๐ Las Vegas Volunteers Aid Hurricane Survivors in North Carolina and Florida
In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Las Vegas residents stepped up to assist devastated communities in North Carolina and Florida. The two powerful storms, which struck within weeks of each other, left widespread destruction, displacing families and leaving many in desperate need of aid.
Hurricanesโ Devastation
Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, made landfall in Floridaโs Big Bend area on September 26, before tearing through the southeastern U.S., particularly North Carolina. It caused severe flooding and left a trail of destruction, resulting in nearly 230 deaths, half of which occurred in North Carolina. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm, struck near Sarasota, Florida, claiming 11 lives.
Among those affected were Jim and Allie Bourdy of Swannanoa, a suburb of Asheville, North Carolina. Their home was inundated by floodwaters, forcing them to seek refuge on their roof. Flooding rose rapidly, reaching rooftops and leaving homes submerged in mud and debris.
Las Vegas Responds
Several Las Vegas volunteers flew out to assist in recovery efforts. These included specialists in water and mold restoration, as well as Red Cross volunteers who helped manage evacuation shelters.
One volunteer, a mold and water restoration expert, worked in Swannanoaโs hardest-hit neighborhoods. His efforts focused on gutting water-damaged homes, removing mud, furniture, and drywall, and disinfecting frames to prevent mold growth. In just two weeks, he and his team helped restore 18 homes, offering their services free of charge.
Relief Work in Florida
Other volunteers headed to Florida to assist in Hurricane Miltonโs aftermath. Red Cross workers managed shelters in Tampa and Orlando, providing refuge for hundreds of evacuees.
In Tampa, one shelter provided a safe space for a single mother of three who had lost her job. With the help of shelter staff, she was able to secure a new position through an online interview. In Orlando, another volunteer managed an evacuation center that lost power at one point, improvising by opening classrooms and hallways to accommodate displaced families.
Medical tents were also set up to treat injuries, including those of a young boy whose feet were infected after losing his shoes during the storm.
Lessons Learned
The volunteers emphasized the importance of being on the ground before disasters strike, ensuring that residents are aware of shelter locations and evacuation plans. Their experiences reinforced their commitment to respond to future disasters.
For the Bourdys, the assistance provided by volunteers has been life-changing. With their home gutted and ready for reconstruction, they are now working with contractors to rebuild. Despite the challenges, they expressed immense gratitude for the outpouring of support.
Continuing Recovery Efforts
As recovery continues, the Bourdys and their community are seeking additional aid through fundraising efforts to cover reconstruction costs. Volunteers from Las Vegas remain ready to assist in future disasters, inspired by the resilience of the communities theyโve helped and the power of collective action in the face of adversity.
๐ Golden Knightsโ Winning Streak at T-Mobile Ends in 5-2 Defeat
The Vegas Golden Knightsโ perfect home record came to an end Monday night, as the Carolina Hurricanes handed them a decisive 5-2 defeat at T-Mobile Arena. The loss marked the first time the Knights have fallen on home ice this season, snapping their eight-game winning streak at home.
Despite the Knightsโ recent dominance in their own arena, the Hurricanes controlled the game from the outset, leaving little room for a comeback.
Early Deficit Sets the Tone
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first period. A deflected point shot gave Carolina their opening goal less than five minutes into the game. They doubled their advantage shortly after, capitalizing on a rebound to beat goaltender Adin Hill.
The Knights were outshot 16-4 in the first period, struggling to find any offensive rhythm. The early hole proved too deep to climb out of, especially with Carolinaโs goaltender putting up a strong performance.
Goaltending and Defensive Woes
Hill, who has been reliable for the Knights this season, had a tough night, allowing four goals on 21 shots before being pulled midway through the second period. His replacement made 12 saves in his debut, but the damage was already done.
Defensive lapses compounded the Knightsโ struggles. Several breakdowns, including a turnover that led to a shorthanded goal, left the team vulnerable. Vegasโ typically strong blue line was uncharacteristically shaky, with multiple defensemen finishing the game at a minus rating.
Offensive Struggles Continue
The Knights managed only two goals, one in the third period from their top line. Despite some late efforts, they couldnโt generate enough quality scoring chances to mount a serious comeback. Missing their captain and second-leading scorer for a second consecutive game, the offense lacked its usual potency.
Tribute for Former Teammate
The game also featured a special moment for a former Knight, now playing for Carolina. A tribute video highlighted his contributions to Vegas, including his role in their 2023 Stanley Cup victory.
Looking Ahead
The Knights will look to regroup during their upcoming road trip, which begins Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks. With the team aiming to stay competitive in the standings, they hope to have their captain back in the lineup soon to help stabilize both their offense and leadership.
Key Takeaways:
Defensive Struggles: The Knightsโ defense, usually a strong point, faltered with costly turnovers and missed assignments.
Goaltending Switch: Hill was pulled after allowing four goals, marking his toughest outing of the season.
Offensive Gaps: Missing key players, the Knights couldnโt keep up with Carolinaโs pace or pressure.

๐ F1 Race Prep Tightens Security and Alters Strip Traffic Flow
With less than two weeks until the Formula One Grand Prix transforms the Las Vegas Strip into a world-class racetrack, the city is finalizing preparations. From pedestrian bridges to road barriers, infrastructure is popping up along the iconic boulevard, drawing mixed reactions from tourists and locals alike.
Enhanced Security and Infrastructure
This yearโs race brings enhanced security measures for pedestrian areas. Unlike last year, when flimsy wrap screens on pedestrian bridges were easily removed by passersby, this yearโs solution includes sturdier, enclosed aluminum barriers. These installations aim to prevent unauthorized views of the race while ensuring pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
The barriers are accompanied by scaffolding and overhead lighting on several key pedestrian bridges, including:
Flamingo Road near Caesars Palace
The bridge between Treasure Island and The Venetian
The Sands Avenue bridge connecting Wynn and Palazzo
The final two bridges, near Bellagio and Horseshoe, as well as the Harmon Shops, are expected to be completed by Thursday.
Tourists React to Preparations
While some visitors are aware of the race and understand the need for infrastructure, others have expressed frustration at the obstructed views. Tourists walking the Strip have noted that while the preparations make sense for a major event, the visual impact detracts from their experience.
Roadwork and Traffic Updates
As race day approaches, officials have ramped up road construction efforts. Most track barriers, lighting rigs, and pedestrian bridges are now in place. Final installations, including SAFER barriers (soft walls designed for safety), will be completed this week.
To minimize disruptions, much of the work has been done overnight, reducing traffic impacts by 65% compared to last year. However, lane reductions remain in effect:
Las Vegas Boulevard: Reduced to one lane in each direction from midnight to noon through Friday.
Koval Lane: Closed entirely from Rochelle to Harmon avenues starting Saturday through Nov. 25.
The Bellagioโs Fountain Club, a premium hospitality platform overlooking the fountains, will see construction through Nov. 20.
Park-and-Ride Program for Workers
To ease congestion during race week, a park-and-ride program will begin on Nov. 20. Strip workers can park at designated lots, including the Las Vegas Convention Center, Rio, and The Orleans, with shuttles transporting them to work.
Post-Race Cleanup
Once the Grand Prix concludes, dismantling of the circuit will begin on the evening of Nov. 24. Officials anticipate that all race-related infrastructure will be removed by Christmas, restoring the Strip to its usual state.
