๐Ÿ…ฟ Downtown Las Vegas Parking Tips: From Free Street Spots to Casino Validations

Visitors to Las Vegas are often struck by the contrast between parking options on the Strip and downtown. Historically, many casinos on the Strip offered free parking as a way to attract visitors, making it an appealing stop for those driving around town. However, over the years, that amenity has become less common, with more properties introducing parking fees. In contrast, downtown Las Vegas has always had more limited space, with compact city blocks, and relies more on metered street parking and ticketed garages.

Despite the trend toward paid parking, savvy travelers can still find budget-friendly spots if they know where to look. For those headed to Fremont Street, there are a few strategies for saving on parking costs, from finding free street parking to getting validation from participating casinos. Here's a guide to parking downtown:

Street Parking

In downtown Las Vegas, most street parking is metered, controlled by a pay-by-plate system. The rates vary depending on the location, but thereโ€™s an opportunity to find free parking for those willing to walk a little. Free street parking becomes available starting east of 9th Street, around local landmarks like Atomic Liquors. The further you venture away from the heart of Fremont Street, the more likely you are to find a free spot. Perpendicular streets that run north and south of Fremont may also offer open spaces, though availability can depend on the time of day and local events.

While this option may not be ideal for those looking to stay close to the action, budget-conscious drivers who donโ€™t mind a short walk can take advantage of these free spots. However, itโ€™s essential to check for posted signs indicating time limits or restrictions, as some areas have stricter parking rules or are reserved for residents.

Validated Parking

For those seeking more convenience or who want to stay close to Fremont Street, many downtown casinos offer validated parking, allowing drivers to park for free or at a discounted rate. This option is particularly appealing to visitors planning to enjoy a meal or gamble at one of the hotels.

Several properties offer validation with specific conditions:

  • Four Queens, Binionโ€™s, Main Street Station, The California, and The Plaza all provide free or discounted parking for guests who meet certain criteria, such as dining at a restaurant or achieving a certain level in the playerโ€™s club.

  • The Plaza even offers parking validation for those attending bingo sessions, a popular event for both locals and tourists.

These validated options allow visitors to park in more convenient locations while enjoying a meal or gambling, making it an easy way to save a few dollars during a day trip to Fremont Street.

General Parking Tips

While parking downtown can be more challenging than on the Strip, planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary expenses. Many of the metered parking spots and paid garages can fill up quickly, especially during weekends or special events, so arriving early or considering off-peak hours may increase your chances of finding a spot. Additionally, if you plan to spend a significant amount of time at a specific property, calling ahead or checking their website for updated parking validation policies can help you understand the requirements to qualify for free parking.

Overall, downtown Las Vegas offers a mix of paid and free parking options that cater to a variety of visitors. Whether youโ€™re willing to walk a bit or prefer the convenience of parking close to Fremont Street with validation, there are ways to save on parking and enjoy your time downtown without breaking the bank.

Parking Rates and Locations

  • Metered street parking: Rates vary but generally range from $1 to $2 per hour. Meters are enforced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

  • Parking garages: Many downtown hotels and casinos offer garages with varying rates. The average ranges from $5 to $20, but validation can offset the cost.

  • Free street parking: Available east of 9th Street and on nearby side streets, typically first come, first served.

By being strategic, visitors to downtown Las Vegas can find parking options that fit their budget, whether through a short walk or taking advantage of validation perks.

๐Ÿ’ Golden Knights' Dynamic Defense Duo: Theodore and Pietrangelo Lead the Charge

The pairing of Shea Theodore and Alex Pietrangelo, once used sparingly as the Golden Knights' secret weapon for offensive bursts, has now emerged as the team's top defense duo. The surprise move to pair the two at the start of training camp has paid off so far, helping the Golden Knights to a 3-1-0 start as they head into Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Both Theodore and Pietrangelo have contributed offensively, with Theodore tallying five points, the second-highest among NHL defensemen, and Pietrangelo adding three assists in the first four games. However, their standout performance has come in the defensive zone, where theyโ€™ve played nearly 60 minutes of five-on-five time together, helping the team outscore opponents 5-3 during those stretches.

Coach Bruce Cassidy has praised their defensive synchronization, particularly their work in disrupting plays and moving the puck out of the defensive zone. Their ability to kill plays below the goal line was exemplified in a recent game against the St. Louis Blues, where their teamwork led to a goal by Ivan Barbashev.

Despite being outshot with the duo on the ice, Cassidy credits their defensive execution with limiting scoring chances. The chemistry between the two, developed over time, has allowed them to instinctively read each otherโ€™s movements and make quick decisions on when to push up the ice or stay back.

The pairing has also opened up new possibilities for the Golden Knightsโ€™ blue line. Theodoreโ€™s decision to switch to his natural left side has allowed Nic Hague to play on the right side for the first time since his junior hockey days, creating more balance across the defensive lineup.

Theodore and Pietrangelo, averaging around 21 minutes of ice time per game, are key to the Knightsโ€™ success as they continue to build on their early-season momentum.

๐ŸŸ New Aโ€™s Stadium and Ballyโ€™s Resort to Bring Major Development to Las Vegas Strip

Plans have been unveiled for Ballyโ€™s Corp.โ€™s integrated resort and the Oakland Athletics' new Las Vegas ballpark, offering a glimpse of how the $1.5 billion project will take shape on the former Tropicana site. The proposed development will span 35 acres and include a state-of-the-art ballpark, hotel towers, a casino, and extensive amenities, with phased construction planned over several years.

The site renderings submitted to Clark County reveal a 33,000-capacity ballpark at the center-rear of the site, surrounded by three hotel towers at the northeast and southwest corners, each rising 495 feet and offering a combined 3,005 rooms. The Aโ€™s stadium will stand 290 feet tall and feature 30,000 seats with room for an additional 3,000 standing-room-only spaces. The ballpark will also house 60,000 square feet of office space for the team.

Parking will be a critical element of the design, with two parking garages and a surface lot providing 2,500 spaces onsite. However, for sold-out events, which are expected to draw over 30,000 fans, an additional 4,400 parking spaces will be required offsite. The plans estimate 9,328 attendees will walk from surrounding parking structures, including lots at nearby MGM Resorts properties and Planet Hollywood. Other transportation options will include the Vegas Loop, shuttle buses, taxis, and ridesharing services.

The broader integrated resort will include a 90,000-square-foot casino, over 110,000 square feet of meeting space, a dayclub, retail outlets, and dining options. The casino will feature 1,500 slot machines, 75 table games, a poker room, and a 12,000-square-foot sportsbook. The project will be constructed in phases, starting with the ballpark and parking garages, followed by the hotel towers and additional resort amenities.

The Oakland Aโ€™s plan to begin construction on the stadium in the second quarter of 2024, targeting completion by the 2028 season. Ballyโ€™s has not yet provided a timeline for when construction on its resort portion will begin, but officials remain confident that both projects will come to fruition.

โœˆ New Nonstop Flights Between Las Vegas and Washington D.C. Set for Takeoff Pending Final Approval

The U.S. Department of Transportation has given preliminary approval to Southwest Airlines' bid to launch nonstop, round-trip flights between Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C. Southwest, the largest carrier at Harry Reid, applied for the route in June and received support from local officials and businesses, who lobbied for the flight's approval to boost tourism and connectivity.

While the approval is still tentative, it marks the first step in the process. Once fully approved, Southwest will operate the route using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which can seat up to 175 passengers. Currently, American Airlines is the only carrier offering daily nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Washington's Reagan National Airport. Southwest aims to introduce competitive fares and more travel options.

The opportunity for this new route emerged when Congress passed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which expanded the number of exemptions to Reagan Nationalโ€™s 1,250-mile perimeter rule, allowing five new round-trip flights beyond the limit.

Local politicians applauded the decision. Senator Jacky Rosen and Congresswoman Dina Titus, both from Nevada, praised the development, highlighting the positive impact the new route would have on Southern Nevadaโ€™s tourism and convention sectors, which are vital to the local economy.

Although the exact start date for the service remains unclear, Southwest is excited to offer its signature hospitality and affordable fares once the approval is finalized.
