👩‍🏭 Virgin Hotels Workers Strike Enters Fourth Day as Formula One Looms

The labor strike at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas continued into its fourth day Monday, with no negotiations scheduled between the company and Culinary Workers Union Local 226. Approximately 700 union members have walked off the job, demanding wage increases and improved benefits in a new five-year contract.

The strike comes at a critical time for Virgin Hotels, located on East Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road, as the city prepares for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix later this week.

No Progress in Negotiations

The strike began Friday after negotiations failed to produce a tentative agreement. According to Culinary Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge, Virgin’s latest offer fell far short of expectations, providing less than one-third of the $9.21 wage and benefit increases secured at comparable properties along the resort corridor.

“Virgin put a few more pennies on the table,” Pappageorge said, but it wasn’t enough to meet the union’s demands.

Virgin officials argue that the union’s proposed contract is “not economically sustainable” for the property. The company has urged the union to allow its members to vote on the proposed contract, which it claims prioritizes job security for its 1,710 team members.

Contingency Plans in Place

Virgin Hotels is moving forward with contingency plans to minimize disruptions during the strike. Over the weekend, the company lined up 660 replacement workers to fill temporary roles, including guest room attendants and environmental services positions.

A Virgin spokesperson confirmed that these temporary workers are being paid at the same wage rates as those in the expired union contract.

Meanwhile, the union has criticized the use of replacement workers, urging the public to avoid the property and warning of “scab” labor.

Financial Support for Strikers

Union members participating in the strike receive $500 per week from Culinary’s strike fund. This open-ended strike is the union’s first since a 10-day walkout at the Golden Gate hotel-casino in 2002.

The strike follows a successful campaign by Culinary last year, when the threat of a walkout before the inaugural Formula One race led to what the union called a “historic” contract at several major Strip properties.

Impacts on Business

The strike has already led to the temporary closure of two Virgin dining establishments: Casa Calavera, a Mexican restaurant, and The Kitchen at Commons Club.

Despite these disruptions, Virgin officials emphasized their commitment to keeping the property operational. “We believe in prioritizing the well-being of all our team members,” the company said in a statement, accusing the union of sacrificing off-Strip properties to maintain bargaining leverage.

What’s Next?

With the Formula One Grand Prix set to begin Thursday, the pressure is mounting for both sides to reach an agreement. For now, Virgin Hotels remains locked in a standoff with Culinary, and the strike shows no signs of ending soon.

🏈 Raiders Fall to Dolphins 34-19, Extend Losing Streak to Six Games

The Las Vegas Raiders showed glimpses of improvement in their retooled offense Sunday but ultimately fell short against the Miami Dolphins, extending their losing streak to six games. Despite a competitive effort, familiar struggles plagued the Raiders in the 34-19 defeat at Hard Rock Stadium.

Red-Zone Struggles Prove Costly

One of the most glaring issues for the Raiders (2-8) was their inability to convert in the red zone. The team scored just one touchdown in three trips inside Miami’s 20-yard line, while the Dolphins capitalized on three of their four red-zone opportunities. This disparity played a key role in the final score.

“It’s really frustrating,” said rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson. “You march 80 to 90 yards and you don’t score. That’s tough.”

A Solid but Incomplete Offensive Performance

In Scott Turner’s first game as interim offensive coordinator, the Raiders managed to keep pace with Miami in several statistical categories. Las Vegas finished just 25 yards short of Miami’s total yardage and averaged 5.3 yards per play compared to the Dolphins’ 5.5.

Quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 30 of 43 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw a critical fourth-quarter interception and missed several opportunities for big plays.

Head coach Antonio Pierce emphasized the need for a more aggressive approach, particularly near the goal line. “You got to take shots to the end zone,” Pierce said. “Throwing the ball short, you love to see all the [yards after catch], but you have better opportunities when you throw the ball in the end zone.”

Minshew to Start Against Broncos

Despite the team’s struggles, Pierce confirmed Minshew will remain the starter for the upcoming game against the Denver Broncos. However, the coach stopped short of committing to Minshew beyond this week.

Second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who has been on injured reserve since suffering a broken thumb in October, is eligible to return after the Broncos game, potentially adding competition at the position.

A Team Still Fighting

While the Raiders’ playoff hopes are slim, players remain determined to fight through the adversity.

“We’re down, man,” Minshew said, “but we’re not sending it in. We practice hard… I feel like if we continue on our process, continue trying to get better, it’s going to break for us.”

Defensive end Maxx Crosby echoed this sentiment, praising the team’s work ethic. “Guys show up on Monday right after the game and work out. The whole team does. Tuesday as well, so we’re showing up every single day, guys are looking to improve.”

Bright Spot: Carlson’s Consistency

One positive for the Raiders has been kicker Daniel Carlson, who continues to deliver steady performances. Carlson made both of his field-goal attempts Sunday, marking his 74th career game with a perfect field-goal percentage, the second-most in NFL history for a kicker’s first 105 games.

Since joining the Raiders in 2018, Carlson has become one of the league’s most reliable kickers, trailing only Justin Tucker in games with a perfect field-goal record.

Looking Ahead

The Raiders will try to snap their losing streak next Sunday against the Denver Broncos. With some offensive improvements and a defense that’s been competitive, they’ll aim to put together a complete game to get back in the win column.

Harry Reid Airport Introduces Reserved Parking Ahead of Holiday Rush

Harry Reid International Airport has launched an online reserved parking program, aiming to streamline travel during the busy holiday season. The new system offers travelers the option to secure parking spots in advance, ensuring peace of mind and convenience during peak travel times.

Reserved Parking Details

The program provides 636 reserved spaces across both terminals:

  • Terminal 1: 286 reserved slots on Level 2M of the parking garage, priced at $28 per day.

  • Terminal 3: 350 reserved slots on Level 1 of its parking garage, priced at $21 per day.

In comparison, the daily maximum for standard long-term parking in these garages is $18, while economy parking—which requires a shuttle ride to the terminals—costs $12 per day.

Benefits of the New System

Travelers can book their spots through the airport’s dedicated website, parking.harryreidairport.com, and modify their reservations up to two hours before their scheduled arrival.

“Upgrades such as this provide our guests the reassurance of convenient, prime parking so that they can plan ahead and save time,” said Clark County Aviation Director Rosemary Vassiliadis.

Addressing Peak Travel Demands

The reserved parking option is designed to alleviate stress during busy travel periods, especially holidays when public parking often reaches capacity.

“Users of the system are paying for the assurance that parking would be available at the airport’s busiest times,” said Luke Nimmo, a spokesperson for the airport.

The higher demand at Terminal 1 accounts for its slightly higher daily reserved parking fee of $28, compared to $21 at Terminal 3.

Modernizing Airport Services

The initiative reflects a broader effort to modernize the airport’s infrastructure and enhance the overall travel experience. “We have been working diligently to look for ways to modernize all of our facilities, both in terms of infrastructure and technology,” Vassiliadis added.

😋 Las Vegas Restaurants Brace for Formula One’s Return

As Formula One gears up for its second Las Vegas Grand Prix, independent restaurants across the city are navigating the event with mixed feelings. After a challenging inaugural race last year, many eateries are weighing whether to embrace or avoid the potential chaos, with questions lingering about how F1 will impact business.

Closures and Caution

Some restaurants are choosing to sit out the race entirely. Bramàre, a modern Italian eatery on Paradise Road, plans to close during F1 weekend.

“We talked exhaustively with other businesses from last year,” said co-owner Constantin Alexander. “Most locals we’ve spoken to want nothing to do with the race due to traffic and general frustration with F1.”

Despite the decision, Alexander estimates the closure will result in $20,000 to $30,000 in lost revenue. “If we thought we could even come close to breaking even, we’d stay open. But we don’t think it’s feasible.”

Bar Code Burgers: A Missed Opportunity

At Bar Code Burgers, located on East Flamingo Road about two miles from the F1 Paddock, last year’s race week resulted in the worst sales of the year.

“F1 has no interest from our regulars, who are mainly sports fans,” said managing partner Cody Tomboli.

While the restaurant will remain open, it won’t stay late to broadcast the race. “We wanted to lean into it, but the timing just doesn’t work for us,” Tomboli added.

Chinatown’s Traffic Woes

For businesses in Chinatown, which sits just west of the Strip, race-related traffic and detours pose a significant challenge.

“Every single business is going to suffer,” said Joe Muscaglione, co-owner of ShangHai Taste and operator of the Chinatown Vegas blog. He pointed to disruptions on the 203 bus route, which typically brings visitors from the Strip. “It’s a nightmare unless you’re coming from the west side of town. People might just stay put.”

Muscaglione is skeptical about the overall benefit of F1. “I think this helps a small amount of people.”

Diminished Hype at Golden Steer

For Golden Steer Steakhouse, a classic Vegas institution near the Strip, this year’s F1 buzz feels noticeably muted.

“Last year, companies were making a big splash,” said co-owner Amanda Signorelli. “This year, there’s less energy and fewer international visitors booking large parties.”

While reservations for groups of eight or more have declined, Signorelli noted that à la carte business for smaller parties remains steady. “Locals are less afraid of the traffic this year, but there’s still some hesitation.”

Signorelli is also curious about F1’s long-term impact on Las Vegas. “What will be the defining element of Formula One in this city?”

A Different Scene Downtown

Downtown’s Arts District offers a stark contrast to the Strip’s congestion. Main St. Provisions, a popular spot in the area, plans to capitalize on its relative isolation from the F1 chaos.

“We want people to race to the Arts District,” said owner Kim Owens. “We’re outside the F1 footprint, and parking is available.”

Owens plans to promote the district’s accessibility on social media, encouraging locals and visitors to explore its restaurants and bars during the race weekend. “Grab a glass of wine and do a nosh-around. We’re here, we’re serving great food, and we’re easy to get to.”

The Uncertain Road Ahead

As F1’s return looms, Las Vegas restaurants are adopting diverse strategies, from full closures to cautious optimism. Whether they’ll reap rewards or endure losses remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the race’s impact on the city’s dining scene will continue to evolve.
