❎ Challengers Look to Unseat Incumbents in Nevada's Congressional Races, but Face Tough Battles
Nevada’s four congressional districts are gearing up for a competitive election season, with challengers hoping to unseat longtime incumbents. However, disrupting the status quo in these districts is proving to be an uphill battle.
The incumbents include:
Democratic Rep. Dina Titus in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District
Republican Rep. Mark Amodei in the 2nd Congressional District
Democratic Rep. Susie Lee in the 3rd Congressional District
Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford in the 4th Congressional District
Each is facing challengers from across the political spectrum:
Republican Mark Robertson is running against Titus.
Nonpartisan Greg Kidd is challenging Amodei.
Republican Drew Johnson is taking on Lee.
Former North Las Vegas Mayor and Republican John Lee is contesting Horsford's seat.
Among these races, only the 3rd Congressional District—where Susie Lee is running against Drew Johnson—is rated competitive by the Cook Political Report, which still gives Lee the edge. The other districts are viewed as safer seats for the incumbents.
Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District: A Closer Look
Susie Lee, a Democrat who has represented Nevada’s 3rd District since 2019, is running for re-election. Her district covers parts of Summerlin, Red Rock, Spring Valley, and the southern tip of the state. Originally from Canton, Ohio, Lee moved to Las Vegas in 1993, working extensively in the education nonprofit sector before entering politics.
Lee is known for her bipartisan approach in Congress and currently serves as vice chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bipartisan group aimed at finding common ground on key issues. She was also ranked as one of the top 20 Democratic representatives who most often voted against party lines.
Lee’s Republican challenger, Drew Johnson, is a conservative policy analyst and columnist who moved to Southern Nevada roughly a decade ago. Originally from Tennessee, Johnson founded the Beacon Center, a public policy think tank, and has worked in various roles that focused on government transparency, tax policy, and energy issues.
Key Issues: Cost of Living and Housing
Both candidates agree that cost of living is the most important issue facing Southern Nevada residents. Lee has promoted her efforts to lower healthcare costs, particularly through her work on legislation that capped the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare. She also worked on a bipartisan bill, which was endorsed by Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, to cut red tape and speed up affordable housing projects.
Johnson, on the other hand, has focused on being a government watchdog. He aims to eliminate government waste, reduce federal debt, and expand oil and gas production in a responsible manner to drive down energy prices, which he sees as a direct way to alleviate cost-of-living pressures.
Housing Policies: Contrasting Approaches
On the issue of housing, Lee is working to speed up affordable housing projects by freeing up public lands for development and cracking down on corporate landlords that contribute to rising housing prices. She also seeks to continue securing investments in affordable housing projects.
Johnson’s approach is more focused on partnering with the Bureau of Land Management to release federal land for housing development. However, he emphasizes the importance of balancing development with natural resource conservation to ensure environmental sustainability.
Where They Differ from Their Parties
Both candidates have broken ranks with their parties on certain key issues. Johnson, for example, disagrees with Republicans on abortion and tariff policies. He opposes a federal abortion ban, arguing for bodily autonomy, and criticizes tariffs, which he views as a hidden tax on American consumers.
Lee, meanwhile, has distanced herself from some of her party's positions, most notably in her opposition to the end of Title 42, a Trump-era policy that allowed for quicker expulsions of migrants at the U.S. border. Lee argued that the policy was essential for border security.
Looking Ahead
As the 2024 elections approach, Nevada’s incumbents face varying degrees of opposition, but most races are considered safe for the current officeholders. The 3rd District is the one to watch, as Lee and Johnson go head-to-head in what may become a closely contested battle.

🏒 Adin Hill Gears Up for a Breakout Season as Golden Knights’ No. 1 Goaltender
With the 2024-25 NHL season underway, Adin Hill is embracing his new role as the Vegas Golden Knights’ clear-cut starting goaltender. After helping lead the team to its first Stanley Cup in franchise history, Hill is focused on ensuring that his injury struggles are behind him and that he can stay healthy to help the Golden Knights make another deep playoff run.
Hill, 28, enters his third season with the Golden Knights following a summer dedicated to refining his training regimen to avoid the injuries that have plagued him in the past. His efforts are timely, as the Knights’ decision to trade fellow goaltender Logan Thompson in June has cemented Hill as the team’s undisputed No. 1 goalie.
"My body feels good. My hips and lower body (are) better than ever,” Hill said. “Just tried to make a program this summer and stuck with it.”
A New Training Regimen
Hill’s offseason focus has been on ensuring his body is ready to handle the rigors of a full season as the top goaltender. While his training program is similar to what he's done in previous years, Hill has made key adjustments aimed at preventing the lower-body injuries that have limited his availability in the past.
Despite his injury history, Hill has been a steady performer for the Golden Knights. He posted a .912 save percentage in the regular season last year and an impressive .932 save percentage during the playoffs, where he played a crucial role in the Knights’ Stanley Cup run.
Overcoming Injury Concerns
The key issue for Hill has never been his performance on the ice but his ability to stay healthy. He set a career-high by appearing in 35 games last season, but lower-body injuries kept him out for significant stretches. In his first year with the Knights, Hill made just 25 starts.
“It’s hard to play the position of goalie with injury on your mind,” Hill said. “You just have to go out there and play.”
When Hill was healthy, he showed his worth. He started last season with a 10-2-2 record and, despite his injury absences, stepped up in the playoffs when called upon. In the Knights’ first-round series against the Dallas Stars, Hill was given the nod in Game 5 with the series tied 2-2. He posted a shutout in Game 6 and allowed only five goals in his three appearances, though the Knights ultimately fell in Game 7.
“It was frustrating,” Hill said of his injuries last season. “Nobody wants to get injured. It sucks seeing your team battle without you.”
New Goaltending Tandem with Ilya Samsonov
With Thompson now gone, Hill is set to take on a larger workload, but his success will also depend on how well his new goaltending partner, Ilya Samsonov, performs. The Golden Knights signed Samsonov to a one-year, $1.8 million deal in July, hoping the veteran can be a reliable backup.
Samsonov, like Hill, has plenty to prove after a disappointing season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he posted an .890 save percentage. Both goalies are entering the final year of their contracts and will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the season.
Despite the competition for playing time, Hill and Samsonov have quickly built a solid relationship. “He was probably the first guy who texted me after I signed my contract,” Samsonov said. “He’s such a nice guy. He’s helped me a lot.”
Hill’s Calm Demeanor: A Key to His Success
One of Hill’s standout qualities is his ability to stay calm and composed, even in high-pressure situations. Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy praised Hill’s maturity and mental toughness, which have made him a reliable presence in net.
“He’s mature that way,” Cassidy said. “Even though he hasn’t played a ton of games in a particular season, he has the demeanor to do that. His health just needs to cooperate. I think he has a good mentality to do that.”
Hill’s ability to shake off bad goals and bounce back from poor performances has made him a trusted figure in the Golden Knights' lineup. This resilience will be crucial as he steps into a leadership role as the team’s primary goaltender.
Looking Ahead: Hill’s Big Opportunity
Hill’s goal for the upcoming season is clear: stay healthy and play as many games as possible. With a strong training regimen and a renewed focus on maintaining his physical condition, Hill is determined to take on a bigger workload and show he can be a reliable No. 1 goaltender for the Golden Knights—or any other team, should he enter free agency next summer.
“Your mind has to kind of be clear. Be confident in your body and go play,” Hill said. “I’m going to try to play as many as I can, as many as they let me and go from there.”
As the Golden Knights look to defend their Stanley Cup title, much of their success will depend on Hill’s ability to stay in top form. If he can remain healthy, the Knights’ chances of another deep playoff run look promising.

Kestler’s approach to tacos is rooted in authenticity and creativity, combining traditional recipes with his own modern twist. Aroma’s menu offers a variety of tacos that have quickly become fan favorites, and Yelp’s praise of the restaurant reflects the quality and care that go into each dish.

In fact, Aroma ranked No. 1 on Yelp’s list of the top 100 taco spots in the U.S. for 2023, solidifying its reputation as one of the country’s best taco destinations. Additionally, the restaurant recently claimed the No. 2 spot on Yelp’s list of Top 25 Mexican Restaurants for 2024, a testament to its consistent excellence.

Not only has Aroma earned top honors from Yelp, but Kestler himself was also named a James Beard Award finalist in the Best Chef: Southwest category—one of the most prestigious recognitions in the culinary world. This accolade reflects Kestler’s talent and dedication to his craft, as he brings the flavors of Latin America to the forefront of Nevada’s food scene.

🏠 Southern Nevada Housing Market Faces Challenges as Sales Drop and Homes Sit on Market Longer
Southern Nevada’s housing market continues to struggle as supply outpaces demand, leading to a rise in unsold homes and a drop in sales, according to the latest data from Las Vegas Realtors (LVR). The number of homes sold in September dropped by 16.2 percent from the previous month and by 1.6 percent compared to September of last year, reflecting the ongoing challenges in the region's real estate market.
This comes as Las Vegas' housing market attempts to recover from what was its worst year of sales since the Great Recession in 2008, with 2023 marking a significant decline in sales activity.
Surge in New Listings and Unsold Properties
While sales have declined, the Las Vegas Valley leads the nation in new home listings, outpacing cities like San Diego and Sacramento, according to Redfin data. However, this influx of new listings has not been met with equal buyer demand, leaving many homes on the market for extended periods.
As of the end of September, there were 5,458 single-family homes listed without an offer, marking a 34.2 percent increase from the previous year. Additionally, 1,731 condos and townhomes remained unsold, a staggering 67.2 percent increase from a year earlier. This growing inventory of unsold properties highlights the mismatch between supply and demand in the region.
Economic Outlook and Interest Rates
Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of optimism. LVR President Merri Perry noted that recent economic developments, particularly the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut in September, could provide some relief to the housing market.
“The interest rate cut announced in September by the Fed can only help the housing market,” Perry said. “While I don’t think this will have a dramatic impact, it certainly helps people, especially prospective homebuyers.”
Lower interest rates could make home loans more affordable, potentially encouraging more buyers to enter the market. However, with high home prices and rising costs of living, it remains to be seen how much of an effect this will have on overall demand.
Housing Prices Nearing Record Highs
Despite the dip in sales, home prices in Southern Nevada have continued to climb. The median price of an existing single-family home sold in September was $479,900, representing a 6.6 percent increase from the previous year. This figure is approaching the all-time high of $482,000 set in May 2022, according to LVR.
Similarly, condos and townhomes reached an all-time high in pricing, underscoring the limited affordability in the market. As prices continue to rise, the affordability crisis in the region has become an increasing concern.
Sales Trends and Market Outlook
While 2023 saw a sluggish start, LVR expressed cautious optimism that this year’s sales may surpass the dismal numbers from 2022. For most of 2024, home sales have been ahead of last year’s pace, which marked the slowest year for local home sales since the economic downturn in 2008.
LVR reported 29,069 total sales of existing local homes, condos, and townhomes in 2023, a sharp decline from the 35,584 sales in 2022. The drop in 2022 followed a record-setting year in 2021, when 50,010 properties were sold, making it the best year for home sales in Las Vegas’ history.
Housing Crisis and Affordability Concerns
Las Vegas remains in the midst of a housing crisis, driven by several factors. One significant issue is the large number of homeowners who locked in low-interest rates during the pandemic, creating a barrier to moving or selling their homes. Many homeowners are reluctant to sell, as they would be forced to finance a new home at much higher rates, limiting the availability of properties for buyers.
The region is also grappling with a shortage of affordable housing and limited land availability, as much of the surrounding land is controlled by the federal government. The lack of land for development has driven prices up, exacerbating the housing crisis.
Housing affordability has emerged as a top election issue for Nevada residents. Many locals are finding themselves priced out of the market, a point acknowledged by a Clark County housing official during a recent panel at UNLV, who admitted that half the county’s population is likely unable to afford a home in the current market.
Looking Ahead
The future of the Southern Nevada housing market remains uncertain, with both positive and negative trends at play. While economic factors like interest rate cuts may provide some relief, the underlying issues of high home prices, limited supply of affordable housing, and a growing inventory of unsold properties continue to pose challenges. As Las Vegas navigates its housing crisis, the next few months will be critical in determining whether the market can regain its footing or continue to face slowdowns in sales and rising prices.
