📸 Sheriff McMahill Calls for Traffic Cameras to Combat Rising Fatalities in Clark County
Facing an alarming rise in traffic fatalities, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill is urging Nevada lawmakers to approve the use of traffic enforcement cameras. McMahill’s proposal includes installing red-light cameras at 20 of the county’s most dangerous intersections as a starting point. The goal is to reduce the growing number of crashes caused by speeding and red-light running.
The urgency behind this push was underscored on Thursday when a speeding stolen car ran a red light at South Buffalo Drive and West Desert Inn Road, killing another driver. It marked the county’s 135th traffic fatality of the year, putting it on pace to surpass 2023’s death toll.
“When you have to go out and deal with that stuff over and over, it hurts the heart, mind, body and soul of the men and women that are out here doing this work. And for me, it’s just too much,” McMahill said.
Traffic Cameras: Do They Work?
Despite longstanding resistance to traffic cameras in Nevada, studies consistently show their effectiveness in improving road safety.
Key Findings from National Studies:
A joint study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Conference of State Legislatures found red-light cameras reduced fatal crashes at signalized intersections by 14% and red-light running by 21%.
A Federal Highway Administration study reported a 54% reduction in major arterial crashes and a 47% reduction in injury crashes where fixed traffic cameras were used.
Speed cameras in school zones reduced speeding by 63% during school hours.
Support from Local Leaders
Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft strongly supports the introduction of traffic cameras, citing extensive data that highlights their benefits.
“Endless studies on safety cameras, nationally and internationally, show that they’re effective when implemented appropriately,” Naft said. He also noted the potential financial benefits, including reduced auto insurance rates for residents, provided privacy and equity concerns are addressed.
Lessons from Other Cities
Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix recently reinstated its red-light camera program after a five-year hiatus. The city plans to deploy 10 red-light cameras, four mobile speed enforcement vehicles, and four portable tower speed cameras. The goal is not revenue generation but changing driver behavior and enhancing public safety.
Phoenix’s neighboring community, Paradise Valley, was the first U.S. city to adopt traffic cameras in 1987. Over three decades, crashes decreased by 50%.
Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C., operates one of the most extensive traffic camera networks, with 477 cameras, including speed, red-light, and stop sign enforcement. Over 12 months, these cameras issued 3.1 million citations, helping reduce injury crashes by 30%, according to the District Department of Transportation.
Local Pilot Projects Highlight Problem Areas
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) recently conducted a pilot project using AI and cameras to track red-light running at high-risk intersections.
Key Findings:
At Green Valley Parkway and the 215 Beltway, over 14,000 red-light violations were recorded in February.
At Spring Mountain Road and Rainbow Boulevard, 1,411 red-light violations were identified in a single week.
These findings prompted targeted enforcement efforts, such as a six-hour crackdown in April that resulted in 77 citations for red-light running.
Next Steps
Sheriff McMahill and Commissioner Naft hope the compelling data will persuade state lawmakers to approve traffic cameras. While privacy and equity concerns remain, proponents argue that the proven safety benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
🏒 Golden Knights Fall to Kraken in Overtime Despite Late Comeback
The Vegas Golden Knights nearly pulled off another dramatic comeback but ultimately fell 4-3 in overtime to the Seattle Kraken on Friday. Jared McCann capitalized on a turnover by Jack Eichel, scoring the game-winning goal just 29 seconds into the extra frame at Climate Pledge Arena.
The loss snapped the Knights’ perfect record at the Kraken’s home, dropping them to 5-0-1 at the venue and 1-3-2 on the road this season.
Late Heroics Not Enough
Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo tied the game at 3-3 with 1:22 remaining in regulation, giving the Knights hope after pulling goaltender Adin Hill for an extra attacker. However, they couldn’t complete the comeback, undone by a costly turnover in overtime.
“At the end of the day, we got a point,” left wing Tanner Pearson said. “We got three out of four on the road trip. It’s a step in the right direction, but there’s some things to clean up, too.”
Key Performances
Jack Eichel: Despite the late turnover, Eichel notched three assists, giving him a team-leading 22 points.
Pavel Dorofeyev: Scored his eighth goal of the season and leads the team with four power-play goals.
Adin Hill: Made 28 saves, keeping the Knights competitive despite defensive lapses.
Top Line Fills the Void
With captain Mark Stone scratched due to a lower-body injury, the Knights leaned on their top line, and it delivered. Eichel, Dorofeyev, and Nicolas Roy stepped up offensively, with Roy scoring in place of Stone on the first line.
“Eichel did a great job leading that line,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We missed Mark, but our top guys filled in well.”
Stone remains day-to-day, with further evaluation expected over the weekend.
Costly Turnovers and Defensive Woes
Defensive errors plagued the Knights, leading to two goals by Brandon Tanev and another off a bad bounce in front of Hill. Tanev’s first goal came off a turnover by Brayden McNabb, while his second was the result of a mishandled puck by Pietrangelo.
“We put ourselves in bad situations many times today,” Roy said.
Joey Daccord Shines Again
Seattle goaltender Joey Daccord, who shut out the Knights in the 2024 Winter Classic, frustrated Vegas once more. He made 21 saves, including crucial stops on Dorofeyev and Eichel in the third period, helping the Kraken secure the win.
Stephenson Faces Former Team
Chandler Stephenson played against the Knights for the first time since signing a seven-year, $43.75 million contract with Seattle. Though he didn’t record a point, Stephenson led all Kraken forwards in ice time (23:09) and was a force in the faceoff circle, winning 13 of 28 draws.
Three Takeaways
1. Top Line Does Its Job
Without Mark Stone, the top line provided much-needed offense. Eichel’s seventh multipoint game of the season and Roy’s contributions helped keep the Knights competitive.
2. Daccord’s Impact
Daccord continued to torment the Knights, making key saves in high-pressure moments. His performance helped Seattle withstand Vegas’ late push.
3. Defensive Turnovers Costly
Mistakes in their own zone led to all three of Seattle’s goals in regulation. Cleaning up defensive lapses will be a priority as the Knights seek more consistency on the road.
Looking Ahead
The Knights will have the weekend to regroup before resuming play. Cassidy emphasized the importance of addressing the team’s road struggles: “We wanted four points on this trip. Three is pretty good, but we know we let an opportunity slip tonight.”

🎰 Nevada Gamblers Lose $1.3 Million in Disputed Jackpots in 2024
Imagine hitting a life-changing jackpot, only to be told it was a mistake. For at least 16 players in 2024, that nightmare became a reality. Collectively, they missed out on $1.3 million in disputed casino winnings, with their claims rejected by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB). These disputes involved 15 different licensed casinos and sportsbooks across the state, and all were ultimately decided in favor of the casinos.
High-Stakes Disputes
The NGCB regularly hears appeals from patrons who believe they were unfairly denied winnings. In most cases, the board sides with the casinos, citing malfunctions or misunderstandings of game rules. If patrons disagree with the board’s decision, their next option is to pursue the matter in court.
At the board’s most recent meeting in Carson City, two significant cases were reviewed, representing the largest disputed jackpot losses of the year:
Glenn Avila: Avila disputed a $678,587.38 jackpot at Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort. The NGCB concluded that the slot machine was functioning correctly, with board member George Assad affirming that the random-number generator did not malfunction.
Avrahom Orloff: Orloff claimed he was owed $500,000 from a Texas hold ’em game at Resorts World Las Vegas but only received $250,000. The board found that the $500,000 was an aggregate amount to be shared among all winning players, not per player.
Neither patron attended their hearings, which is not uncommon in such cases.
How Patron Disputes Are Handled
The NGCB’s Regulation 7A outlines the process for resolving patron disputes. Here’s how it works:
Filing a Dispute:
When a patron lodges a complaint, the NGCB’s Enforcement Division sends an agent to investigate. The agent reviews the evidence and issues a “decision letter” to all parties involved.Requesting a Hearing:
If a patron disagrees with the decision, they have 20 days to request a hearing. A hearing officer then reviews evidence from both sides.Presenting Evidence:
During the hearing, each party can present witnesses, exhibits, and other evidence. Both the patron and the casino can question witnesses.Board Review:
The hearing officer submits a report to the NGCB, which votes on whether to uphold or reject the recommendation.Final Decision:
Patrons dissatisfied with the NGCB’s ruling have 20 days to consider appealing in court.
Slot Machine Malfunctions: A Common Issue
Many disputes arise from slot machine malfunctions, where the machine displays a jackpot but the internal systems, such as the random-number generator, indicate no win. These errors often nullify payouts, frustrating players.
While the NGCB cannot offer legal advice, it ensures that each case is thoroughly investigated and provides an impartial platform for disputes to be heard.
The Odds Are Against Patrons
In most cases, the NGCB sides with casinos, which typically present more comprehensive evidence and legal expertise. For patrons, the process can be daunting, especially without legal representation, although it is not required for these hearings.
What’s Next for Disputing Patrons?
For those who believe they’ve been wronged, court action remains an option. However, pursuing legal recourse can be time-consuming and expensive, with no guarantee of a favorable outcome.
In the high-stakes world of Nevada gaming, disputes are a stark reminder that even a jackpot isn’t secure until it’s paid out.
🎬 Mark Wahlberg’s Busy Vegas Life: Flecha Cantina, New Gym, and Upcoming Films
Mark Wahlberg showcased his entrepreneurial spirit Thursday night at the VIP opening of his Flecha Cantina restaurant in Town Square. The event followed a minor patio fire earlier in the week, but Wahlberg remained upbeat, sporting his Municipal sportswear brand to promote his growing ventures.
Expanding the Municipal Brand
Wahlberg's Municipal brand is at the heart of his fitness and lifestyle projects. He announced plans for Municipal Gym Fitness and Recovery, a high-end fitness center in partnership with EōS Fitness, set to open in Downtown Summerlin. The gym will offer personalized fitness experiences in a 30,000-square-foot space, departing from his previous focus on F45 group training.
“F45 is fantastic, but we’ve had some issues about how it’s run corporately,” Wahlberg said. “Now I want to create something that’s a big-box, huge experience, really getting one on one with people.”
A Conveyor Belt of Upcoming Films
Wahlberg is keeping busy on the big screen as well. He’s set to star in Flight Risk, directed by Mel Gibson, coming in January. Additional projects include:
“Play Dirty” with Shane Black
“Balls Up”, a comedy directed by Peter Farrelly
“Family Plan 2”, the sequel to his hit family-friendly film
Wahlberg teased even more films in development, signaling a packed slate for the next year.
Pioneering Nevada’s Film Industry
Having called Las Vegas home for over two years, Wahlberg is a leading advocate for Nevada’s burgeoning film industry. He’s backing Sony’s $1.8 billion studio project in Summerlin, a collaboration with Howard Hughes Holdings, aimed at turning Nevada into a prime location for film and television production.
Wahlberg emphasized the importance of Nevada’s tax credit program in attracting filmmakers and new residents. “If you get 10,000 people to move here, if you get every studio and streamer to move here, it’s great business,” he said.
A Strong Community Connection
Wahlberg’s love for Las Vegas goes beyond business. He praised the city’s welcoming nature, saying, “People here treat me like one of their own, which is so nice.”
Through ventures like Flecha Cantina and Municipal Gym, Wahlberg hopes to foster community growth and enhance Las Vegas as a hub for entertainment and wellness.
