Discover Nevada’s Hidden Gems: The State with the Most Hot Springs in the U.S.

Nevada, the driest state in the U.S., is surprisingly home to the highest number of natural hot springs in the country, boasting over 300. These springs offer a unique glimpse into the state’s hidden groundwater aquifers, which sustain both wildlife and human visitors. Some hot springs have become popular tourist spots, while others are tucked away, known only to locals seeking a quiet retreat. The Nevada Division of Tourism highlights the variety and abundance of these springs, ranging from natural pools to creative setups like vintage bathtubs or "cowboy tubs," which are upcycled cattle troughs filled with naturally warm spring water.

Hot Springs: A Winter Getaway

The hot springs provide an inviting escape from Southern Nevada’s cold winter months, offering warm waters perfect for relaxation. However, visitors should be cautious, as some springs are closed during the summer due to bacteria or seasonal maintenance.

For those interested in exploring Nevada’s thermal waters, here are a few notable hot springs:

1. Ringbolt (Arizona) Hot Springs

Located just across the Arizona border within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Ringbolt Hot Springs — also known as Arizona Hot Springs — is a popular destination for Las Vegans. The hot springs are accessed via a moderately challenging 5-mile hike, offering hikers stunning views along the way. Groundwater is discharged through faults in the earth at a rate of 30 to 50 gallons per minute, with temperatures ranging between 111 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Park Service.

Visitors can park off U.S. Highway 93 before mile marker 4, south of Hoover Dam, to begin the trail. The effort of the hike is rewarded with a relaxing soak in nature’s thermal waters.

2. Gold Strike Hot Springs

Also within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, but on the Nevada side, Gold Strike Hot Springs offers another challenging yet rewarding adventure. The 2.5-mile trail requires navigating steep, rocky terrain and using fixed ropes to make the 600-foot descent into the canyon. Once at the bottom, visitors find hot spring pools, grottos, and small waterfalls, as well as access to the Colorado River. For thrill-seekers, the area also provides cliff-jumping opportunities.

The trail begins just before the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge on U.S. Highway 93, with a free parking lot available at the start.

3. Tecopa Hot Springs

Situated on the edge of Death Valley National Park in Tecopa, California, these hot springs are about a two-hour drive from Las Vegas. The Tecopa area offers several ways to experience its desert hot springs, primarily through resorts and campgrounds.

  • Delight’s Hot Springs Resort features two pools fed directly by the springs, as well as private indoor tubs with temperatures between 98 and 104 degrees. The resort offers day passes for non-overnight guests at $35 per person.

  • Tecopa Hot Springs Campground also provides spring-fed pools and the option to book private soaking tubs, making it an ideal spot for both campers and day visitors.

4. Spencer Hot Springs

A bit off the beaten path, Spencer Hot Springs is located near Austin, Nevada, in the Big Smoky Valley, roughly 4.5 hours from Las Vegas. The springs are surrounded by the vast landscape of the Great Basin, making it a picturesque spot for those willing to make the journey.

At Spencer Hot Springs, visitors can soak in classic "cowboy tubs" — two cattle troughs filled with naturally heated spring water — as well as an additional soaking pool. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the area offers first-come, first-served camping spots. Campers must set up at least 100 feet away from the water, ensuring the springs remain accessible to everyone.

5. Fish Lake Valley Hot Springs

In Esmeralda County, near the California border, Fish Lake Valley Hot Springs is another remote but rewarding hot spring experience. Located along a dirt road near the small town of Dyer and the city of Tonopah, this site features a long concrete tub that maintains a temperature of about 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fish Lake Valley is known for its tranquil environment and breathtaking night skies, making it an ideal spot for stargazing. The area also has natural ponds filled with goldfish and other wildlife, providing a serene, nature-filled retreat.

Exploring Nevada’s Hot Springs Further

Nevada’s diverse hot spring offerings extend beyond Southern Nevada. For those interested in exploring more springs, including those near Reno or Carson City, the Nevada Division of Tourism provides a comprehensive guide. Visitors can access detailed information on various hot springs around the state by visiting Travel Nevada's hot springs page.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Nevada's Hot Springs Abundance: The state has over 300 hot springs, more than any other in the U.S.

  • Seasonal Accessibility: Some springs close in summer due to bacteria or seasonal maintenance.

  • Variety of Experiences: Options range from natural pools and rustic cowboy tubs to resort-style accommodations.

  • Remote Adventures: Some springs, like Spencer and Fish Lake Valley, offer more remote and off-grid experiences for adventurers.

🏒 Kaedan Korczak Steps Up in Season Debut as Golden Knights Demonstrate Depth

Kaedan Korczak is learning to navigate the ups and downs of being an NHL defenseman, particularly the challenge of being a "healthy scratch." The 23-year-old Golden Knights player has to remain prepared, waiting for his chance to play and making the most of it when the opportunity arises. On Tuesday, Korczak stepped up when defenseman Shea Theodore was sidelined due to illness, and he made an impact in his season debut. He recorded an assist during his 17:22 on the ice in the Golden Knights' 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Staying Ready for the Opportunity

Now a full-time NHL player, Korczak no longer has the option of being sent to the AHL without passing through waivers, meaning he would likely be claimed by another team if the Golden Knights tried to send him down. This change in his status means he must adapt to a “stay-ready” mindset. Korczak acknowledged that it’s part of being a professional player at this stage of his career, stating, “It’s part of the business now for where I am in my career. I just got to keep going.”

Korczak received the call to play at around 4:50 p.m. on game day, a significant shift from his usual routine. Describing himself as a “big napper,” Korczak usually gets a solid rest before games but didn’t have that luxury this time. Nervous that this might affect his performance, he downed a large coffee on his way to T-Mobile Arena, which was enough to get him ready for action.

A Strong Partnership with McNabb

Korczak was paired with veteran defenseman Brayden McNabb on Tuesday, and the duo proved solid. They were outshot 8-7 while on the ice but managed to outscore the Kings 1-0. Additionally, the Knights had an expected goals advantage of 1.26-0.81 with them on the ice, indicating their effectiveness.

Korczak and McNabb have a history of working well together. Last season, when Korczak filled in during Theodore's three-month absence due to an upper-body injury, they helped the team outscore opponents 13-5 and outshot teams 128-114 when they played together. Korczak noted that playing alongside McNabb gives him confidence, adding, “Obviously playing with (McNabb) is really easy. I have lots of confidence playing with him.”

Korczak’s NHL Progress

Tuesday marked Korczak’s 38th career NHL game, and his stats continue to show promise. He has accumulated 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) and boasts a plus-11 rating at five-on-five. While his numbers make a strong case for a consistent lineup spot, the current depth chart limits his playing time. Theodore, who participated in an optional practice on Wednesday, is expected to return for the Knights’ game against the Ottawa Senators on Friday, likely sending Korczak back to the press box.

With eight defensemen on their roster, the Golden Knights use Korczak and Ben Hutton as their extra options. Hutton, 31, is an experienced player with 509 NHL games under his belt and has already proven his value as a flexible, ready-to-go option when needed. While Hutton is accustomed to the role, it’s a different challenge for a young player like Korczak, who is eager to solidify his position as a regular on the team.

Maintaining Readiness and Developing Skills

The Knights’ coaching staff emphasizes the importance of staying sharp, especially for players like Korczak who may not get daily game time. Coach Bruce Cassidy pointed out that extra skaters need to work harder in practice because they don’t have the luxury of gradually easing into the lineup. “Other teams don’t care. They’re coming at you 100 miles an hour,” Cassidy remarked, highlighting the need for physical and mental preparation.

Cassidy also noted that he and the coaching staff, particularly assistant coach John Stevens, put extra focus on drills and net-front practice sessions for Korczak and Hutton to ensure they stay in game shape. Cassidy drew from his own playing experience, joking, “As a player, I was in that spot a little over 100 years ago. It’s hard for a coach to be on you, especially for a young player.”

Cassidy explained that it’s not just about flipping a switch when it’s time to play; staying mentally and physically prepared is crucial. “That’s the challenge for the younger guys,” he said. “It’s why a lot of teams don’t like having a younger guy in that position. But at the end of the day, (Korczak) requires waivers, and he’s a valuable piece. There’s a little bit of that trade-off that he’s going to have to meet us halfway with the coaching piece versus his mental preparation every day.”

The Future Looks Bright for Korczak

Despite the challenges, the Golden Knights have confidence in Korczak’s potential. The team signed him to a two-year, $1.65 million contract on July 1, with general manager Kelly McCrimmon affirming that Korczak is ready to become a regular NHL player. For now, however, he must remain patient and seize opportunities like Tuesday’s performance to prove his value and readiness.

Coach Cassidy was pleased with Korczak’s play against the Kings, stating, “I thought (Korczak) played well as the game went along. Good for us to have depth there.” The Knights recognize that having a capable young defenseman like Korczak in their system is an asset, and performances like these help him build his case for a consistent spot in the lineup.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Korczak’s Development: The young defenseman is adjusting to the role of an NHL regular but must stay ready as the team’s depth chart limits his playing time.

  • Effective Partnership: Korczak has a strong on-ice connection with Brayden McNabb, providing stability when he steps into the lineup.

  • Staying Sharp: Extra skaters must remain physically and mentally prepared, with coaches emphasizing intense practice sessions.

  • Future Outlook: The Knights are invested in Korczak’s future, believing he has the potential to secure a regular role as he continues to grow.

🎰 Las Vegas Sands Sees Earnings Dip, Expands Macao and Singapore Projects with $2.51B Credit Line

Las Vegas Sands Corp. reported a profitable third quarter on Wednesday, though the results showed a decline compared to the same period last year. Despite the decrease, the company emphasized its commitment to investing heavily in its international resorts in Macao and Singapore. The Las Vegas-based firm, which no longer operates U.S. properties, also revealed a new $2.51 billion credit agreement intended to support ongoing development projects in Macao.

Financial Overview

For the third quarter ending September 30, Las Vegas Sands posted a net income of $353 million, or 38 cents per share, on revenue of $2.68 billion. This marked a 21.4% decline from the $449 million, or 50 cents per share, on revenue of $2.8 billion recorded in the third quarter of 2023. The company will also pay a 20-cent dividend to shareholders in November. While revenue and profit were down from the previous year, the company noted encouraging signs, especially from its Macao operations.

Investment in Macao and Singapore

Las Vegas Sands remains focused on its two major Asian markets, Macao and Singapore. Following a strong performance during Golden Week—a key holiday period in China—executives reaffirmed their commitment to investing in these regions. The company has embarked on a $3.4 billion renovation and refurbishment program in Macao. The initiative includes developing a garden-themed attraction at its Londoner property, as well as enhancements to convention and entertainment facilities. Sands is also investing in food and beverage offerings and expanding health and wellness amenities across the city.

In Singapore, Sands is enhancing its Marina Bay Sands property, one of the city-state’s most iconic resorts. The company recently invested $1.75 billion to upgrade hotel rooms and is planning to construct a 15,000-seat arena and a new hotel tower, further solidifying its presence in the region.

New Credit Line and Strategic Focus

Las Vegas Sands’ $2.51 billion credit line, outlined in a recent SEC filing, will remain available through September 24, 2029. This facility provides the company with the flexibility to finance new developments or pay down existing debt, aligning with its strategic focus on expanding and upgrading its international operations. Sands committed $3.5 billion to develop non-gaming amenities in Macao as part of its license renewal process in the Chinese gambling hub.

While Macao and Singapore are currently the main focus, Sands executives have indicated they are exploring other opportunities. Investors asked if the company had any plans to join rivals Wynn Resorts Ltd. and MGM Resorts International in developing a resort in the United Arab Emirates. Sands President and COO Patrick Dumont did not make any specific commitments but acknowledged that the company remains open to new markets, stating, “I think it’s a market that we’ll continue to study and look at, and we’ll see how it goes.”

New York Expansion Bid

Las Vegas Sands is also pursuing a gaming license in downstate New York. CEO Rob Goldstein expressed continued interest but noted that delays in the state’s licensing process have created uncertainty. The company plans to transform a Long Island parcel, formerly the site of the New York Islanders hockey arena, into an integrated resort featuring a casino. However, Goldstein revealed that the awarding of licenses is now expected to be delayed until spring 2025, despite initial plans to issue three licenses this year.

The rise of online gambling, particularly in states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, is another factor the company is closely monitoring. Goldstein acknowledged that online gaming revenue now exceeds that of land-based casinos in New Jersey, which may influence how applicants, including Sands, approach capital investments for physical casinos in New York. “The only concern I have these days is the ongoing strength of online gambling, which you can’t ignore what’s happening in New Jersey and in Pennsylvania and in Michigan,” he stated, indicating that these trends could reshape the company’s strategy.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Q3 Earnings Report: Las Vegas Sands posted $353 million in net income on $2.68 billion in revenue, a decrease from the previous year.

  • Focus on Asian Markets: The company is investing $3.4 billion in Macao and $1.75 billion in Singapore to enhance its resorts.

  • New Credit Line: Sands secured a $2.51 billion credit agreement for developments, available through 2029.

  • Exploration of UAE Market: While no commitments were made, Sands remains open to exploring new investment opportunities outside its current markets.

  • New York Casino Bid Delays: The process for obtaining a gaming license in downstate New York has been delayed to spring 2025, with online gaming trends influencing the market.
