Trump, Harris Make Last Appeals in Nevada as Election Day Nears

On Thursday, former President Donald Trump rallied nearly 6,000 supporters in Henderson, Nevada, urging them to vote in the Nov. 5 election. With Nevada's six electoral votes at stake, both parties have made frequent stops in the state. Trump’s address focused on immigration, economic policy, and his critiques of the current administration, while Vice President Kamala Harris held a rally in North Las Vegas that evening.

Top Takeaways from the Rally:

  1. Focus on Immigration: Trump centered his speech on immigration, proposing stricter measures, including a call for the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of murdering Americans. He pledged to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to detain or deport citizens of “enemy nations.” He highlighted stories of crime allegedly linked to undocumented immigrants, prompting chants from the audience.

  2. Campaign Platform: Trump’s platform includes policies to end taxes on tips and Social Security, support tax credits for caregivers, and increase domestic oil production. He reiterated his goal to reduce federal involvement in gender issues and restore “free speech.” Addressing the audience, he asked, “Are you better now than you were four years ago?” to widespread responses of “no.”

  3. Criticisms of Harris: Trump directly criticized Vice President Harris, accusing her of inaction on policies she currently supports. He labeled her a “radical left Marxist” and questioned her readiness for office, stating that she “cannot handle the presidency.”

  4. Down-Ballot Support: Nevada’s GOP figures, including Gov. Joe Lombardo and Senate candidate Sam Brown, urged voters to select Republican candidates in all state and local races. Lombardo emphasized the importance of a Republican majority in the legislature to maintain veto power. Brown expressed optimism about his campaign’s momentum and increasing voter registration.

  5. Supporter Sentiment: Attendees dressed in Halloween costumes and MAGA gear, sharing their enthusiasm for Trump’s policies. Las Vegas residents voiced their support, citing his “realism” and stance on issues like economic reform, taxes on tips, and gender policy in sports. They expressed frustration with rising costs and appreciation for Trump’s approach to governance.

With this rally marking his last appearance in Nevada before Election Day, Trump’s final push aimed to energize voters in this key swing state as both parties make their final appeals.

🏈 Raiders Reassess Offensive Line as Team Eyes New Quarterback for 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders, sitting at 2-6, are widely expected to target a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. To support a future franchise QB, the team is assessing its offensive line, which has shown strengths in pass protection but struggled in the run game, averaging just 79 rushing yards per game—second-lowest in the NFL. The performance and fit of the line remain under scrutiny, especially with some rookies stepping up and injuries shaking up the lineup.

The line has bright spots. Left tackle Kolton Miller has improved after an offseason shoulder injury, and rookie right tackle DJ Glaze has performed well, giving up only two sacks in six games. Right guard Dylan Parham had a strong start to the season but is currently out with a foot injury, allowing Jordan Meredith to step in, impressing with no sacks allowed in 120 pass-blocking snaps.

Rookie Jackson Powers-Johnson, initially slated for left guard, recently stepped in at center due to Andre James' ankle injury. This move may be more than temporary; James, who ranks 32nd out of 37 centers per Pro Football Focus, is under contract but could be replaced with minimal cost. Powers-Johnson’s seamless transition to center has caught the attention of the coaching staff, raising the possibility of a new interior trio with Parham, Powers-Johnson, and Meredith.

The remaining games this season will be a testing ground for different offensive line combinations, including exploring Parham at center. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy highlighted the flexibility of the line as a major asset, with all options open to ensure the best protection for a potential new quarterback next season.

🎰 MGM, Caesars Brace for $30M Drop in F1 Weekend Revenues in Vegas

MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment, two of Las Vegas Strip’s largest casino-hotel operators, are preparing for a scaled-back financial impact from the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, compared to last year’s debut event. Both companies shared during recent quarterly earnings calls that they anticipate year-over-year declines in revenue from this year’s Formula One event, scheduled for November 21-23.

Despite attracting affluent customers, MGM’s CFO Jonathan Halkyard noted that the event is not expected to match 2023’s performance but will still drive significant economic activity during what is usually a slow weekend for the city. Caesars CEO Tom Reeg also expects the event to bring in more visitors, though with a “flat-to-down” return on earnings depending largely on gambling revenue, which could vary with international F1 fans.

MGM’s CEO Bill Hornbuckle projected that hotel room revenues would fall short by about $30 million compared to 2023, as some room rates are reportedly down by 50% from last year. He cited last year’s high demand, particularly at MGM’s premier hotels (Bellagio, Aria, and The Cosmopolitan), as difficult to replicate. Additionally, MGM incurred costs for constructing the Bellagio’s Fountain Club this year, unlike in 2023 when an outside party funded the space.

Both executives noted that the race remains a valuable draw for Las Vegas despite the anticipated year-over-year decline, emphasizing its importance in attracting high-spending visitors.

✈ Spirit Airlines to Furlough 330 More Pilots Amid Financial Struggles

After a federal judge blocked JetBlue Airways from acquiring Spirit Airlines over antitrust concerns earlier this year, Spirit has struggled financially. The low-cost airline, burdened by $3.3 billion in debt, recently negotiated a refinancing deal to extend $1.1 billion in debt payments until the end of 2023. However, significant financial challenges remain, leading the airline to enact cost-cutting measures, including workforce reductions.

On October 30, Spirit announced plans to furlough 330 additional pilots by January 31, 2024, after previously furloughing 130 pilots in September. The airline also plans to downsize its flight capacity nearly by half from last year’s levels, prompted partly by engine recalls affecting its fleet. Furthermore, Spirit has been selling older Airbus planes to boost liquidity.

Meanwhile, a potential merger between Spirit and Frontier Airlines is reportedly under discussion. Frontier had shown interest in acquiring Spirit in 2022 but was outbid by JetBlue’s $3.8 billion offer, which was later blocked by the Department of Justice (DoJ) over competition concerns. A Frontier merger could face similar regulatory scrutiny, as the DoJ aims to protect low-cost travel options for consumers.

Amid these financial pressures, Spirit’s stock has shown volatility, trading at $2.41 after plummeting to $1.40 just weeks ago, a stark contrast to last year’s value above $17. Analysts caution that Spirit’s financial restructuring might still require Chapter 11 bankruptcy if cost and debt issues remain unresolved.
