🗳️ Election Officials Brace for Legal Battles in Nevada Amid Rising Misinformation
In Nevada, election officials and watchdog organizations are bracing for potential legal challenges after the upcoming November 5 election, following the contentious 2020 election when Republicans filed multiple lawsuits alleging widespread voter fraud. Despite a thorough investigation by the then-Republican Secretary of State and subsequent court dismissals of fraud claims, experts expect similar challenges this election cycle, as partisan groups continue to raise concerns over election integrity.
Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, aware of Nevada’s swing-state status, has bolstered preparations, expecting both valid and frivolous challenges. “We’ve been preparing,” Aguilar said. “It’s part of the process.” Aguilar’s office has launched the Election Integrity Violation Reports initiative, a system to address claims in real time, rather than after Election Day, allowing for prompt investigation of election-related concerns. Additionally, Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel R. Schiess will oversee voter rights and election fraud issues in Nevada, with FBI agents on standby to respond to any potential disruptions.
Larry Norden of the Brennan Center for Justice warns that well-funded, coordinated groups denying election results are more organized now than in 2020. However, strict legal deadlines are in place to limit prolonged disputes; by December 11, each state’s governor must certify presidential election results, and state electors will finalize the electoral vote by December 17, effectively ending challenges.
Political parties and legal groups are also ramping up. The Republican National Committee (RNC) has recruited 200,000 volunteer poll watchers nationwide and has set up a rapid-response hotline in Nevada to handle issues as they arise. The RNC has already filed pre-election lawsuits in Nevada, aiming to limit the counting of mail-in ballots received after Election Day. While courts dismissed or denied preliminary injunctions for these suits, the RNC has appealed. The Nevada ACLU is actively working to protect ballot access, particularly for underrepresented groups, and has already filed a lawsuit to ensure robust poll observation and jail voting rights. ACLU attorney Sadmira Ramic argues these lawsuits could disenfranchise voters, creating barriers rather than ensuring security.
Experts agree that a clear post-election process is essential to prevent misinformation, including legitimate recounts and audits. Wendy Weiser of the Brennan Center emphasized that these post-election measures allow for transparency without undermining election legitimacy. However, some challenges, such as those spreading conspiracy theories, aim to cast doubt on outcomes and create chaos.
The Democracy Defense Project, a bipartisan group led by former Nevada officials, is also combating misinformation. Former Governor Brian Sandoval, a Republican, and former Democratic Speaker Richard Perkins are educating Nevadans about election security, dispelling myths about voting machine connectivity and ballot handling. Sandoval and Aguilar both assert that Nevada’s systems are secure, noting that 13 of Nevada’s 15 elected clerks are Republicans, emphasizing bipartisan oversight.
With a heightened level of organization and awareness, Nevada’s election officials, watchdog groups, and the Democracy Defense Project are working to build public confidence in the electoral process. “Nevada runs fair elections,” Aguilar said, acknowledging the hard work of the state’s clerks and registrars to ensure a secure and credible voting experience.
🏒 Karlsson Returns as Golden Knights Extend Home Streak with 7-3 Win Over Sharks
The Vegas Golden Knights dominated the San Jose Sharks with a 7-3 victory on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, using an explosive first period to secure their sixth straight home win. Coach Bruce Cassidy opted for an unusual morning skate before the game—a rare move on the second leg of a back-to-back—to shake off what he and the team called an “awful” performance the night before, despite a win over Ottawa.
The decision paid off immediately, as the Knights (6-2-1) blitzed the Sharks with three goals in the first period, outshooting them 22-4. Left wing Tanner Pearson and center Jack Eichel scored 1:50 apart, followed by Brett Howden, who tallied his first of two goals in the game. By the end of the first period, the Knights had already built an insurmountable lead.
“That was probably our best period of the season,” Cassidy said.
Vegas continued to pile on, with captain Mark Stone contributing a goal and two assists, and center William Karlsson scoring in his season debut after returning from an injury that kept him sidelined for eight games. Goaltender Ilya Samsonov, who needed the morning practice for conditioning, stopped 23 of 26 shots from the Sharks (0-7-2), who remain winless on the season.
The victory highlighted the Knights’ offensive firepower on home ice, where they’ve now scored at least five goals in four of their six home games, with 19 goals scored in the past three games alone.
Key Takeaways from the Game:
Karlsson Returns in Style
William Karlsson, one of the Golden Knights' original “Misfits,” made an immediate impact in his first game since Game 7 of last season’s playoff series against Dallas. He scored a short-handed goal and assisted on Pearson’s first-period goal, showing no signs of rust from his undisclosed injury. Karlsson’s return also boosts Vegas’ defensive strength at center, which has faced some inconsistencies this season.Pietrangelo’s Playmaking Streak
Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo continued his assist streak with two more helpers, bringing his total to eight assists over the past three games. Pietrangelo’s season total now sits at 11 assists, all coming without a goal. He has remained effective regardless of his defensive partner, rotating between Shea Theodore and Noah Hanifin, and currently holds a plus-10 rating in five-on-five play. With this momentum, Pietrangelo is on track for one of his best offensive seasons yet.Hertl Shines Against Former Team
Center Tomas Hertl extended his point streak to three games with two assists in his first game against his former team, the Sharks. Hertl, who was traded to the Knights last season, contributed significantly against San Jose, a team where he spent over 11 years and tallied 484 points. Though he started this season slowly, Hertl has now recorded seven points (three goals, four assists) in the current homestand.
The Knights, who improved to 6-2-1, will wrap up their four-game homestand on Monday, facing the Calgary Flames at 7 p.m., hoping to extend their unbeaten streak on home ice.

🎰 DOJ Joins Class-Action Alleging Collusion in Las Vegas Hotel Room Pricing
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has intervened in a class-action lawsuit against several major Las Vegas casino hotel operators, supporting hotel customers who allege that these companies colluded to artificially inflate room rates by using shared pricing algorithms. The DOJ’s amicus brief, filed Thursday with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, underscores the federal government’s stance that such coordinated use of algorithms to set prices poses a threat to market competition and could establish a significant antitrust precedent.
The lawsuit, initially filed in 2023, targets high-profile companies including Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Treasure Island, Blackstone (formerly of The Cosmopolitan), JC Hospitality (operator of the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas), and Cendyn Group, the software firm that developed the pricing tool. Cendyn’s subsidiary, Rainmaker Group, based in Georgia, created the specific program allegedly used by these casino-hotels to share and adjust room pricing. Plaintiffs argue that this coordinated use of software led to inflated room rates across Las Vegas by altering the algorithm to suggest higher baseline prices.
Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Miranda Du dismissed the complaint, finding the claims insufficiently plausible, partly because hotel operators are not bound to follow the algorithm’s recommendations. However, the DOJ’s filing contends that whether or not operators strictly adhered to these suggested rates is irrelevant. The DOJ argues that if competitors agree to use a common pricing tool to generate “default” or initial price points, such coordination constitutes a per se violation of antitrust law, regardless of final prices.
The DOJ’s position reflects growing concerns over the role of algorithmic pricing in enabling covert price-fixing, especially in concentrated industries like hospitality. According to the DOJ, if algorithms are used collaboratively among competitors to determine initial price points, it could bypass traditional methods of price-fixing while still impacting the market.
The class-action lawsuit in Las Vegas is not an isolated case; similar allegations have been raised in Atlantic City. In that lawsuit, also involving Caesars Entertainment and Cendyn, as well as MGM Resorts International and Hard Rock International, the claims were dismissed last month. Plaintiffs in both cases are considering appeals, setting up potential landmark decisions on the legality of algorithmic price-setting agreements in the hotel industry.
If the appeals court sides with the plaintiffs, it could lead to stricter scrutiny of algorithmic pricing practices in industries where a few players dominate the market. For the DOJ, this case could establish a key legal precedent in an era where technology and data-sharing are reshaping business practices in potentially anticompetitive ways.
The Ninth Circuit Court’s decision, anticipated in the coming months, will determine whether the Las Vegas case proceeds, possibly setting the stage for broader federal scrutiny of how companies use technology to set prices.
