❎ Trump Triumphs: Wins 2024 Election, Defeats Harris in Comeback Victory
In a historic political comeback, former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. This victory makes Trump the second U.S. president after Grover Cleveland to serve nonconsecutive terms. Key to Trump's win were decisive victories in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Trump's campaign focused on reversing the policies of the Biden-Harris administration, promising a "golden age" for America. The election cycle was marked by intense drama, including two assassination attempts against Trump and numerous legal battles. Despite these challenges, Trump emerged as the GOP frontrunner, ultimately securing widespread endorsements, including some from unlikely allies.
His running mate, Senator JD Vance, was credited as a strong choice, and together they plan to implement policies aimed at economic growth, border security, and national strength. Meanwhile, Harris campaigned on safeguarding democracy but could not overcome Trump’s momentum.
🏈 Raiders Shake Up Coaching Staff After Fifth Straight Loss to Bengals
The Las Vegas Raiders have made sweeping changes to their offensive coaching staff following a 41-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, marking their fifth consecutive defeat. The loss not only underscored the team’s ongoing struggles but also prompted a series of firings aimed at rejuvenating the team’s performance heading into the latter half of the season.
Coaching Staff Overhaul
After the loss, the Raiders dismissed offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive line coach James Cregg, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. In response, the team promoted pass game coordinator Scott Turner to interim offensive coordinator and brought in senior offensive assistant Joe Philbin as interim offensive line coach.
Adding to the overhaul, Norv Turner, Scott’s father and a longtime NFL coach, will join the staff as a senior advisor. The changes aim to reset the offensive game plan and revitalize a unit that has failed to sustain drives and score consistently.
What Went Wrong in Cincinnati
The Bengals game was a microcosm of the Raiders’ struggles this season. After a promising start with a touchdown on their opening drive, the team’s offense quickly unraveled. Missed opportunities, stalled drives, and defensive lapses allowed Cincinnati to take control.
While the Raiders have shown flashes of brilliance on opening drives — scoring on their first possession in four of their last five games — they’ve struggled to maintain momentum. Against the Bengals, the offense didn’t find the end zone again until the final minute of the fourth quarter, a glaring example of their inconsistency.
Defensive Highlight: Jack Jones' Pick-Six
One bright spot for the Raiders was cornerback Jack Jones, who delivered a standout play in the fourth quarter. Diagnosing a screen pass intended for Ja’Marr Chase, Jones intercepted Joe Burrow’s throw and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. The play demonstrated Jones’ film study and quick instincts, giving the Raiders a brief spark.
However, defensive highlights like this have been rare during the team’s current losing streak, and the Raiders’ offense has often been unable to capitalize on such momentum shifts.
Offensive Line Struggles and Injuries
Injuries have plagued the Raiders’ offensive line, further complicating their efforts. By the end of Sunday’s game, the team was down to just five healthy linemen. Starters such as left tackle Kolton Miller, Andrus Peat, and Cody Whitehair exited with injuries, leaving the Raiders dangerously thin in the trenches.
Rookie lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson was a standout, stepping in at center following Andre James’ injury. A natural center during his college career at Oregon, Powers-Johnson’s strong performance could make him a permanent fixture at the position moving forward.
Quarterback Carousel
Quarterback play has been another issue for the Raiders. Starter Gardner Minshew led the team in the first half but was replaced by Desmond Ridder in the third quarter. Ridder, who joined the team just weeks ago, showed flashes of potential despite limited practice time. He struggled under pressure, a recurring problem due to the makeshift offensive line, but managed to orchestrate a touchdown drive late in the game.
The Raiders’ inability to protect their quarterbacks and sustain offensive drives has been a major factor in their ongoing slump.
Coaching Decisions and Risk-Taking
While the Raiders avoided major strategic missteps, the Bengals seized control with bold coaching decisions. Facing a fourth-and-3 early in the game, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor opted to go for it rather than settle for a field goal. The gamble paid off, leading to a touchdown that shifted momentum in Cincinnati’s favor.
The Raiders’ coaching staff, now reshuffled, will need to show similar decisiveness and creativity if they hope to turn their season around.
Observations and Moving Forward
Jordan Meredith continues to impress at right guard, making a strong case for a permanent starting role even as the line heals.
The Raiders’ thin roster was exposed in Cincinnati, with injuries forcing them to consider unconventional solutions like using defensive players or injured tight ends in emergency situations.
The upcoming bye week offers a much-needed break. It will give injured players time to recover and provide the new coaching staff a chance to retool their offensive schemes. The Raiders will return to action on November 17 against the Miami Dolphins, a tough matchup that will test whether the coaching changes can deliver immediate results.
Final Thoughts
With a five-game losing streak and a series of coaching changes, the Raiders are at a crossroads. The team’s leadership is betting on a revamped offensive strategy to halt their skid and revive playoff hopes. However, the road ahead is challenging, and much will depend on how quickly the new coaching staff can implement changes and how effectively the players can execute.
Key Takeaways:
Coaching Changes: Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive line coach James Cregg, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello were fired. Scott Turner and Joe Philbin will lead the revamped offensive unit.
Injuries: The offensive line remains a major concern, with several key players sidelined.
Quarterback Situation: Desmond Ridder showed potential but faced pressure behind a depleted line.
Looking Ahead: The Raiders will use their bye week to regroup before facing the Dolphins.

🎰 Boyd Gaming Continues Renovations with Gold Coast Completion, Orleans Up Next
Boyd Gaming has completed a significant hotel renovation at its Gold Coast hotel-casino on west Flamingo Road near Interstate 15, upgrading 684 guest rooms in a project that spanned over a year. This extensive renovation brings updated amenities, modernized furnishings, and newly renovated bathrooms to the rooms, though the property’s suites were not included. The project is part of Boyd Gaming’s larger reinvestment strategy aimed at refreshing its hotel offerings to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving hospitality market.
“We want to make sure that we’re keeping our hotel product fresh,” said Boyd Gaming spokesperson David Strow. “Some of these efforts were delayed by the pandemic a few years ago, so now we’re starting to bring our normal cadence of hotel remodels online across the country.” Strow noted that renovations at the Gold Coast are part of a wider initiative that includes recent updates at Boyd’s Main Street Station in downtown Las Vegas, the Blue Chip hotel-casino in Indiana, and Ameristar casino-resort in St. Charles, Missouri.
Next in Line: The Orleans Hotel-Casino
Following the Gold Coast’s upgrades, Boyd Gaming plans to start another major renovation at The Orleans, its 1,885-room hotel-casino on west Tropicana Avenue near Decatur Boulevard. This upcoming project will follow a similar approach, updating rooms and public spaces to ensure the property remains attractive to both local patrons and tourists.
Other Boyd Projects in the Las Vegas Valley
In addition to the Gold Coast and The Orleans renovations, Boyd Gaming is undertaking several other capital projects across the Las Vegas Valley. These include a full-scale renovation of public areas at Suncoast Casino near Summerlin. Additionally, Boyd is moving forward with plans for Cadence Crossing, a new ground-up casino project in Henderson, with groundbreaking expected soon.
While Boyd Gaming declined to disclose the specific cost of the Gold Coast renovations, the company has allocated substantial resources toward property improvements across its national portfolio. In an earnings call on Oct. 24, Chief Financial Officer Josh Hirsberg projected that Boyd’s 2024 capital expenditures will total between $400 million and $425 million, with approximately $75 million specifically earmarked for room renovations.
This wave of investments marks Boyd’s commitment to maintaining its properties’ appeal amidst Las Vegas’s competitive market. With each project, Boyd aims to enhance the guest experience through modernized accommodations, while positioning its properties to keep pace with recent upgrades at other major hotel-casinos.
🏠 Las Vegas Housing Market Calms After Five Years of Volatility, Still Near Record Highs
The Las Vegas residential real estate market, which has experienced sharp ups and downs over the last five years, may be reaching a new period of stability, according to recent data from Zillow. Following years of pandemic-fueled volatility, the market is showing signs of balance as buyers and sellers reach “neutral territory” for the first time in years, says Kara Ng, a senior economist at Zillow. Although the market appears steadier, home prices continue to rise and could yet surpass prior records.
“Home value appreciation remains fairly robust in Las Vegas at 5.7 percent year-over-year, again among the strongest in the country,” Ng noted. The Zillow Home Value Index for Las Vegas lists the average home price at $431,000 as of September 2023, a slight 0.1 percent drop from August, but a 5.7 percent increase from the same period last year. This price is close to the record high of $433,222 reached in September 2022, during peak post-pandemic inflation.
Ng attributed the market’s volatility to fluctuating mortgage rates, which dropped to record lows during the pandemic and spurred intense home-buying competition. However, demand cooled significantly in 2022 as rates rose sharply, only to pick up again in 2023. Now, as mortgage rates hover around 7 percent, potential sellers who secured ultra-low rates during the pandemic are less likely to move, resulting in fewer listings.
Adding to Las Vegas’s housing constraints is a shortage of available land, which has driven up land and home prices in the valley. Much of this stems from the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) controlling approximately 88 percent of Clark County’s land. The private sector has long called for more BLM land to be released for development, but progress has been slow over the past few decades.
Local real estate professionals echo Ng’s analysis, indicating that a slower rate of appreciation is likely here to stay. Veteran Las Vegas Realtor Steven Poscente of Remax Advantage expects prices to decline by around 3 percent by year-end. He views the recent data as a reset from the rapid growth seen during the pandemic and hopes the market will enter a more sustainable phase.
“Many of us were spoiled and have been unrealistically holding our breath,” Poscente said, referring to the boom years. “Leaving the meteor speed of appreciation behind, we are likely to experience continued growth, albeit at a snail’s pace for now.”
Poscente, who has lived in Las Vegas for nearly 40 years, believes that Las Vegas real estate’s historical tendency toward dramatic boom and bust cycles may be stabilizing. With a strong job market, a growing population, and limited housing inventory, he is optimistic that the market will avoid a significant downturn, unlike during the Great Recession.
“It’s very unlikely that the real estate market will crash,” he said. “With our buoyant, almost healthy economy, strong job market, and inventory being low, there are factors that help prevent a market crash.”
Reflecting on the past cycles, Poscente noted that Las Vegas real estate has been on a “wild ride” for decades. The city’s heavy reliance on tourism has made its housing market uniquely sensitive to economic shocks, such as the 2008 housing crash and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these ups and downs, he sees potential for the city to develop a more sustainable real estate market going forward.
“The average price of a house when I moved to Vegas in March of 1991 was $104,500,” he said. “I’ve invested heavily and lost heavily and appreciate the fact that the peaks and valleys are currently stable.”
Ng also mentioned an increase in building permits since the pandemic, which could gradually improve housing supply over the next few years. With increased inventory, more stable demand, and a growing local economy, Las Vegas real estate may finally be stepping off the roller coaster and onto more even ground.
