🎖 Las Vegas Gears Up to Honor Veterans with Special Events and Deals
Veterans Day, the annual holiday honoring those who have served in the U.S. military, will be observed this year on Monday, Nov. 11. Across Las Vegas, a variety of events, tributes, and special offers are planned to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members.
A Brief History of Veterans Day
Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday was established in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson to commemorate the end of World War I. It was later renamed Veterans Day to honor all U.S. military veterans, both living and deceased. As a federal holiday, it is marked by parades, memorial services, and nationwide tributes.
This year, Las Vegas will host several events and special deals for veterans and their families.
Key Events in Las Vegas
Vegas Golden Knights Military Appreciation Knight
The Vegas Golden Knights will honor service members during their game against the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m. on Veterans Day at T-Mobile Arena.
“I Salute” Signs: Fans in Sections 9 and 10 can fill out “I Salute” signs to honor veterans in their lives.
Charitable Support: City National Bank will present a check to The Folded Flag Foundation, a nonprofit funded by team owner Bill Foley.
Special Auction: Autographed jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to The Folded Flag Foundation.
Merchandise for a Cause: Custom jerseys, pucks, and t-shirts will also be available for purchase, supporting veterans’ initiatives.
Free Entry at Death Valley National Park
Death Valley National Park will waive entrance fees on Veterans Day to honor those who have served.
Recognizing Veterans’ Contributions: The park’s announcement highlighted the role veterans play in preserving national parks. For example, navy experts recently helped safely dispose of 60-year-old dynamite found by hikers in Death Valley.
Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix
Veterans visiting the Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix can enjoy a special deal: a free unlimited pass with the purchase of one or more unlimited passes of equal value.
Operating Hours: The park is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., providing a full day of family fun.
Nevada State Veterans Home Ceremony and Parade
The Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City will host a free public event to honor veterans.
Morning Ceremony and Parade: The event will feature a car show, along with a parade to celebrate veterans.
Afternoon Ceremony: Governor Joe Lombardo will deliver remarks, followed by a ceremonial flyover.
City of Henderson Veterans Day Ceremony
The City of Henderson will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. at Water Street Plaza Amphitheater.
Honoring Heroes: The event will include the presentation of names newly engraved on the Veterans Memorial Wall.
Music and Tributes: The Henderson Symphony Orchestra will perform, and the presentation of colors will take place.
Officials in Attendance: Mayor Michelle Romero and council members will join the ceremony to pay their respects.
Additional Opportunities for Veterans
Veterans Day isn’t just about ceremonies and parades; many local businesses offer special deals as a token of gratitude. From free meals to discounted services, veterans and active-duty service members can find a wide range of offers throughout Las Vegas.
🏈 UNLV Edges Hawaii in Volatile 29-27 Victory, Keeps Mountain West Hopes Alive
The UNLV Rebels endured a rollercoaster of weather and performance Saturday but managed to secure a narrow 29-27 win over Hawaii at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu. Battling through shifting conditions, including rain and strong winds, the Rebels brought home the Ninth Island Showdown trophy and kept their postseason aspirations intact.
“It was ugly, but good teams find a way to win,” coach Barry Odom said. “We had to really dig deep and overcome a number of things.”
Game Highlights and Key Performances
The Rebels (7-2, 3-1 Mountain West) have now won three of their last four rivalry games against Hawaii (4-6, 2-3) and extended their road winning streak to seven games, dating back to last season.
Hajj-Malik Williams (QB): Threw for 175 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 122 yards and another score.
Ricky White III (WR): Posted 128 receiving yards, a touchdown, and a blocked punt. White now has 13 career 100-yard receiving games, the second-most in UNLV history.
Jai’Den Thomas (RB): Rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
Three Takeaways from the Game
1. Missed Opportunities and Penalties
UNLV started strong, with defensive back Johnathan Baldwin intercepting Hawaii quarterback Brayden Schager on the second play of the game. This set up a 41-yard field goal by Caden Chittenden, giving the Rebels an early lead.
However, two first-quarter touchdowns were nullified by penalties:
DeAngelo Irvin Jr.’s 83-yard kickoff return was called back for holding.
Antonio Doyle Jr.’s 21-yard interception return was wiped out by a roughing-the-passer call.
These missed opportunities, coupled with two failed field goal attempts by Chittenden in the second quarter, left points on the board.
“We left 14 points out there,” Odom said. “If we had taken care of business, we could have broken the game open early.”
Despite the setbacks, the Rebels made key adjustments, with White’s 37-yard TD catch and Thomas’ 32-yard touchdown run providing crucial scores.
2. Special Teams Dominate Again
Special teams once again played a pivotal role for UNLV. Ricky White’s blocked punt in the first quarter resulted in a safety, giving the Rebels a 12-7 lead.
White’s four blocked punts this season lead the nation and extend his school record, bolstering his case for Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year.
In 2023, UNLV kicker Jose Pizano earned the award, and White could follow in his footsteps this year.
3. Mountain West Championship Hopes Remain Alive
UNLV’s win in Honolulu marked its first at Hawaii since 2016, and only the third road victory in the series over the past 16 meetings.
“We knew it was going to be a tough challenge,” Odom said. “Great credit to a team that found a way to go win in a place UNLV hasn’t won very often.”
The Rebels are now third in the Mountain West standings, trailing Boise State (8-1, 5-0) and Colorado State (6-3, 4-0). To secure a spot in the championship game, UNLV must win its remaining games and hope for some help from other teams.
Looking Ahead
UNLV returns to Allegiant Stadium next Saturday to host San Diego State (3-6, 2-2) in a crucial conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and the Rebels will be looking to build on their momentum as they chase a Mountain West title berth.

🎰 MGM Resorts and USO Honor Wounded Veterans with Patriotic Salute in Las Vegas
On Friday, dozens of wounded service members received a hero’s welcome as they arrived at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Hundreds of MGM Resorts employees lined up to form a "Wall of Gratitude," cheering and applauding the veterans and their families as part of the annual United Service Organizations (USO) Experience — Salute to the Troops.
For the 14th consecutive year, MGM Resorts International partnered with American Airlines to host military veterans wounded during their service. The honored guests were flown to Las Vegas for a five-night all-expenses-paid trip, complete with entertainment, fine dining, and sightseeing opportunities.
A Show of Gratitude
John Flynn, MGM Resorts’ senior vice president of Global Aviation and Security, emphasized the importance of honoring both the service members and their families.
“We want to be able to show our appreciation and recognition of service, both to our service members and to their families and caregivers,” Flynn said.
Flynn, a nearly 16-year veteran of active duty and current member of the Air Force Reserve, highlighted the broader impact of such events. He noted that showcasing gratitude publicly helps inspire future generations to consider military service.
“We’re really trying to recruit the next generation of service members,” Flynn said. “By celebrating and showing appreciation, we can demonstrate that serving in the military leads to a meaningful career and that the community values their sacrifices.”
Veterans Share Emotional Moments
Among the honored guests was retired U.S. Army helicopter pilot Gary Linfoot. Paralyzed in a crash landing during his 19th combat tour in Iraq, Linfoot is now an advocate for people with disabilities and works with organizations like the USO and the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Linfoot, a veteran of the Salute to the Troops event, reflected on the emotional significance of the welcome.
“It gets you right in the heart. It’s good to see,” he said. “Not too long ago, our Vietnam veterans didn’t get that kind of welcome. For this generation of warriors, the experience is much different, and it’s really uplifting.”
A Continuing Tradition
The USO Experience serves not only as a moment of appreciation but also as an opportunity to share stories of resilience and sacrifice. Events like this are a reminder of the importance of supporting those who have given so much in service to their country.
❎ Sen. Jacky Rosen Re-Elected, Outlines Priorities for Second Term
Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen delivered a victory speech Saturday afternoon at Teamsters Local 631 in Las Vegas, thanking her supporters for securing her re-election and outlining her legislative priorities for the next six years.
“I know we can keep making progress on issues that matter to us here in Nevada, that matter to us as a country, that matter to us as an American people,” Rosen told a cheering crowd of supporters.
Rosen, a Democrat, defeated Republican challenger Sam Brown by over 20,500 votes, winning 47.9% of the vote to Brown’s 46.4%, according to the Associated Press, with 96% of votes counted.
Rosen’s Deep Ties to Nevada
In her speech, Rosen reflected on her deep roots in the Silver State. “This may sound corny, but I love Nevada,” she said. “From the bright lights of the Vegas Strip to the darkest skies out in Ely.”
She recounted personal milestones, from meeting her husband and raising her daughter in Nevada to burying her parents there, underscoring her connection to the state and its people.
Brown Concedes, Reflects on Campaign
On Saturday morning, Sam Brown thanked his supporters and conceded the race.
“Serving as your nominee has been the honor of a lifetime,” Brown said in a statement. “Though the outcome is not what we hoped, I am deeply moved by the trust, dedication, and hope you’ve shown throughout this journey.”
He emphasized his vision for a renewed fight under the leadership of President-elect Donald Trump, signaling optimism for the future. “This is not a conclusion, but the beginning of a renewed fight for our values and our nation’s greatness,” Brown said.
Key Priorities for Rosen’s Next Term
Rosen outlined an ambitious agenda for her second term, pledging to tackle a broad range of issues:
Affordable Housing and Infrastructure: Rosen emphasized the need for more affordable housing and investment in infrastructure, including expanding broadband access.
Climate Change and Energy: She plans to push for climate solutions and continue her fight against price gouging by big oil companies.
Reproductive Rights and Healthcare: Rosen reiterated her commitment to protecting reproductive rights and strengthening healthcare programs like the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Social Security.
Gun Violence and Hate Crimes: She aims to curb gun violence and combat hate, particularly antisemitism.
Economic Development: Rosen highlighted the importance of job training, apprenticeships, and creating opportunities for working families.
“I’ll never back down from the fight against extreme Republicans in efforts to further roll back our rights,” she vowed.
A Bipartisan Approach
Despite her firm stance on several Democratic priorities, Rosen stressed her willingness to work across party lines.
“No matter how anyone cast their vote this election, I represent all Nevadans,” she said. “Winning elections isn’t just about beating the other side. It’s really about the progress that we can deliver.”
Looking Ahead
Rosen’s re-election secures another six years of her leadership in the Senate, where she will continue to advocate for policies aimed at improving the lives of Nevadans. Her victory reflects a closely contested race in a battleground state, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan collaboration in addressing the pressing challenges ahead.
