High-Stakes Bets Boost Harris' Odds in 2024 Race, But Trump Holds Lead

Recent changes in betting odds reflect growing support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, though former President Donald Trump remains the favored candidate across major betting platforms. According to BetOnline, an offshore sportsbook not regulated in the U.S., Harris' odds improved significantly from +180 on Wednesday to +148 by Friday, while Trump’s odds decreased from -210 to -173 over the same period. This shift is attributed to an influx of bets on Harris over the past two days, which reportedly outpaced those on Trump by a 4-to-1 margin.

BetOnline saw several notable wagers favoring Harris, including a $35,000 bet placed at +165 and another $20,000 bet at +160. These high-stakes bets prompted BetOnline to adjust the odds in her favor, reflecting increased confidence from the betting public. Dave Mason, brand manager for BetOnline, commented on the trend, noting that Harris has shown “momentum” over recent days.

In response to this shift, BetOnline adjusted Trump’s odds as well, moving him from -190 to -180 on Thursday, although a substantial $41,914 bet on Trump briefly stabilized his odds. The odds moved once more on Friday after the flurry of bets for Harris continued to drive market movement.

Similarly, BetMGM, which is offering election betting exclusively in its Ontario sportsbook, saw comparable odds adjustments. BetMGM initially listed Trump as a -225 favorite on Wednesday, with Harris as a +175 underdog. These odds decreased over the next two days, reaching -185 for Trump and +140 for Harris by Friday. BetMGM analyst John Ewing, who tracks betting trends on social media, noted the shift as part of a larger trend across platforms.

Electionbettingodds.com, a site that averages live odds from various betting exchanges including FTX.com, Betfair.com, PredictIt.org, Smarkets.com, and Polymarket.com, also recorded a similar trend. Trump's chances of winning the election, calculated at 61.2% (or -158) on Monday, dropped to 56.5% (or -130) by Friday. Harris, on the other hand, saw her estimated chances increase from 38.3% (+161) to 43.0% (+133) over the same timeframe. These adjusted odds suggest a growing perception of competitiveness in the upcoming election, though Trump still maintains a lead.

In Nevada, a key state that has leaned Democratic in recent elections, Trump continues to hold a strong lead. Electionbettingodds.com reported Trump’s odds of winning Nevada increased slightly from 63.5% (-174) on Monday to 66.0% (-194) on Friday. Harris’ chances of winning Nevada, however, saw a slight decline, falling from 35.5% (+182) on Monday to 34.0% (+194) by Friday. This regional trend underscores Trump’s sustained appeal in battleground areas that could prove pivotal in the election.

Betting on U.S. political outcomes is not permitted domestically, but offshore sites like BetOnline, as well as Canadian sportsbooks such as BetMGM in Ontario, provide legal avenues for political wagering. These markets offer an additional lens into public sentiment and can reflect changing perceptions of candidates' competitiveness. For many, the odds represent not only potential profits but also a barometer of how the race is evolving as November 2024 approaches.

🏒 Knights’ Home Wins Highlight Roster Changes, Team Resilience

The Vegas Golden Knights, coming off a Stanley Cup victory in 2023, have kicked off their 2024-25 season with impressive resilience and adaptation to roster turnover. Their 7-3-1 record reflects a solid start, especially at T-Mobile Arena, where they remain undefeated. This success is driven by both fresh faces and returning core players, blending to create a competitive lineup that has General Manager Kelly McCrimmon optimistic about the season’s potential.

Embracing Roster Turnover

For the Knights, maintaining a winning culture means embracing the cycle of change that comes with being a top-tier organization. “You need to react to roster turnover and almost embrace it,” McCrimmon explained, noting that departures and acquisitions each season are a natural part of being a successful team. After key players like Chandler Stephenson, Jonathan Marchessault, and Michael Amadio moved on to lucrative contracts with other teams, the Knights brought in new talent, including left wing Tanner Pearson, right wing Alexander Holtz, and forward Cole Schwindt. These additions, while less high-profile, have made substantial contributions to the team’s early success.

McCrimmon pointed out that the Knights’ system thrives when returning players can step up, citing Brett Howden, Keegan Kolesar, and Pavel Dorofeyev as examples of those who have embraced more significant roles. Meanwhile, new acquisitions like Pearson, who joined the Knights on a professional tryout before earning a contract, have meshed well with the team’s culture and brought fresh energy to the ice. Pearson has already tallied three goals and seven points, while Holtz has enjoyed a career-best five-game point streak, underscoring the effectiveness of the Knights’ new additions.

Building a Strong and Balanced Roster

In previous years, McCrimmon’s roster construction strategy focused on keeping salary cap impacts low while maintaining high productivity. This year is no different. The combined cap hit of recent additions Pearson, Holtz, Schwindt, and right wing Victor Olofsson amounts to just $3.544 million, significantly less than the $19.85 million combined cap hit of the players they replaced. Olofsson, a July free-agent signing, scored three goals in his first four games before suffering a lower-body injury, showing early promise as a solid depth addition.

McCrimmon’s savvy maneuvering has allowed the Knights to maintain a deep roster without sacrificing quality, a testament to his experience in identifying value players. “Coming to a group with 23, 24 guys that all have the same goals in common is really good,” Pearson said. “To where I started here, I didn’t put expectations too high. You just have to keep doing the stuff that got you here in the first place.”

Strength in Returning Core and Emerging Stars

While the Knights did see the exit of several top players, McCrimmon ensured the team would retain its leadership core and veteran presence. This includes captain Mark Stone, center Jack Eichel, and left wing Ivan Barbashev, who now form what McCrimmon believes to be the Knights’ best-ever top line. The chemistry among these three has translated into a powerful offensive trio that has been crucial to the team’s early wins.

The Golden Knights’ defense has also continued to be a cornerstone of their success, with blue-liners chipping in on offense and playing a disciplined game that minimizes opponent scoring opportunities. Defensemen like Shea Theodore and Alex Pietrangelo are integral to the Knights’ strategies, providing both defensive reliability and scoring threat from the back end. McCrimmon’s strategic planning last season—acquiring center Tomas Hertl and defenseman Noah Hanifin at the trade deadline—was aimed at ensuring a seamless transition for the current season.

Enhanced Power Play and Motivated Mindset

One area of improvement that McCrimmon is particularly proud of is the team’s power play. “Our power play has never been better,” he said, reflecting on the unit’s potency and consistency this season. McCrimmon attributes this improvement to both the skill level of the top line and the offensive contributions from the defense, which has allowed the Knights to convert crucial opportunities with a man advantage.

The early playoff exit last season served as a wake-up call for the team. “Being eliminated in the first round was humbling,” McCrimmon admitted. However, it has also reinvigorated the team’s determination and work ethic. Players spent extra time in training over the summer, aiming to rebuild their stamina and improve on-ice chemistry. This renewed focus has translated into a sharper, more disciplined team that still embodies the Knights’ trademark grit and resilience.

“We had something to prove,” McCrimmon said, recalling the team’s journey from missing the playoffs to winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. “That attitude has served our organization well, and I like that part. It’s always been part of our DNA.” The current roster is not just seeking another title; they’re motivated by the drive to keep proving themselves, both individually and as a team.

Looking Forward

As the Golden Knights prepare to face the Utah Grizzlies at home, the team’s goal remains clear: to continue improving with each game and maintain their status as a consistent contender. McCrimmon’s strategic roster adjustments, combined with a steadfast core and emerging talent, position the Knights as a formidable force this season. “It’s a long season,” he said. “You always have to continue to get better.”

With a balanced roster, strong leadership, and a culture that embraces growth, the Golden Knights are poised to build on their early success and remain a top team in the league. Whether it’s developing new players or refining their power play, the Knights’ approach is a winning one—and fans have every reason to be optimistic as the season unfolds.

🏡 Vegas Residents Face Rising Housing Costs and Seek Relief in Upcoming Election

For Maria Isabel Macias, a cook at Caesars Palace, the dream of owning a home in Las Vegas feels increasingly out of reach. Now 58, she has been renting and struggling with rising costs despite years of hard work. Her American dream remains elusive as expenses like water, electricity, and garbage continue to climb, while her wages fail to keep up. With the 2024 election days away, Macias, who supports Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, hopes Harris’ plan to offer first-time homebuyers $25,000 in down payment assistance can help her finally afford a home.

A Housing Market Squeeze

The Las Vegas housing market has changed dramatically over the past decade, transforming from an affordable option to one marked by skyrocketing rents and home prices. According to John Restrepo, an economic consultant with RCG Economics, median home prices have increased sharply, and mortgage rates have exceeded 7% despite recent Federal Reserve rate cuts, making homeownership unattainable for many residents.

In 2014, the median resale price of a home in Clark County was just $172,800, with average mortgage rates around 4.3%. Today’s costs are vastly higher, and rent, which once averaged around $1,200 for a two-bedroom unit, has shot up. Ivory Lay, who has worked at the Starbucks in Vdara Hotel & Spa on the Strip for nearly 30 years, has experienced these changes firsthand. Living in Summerlin with her two children, her rent has risen to $1,701 a month. “They’ve added all these fees—trash, HOA—it just keeps going up,” Lay said, echoing her fears that even a minor health issue could put her housing at risk.

Political Divides on Housing Solutions

Las Vegas voters, nearly split on their preference for Harris or Trump, are weighing two different economic and housing proposals. Harris’ plan to offer substantial down payment assistance aims to help residents like Macias and Lay build wealth through homeownership. Trump’s proposal, meanwhile, includes policies aimed at increasing the supply of housing by opening federal lands for development and boosting the broader economy to improve affordability.

Albert Avalos, a Henderson resident, supports Trump’s approach, saying, “Housing will become way more affordable just by fixing the economy and fixing energy.” Another Las Vegas resident, Justin Trippiedi, believes Trump’s plan to open federal land for housing is a step in the right direction. “There’s way too much [federal land] out there,” he said, suggesting it could be better utilized for housing.

The Impact of Rising Rents

The cost of renting is also a major concern. According to Redfin, the share of U.S. renters paying less than $1,000 per month is now just one-third, the lowest on record. In the Las Vegas Valley, the number of renters paying below $1,000 has dropped from 32.5% in 2019 to 17.8% today. The benchmark that no household should spend more than 30% of monthly income on rent or a mortgage is out of reach for many Las Vegas residents, creating financial strain that has affected local spending and stability.

Restrepo warns that without significant increases in housing supply, higher median incomes, or both, the region’s affordability crisis will persist. “The Las Vegas metro can no longer be said to have an affordable housing market,” he noted. The current crisis presents challenges not only to housing stability but to the broader economy, with wide-reaching impacts on local politics, employment, and community well-being.

Dreams of Homeownership at a Crossroads

As Election Day nears, voters like Macias and Lay are hoping for a leader who can make homeownership more accessible. For Macias, who has canvassed for Harris with the Culinary Union in North Las Vegas, the dream of owning a home remains alive, but distant. “I want to own a home,” she said. “That is the dream, that is the American dream.”
