in select international markets, including Canada and the UK.
The Chicken Big Mac stays true to the original's format, featuring two tempura-battered chicken patties, lettuce, pickles, onions, American cheese, and the famous Big Mac sauceâall stacked between three layers of the traditional sesame seed bun. The sandwich will be available "while supplies last" at participating McDonaldâs locations.
McDonaldâs Chicken Strategy and Competitive Landscape
The launch of the Chicken Big Mac aligns with McDonaldâs growing emphasis on chicken, as the company aims to increase its market share in this key segment of the fast-food industry. During a second-quarter earnings call in July, CEO Chris Kempczinski revealed that McDonaldâs chicken sales have now reached the same level as its beef sales. He emphasized the company's commitment to expanding its chicken offerings, saying that McDonaldâs is âfocused on growing share in areas like chicken.â
This push comes as McDonaldâs continues to compete in the ever-growing chicken sandwich wars alongside major competitors like Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and KFC, all of which have ramped up their chicken sandwich offerings in recent years.
Consumer Spending and McDonaldâs Financial Performance
McDonaldâs latest move comes at a time when the company is facing challenges with consumer spending. Amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty, customersâparticularly from lower-income householdsâare cutting back on discretionary spending, impacting McDonaldâs sales. The company saw its global same-store sales decline by nearly 1% in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2024, marking the first time in nearly four years that it reported a decline in this key metric. Additionally, McDonaldâs reported a 12% drop in net income for the same period.
In response to these pressures, McDonaldâs has implemented various strategies to draw consumers back into its restaurants, including the introduction of deals such as the $5 meal deal launched over the summer. The company is also leveraging its growing digital sales platforms, which accounted for approximately 40% of its global sales in 2023, to offer personalized promotions and incentives aimed at increasing customer traffic.
Looking Ahead: McDonaldâs Chicken Expansion and Earnings
The introduction of the Chicken Big Mac comes as part of McDonaldâs broader strategy to diversify its menu and strengthen its chicken category to appeal to a wider audience. This move could help the company retain customers who are seeking new menu items while also capitalizing on the popularity of chicken-based offerings, a category that continues to grow in the fast-food industry.
McDonaldâs is set to release its third-quarter earnings report at the end of October, which will provide insight into how well its recent promotions, including the Chicken Big Mac, are helping to boost sales and navigate the current economic climate.
As the company continues to adapt to changing consumer behaviors, McDonaldâs is betting that its new chicken offerings, along with strategic pricing and menu innovation, will help it weather the challenges ahead and stay competitive in an increasingly tough market.
