⛳ Las Vegas Set for Shriners Children's Open at TPC Summerlin

Matt McCarty is riding high after capturing his first PGA Tour victory at the Black Desert Championship on Sunday, and now he’s looking to build on that success. On Monday, McCarty was added to the field for this week’s Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. This will be McCarty’s fourth PGA Tour start, following his breakout win in Utah.

Joining McCarty in the field is Henrik Norlander, who earned his spot with a strong performance at the Black Desert Championship, tying for eighth. His top-10 finish secured him entry into the Shriners tournament, one of the premier fall events on the PGA Tour calendar.

In addition to McCarty and Norlander, there was a reshuffling of the Shriners field on Monday, bringing several new faces into the mix. Las Vegas resident Norman Xiong, originally the first alternate, moved into the field after Max Greyserman withdrew from the tournament.

Four more golfers earned their spots in the tournament through a Monday qualifier held at Spanish Trail Country Club. PGA Tour veteran Lanto Griffin led the group with a sensational 9-under-par 62, securing his place after coming close to victory at last year’s Shriners Open, where he tied for 13th. Griffin will be hoping to improve on that performance this week.

Also making the cut through the qualifier were Morgan Hoffmann (63), Nicolo Galletti (63), and Neal Shipley (64). Hoffmann’s return to competitive golf has been closely followed since he left the tour in 2017 after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Phoenix-based Galletti, who has competed in a dozen events on the DP World Tour this year, will make his debut at the Shriners. Shipley, the low amateur at both the 2023 Masters and U.S. Open, won a six-way playoff to secure the final qualifying spot and is now focused on making his mark as a newly turned professional.

The Shriners Children’s Open, now in its 42nd year, promises a competitive field at TPC Summerlin. The tournament continues to be a highlight of the PGA Tour’s fall season, offering a chance for up-and-coming players like McCarty and seasoned veterans alike to shine.

🏒 Logan Thompson’s Journey Comes Full Circle as He Faces Golden Knights in First Game for Capitals

Logan Thompson’s journey to the NHL has been one of resilience and determination, making his upcoming game against the Vegas Golden Knights, the team that gave him his first shot, especially bittersweet. On Tuesday, Thompson will face his former team for the first time as the starting goaltender for the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.

Thompson, 27, started his career from the ground up. As an undrafted goaltender, he took an unconventional route through Canadian college hockey before signing with the Golden Knights in July 2020. He quickly made a name for himself, becoming the American Hockey League’s top goaltender in 2021. His hard work paid off in 2022-23 when he started a team-high 36 regular-season games and helped the Golden Knights on their path to winning the Stanley Cup. He also earned a spot in the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, proving he belonged at the top level.

Despite his success, Thompson’s journey with the Golden Knights came to an unexpected end. On June 29, the Knights traded Thompson to the Capitals for two third-round draft picks. The trade was tough for Thompson, who had always dreamed of being a Golden Knight for life. "I didn’t want to leave Vegas. I thought I was going to be a Golden Knight for life," Thompson said. However, after losing his starting job during last season's playoffs, he felt the time was right to seek a fresh opportunity as a number one goaltender elsewhere.

Thompson had been a key player for the Knights last season, with a 25-14-5 record, a .908 save percentage, and a 2.70 goals-against average. He was particularly strong down the stretch, helping Vegas secure a playoff spot by going 8-3-0 in March and April. However, in the first round of the playoffs, after posting a solid .921 save percentage and 2.35 goals-against average in the first four games against the Dallas Stars, Thompson was replaced by Adin Hill. Hill excelled in the final games, and the Knights eventually lost in a seven-game series. This shift in the goaltending lineup led Thompson to request a trade during the offseason, as he no longer saw a clear future for himself in Vegas.

Though he leaves behind fond memories of his time with the Golden Knights, Thompson is ready to turn the page in Washington. His familiarity with Capitals goalie coach Scott Murray, whom he met during Washington’s development camp in 2019, has made his transition smoother. "I definitely get more work, more video here," Thompson said. "You’re never perfect as a goaltender, and I’m able to work on areas of the game that led to getting scored on, which I’m trying to take out of my game."

Thompson will be making his Capitals debut with a heavy heart, as he recently missed four days of practice following a family tragedy. He’s also making the switch to jersey number 48, a nod to his youth hockey days when, after being passed over for a team, the only available numbers were 1, 18, and 48. "I think that’s kind of been the story—that no one wanted me growing up. So, I’m going to stick with that number," Thompson said.

As Thompson prepares to take on his former team, he does so with mixed emotions but plenty of motivation. “It’s definitely going to be weird seeing a Golden Knights jersey on the other side,” Thompson said, but he’s eager for this new chapter in his career.

🎬 Warner Bros. and Sony Compete for Film Studio Projects in Las Vegas, Promising Thousands of Jobs

A newly released economic impact study highlights the potential benefits of building a major film and TV studio in Nevada, suggesting that a single studio project could create over 16,000 jobs and contribute approximately $1.2 billion to the state’s economy. Warner Bros. Discovery, which is proposing to build a 34-acre campus called "Warner Bros. Studios Nevada" in partnership with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), plans to use roughly $1.4 billion in proposed film tax credits over 15 years to support the project, according to the report.

The economic impact analysis, conducted by consulting firms Nordicity and Saffery, outlines the significant contribution the studio could make, including more than 1,000 construction jobs and long-term employment opportunities in areas such as media production, technology, and tourism.

Warner Bros. Discovery is not alone in vying for these incentives. Sony Entertainment, in collaboration with the Howard Hughes Corporation, has proposed a competing project for a 31-acre studio complex in southwest Las Vegas. Sony’s project, according to a fiscal impact report by consulting firm PFM, could generate $2.8 billion annually in economic output and create around 15,000 jobs. Like Warner Bros., Sony is seeking a portion of the expanded tax credits to build its facility.

Both proposals are tied to expected legislation in the Nevada Legislature’s upcoming session. State Sen. Roberta Lange, D-Las Vegas, plans to introduce a bill that would allocate up to $95 million in annual film tax credits over the next 15 years. Studios would need to complete significant infrastructure work before being eligible for the credits. Currently, the state offers $10 million annually in film tax credits, meaning Warner Bros. and Sony could be competing for a share of the expanded funding if the bill passes.

The Warner Bros. project, which is aligned with the Senate’s draft bill, plans to invest heavily in workforce training programs as part of its long-term commitment to Nevada. A key component of the legislation is to grow the local film industry workforce, and Warner Bros. intends to implement a workforce and education initiative called “Crew HQ” within the first three years. The studio expects to spend at least $500 million on content in its first three years, ramping up to $667 million annually in subsequent years.

Sony's studio complex, supported by the Assembly’s version of the bill, would be located near the 215 Beltway and Town Center Drive, a site that has already received zoning approval. The project is expected to generate significant tax revenue for local and state governments, with $304 million returning to the state from $715 million in total tax contributions.

Both projects are seen as long-term investments in Southern Nevada’s creative economy, potentially transforming the region into a production hub for film and television. With studio tours and attractions similar to Warner Bros.'s existing properties in Burbank, the United Kingdom, and Tokyo, the new facilities could also add a tourism component, extending visitors' stays in Las Vegas.

The Nevada Legislature’s 2025 session will play a crucial role in determining which of these projects move forward. Warner Bros. Chief Operating Officer Simon Robinson emphasized that the studio's project is not merely a property development but a significant investment in the state’s creative arts industry. "This is really us as a company putting roots down and becoming part of the community," Robinson said. Both Warner Bros. and Sony will need to navigate the legislative process as they push for tax credits to support their ambitious studio projects.

🏠 Las Vegas Faces Housing Crunch as Wealthy Californians Outbid Local Buyers

A recent study conducted by UNLV reveals that Californians moving to Nevada earn significantly more than long-time Nevada residents, further intensifying the housing affordability crisis in the state. According to the study, Californians who relocate to Nevada make approximately 32.7 percent more on average than residents who have not moved, giving them a major advantage in the housing market.

Nicholas Irwin, the study’s author and research director at UNLV’s Lied Center for Real Estate, stated that California transplants have a clear purchasing power edge over local Nevadans. "At a state level, California is the largest state from which new Nevada residents originate, with two out of every five new residents coming from our western neighbor," Irwin said. Between 2020 and 2023, nearly 158,000 Californians moved to Nevada, representing 43 percent of the state's new residents during that period, according to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

The UNLV study, which utilized IRS tax return data, found that the average income of a Californian moving to Nevada is 93.1 percent higher than an in-state resident who bought a home in the same year. This significant income disparity gives Californians a competitive advantage in Nevada’s real estate market, allowing them to outbid local buyers more easily, which exacerbates Nevada’s already strained housing market.

With the median home price in Las Vegas currently hovering around $433,975, Nevada residents find themselves at a disadvantage compared to Californians moving from areas like Los Angeles, where the average home price is close to $1 million. The income disparity between the two states is stark as well—the median Nevada household income stands at $76,364, while the median household income in California is $91,905.

Las Vegas is already experiencing a housing crisis, with home prices nearing record highs last seen in 2022. This problem is compounded by a lack of land available for development. The federal government controls 88 percent of land in Clark County, making it difficult to release new land for housing.

Irwin also noted that the high interest rates seen today are keeping many current homeowners from moving, as many are locked into low-interest mortgages from earlier in the pandemic. "We have a lot of people who would like to move but can’t because they would end up paying an extra $1,000 a month. Nobody wants to give up a 2.5 percent interest rate for a 6.5 percent rate," he explained.

Las Vegas has seen a surge in new listings on the housing market, leading the country in this metric, but elevated home prices and high interest rates have resulted in slower sales. Many homes are now sitting without offers, as affordability issues continue to plague both new and existing residents.
