Secretary of State Promises Quick Nevada Results, Initial Totals Expected Election Night

Nevada, which has faced scrutiny in recent years for its slow vote counting, is aiming to deliver more timely results in this year’s election. The Nevada secretary of state’s office has outlined a streamlined plan to release an initial set of results promptly after polls close and the last voter has cast their ballot on election night.

This first release will include all votes cast prior to Election Day, such as mail ballots and in-person early votes. Counties have been authorized to begin processing in-person early votes from 8 a.m. on Election Day, expediting the counting process for these ballots. As of Monday, over 1 million votes had already been cast in Nevada, representing 52.4% of registered voters, according to the state’s data.

While this process aims to provide a substantial first release of results, delays could still occur if a court orders polling locations to stay open beyond the standard 7 p.m. closing time due to factors such as technical difficulties or weather-related disruptions. Any such delay would mean a longer wait for the first batch of statewide results.

Following this initial release, counties will continue providing updates throughout the evening as they count additional votes cast on Election Day and mail-in ballots received on Tuesday. Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar referenced Nevada’s June 2024 primary, noting that during that election, counties released a significant portion of results within 10 minutes of confirming all polls had closed. Although turnout in the general election is expected to be much higher, Aguilar expressed optimism that the process will yield a similar efficiency.

“This election is different than the June primary, with much higher turnout, but we’re hopeful the process will help us deliver election results as close to election night as possible for all of you to analyze and call races,” Aguilar stated in a press call on Friday.

One factor slowing the release of Election Day vote totals is the security measure requiring physical transportation of thumb drives from polling machines to the county’s tabulation computers, as the machines are not connected to the internet. This ensures the integrity of the vote count but does add extra time to the process.

While the state aims to release a large portion of preliminary results on election night, official results won’t be finalized until November 12, which is also the deadline for voters to cure any issues with their ballot signatures. Mail ballots postmarked on or before Election Day will still be counted if received by the county clerk by 5 p.m. on Saturday, four days after the election. State law also provides that if a ballot’s postmark is unclear, it can be counted if received by Friday, the third day after Election Day.

Race calls are ultimately made by news organizations, such as the Associated Press, which base their decisions on a careful analysis of the available vote totals and trends. The AP and other media outlets will call races once they are confident the trailing candidate cannot overcome the lead. However, for closely contested races, such as the presidential race is expected to be, Nevadans may need to wait until more vote totals are tallied.

To stay updated on Nevada election results as they are released, voters can visit the official Silver State election site, silverstateelection.nv.gov.

🏀 Dedan Thomas Jr. Returns to Lead UNLV to 93-79 Season Opener Victory

UNLV men’s basketball team opened their season with a commanding 93-79 win over Alabama State, thanks to standout performances from returning star Dedan Thomas Jr. and key newcomer Jeremiah "Bear" Cherry. The Rebels were buoyed by the return of Thomas, their sophomore point guard, who was initially expected to miss the game due to an ankle injury. However, after steady improvement and intensive care from trainers, Thomas was cleared to play, giving the Rebels a significant boost in their season opener at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Cherry, a 6-foot-11, 280-pound junior college transfer, made an immediate impact in the post, scoring 24 points on an efficient 10-of-11 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds. Cherry’s physical presence and aggression in the paint were instrumental in disrupting Alabama State’s defense and keeping their starting center, Ubong Okon, in foul trouble with five fouls in just 12 minutes of play. Cherry’s performance showed he could be a game-changing force for UNLV.

“I’ve been doubted my whole life,” Cherry shared postgame. “So it felt great to get out and let people know who I am. It felt amazing.”

Thomas Jr., despite not being fully at 100%, directed the offense smoothly, helping his teammates find high-percentage shots in the paint. His leadership was particularly evident during moments when he left the floor, as the offense became noticeably less fluid without him. Thomas’s ability to distribute the ball effectively kept UNLV’s offense rolling, contributing to an impressive 56.9% team shooting percentage from the field and 9-for-20 from beyond the arc. He finished the night with 17 points, seven assists, and no turnovers, showcasing his resilience and playmaking skills.

“Dedan kept us moving, getting the ball to the right spots,” said head coach Kevin Kruger. “As much as he’s going to have the ball in his hands, it’s pivotal he protects it.”

The game highlighted UNLV’s effective ball movement and inside-out play. Kruger noted that the team scored on 25 of 29 possessions whenever they managed to get a “paint touch,” emphasizing how crucial interior play was to their shooting success. Florida transfer Julian Rishwain contributed significantly from the perimeter, scoring 13 points and going 4-of-8 from three-point range, helping UNLV keep pace in the first half when Alabama State’s offense was hot.

Alabama State entered the game with momentum, hitting nine of their first 11 shots and draining their first five three-point attempts. This early surge gave the Hornets a 23-18 lead, forcing Kruger to bring Thomas back into the game after a brief rest. UNLV quickly responded with an 11-0 run, fueled by three forced turnovers, and took control of the game. Despite their early hot shooting, Alabama State struggled to keep up once UNLV found its rhythm, and the Rebels never trailed again.

Thomas’s ability to push through his injury and set the tempo kept the Rebels in control, while Cherry’s dominance in the post ensured Alabama State couldn’t maintain their early lead. The Rebels built a 46-41 halftime lead and gradually extended it in the second half, finishing with a 14-point victory.

Cherry’s debut, combined with Thomas’s leadership and Rishwain’s perimeter shooting, leaves UNLV optimistic as they look to build on this season-opening win. With Thomas healthy and Cherry proving to be a valuable asset in the post, the Rebels appear poised for a strong season.

😋 Iconic TGI Fridays Files for Bankruptcy, Closes Dozens of Locations in Restructuring Move

On Saturday, TGI Fridays, the iconic casual dining chain, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it seeks strategies to preserve the long-term viability of its brand. The filing in a Texas federal court marks a turning point for the Dallas-based restaurant chain, which has struggled with declining sales and store closures amid shifting consumer preferences and economic challenges. TGI Fridays has closed numerous locations over the past year and now aims to restructure its finances to weather a tough market for traditional sit-down restaurants.

Founded in 1965 as a Manhattan bar on the Upper East Side, TGI Fridays quickly grew into a popular dining and social spot with a signature atmosphere featuring red-striped decor, Tiffany-style lamps, and a menu of American comfort foods like loaded potato skins and ribs. The restaurant’s distinct identity even crossed into pop culture, as its bartenders famously trained Tom Cruise for his role in the 1988 film Cocktail, and its vibrant uniforms inspired a humorous parody in the 1999 comedy Office Space. At its peak in 2008, the chain boasted 601 U.S. locations, generating $2 billion in sales and becoming a staple in suburban dining.

However, TGI Fridays’ financial fortunes have been on a downward slide. In 2023, the chain’s U.S. sales declined by 15% from the prior year, dropping to $728 million, according to industry research firm Technomic. The number of U.S. locations has also shrunk dramatically; from 269 last year, only 163 remain after a wave of closures, including 36 in January and several more in recent weeks.

Rohit Manocha, TGI Fridays' executive chairman, attributed the company’s current financial strain to the economic impact of COVID-19 and the burden of its existing capital structure. The pandemic hit sit-down restaurants hard, with lockdowns driving many consumers to favor delivery and fast-casual dining options like Chipotle and Shake Shack. While TGI Fridays attempted to adapt by establishing “ghost kitchens”—food preparation facilities that only serve delivery customers—their efforts did not generate enough revenue to stabilize the business. DoorDash, a major delivery service, is among TGI Fridays’ largest creditors listed in the bankruptcy filings.

In recent years, the broader sit-down restaurant sector has faced financial struggles, with other major players filing for bankruptcy as they grapple with changing consumer habits. For instance, Red Lobster, another prominent dining chain, secured court approval for a reorganization plan in September after years of financial loss. Italian-American restaurant chain Buca di Beppo filed for bankruptcy in August, and in October, Denny’s announced plans to close 150 underperforming locations in an attempt to revive its sales.

Today, TGI Fridays operates only 39 company-owned locations in the U.S., out of 461 TGI Fridays-branded restaurants worldwide. The majority of these are franchises, operated by 56 independent owners in 41 countries, and are unaffected by the bankruptcy filing. The brand’s franchisee in the United Kingdom, Hostmore, sought debt protection in September and has closed several UK locations after an acquisition deal fell through.

Kevin Schimpf, director of industry research at Technomic, noted that TGI Fridays’ footprint and revenues have contracted significantly from its peak years. Still, the company’s restructuring aims to give the chain a chance to adjust to today’s restaurant landscape. As TGI Fridays undergoes this financial reorganization, the company’s leadership hopes the iconic brand can find new ways to appeal to customers and remain competitive in a sector that has seen rapid evolution.

🚗 Boring Company’s Vegas Loop Station Set to Transform Allegiant Stadium Access

Allegiant Stadium will lose nearly 200 on-site parking spaces to make room for a planned Vegas Loop station, part of a growing Boring Company transportation system designed to connect key Las Vegas destinations via underground tunnels. According to Clark County documents submitted on Oct. 14, the new station will occupy Lot B on the northwest side of the 62-acre stadium site, featuring 20 loading bays for easy passenger boarding and drop-off. Although the change will reduce available parking, top tourism officials are optimistic the new transit option will enhance overall stadium accessibility.

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, views the addition of the Vegas Loop as an opportunity to offset the parking loss by increasing transportation capacity. “When you think about taking a parking spot out here, if the Boring Company delivers two cars for every spot it takes out, it’s double the amount of effective parking,” Hill explained. This high-capacity transit option could play a vital role in stadium accessibility as Las Vegas expands its sports and entertainment venues.

Connecting Major Attractions

The Allegiant Stadium station is part of the broader Vegas Loop, which is envisioned to span 68 miles with 104 planned stations, connecting areas from Harry Reid International Airport through the Strip and downtown Las Vegas. A critical component of this project is the future Tropicana loop segment, which will connect Allegiant Stadium to the upcoming Las Vegas ballpark for the Oakland Athletics, set to open by the 2028 MLB season, as well as multiple MGM Resorts properties, UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center, and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. This interconnected system will enhance the accessibility of major venues, helping streamline transportation for both locals and tourists.

Hill emphasized that establishing the Tropicana link between Allegiant Stadium and the new baseball stadium is a top priority, particularly as construction is expected to begin on the Tropicana site next year. “We’ve got to work with the Tropicana, with MGM, because there’s several spots (MGM Resorts properties) along the way,” Hill noted. “It is one of two or three legs to the system that they’re currently working on to get done … in the next year-year-and-a-half.”

Beyond providing a convenient transit option for the A’s fans in 2028, the Tropicana connection offers a strategic advantage for Las Vegas’ convention industry by linking the Mandalay Bay Convention Center to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Hill envisions this could enable larger conventions to expand between the two venues, furthering Las Vegas’s reputation as a premier convention destination.

Parking Availability and Transportation Solutions

Despite the loss of 200 parking spaces, Allegiant Stadium’s parking capacity is projected to remain sufficient for major events. The 65,000-seat facility relies heavily on a combination of on-site and off-site parking, with a total of 21,560 spaces available within the vicinity. A 2023 study by engineering firm Kimley-Horn reported that even with the Vegas Loop station, Allegiant Stadium will have 21,360 parking spaces, of which 2,175 are on-site. An estimated 8,600 parking spaces are needed for Raiders games, leaving a surplus of 12,760 spaces per game, including surrounding lots and garages. For non-Raiders events, the parking demand averages around 6,900 spaces, meaning there remains ample parking capacity even with the reduced spots.

The transportation infrastructure around Allegiant Stadium has adapted well over the years. With 66% of Raiders fans traveling from out of town, the majority arrive using alternative transport options rather than personal vehicles. The Regional Transportation Commission’s Gameday Express service also serves as a popular option, with about 12% of local attendees taking advantage of the $4 round-trip bus service.

By increasing high-efficiency transit options, Allegiant Stadium is taking steps to accommodate a growing number of fans while reducing reliance on personal vehicles. The Vegas Loop station represents a forward-thinking approach to Las Vegas’s growing sports and event attendance, positioning the city as a model for urban transport innovation.
