👨⚕️ Southern Nevada Health District Warns of Increased Norovirus in Las Vegas Valley
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has issued a warning to Las Vegas Valley residents about a rise in norovirus detection in the region’s wastewater. Often referred to as the “stomach flu,” norovirus is unrelated to the influenza virus but is a leading cause of gastrointestinal illness in the U.S.
Seasonal Spike in Norovirus Cases
Health officials note that norovirus cases typically surge during the cooler months, from November through April. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, while some individuals may also experience fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.
Most people recover from the virus within one to three days. However, certain groups, including older adults, young children, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, may be at a higher risk of severe illness.
How Norovirus Spreads
The virus spreads easily and rapidly through several pathways:
Direct contact with an infected person (e.g., caregiving or sharing utensils).
Consuming contaminated food or beverages.
Touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then placing unwashed hands in the mouth.
SNHD also cautions that individuals can remain contagious for up to two weeks or more after their symptoms resolve, increasing the likelihood of transmission even after recovery.
Health Precautions Ahead of the Holiday Season
“With the holiday season approaching, people will be gathering more frequently with family and friends,” said Dr. Fermin Leguen, District Health Officer for SNHD. “I encourage everyone to take steps to keep themselves and their loved ones healthy, including getting their updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines if they haven’t already done so.”
Preventative Measures
To reduce the risk of infection, SNHD recommends the following precautions:
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing or consuming food.
Disinfect surfaces with a bleach-based cleaner, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
Avoid preparing food for others while experiencing symptoms and for at least two days after recovery.
Properly wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly.
Staying Informed
The health district’s alert comes as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and address public health risks in the Las Vegas Valley. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local updates and to consult healthcare providers if they experience severe symptoms or complications.
🏒 Golden Knights Edge Ducks 3-2, Fathers Trip Tradition Continues
The Vegas Golden Knights secured a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday, fueled by a strong defensive effort and timely scoring. The win came in the first game of their annual fathers trip, where they’ve built a remarkable 10-0-1 record when the dads are in attendance.
Key Highlights:
Offensive Contributions: Nicolas Roy, Tomas Hertl, and Pavel Dorofeyev scored for the Knights, with defenseman Shea Theodore contributing two assists.
Adin Hill's Bounce Back: After a tough outing against Carolina, Hill stopped 22 shots, helping the Knights to their second road win of the season (2-3-2).
Defensive Adjustment: Vegas tightened up defensively, limiting Anaheim to five second-period shots and controlling the pace for most of the game.
Despite allowing an early goal, the Knights rallied, with Hertl and Dorofeyev’s third-period efforts sealing the win. Jack Eichel extended his point streak to four games, becoming the fastest player in franchise history to record 20 assists.
Three Takeaways:
Eichel’s Elite Playmaking
Eichel’s assist streak continues, now leading the team with 25 points in 16 games.Grigori Denisenko Called Up
Denisenko saw limited ice time in his season debut but added depth with Mark Stone still sidelined.Dorofeyev’s Hot Streak
Now leading the team with nine goals, Dorofeyev’s recent performance could earn him a steady spot on the top line.
Vegas aims to keep the momentum going as they head to Utah for their next matchup on Friday.

🏠 Two New Neighborhoods Approved for Summerlin, Adding 200 Homes
The Las Vegas Planning Commission has approved two new residential neighborhoods in Summerlin, a master-planned community in west Las Vegas. Developed by Howard Hughes Co., the projects will introduce approximately 200 new homes, reinforcing Summerlin’s reputation as one of the most sought-after areas in the region.
Details of the Developments
Richmond American Homes of Nevada is set to build a 76-lot single-family attached subdivision. Each lot will range from 2,880 to 4,533 square feet. The homes will feature rear-loaded designs, meaning garages will be accessible from alleys behind the homes, promoting a cleaner streetscape. Each unit will have two parking spaces, enhancing convenience for residents.
Tri Pointe Homes of Nevada will develop a 131-lot single-family residential subdivision. The lots in this neighborhood will range from 3,150 to 5,060 square feet and will also employ rear-loaded designs. As with the Richmond American subdivision, each home will offer two parking spaces per unit.
Location and Infrastructure
Both neighborhoods will be located on adjacent parcels of land off West Lake Mead Boulevard and Sunset Run Drive, areas that have remained undeveloped until now. This section of Summerlin is poised for significant growth, with these new homes contributing to the broader development vision of the community.
Although construction start dates have not been finalized, the approvals mark a critical step forward in the expansion of Summerlin.
Summerlin’s Growth and Appeal
Summerlin, spanning more than 22,500 acres, is known for its mix of residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, parks, and recreational facilities. It has become a premier destination for families and professionals alike, offering amenities such as top-rated schools, golf courses, and miles of walking and biking trails.
The master-planned community continues to attract buyers seeking a balance between suburban tranquility and urban accessibility. These new neighborhoods will add to Summerlin’s diverse housing options, catering to the growing demand for modern, well-designed homes in the area.
Broader Impacts
The new developments will contribute to the local economy, creating construction jobs and potentially boosting nearby businesses. As Summerlin expands, the community remains a vital part of Las Vegas’ broader growth strategy, helping to accommodate the city’s rising population.
With these latest additions, Summerlin is expected to further solidify its position as one of the fastest-growing and most desirable areas in the Las Vegas Valley.
