🎬 Warner Bros. Plans Major Film Studio in Las Vegas, Partnering with UNLV
The prospect of transforming Las Vegas into a film industry hub took a major step forward this week. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) executives announced plans for a 34-acre film and TV studio campus, dubbed Warner Bros. Studios Nevada, to be built at the Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in the city’s southwest.
This ambitious project, Warner Bros.’ third studio campus after those in Burbank and London, represents a significant investment in Nevada’s burgeoning entertainment industry.
A Partnership with UNLV
At the heart of this initiative is a partnership with UNLV’s College of Fine Arts, aimed at nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. During an event at UNLV’s Flora Dungan Humanities building, Warner Bros. executive Dan Dark underscored the company’s commitment to the community, donning a red UNLV cap to enthusiastic applause.
UNLV students will benefit directly from the project, with Warner Bros. offering five six-week, full-time internships each school year once the studios are operational. The strong turnout at Wednesday’s event — 300 attendees in a room designed for 200 — highlighted the local enthusiasm for the venture.
“You are a passionate team,” Dark said. “We are going to grow an industry, not quite from Ground Zero … But ensuring that we give an opportunity to every single person in all of our community. You guys are at the beginning of this journey.”
Paving the Way for Aspiring Filmmakers
The event featured a panel discussion moderated by UNLV Film Department Chair Heather Addison, with insights from industry veterans and students alike. Graduate student Marquise Hebbler shared his unconventional entry into the film world, sneaking onto a student production to make connections.
Hebbler’s experience highlights the value of structured opportunities like the proposed Warner Bros. internship program, which aims to provide students with a more direct path to industry roles.
“How do you get into the business?” Dark posed rhetorically. “Whatever the job opportunity or the experience opportunity you get, jump through that door.”
Legislative Support and Economic Impact
The success of Warner Bros. Studios Nevada depends on the passage of expanded film tax credits, a legislative push led by Sen. Roberta Lange (D-Las Vegas). The proposal seeks to increase annual film tax credits from the current $10 million to $95 million annually for 20 years, paving the way for an estimated 7,500 new jobs.
Nevada has already seen high-profile support for its film initiatives, with actors Mark Wahlberg and Jeremy Renner advocating for expanded tax credits.
Competing Projects
Warner Bros. isn’t the only player eyeing Las Vegas for film production. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Howard Hughes Corp. have proposed a $1.8 billion, 31-acre studio and mixed-use development near Town Center Drive and the 215. Both projects would share the benefits of the proposed tax credits, signaling a potential film industry boom in Southern Nevada.
A Vision for the Future
With an $8.5 billion investment on the table, Warner Bros.’ Nevada campus is poised to reshape the region’s economy and cultural landscape. UNLV College of Fine Arts Dean Nancy Uscher expressed optimism, calling the momentum “undeniable.”
If all goes as planned, Las Vegas could soon rival traditional entertainment hubs, providing both economic growth and creative opportunities for its residents.
🏒 Golden Knights Rally to Defeat Utah 4-2, Sweep Fathers Trip
The Vegas Golden Knights showed their resilience once again, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat the Utah Hockey Club 4-2 on Friday at Salt Lake City’s Delta Center. Despite missing key players and playing with only 10 forwards for most of the third period, the Knights extended their winning streak during their annual fathers trip to 11-0-1.
A Game They Had No Business Winning
Utah dominated the early stages of the game, outshooting Vegas 16-9 in the first period. The Knights leaned heavily on goaltender Adin Hill, who made 32 saves to keep the game within reach. Utah’s Logan Cooley opened the scoring at 11:16 of the first period, and the home team maintained control through much of the second.
However, Tomas Hertl sparked the Knights’ comeback with two power-play goals, one late in the second period and another early in the third. William Karlsson sealed the victory with a go-ahead goal in the final two minutes and an empty-netter to cap off the night.
Overcoming Adversity
The Knights faced significant challenges throughout the game. They started with an unconventional 11-forward, seven-defensemen lineup, which included defenseman Kaedan Korczak playing as a forward for the first time in his career.
Their situation worsened when center Nicolas Roy was handed 17 penalty minutes in the third period for responding to a neutral-zone hit on Hertl by Utah’s Ian Cole. Despite these setbacks, the Knights’ penalty kill held firm, and their power play continued to thrive, scoring in 13 of their 17 games this season.
Coach Bruce Cassidy praised his team’s resilience:
“Most guys want to play. That was the case tonight, and I think they relished the opportunity.”
Building Momentum
The Knights’ response to adversity comes at a crucial time. Following a tough 5-2 loss to Carolina earlier in the week, Vegas needed to rediscover its form, particularly with a challenging matchup against the surging Washington Capitals (11-4-1) looming on Sunday.
Three Takeaways from the Win
1. Hertl’s Power-Play Dominance
Tomas Hertl’s contributions on the man advantage have been pivotal. Six of his seven goals this season have come on the power play, solidifying the Knights’ unit as the second-best in the league. His net-front presence makes him a critical asset in high-pressure situations.
2. Adin Hill’s Bounce-Back Performances
After a rough outing against Carolina, Hill has rebounded with two strong performances, allowing just two goals in each game. With Ilya Samsonov still recovering from a lower-body injury, Hill’s consistency will be crucial.
3. Cole Schwindt’s Impact
Cole Schwindt continues to impress as a reliable depth player. He notched his fifth assist of the season on Karlsson’s game-winner, showcasing his vision and composure. His plus-6 rating in 14 games highlights his defensive responsibility and offensive potential.
What’s Next?
The Golden Knights return home to face the Capitals at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday. With momentum on their side, they’ll aim to continue their winning ways against one of the NHL’s hottest teams.
