🦺 Holiday Safety Tips Highlighted at Clark County Fire and UMC Event

As the holiday season kicks into high gear, safety remains a top priority. The Clark County Fire Department and University Medical Center (UMC) hosted a safety demonstration event on Thursday at the Silverado Ranch Community Center, aiming to educate Las Vegas Valley residents on how to avoid common holiday hazards.

The event covered a wide range of safety practices, from cooking precautions to holiday decorating tips, with a focus on preventing fires and injuries during one of the busiest times of the year.

Kitchen Safety During the Holidays

Cooking is a leading cause of house fires, especially during the holidays when kitchens are bustling. Capt. Clark Lamping of the Clark County Fire Department provided essential advice on handling potential fire hazards in the kitchen.

One of the key recommendations is knowing how to respond to a grease fire:

  • Do not use water to extinguish a grease fire, as it can cause the fire to spread.

  • Avoid using a fire extinguisher, which could splash burning grease.

  • Instead, keep a lid nearby to smother the flames by placing it over the pan.

Lamping also advised leaving any food that catches fire inside the oven. “The oven is fireproof, and the fire will extinguish itself,” he said, stressing the importance of not opening the oven door.

To further reduce risks, officials recommend keeping children and pets out of the kitchen to avoid accidents such as tripping or spilling hot liquids.

Christmas Tree and Electrical Safety

Holiday decorations, particularly Christmas trees and lights, present another set of fire hazards. Officials urged residents to inspect all electrical cords for damage, such as fraying or burn marks, and to replace them if necessary.

Capt. Lamping highlighted another unexpected risk: pets. “For some reason, animals love to chew these extension cords, and they like to chew the trees,” he said. “Let’s try to keep our pets and our animals away from all of our electricity.”

Additionally, Christmas trees should be placed away from heat sources like fireplaces or radiators to prevent them from drying out and becoming highly flammable.

General Fire Safety Tips

Lamping emphasized several other precautions to keep homes safe during the holidays:

  • Test smoke detectors and ensure they are functioning properly.

  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets to prevent overheating.

  • Use flame-resistant decorations and avoid leaving candles unattended.

A Community Effort

The demonstration is part of a larger effort by local agencies to reduce holiday-related emergencies. Events like this one help raise awareness and provide practical solutions to common safety risks.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday season,” Lamping said. “Taking a few simple precautions can make all the difference.”

🏒 Adin Hill Reflects on Arizona Roots as Golden Knights Prepare for Utah Debut

For Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill, Friday’s game against the Utah Hockey Club will be a nostalgic and unique experience. Hill, who began his NHL career with the Arizona Coyotes, looks back fondly on his time with the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

“It’s going to be a little weird (playing them in Utah), but I think it’ll be cool,” Hill said. “It’s exciting for the league. You’ve got a new team in a big, growing city.”

From Arizona to Utah: A Franchise’s Journey

The Coyotes’ relocation to Salt Lake City in April was a significant shift for the franchise. After years of uncertainty surrounding their arena situation in Arizona, owner Alex Meruelo’s failed attempts to secure a permanent home led to the team’s sale. The franchise’s assets were purchased by Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, who rebranded the team as the Utah Hockey Club with the NHL’s approval.

The team quickly settled into its new identity, taking the ice just six months later. Despite the upheaval, Utah has shown resilience, posting a 7-6-3 record and sitting just one point out of a playoff spot.

Familiar Faces, Fresh Start

Many core players from the Coyotes remain with the Utah Hockey Club, including rising stars Dylan Guenther, Logan Cooley, and Maveric Lamoureux. Veteran leadership is provided by captain Clayton Keller, the Coyotes’ seventh overall pick in 2016.

Utah’s front office made bold moves in the offseason, acquiring defensemen Mikhail Sergachev from Tampa Bay and John Marino from New Jersey to solidify their blue line. These trades underscored the new ownership’s commitment to fielding a competitive team.

The club’s efforts have started to pay off, with highlights like Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka was outstanding, making 49 saves against one of the league’s top teams.

A New Chapter for Hockey in Utah

Friday’s game at Salt Lake City’s Delta Center marks the Golden Knights’ first visit to the city for a regular-season matchup. It’s a fresh stop on the NHL map, and Hill is looking forward to playing in the vibrant, growing market.

“I think it’ll be cool for all of us to walk into a new city, a nice building and play the game,” Hill said.

The Golden Knights have already faced Utah this season, winning 4-3 in overtime on Nov. 2 at T-Mobile Arena, thanks to Brett Howden’s game-winning goal.

Hockey’s Uncertain Future in Arizona

While Utah is finding its footing, some in the hockey world hope Arizona won’t be without a team forever. Dysin Mayo, a defenseman for the Silver Knights and former Coyote, experienced Arizona’s arena struggles firsthand.

“It felt like home to me,” Mayo said. “It’s sad to see them go. Hopefully, they get another franchise there. It’s important to get the right owners there and do it right this time.”

Mayo was part of the Coyotes’ transition from Gila River Arena in Glendale to Mullett Arena at Arizona State University in Tempe. Though he still maintains ties to the Phoenix area, he acknowledges the logistical and financial challenges the team faced.

Optimism for the Future

Despite the Coyotes’ departure, Hill and Mayo remain optimistic about hockey’s prospects in Arizona. In the meantime, they’re pleased to see their former teammates thriving in Utah.

“Hopefully, they’ve found a forever home in Utah,” Hill said, expressing hope that the franchise’s new chapter will be a successful and enduring one.

🎰 Wynn Resorts Stock Surges as Tilman Fertitta Becomes Largest Shareholder

Shares of Wynn Resorts Ltd. jumped by more than 8.6% on Thursday following the disclosure that Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta had significantly increased his stake in the company. Fertitta, now Wynn’s largest shareholder, holds a 9.9% stake, surpassing Elaine Wynn, the co-founder and former wife of the company’s namesake, Steve Wynn.

Fertitta’s Growing Influence

A Wednesday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that Fertitta, along with three subsidiaries he controls, owns approximately 10.9 million Wynn shares. This move positions him as a key player in the company’s future, though his investment is currently classified as passive.

Fertitta, known for his ownership of Landry’s Inc., the Golden Nugget casino franchise, and the NBA’s Houston Rockets, has not yet commented on his increased stake in Wynn. However, market observers are speculating that his involvement could grow more active in the coming months.

Stock Performance and Market Reaction

Wynn’s stock opened Thursday at $87.40 per share and closed at $93.22, continuing to rise in after-hours trading. The day’s trading volume exceeded three times the daily average, reflecting strong investor interest following the announcement.

This surge comes after a recent dip in Wynn’s stock price, which had crossed the $100 threshold in early October but declined following the release of third-quarter earnings. The earnings report highlighted weaker-than-expected performance from Wynn’s Macao properties and a cautious fourth-quarter outlook.

Despite these challenges, some analysts argue that Wynn remains undervalued. The company’s prospects are bolstered by its latest venture, Wynn Al Marjan Island in the United Arab Emirates. This luxury project is set to be a major draw, with analysts predicting it will face no regional gaming competition for at least three to five years.

Fertitta’s Broader Las Vegas Ambitions

Fertitta’s increased stake in Wynn isn’t his only major move in Las Vegas. In May, he announced plans for a new 43-story, 2,420-room resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The project, located on 6.2 acres at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue, marks a significant expansion of his footprint in the city’s competitive hospitality and gaming market.

Though Fertitta has yet to reveal details about this development, it underscores his long-term commitment to Las Vegas and the broader gaming industry.

Future Implications

While Fertitta’s stake in Wynn is currently passive, industry watchers are eager to see if he will leverage his position to influence the company’s strategic direction. His track record of success in the hospitality, gaming, and sports industries suggests he could bring valuable insights to Wynn’s operations.

For now, Fertitta’s investment is seen as a vote of confidence in Wynn’s long-term potential, particularly as it expands its international presence and explores new growth opportunities.

🏠 Las Vegas Gen Z Homebuyers Face Significant Barriers Amid Rising Housing Costs

Las Vegas ranks among the cities with the lowest homeownership rates for its youngest residents, according to a recent study by Construction Coverage. Homebuyers under the age of 25, often classified as Generation Z (those born after 1997), accounted for just 3.3% of home purchase loans in the Las Vegas Valley last year, compared to a national average of 5%.

Rising Age of First-Time Buyers

This trend aligns with a broader national pattern where the average age of first-time homebuyers has reached its highest point in decades. Several factors, including economic challenges and housing market dynamics, are contributing to this generational shift.

Local Demographics and Economic Factors

Lori Galarza, broker and owner of Las Vegas Re/Max Central, highlighted two key demographic trends affecting homeownership rates among young people in Las Vegas:

  1. Limited Generational Wealth:
“Vegas hasn’t been around for that long; it’s a newer state,” Galarza said. “I don’t know if there is the same type of generational wealth here.” Unlike older cities, Las Vegas lacks a deep-rooted base of multi-generational homeowners passing down wealth to younger generations.

  2. Transient Workforce:
Las Vegas’ economy is heavily reliant on the service and entertainment industries, which attract a mobile workforce. Many people move to the city for job opportunities but do not establish long-term roots, reducing their likelihood of buying homes.

Competition from Older Buyers

Another challenge for young buyers in Las Vegas is stiff competition from older generations. Baby boomers, who benefit from significant generational wealth and equity gained through earlier home purchases, are dominating the market.

Mike LaFirenza, spokesperson for Construction Coverage, noted that older buyers in Las Vegas account for 27.6% of home purchases, ranking third among large metropolitan areas. “This competition is particularly tough on younger homebuyers, who often lack pre-existing equity for their down payments, making their offers less competitive,” LaFirenza said.

Rising Home Prices and Affordability Gap

The median sale price for a single-family home in Southern Nevada is nearing an all-time high, further complicating the market for younger buyers. According to Las Vegas Realtors, home prices in the region are now more than 50% higher than pre-pandemic levels.

LaFirenza emphasized the impact of this price surge:
“Even with a relatively lower cost of living, the financial hurdles for younger buyers are substantial. With cost-of-living-adjusted incomes ranked 37th out of 53 large metros, Las Vegas’ affordability gap keeps ownership just out of reach for many in their early twenties.”

Broader Housing Crisis

The challenges for Gen Z homebuyers in Las Vegas are part of a larger housing crisis driven by multiple factors, including:

  • High Interest and Mortgage Rates: Rising interest rates have increased the cost of borrowing, making mortgages less affordable.

  • Land Scarcity and Population Growth: Limited land for development combined with a growing population has driven demand higher.

  • Slowdown in Homebuilding: A reduction in new housing construction has further tightened supply, contributing to rising prices.

Looking Ahead

As Las Vegas continues to grapple with its housing crisis, the barriers to homeownership for younger generations remain formidable. Addressing these challenges may require a combination of increased housing supply, more affordable financing options, and policies aimed at supporting first-time buyers.
