🚧 Tear-Down of Las Vegas Grand Prix Circuit Underway, Completion Targeted by Christmas
With the conclusion of the second annual Las Vegas Grand Prix, crews have begun dismantling the extensive infrastructure of the 3.8-mile street circuit. The process, involving the removal of barriers, lighting, temporary structures, and bridges, is expected to significantly impact traffic through the heart of Las Vegas. The majority of the work is planned to be finished by Christmas, with certain elements extending into late December.
Key Areas and Timeline of Work
Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip):
Barrier Removal: 24-hour lane closures began Sunday at 9 p.m. and will continue until Wednesday at 9 p.m. between Spring Mountain Road and Harmon Avenue. One lane in each direction remains open.
Lighting Removal:
Overnight closures (1 a.m. to 9 a.m.) between Spring Mountain and Fashion Show Drive, Wednesday through Dec. 2.
Midnight to 9 a.m. nightly closures from Dec. 1 to Dec. 6 between Spring Mountain and Harmon.
Bellagio Fountain Club: Dismantling of the temporary structure began Sunday and will last until Dec. 27, causing the closure of two southbound lanes between Flamingo Road and Bellagio Drive. Traffic access to the Bellagio remains open.
Sands Avenue:
24-hour lane restrictions are in place through Wednesday, Dec. 6, for barrier and lighting removal. One lane remains open in each direction during the work.
Koval Lane:
Sidewalks will close Dec. 6-20 to facilitate the removal of a temporary pedestrian bridge.
Flamingo Road and Koval Lane Intersection:
Bridge Removal: Full closure of the intersection from Dec. 15 to Dec. 21 as crews dismantle the temporary vehicular bridge. Sidewalks in the area will also close, but access to nearby businesses will be maintained.
Harmon Avenue:
Nightly lane closures (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) began Sunday and continue through Dec. 6 between Harmon and Audrie Street for barrier removal.
Additional closures (9 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday-Friday) are scheduled from Dec. 1 to Dec. 13 at the Harmon and Audrie intersection. Flaggers will manage traffic during the closures, and the intersection will remain open on weekends.
Strip Pedestrian Bridges:
Enclosure Removal:
Venetian-Sands South and Planet Hollywood-Cosmopolitan pedestrian bridges will close nightly from midnight to 9 a.m., Dec. 2-4.
Bellagio-Horseshoe and Harmon Shops-Harmon East bridges will face overnight closures on Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 9.
Minimizing Traffic Disruptions
Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to plan for delays and detours. A dedicated traffic website and a text service (text F1LV to 31996) provide regular updates on closures and construction progress.
Impact and Long-Term Vision
The Las Vegas Grand Prix brought global attention to the city but left behind an extensive temporary infrastructure that requires careful dismantling. While some structures will persist for future F1 events, such as the pit building, the dismantling of barriers, lighting, and bridges aims to restore normal traffic flow by late December.
These efforts not only pave the way for future races but also highlight Las Vegas' growing role as a premier destination for world-class motorsport events.
🏎 Max Verstappen Clinches Fourth F1 Title as George Russell Dominates Las Vegas Grand Prix
The 2024 Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix offered high-speed drama on the iconic Las Vegas Strip, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claiming his fourth consecutive world title and Mercedes driver George Russell delivering a dominant victory. Held on the 17-turn, 3.8-mile circuit, the race provided thrills, surprises, and milestones as the season neared its conclusion.
Verstappen Secures Title Despite Fifth-Place Finish
Max Verstappen, who won the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023, returned to solidify his legacy by clinching the 2024 F1 World Championship during Saturday’s race. Despite finishing fifth, the Dutch driver amassed enough points to secure the title with two races remaining in the season.
“It was a very challenging season, and as a person, at times it was very challenging,” Verstappen said. “This season taught me a lot of lessons, and that makes it very special.”
Verstappen’s 2024 campaign differed from his dominant runs in 2022 and 2023. Early in the season, he seemed poised for another runaway victory, winning seven of the first ten races. However, a mid-season slump, including a 10-race winless streak, allowed McLaren’s Lando Norris to close the gap. A November victory in Sao Paulo helped Verstappen regain momentum and ultimately clinch the title.
Now a four-time champion, Verstappen joins an elite group of drivers tied with Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel. Only Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher (seven titles each) and Juan Manuel Fangio (five) have won more.
“To be standing here as a four-time world champion is just incredible,” Verstappen said.
Mercedes Secures 1-2 Finish in Dominant Performance
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton delivered a commanding performance for Mercedes, claiming first and second place, respectively. Russell, starting from pole, led every lap for his second win of the season, finishing 7.313 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
“It’s been a real surprise seeing how strong our pace has been,” Russell said. “It was just a case of managing my pace, managing in the right corners, and bringing it home.”
Hamilton, who started 10th after a tough qualifying session, charged through the field for his best finish since early October. After 12 seasons with Mercedes, Hamilton’s impressive recovery drive provided a fitting send-off as he prepares to join Ferrari in 2025.
“That was honestly one of the most enjoyable races,” Hamilton said.
The result marked Mercedes’ first 1-2 finish since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, showcasing renewed competitiveness after a challenging season.
Constructors' Championship Battle Tightens
While Verstappen secured the Drivers’ Championship, the fight for the Constructors’ Championship remains undecided. McLaren, leading the standings with 608 points, holds a 24-point advantage over Ferrari (584) with two races left.
Ferrari gained ground in Las Vegas thanks to Carlos Sainz Jr.’s third-place finish and Charles Leclerc’s fourth. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri placed sixth and seventh, respectively, to keep their team in the lead.
“We just need to go into the last two races trying to maximize whatever we have,” Sainz said.
The Las Vegas podium was a redemption for Sainz, who crashed in last year’s race after hitting a manhole cover during practice.
“I was hoping Las Vegas had something to offer me after what happened last year. I’ll take a podium,” he said.
Key Takeaways from the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix
1. Verstappen’s Hard-Fought Title
Unlike previous seasons, Verstappen faced challenges throughout 2024, including a competitive field and mid-season struggles. His ability to adapt and overcome made this championship particularly rewarding.
2. Mercedes Resurgence
Russell and Hamilton showcased Mercedes’ potential with their 1-2 finish, offering hope for a stronger 2025 season. Hamilton’s farewell to Mercedes added an emotional layer to the team’s success.
3. Ferrari vs. McLaren for the Constructors’ Title
With just 24 points separating the top two teams, the final two races promise to deliver a thrilling conclusion to the Constructors’ Championship battle.
Looking Ahead
As the F1 season nears its end, all eyes turn to the remaining races to decide the Constructors’ Championship. Meanwhile, Las Vegas has firmly established itself as a marquee event on the F1 calendar, providing a unique blend of glamour and motorsport.
