💲 Social Security Recipients to Receive 2.5% Cost-of-Living Increase in 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on Thursday that millions of Social Security recipients will receive a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to their monthly benefits starting in January 2025. This adjustment is aimed at helping retirees, disabled individuals, and other beneficiaries keep pace with rising living costs.
For the 72.5 million people receiving Social Security, this COLA translates into an average monthly increase of about $50. While this adjustment is designed to provide some relief, many recipients, like Sherri Myers, an 82-year-old retiree from Pensacola City, Florida, are concerned that it won't be enough to counteract the rising cost of everyday necessities, including food and housing.
“I would like to eat good, but I can’t,” Myers said, explaining that even basic items like vegetables have become too expensive. She now finds herself considering a part-time job to make ends meet, highlighting the financial strain many retirees still face, despite the benefit increases.
A Smaller Increase Reflects Slowing Inflation
The 2.5% COLA is significantly lower than the 3.2% increase in 2024 and the historic 8.7% hike in 2023, which was driven by the highest inflation in four decades. The smaller adjustment reflects the moderation of inflation over the past year, as prices for goods and services have begun to stabilize.
SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley said the adjustment will help "tens of millions of people keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool." However, the sentiment from many beneficiaries suggests that even as inflation slows, the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and basic goods continue to strain household budgets.
Notification of New Benefits and Financial Outlook
Social Security recipients will be notified of their new benefit amounts via mail starting in early December, with adjustments for nearly 7.5 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) kicking in on December 31. The Social Security payroll tax ceiling will also increase in 2025, rising from $168,600 in 2024 to $176,100, ensuring the program continues to collect revenue from higher earners.
However, the announcement comes amid growing concerns about the future of Social Security. The annual trustees report, released in May 2024, projected that the Social Security trust fund will be unable to pay full benefits starting in 2035. If the fund becomes depleted, beneficiaries could see a 17% reduction in their payments, with the government only able to pay 83% of scheduled benefits without legislative intervention.
Calls for Congressional Action
In response to the looming shortfall, AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins issued a statement urging Congress to take bipartisan action to secure the future of Social Security. Jenkins emphasized the importance of strengthening the program to ensure older Americans can continue to rely on it for financial stability in retirement.
“There is more we must do to ensure older Americans can continue to count on Social Security,” Jenkins said, calling for long-term solutions to the program's funding challenges.
Presidential Candidates’ Plans for Social Security
The issue of Social Security has become a key talking point in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Candidates from both major parties, including Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump, have presented differing strategies for addressing the program’s financial challenges.
In an interview with AARP in August 2024, Harris proposed making billionaires and large corporations “pay their fair share” in taxes to help cover the funding shortfall, arguing that this revenue could be used to protect and strengthen Social Security for future generations.
On the other hand, Trump expressed opposition to raising the retirement age or cutting benefits. He emphasized that economic growth, rather than policy changes, would protect the program, noting that during his previous term in office, he did not consider making any cuts to Social Security.
“We’ll protect it with growth,” Trump said. “I don’t want to do anything having to do with increasing age. I’m going to do nothing to Social Security.”
Looking Ahead
As Social Security recipients prepare to receive their 2.5% increase in January, the broader conversation around the program's future will likely intensify in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election. While the cost-of-living adjustment will provide some relief, concerns about rising expenses and the long-term sustainability of the program remain at the forefront of public discourse. The decisions made by Congress and future administrations will be critical in ensuring that Social Security continues to serve the millions of Americans who depend on it.
🏒 Golden Knights Start Season Strong with 8-4 Win Over Colorado Avalanche
The Vegas Golden Knights are playing the motivation game, and they're using one of the oldest tricks in the sports playbook: the no-respect card. Despite being a highly successful franchise, and fresh off an 8-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche to open their eighth season, the Knights are already adopting a familiar narrative used by countless championship teams and athletes before them—the idea that no one believes in them.
This tactic, commonly employed by legendary figures like Michael Jordan and teams such as Georgia football, isn’t new. Jordan’s Chicago Bulls famously leaned on perceived slights to fuel their NBA titles, and Georgia’s recent college football championships saw them leaning into the "nobody believes in us" mantra.
For the Golden Knights, this narrative serves as an extra boost of energy as they look to return to championship form.
A Proven Strategy for Champions
The concept of playing with a chip on your shoulder, even when you’re a proven winner, is nothing new. Many of the most successful teams and athletes in history have used it to push themselves beyond their limits. For the Golden Knights, who are coming off a solid season but fell short of their ultimate goal, it’s a way to stay hungry.
But let’s be clear: nobody is actually counting the Knights out.
Although they’ve introduced some new and younger players into the locker room, there’s no significant doom-and-gloom outlook for this team. Since their astonishing Stanley Cup Final run as an expansion franchise in 2018, predictions about where the Knights will finish have fluctuated, but they’ve always been in the mix. There’s no writing them off.
Sure, the odds may shift, and they might not be favorites to win the Stanley Cup every season, but they are far from being forgotten contenders. They’ve been consistently strong since their inception.
Coach Cassidy’s Perspective
Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy recognizes the importance of motivation for his players, even if the "no-respect" idea might be a bit exaggerated. He acknowledges that while the team has already proven itself as champions, a little extra motivation can go a long way.
“I think players need motivation, but to what degree that comes from is a good question,” Cassidy said. “Are you too old? Is your window closing? There’s some motivation there. But we’ve been champions. We play the right way. We have a great organization."
Cassidy sees value in using that chip on their shoulder for an extra push throughout the long season, but he’s careful not to overuse it. “It’s a long year,” he noted. "If you do it every night, the message can get old. But to get off to a good start, I think we can use it.”
Coming Up Short Fuels the Fire
After winning the Stanley Cup in 2023, the Knights leaned on the "no one expects us to repeat" narrative heading into the following season. While they didn’t win back-to-back titles, falling to the Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs, the defeat has given them new fuel for the 2024-25 season.
This failure to meet expectations has reinvigorated the team, particularly veterans like Shea Theodore, who expressed that the disappointment from last season is still fresh in their minds.
"I think it always motivates you, any time you win and the following season have the same expectation and come up short,” Theodore said. “It leaves a sour taste in our mouths. We want to get back to where we were.”
Despite some roster changes, Theodore believes the Knights have added strong players with good character who will fit seamlessly into the lineup, keeping the team on track for another deep playoff run.
Adversity as Motivation
For many elite athletes and teams, adversity is the key to unlocking peak performance. Brayden McNabb echoed this sentiment, pointing to last season's injury struggles as a major motivator heading into this year.
"We had a lot of adversity last season with injuries, so now it’s prove-it time," McNabb said. "We’re a better team when we have something to prove and have that chip on our shoulders. There are a lot of people writing us off. But we believe in this group. We believe in this organization."
This mentality—believing in themselves even when facing challenges—has been a hallmark of the Golden Knights since their inception. Their ability to find success, even when the odds aren’t stacked in their favor, has defined them as one of the NHL’s most resilient teams.
The Power of Perception
The idea of no respect might be overplayed, but it can be an incredibly effective tool for motivating players. As coach Cassidy pointed out, talented athletes often play better when they feel they have something to prove.
Even Michael Jordan, one of the greatest players in sports history, was known to manufacture slights to fuel his performance. For the Golden Knights, it might seem unnecessary to claim they’re being overlooked—after all, their success speaks for itself—but the added edge could be what pushes them through the long grind of the NHL season.
The Knights may not be the overwhelming favorites for the Stanley Cup this season, but they are far from being written off. The team understands that a little extra motivation, whether self-imposed or real, can make a significant difference.
As the season progresses, the Golden Knights will undoubtedly keep leaning on that chip on their shoulders to stay sharp, stay competitive, and make another run at bringing home the Cup.

🎰 American Gaming Association’s Blueprint for Future Success at G2E 2024
At the opening of the 2024 Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas, Bill Miller, President and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA), outlined a comprehensive blueprint for the gaming industry's future success. With three consecutive years of record-breaking gross gaming revenue, Miller emphasized that 2024 is on track to surpass those numbers, positioning the gaming industry for continued growth.
Addressing hundreds of industry executives at the Venetian Expo Center, Miller's state-of-the-industry address focused on the convergence of three key megatrends that he called the American Blueprint. The blueprint is designed to guide the industry toward creating immersive entertainment experiences, fostering responsible and safe gaming practices, and transforming gaming into a sustainable economic growth engine that benefits local communities.
The American Blueprint: Innovation, Safety, and Sustainability
Miller explained the three core principles of the American Blueprint:
Immersive Entertainment Experiences: Miller emphasized the importance of offering guests the most exciting and engaging entertainment. In a world where experiences drive consumer choices, the gaming industry needs to stay ahead of the curve by continuously innovating.
Safe and Responsible Gaming: The blueprint stresses the need for safe and fair gaming environments. With robust regulations and protections in place, Miller said, the industry can confidently continue its expansion, particularly in areas like online gaming and sports betting.
Economic Growth and Community Benefits: The gaming industry is more than just entertainment—it’s a major economic driver. Miller highlighted how gaming contributes to local economies by providing jobs, generating tax revenue, and supporting infrastructure projects.
Las Vegas Leading the Way
Miller pointed to Las Vegas as a prime example of a city already implementing the American Blueprint, noting its unique ability to blend innovation, entertainment, and economic impact.
Attracting Younger Generations
One major aspect of Las Vegas’ success is its appeal to younger generations, a trend noted by MGM Resorts International CEO Bill Hornbuckle during his G2E keynote. Miller highlighted that in 2019, the average age of a casino visitor was 50. Today, however, the gaming industry is actively working to engage Millennials and Gen Z. These groups are critical for the future of gaming, especially as they are set to make up 80% of the global workforce in the next five years.
Las Vegas has embraced this shift by leveraging innovation and technology, attracting younger audiences with immersive experiences and integrating sports and entertainment into the gaming landscape.
The Rise of Sports as a Driver of Growth
Miller praised Las Vegas for its transformation into a global sports hub. The city has welcomed major sports franchises like the NFL’s Raiders and the forthcoming MLB’s Athletics, while local teams such as the WNBA Aces and NHL Golden Knights have brought championships to the Strip.
"Las Vegas has become a preferred destination for the world's greatest sporting events," Miller said, pointing to the Super Bowl and Formula One as examples. He also noted that sports and gaming are more integrated than ever, with partnerships between gaming companies and major sports leagues leading to increased fan engagement and the growth of broadcast rights.
Responsible Gaming: A Key to Long-Term Success
Miller also emphasized the importance of responsible gaming. As the gaming industry continues to expand, especially in the realm of sports betting and online gaming, Miller called for rigorous safety measures to protect players and maintain confidence in the fairness of games.
"There's no way we can create a nationwide market involving hundreds of millions of fans unless political leaders, regulators, leagues, and players are confident that the games will be fair," Miller said. This confidence is critical to the industry’s long-term success, as it not only drives economic growth but also reassures stakeholders that the industry is operating ethically and responsibly.
Economic Impact: Gaming as a Growth Engine
Miller underscored the gaming industry's role as a significant economic engine in the U.S., generating a $329 billion economic impact annually, supporting 1.8 million jobs, and contributing $53 billion in tax revenue. This revenue, Miller explained, directly benefits local communities, funding essential services like education, infrastructure, and public safety.
In Nevada, the state’s 6.75% gaming tax contributes significantly to the general fund, supporting various public services, including schools, parks, and road construction. The gaming industry’s local economic impact extends beyond Nevada as well. In Ohio, for example, 95% of sports betting tax revenue is earmarked for public schools, and in Pennsylvania, gaming taxes have funded grants for fire and ambulance services. In Florida, gambling revenue is helping preserve environmental treasures like the Everglades.
Moreover, gaming supports small businesses across the country, including those that supply resorts and benefit from the influx of visitors. "These main street businesses thrive by supplying our resorts and benefiting from spending by the visitors that we draw," Miller said.
Conclusion: A Promising Future for the Gaming Industry
Bill Miller’s American Blueprint offers a roadmap for the future of the gaming industry, one that prioritizes innovation, responsible gaming, and sustainable economic growth. By embracing these principles, the industry can continue to thrive and contribute to the communities it serves.
With Las Vegas leading the way—through innovations like the Sphere, the city's emergence as a sports powerhouse, and its commitment to safety—the gaming industry is poised for continued success in 2024 and beyond. The Global Gaming Expo, with its focus on the future, offers a glimpse into the exciting developments that will shape the next chapter of this dynamic industry.
❎ Vice President Kamala Harris to Host Town Hall with Latino Voters in Las Vegas
Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Las Vegas this Thursday to host a town hall aimed at engaging with Latino voters, a crucial demographic in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Organized by Noticias Univision, the event provides an opportunity for Harris to directly address the concerns and questions of undecided Hispanic voters in Nevada, a key battleground state.
The town hall is part of a larger effort by both Democrats and Republicans to solidify support among Latino voters, a group that comprises 20 percent of Nevada’s overall electorate. With the potential to swing elections in tight races, Latino voters have become a focal point for both parties as the 2024 campaign season ramps up.
Connecting with Latino Voters in a Battleground State
The event is a strategic move for the Biden-Harris campaign, as Nevada’s Latino electorate holds significant sway in determining the outcome of both local and national elections. Historically, Latino voters in the state have leaned Democratic, but recent trends show a growing diversity in political affiliation, with an increasing number of Latinos considering Republican candidates or identifying as independents.
In 2020, Latinos helped push President Joe Biden to victory in Nevada, but the narrow margin highlighted the importance of consistent engagement with this voter bloc. As the vice president, Harris has made it a priority to reach out to communities of color, and Thursday’s event is a key moment in maintaining that connection.
Format of the Event and Audience Participation
The town hall, which will be recorded and aired later that evening at 7 p.m. local time, offers local Latino voters the chance to ask Harris questions directly. According to Univision, the format was specifically designed to allow a "diverse cross-section of undecided Hispanic voters" to voice their concerns and follow up with additional questions, providing a rare, candid interaction between voters and a high-ranking political leader.
Univision is also planning a similar event next Wednesday with former President Donald Trump in Miami, underscoring the Republican Party’s efforts to make inroads with Latino voters. In addition, Trump will speak to Latino voters in Henderson, Nevada, this Saturday, further highlighting the state’s importance in the upcoming election.
The Race for Latino Support
Both parties recognize that Latino voters are not a monolithic group, with diverse political leanings, priorities, and issues that vary across regions and communities. For Democrats, maintaining the support of Nevada’s Latino population is critical, particularly in a state where elections are often decided by slim margins. For Republicans, increasing their share of the Latino vote could be pivotal in flipping the state.
Key issues for Latino voters often include immigration, healthcare, education, and the economy. During the town hall, Harris is expected to discuss the Biden administration’s policies and accomplishments in these areas, including immigration reform efforts, healthcare access, and economic recovery initiatives post-pandemic. She will likely emphasize the administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for Latino communities and addressing the challenges they face, particularly in terms of rising costs of living and access to affordable housing.
At the same time, Republicans are also honing their message to Latino voters, focusing on concerns about crime, education choice, and economic policies that they argue could better serve Hispanic families. Trump, in his upcoming events, will likely tout his administration's record on job creation and tax cuts, as well as his stance on immigration and border security, key issues that resonate with segments of the Latino electorate, particularly in states like Nevada.
Importance of the Latino Vote in Nevada
Nevada’s growing Latino population has made the state a critical battleground in recent elections. As one of the most diverse states in the nation, Nevada’s electorate is increasingly reflective of the broader demographic shifts happening across the U.S. Latinos are now one of the largest voting blocs in the state, and their influence in local, state, and federal elections continues to grow.
In recent elections, both parties have intensified their outreach to Latino voters, recognizing that winning their support is essential to securing victory in tight races. The Biden-Harris campaign is particularly focused on maintaining the coalition of voters that led to their 2020 win, while Republicans hope to chip away at that base by appealing to Latino voters with messages on economic opportunity and public safety.
Broadcasting the Event to a Wider Audience
Thursday’s town hall will be broadcast across multiple platforms to reach a broader audience beyond those in attendance. It will air in Spanish on Univision and the network’s streaming service Vix, while an English version will be available on YouTube, allowing viewers from around the country to tune in. This dual-language format ensures that both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking Latino voters have access to the event, further expanding its reach and impact.
Looking Ahead to 2024
With the 2024 election fast approaching, the engagement of Latino voters in states like Nevada will be crucial to determining the outcome. The town hall in Las Vegas is part of a broader strategy by the Biden-Harris administration to connect with voters on a personal level and address the concerns of key constituencies.
As both Harris and Trump make their appeals to Latino voters in the coming days, it is clear that Nevada will remain at the center of the national political conversation, with Latino voters playing a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of the country.
