🎭 Best Friends Forever Festival Celebrates the Heart of Emo’s Legacy in Las Vegas

The first night of the new Best Friends Forever festival at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center was a mix of nostalgia and raw emotion as thousands gathered to celebrate the roots of emo and indie rock. As Mike Kinsella, frontman of the band American Football, addressed the crowd with the words, “I don’t know if this is like a funeral or a high school reunion,” it was clear that this event was about reconnecting with a genre that speaks to life’s emotional struggles—something that resonated deeply with the audience.

Best Friends Forever, which runs through the weekend, offers a focused homage to the origins of emo, setting itself apart from Vegas’ other major emo festival, When We Were Young, by targeting an older, more seasoned crowd. While When We Were Young has drawn mainstream attention with headliners like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, Best Friends Forever dives deeper into the emo scene’s history, spotlighting bands that laid the groundwork for the genre’s evolution.

As Mike’s brother, Tim Kinsella, frontman of Cap’N Jazz, joked during his band’s performance, “Probably a lot of people here born in ‘77.” The festival’s lineup reflects this connection to an earlier era of emo, with bands that may not have sold millions of records but have left a lasting impact on the music world.

Tracing Emo’s Roots

The first night of Best Friends Forever brought to life the DNA of emo, with bands like American Football, The Dismemberment Plan, and Fiddlehead delivering performances that highlighted the genre’s thoughtful, often melancholic approach to music. Unlike the more commercially successful emo of the 2000s, these groups emphasized intricate musicianship, layered lyrics, and a cerebral edge.

American Football’s set was a perfect encapsulation of this ethos. The Illinois band played their self-titled debut album in its entirety, celebrating its 25th anniversary. The album, known for its complex guitar work, introspective lyrics, and experimental sound, is a pillar of Midwestern emo. Though the band’s initial run only lasted three years, their influence has been profound, inspiring countless bands that followed in their footsteps.

“It’s amazing that this many people still care about these songs,” said Kinsella, reflecting on the band’s legacy. The crowd responded with rapt attention, hanging on every note of the band’s contemplative, math-rock-inspired tracks.

Emotional Catharsis

Following American Football, Washington D.C.’s The Dismemberment Plan took the stage, with frontman Travis Morrison injecting a burst of energy into the evening. Known for their blend of post-punk and emo, The Dismemberment Plan delivered a dynamic set that showcased their eclectic range. Morrison’s elastic vocals and the band’s fusion of guitars and synths created soaring crescendos of sound, with songs like “Gyroscope” addressing the emotional labor of navigating life’s challenges.

“Happiness is such hard work,” Morrison sang, capturing the mood of the night, where catharsis was found not in joy, but in embracing the sadness that comes with growth and reflection.

Boston’s Fiddlehead followed with a performance that balanced vulnerability and defiance. Lead singer Patrick Flynn’s raw delivery, especially on the song “The Years,” struck a chord with the crowd. “Nothing can change the pain, and I don’t want it to,” Flynn shouted, reaffirming emo’s power to confront difficult emotions head-on.

A Frenetic Finish

The night reached its fever pitch with a performance by Pennsylvania’s Algernon Cadwallader, who pushed the energy in the venue to its peak. Frontman Peter Helmis’ raspy, impassioned vocals, paired with guitarist Colin Mahony’s aggressive, scythe-like playing, stirred the crowd into a frenzy. The band’s sound, chaotic yet melodic, felt like an evolution of the groundwork laid by earlier emo acts, with Cap’N Jazz leading that charge.

By the time Cap’N Jazz took the stage to close the night, the energy was at its peak. The band, often credited as pioneers of emo, delivered a high-octane set filled with jittery, angular guitar riffs and frenetic rhythms. Their music, which teeters between chaos and precision, was the perfect capstone to the festival’s opening night. Despite lead singer Tim Kinsella’s visibly intoxicated state, which he chalked up to drinking more whiskey than usual to “lubricate” his dry throat, the band’s performance was electric.

“I’m sorry this is so unprofessional,” Kinsella apologized before the band’s encore. “As a godfather of emo, this is embarrassing.”

Yet, the crowd forgave him with ease. After all, the night wasn’t about perfection. It was about memories—reliving them, creating new ones, and embracing the emotions that come with them. As The Dismemberment Plan’s Morrison had sung earlier, “The only thing worse than bad memories is no memories at all.”

For those in attendance, Best Friends Forever was an opportunity to immerse themselves in the music that helped define their youth, and to reflect on how that music continues to resonate today.

🏈 Raiders Face Steelers as Aidan O’Connell Takes Over at Quarterback Amid Injury Woes

The Las Vegas Raiders' season has been full of ups and downs, and they’re only five games in. With a 2-3 record, the Raiders have experienced moments of both brilliance and frustration, from a stunning victory over the Baltimore Ravens to disappointing losses against teams like the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. As they prepare to face the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) this Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, the Raiders are dealing with multiple injuries, a quarterback change, and uncertainty around star wide receiver Davante Adams.

One of the major developments this season has been the Raiders’ switch at quarterback. Veteran Gardner Minshew started the season but will now be replaced by second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell, as the Raiders look to inject some energy into their offense. O’Connell, who impressed in limited action last season, is getting his chance to prove himself, though he faces a tough Steelers defense led by star linebacker T.J. Watt.

Despite the challenges, the Raiders have a chance to get back to .500 with a win on Sunday. However, they’ll need to overcome a hostile environment at Allegiant Stadium, where Steelers fans are expected to turn out in large numbers, just as they did during the teams' previous matchup last season.

A Season of Highs and Lows

The Raiders’ season has already seen plenty of twists. After their thrilling win in Baltimore on Sept. 15, Las Vegas returned home only to lose to the Panthers on Sept. 22. They bounced back with a victory over the Cleveland Browns but fell short against the struggling Denver Broncos on Oct. 6. The inconsistency, coupled with injuries to key players, has kept the team from finding any rhythm.

Defensive end Maxx Crosby, the heart of the Raiders’ defense, missed his first game ever due to an ankle injury, while newly signed free agent Christian Wilkins is on injured reserve with a foot injury. Star wide receiver Davante Adams, dealing with a hamstring issue, has now missed multiple games and appears to be on his way out, adding even more drama to the Raiders’ turbulent start.

The Raiders’ next challenge is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who come into Allegiant Stadium with a 3-2 record and a fanbase that is expected to pack the stands.

A Storied Rivalry

The Raiders and Steelers have one of the most storied rivalries in the NFL, with a history dating back to some of the most iconic moments in the sport. The two teams have met 32 times, with the Raiders holding a slight 17-15 edge in the all-time series. The rivalry peaked in the mid-1970s when they faced off in three consecutive AFC Championship games, with Pittsburgh winning two of the three.

Their most famous encounter came in the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoff, known as the “Immaculate Reception,” when Steelers running back Franco Harris made a miraculous catch to give Pittsburgh a last-second win, a moment still debated by fans today.

The two teams met again last season, with the Steelers winning 23-18 at Allegiant Stadium. Wide receiver Davante Adams had a standout performance in that game, catching two touchdowns and recording 172 yards, but the Raiders couldn’t capitalize, and their coach’s decision to kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter instead of going for a touchdown raised eyebrows.

Raiders’ Quarterback Change

The Raiders’ switch to Aidan O’Connell at quarterback is one of the major storylines heading into Sunday’s game. O’Connell showed promise during his rookie year, but he wasn’t able to win the starting job over Minshew during training camp. Now, with the offense struggling, O’Connell will get another chance to lead the team.

O’Connell is known for his arm strength and decisiveness in the pocket, but he will face a daunting challenge against a Steelers defense that thrives on applying pressure. The Raiders will also need to adjust without their top receiver, Adams, who is expected to miss his third straight game with a hamstring injury. This leaves the Raiders relying on players like rookie tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Tre Tucker to step up in the passing game.

Pittsburgh’s Offensive Strategy

The Raiders will have their hands full on defense as they prepare for both Steelers quarterbacks. Justin Fields has filled in admirably for Russell Wilson, who has yet to play this season due to a calf injury but may be close to returning. Fields, known for his ability to make plays with his legs, has become a dual-threat option for Pittsburgh, making him a difficult player to contain.

The Raiders’ defense will also need to focus on stopping running back Najee Harris, a powerful runner who thrives in the Steelers’ ground-and-pound approach. Tackling will be a major emphasis for Las Vegas after they missed several key tackles in their loss to Denver.

“(Harris) is a tough runner, and they’re going to run the ball,” said Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. “We’ve got to have a plan to tackle him effectively and be ready for a hard-hat game.”

Key Injuries

In addition to Adams’ absence, the Raiders are dealing with injuries to other key players, including defensive end Maxx Crosby, who is listed as limited due to an ankle injury. Tight end Michael Mayer is also out for personal reasons, and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is questionable with an ankle injury.

The Steelers, meanwhile, have several players listed as out or questionable, including linebackers Nick Herbig and Alex Highsmith and safety Damontae Kazee.

Prediction

The Raiders have a chance to get back on track, but it won’t be easy. With Adams out and a new quarterback at the helm, Las Vegas will have to overcome several obstacles to secure a win. The Steelers, led by a strong defense, are favored by three points, and the final score is projected to be 20-13 in favor of Pittsburgh.

😋 Zippy’s Announces Second Las Vegas Location, Set to Open in Summerlin South in 2025

Zippy’s, the iconic Hawaiian diner chain that captured the hearts of Las Vegas residents with its long-awaited debut last October, has announced plans to open a second location in the city. The beloved eatery, known for its classic comfort food like malasadas, chili over rice, and plate lunches, will soon be expanding its presence in the Las Vegas area.

The announcement was made on Thursday, exactly one year after the grand opening of Zippy’s first mainland location at 7095 Badura Avenue in southwest Las Vegas. That opening drew massive crowds, with Hawaiian dancers, members of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, a Hawaiian priest, and eager customers lining up in the early morning hours to be among the first to experience Zippy’s outside of Hawaii.

The new location is set to open in early 2025 at 4590 S. Hualapai Way, in the Summerlin South area, continuing Zippy’s expansion into the mainland U.S. As part of the preparation for the new store, Zippy’s has begun hiring for various positions, including cooks, utility workers, servers, cashiers, and managers.

Zippy’s Growth in Las Vegas

Zippy’s has been a Hawaiian institution since its founding in 1966, serving locals with its signature comfort food, including their famous chili, fried chicken, and saimin noodles. The opening of the first Zippy’s location in Las Vegas was a highly anticipated event, with plans initially announced in 2018. The original timeline aimed for a 2020 opening, but construction was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After resuming in the summer of 2022, the Badura location finally opened its doors in October 2023 to overwhelming success.

Since then, the Badura Zippy’s has been a hub for Hawaiian food lovers, regularly offering specials and expanding its menu with new items that weren’t available on opening day. The strong customer response and steady traffic at the southwest location prompted Zippy’s to pursue its next step in Vegas, establishing a second restaurant in the growing Summerlin South neighborhood.

Anticipation Builds for Summerlin South Location

The new Summerlin South Zippy’s is expected to draw just as much excitement as the Badura location, with many Hawaiian transplants and Las Vegas locals already eager for another spot to enjoy Zippy’s signature dishes. The Hualapai Way location will serve as a convenient option for customers in the northwest and west areas of Las Vegas, further cementing the diner chain’s place in the city’s food scene.

Zippy’s CEO shared the enthusiasm for the expansion, expressing gratitude to the Las Vegas community for their warm welcome and loyal patronage over the past year. The new location represents a significant step in Zippy’s plans to expand its footprint beyond Hawaii, and Las Vegas continues to be a key part of that strategy.

In addition to its focus on providing authentic Hawaiian food, Zippy’s has committed to creating job opportunities in the local community. The hiring process for the new restaurant is already underway, with a wide range of positions available, from kitchen staff to management roles. The company’s commitment to customer service and quality food is reflected in its approach to staffing, ensuring that the new location will offer the same level of excellence that patrons have come to expect.

A Taste of Hawaii in the Desert

For many Hawaiian transplants living in Las Vegas, Zippy’s offers a nostalgic connection to home. The diner’s menu, featuring staples like Spam musubi, loco moco, and their famous Zip Pacs, resonates with those who grew up on the islands. The restaurant has become a gathering spot for those craving a taste of Hawaii, and its arrival has introduced a new wave of Hawaiian food appreciation in Las Vegas.

The success of the Badura location and the announcement of the second store come at a time when Hawaiian culture and cuisine are growing in popularity on the mainland. With events like the annual Las Vegas Ho’olaule’a, a Hawaiian festival that celebrates island culture, and the increasing number of Hawaiian-themed businesses in the city, Zippy’s expansion is part of a larger trend of Hawaii’s influence spreading to the mainland.

Looking Ahead

As Zippy’s prepares for the grand opening of its Summerlin South location in 2025, excitement is already building among locals. The restaurant is expected to draw large crowds on opening day, similar to the Badura location, with food lovers eager to enjoy the chain’s signature dishes.

In the meantime, Zippy’s fans can continue to enjoy their favorite meals at the Badura Avenue location, which has seen strong demand since its opening. With frequent specials and new menu items being introduced, the restaurant has maintained its popularity and continued to attract a steady stream of customers.

As the opening date for the Summerlin South location approaches, Zippy’s is likely to release more details about its plans for the new restaurant, including potential new menu items or opening day festivities. For now, the announcement of the second Zippy’s location is yet another milestone in the diner’s expansion and a promising sign of more to come.

Trump in North Las Vegas: Latinos Are Critical to the Future of America

Former President Donald Trump addressed a North Las Vegas audience on Saturday, stating that he is winning over more Latino voters—something that, in his words, “nobody ever thought possible.” Speaking during a roundtable discussion at a warehouse hosted by Beauty Society, a local skincare manufacturer, Trump emphasized the growing support for his campaign among Hispanic voters and praised the community for its entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.

“It’s an incredible group of people. It’s an honor to have you on my side,” Trump said to the approximately 200 attendees, many of whom leapt to their feet and cheered upon his introduction.

The roundtable, attended by several local Hispanic business owners, union members, and Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown, focused on economic issues impacting the Latino community. The event also compared the economic policies of Trump’s administration to those of the Biden-Harris administration, with participants sharing stories of their financial struggles in recent years.

Latino Voter Outreach in Focus

The event comes as both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making concerted efforts to court Latino voters, a key demographic in the battleground state of Nevada. Latinos represent 1 in 5 registered voters in the Silver State, and their influence is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

Trump’s visit to North Las Vegas occurred just two days after Harris held her own event in the city, participating in a Univision town hall aimed at addressing the concerns of the Latino community. Harris’ campaign has focused on issues such as affordable housing, immigration, and job creation. Meanwhile, Trump has positioned himself as an advocate for reducing regulations, cutting taxes, and preventing illegal immigration—issues he believes resonate with Hispanic voters.

“It will be Latinos in Nevada who will determine who walks into the White House in January,” said Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar during a news conference for the Harris campaign in Las Vegas.

A recent poll by UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights organization, showed that Harris currently leads Trump among registered Latino voters in Nevada, with 57% favoring her compared to 34% for Trump. However, 10% of Latino voters remain undecided, a critical number that both campaigns are trying to sway.

Trump's Economic Message

Trump used Saturday’s event to highlight his past economic policies, which he claims significantly benefitted Hispanic Americans. He touted the economic successes of his administration, saying that under his leadership, Hispanic families saw record levels of homeownership and a reduction in poverty.

“Hispanic American poverty was the lowest it’s ever been, and we cut taxes and regulations for Hispanic-owned small businesses,” Trump said.

Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue, a prominent supporter of Trump, also spoke at the event, referring to Vice President Harris as “Que Mala” and accusing the Democratic Party of abandoning Latinos. Unanue voiced concerns about the rising costs his business is facing and emphasized the exploitation of Latinos through human trafficking.

A local business owner, Lydia, expressed her frustration with the current economic situation, describing how difficult it has become for her family under the Biden administration’s policies. “We’re on a Democratic diet right now, and I’m tired of being on that diet,” Lydia said during the roundtable, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Union Appeal

One key focus of the event was the issue of union support. Historically, unions have been a stronghold for Democratic candidates, but Trump has made efforts to appeal to working-class voters, including members of unions. During the roundtable, Trump argued that illegal immigration is taking away jobs from American workers, including union members.

Brian, a member of Teamsters Local 631, spoke at the event and praised Trump for his pro-union stance, stating that the economy was better under Trump’s administration. “They’re stealing your jobs,” Trump said, referring to illegal immigrants.

This focus on union support comes at a time when the national Teamsters organization has opted not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, despite their long history of backing Democratic nominees. Some local chapters, including in Nevada, have broken ranks and endorsed Vice President Harris.

Familiar Campaign Messages

Saturday’s appearance marked Trump’s sixth trip to Nevada this year, and many of his talking points were familiar to the audience. Trump repeated his criticisms of the Biden administration, particularly focusing on immigration, the economy, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also reiterated his proposal to eliminate taxes on tips, a policy he introduced during a rally in Las Vegas earlier this year. Harris has expressed support for a similar plan, combining it with a proposal to raise the minimum wage.

Absent from Trump’s remarks, however, were comments he made in Ohio about Haitian immigrants, which had previously drawn controversy.

In closing, Trump urged Nevadans to turn out for the 2024 election, emphasizing its importance. “Nov. 5 is going to go down as maybe the most important day, I hope,” Trump said. “It will be the most important day in the history of the country.”

Latino Immigrants Share Their Stories

Several attendees at the event shared personal stories of their experiences as immigrants. Linda, who immigrated from Nicaragua, spoke about the hard work her family has put in to support themselves. She expressed frustration with the Democratic Party, claiming that despite promises to help the Latino community, “they have done nothing.”

Iris, an immigrant from Ecuador, warned that nationals from other countries understand the importance of defending freedom because they have seen what happens when that freedom is lost.

Trump responded to their stories by reaffirming his commitment to legal immigration. “We’re gonna have a lot of people coming in, but they’re gonna come in legally,” he said.

The roundtable underscored Trump’s effort to build stronger ties with Latino voters in Nevada as both campaigns gear up for the critical 2024 election.
