๐Ÿ›ฃ I-15 Closures Scheduled for Early December Near Las Vegas Resort Corridor

Las Vegas motorists should prepare for two overnight closures on Interstate 15 next week as part of ongoing improvements to the Active Traffic Management (ATM) system.

Closure Details

  • Southbound I-15:

    • When: 9 p.m. Dec. 4 to 5 a.m. Dec. 5

    • Where: Between Flamingo and Russell roads

    • Ramp Closures:

      • Flamingo on-ramp to I-15 southbound

      • Harmon Avenue on-ramp to I-15 southbound

      • I-15 southbound off-ramp to Tropicana eastbound and westbound

      • I-15 southbound flyover ramp to Tropicana eastbound

      • I-15 southbound off-ramp to Russell

Traffic Advisory: I-15 northbound will remain open but reduced to three lanes between Hacienda Avenue and Flamingo during these hours.

  • Northbound I-15:

    • When: 9 p.m. Dec. 5 to 5 a.m. Dec. 6

    • Where: Between Russell Road and Tropicana Avenue

    • Ramp Closures:

      • I-215 Beltway westbound ramp to northbound I-15 (access to Frank Sinatra Drive and Russell will remain open)

      • Las Vegas Boulevard ramp to northbound I-15

Traffic Advisory: I-15 southbound will remain open but reduced to three lanes between Flamingo and Hacienda during these hours.

Purpose of the Closures

The closures will allow crews to install and test dynamic LED Active Traffic Management (ATM) signs as part of the $305 million I-15/Tropicana project. These signs, introduced to Nevada in 2019 with Project Neon, provide real-time traffic updates, speed adjustments, and lane-use instructions to improve safety and efficiency.

Benefits of the ATM System

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT):

  • The ATM system helps reduce secondary crashes by up to 30% in high-traffic areas.

  • It dynamically adjusts speed limits and offers lane-use guidance based on live traffic conditions.

The system includes 10 new signs for the I-15 corridor, with each weighing an average of 46,000 pounds, and some larger signs weighing up to 105,000 pounds.

Motorist Recommendations

Drivers are advised to plan alternative routes during the closures and to stay updated on traffic conditions via NDOT or local traffic reporting services.

๐Ÿ’ Golden Knights Overcome Challenges for a Successful Road Trip

The Vegas Golden Knights (14-6-2) are closing out their season-long, five-game road trip with a commendable 3-1 record, showing resilience in the face of injuries and a demanding schedule. With one game remaining against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, the team has already guaranteed a winning record for the trip, showcasing their ability to adapt and succeed under difficult circumstances.

Resilient Wins on the Road

While their victories have come against Eastern Conference teams outside of playoff contentionโ€”the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, and Philadelphia Flyersโ€”the Knights have proven they can handle the schedule in front of them. Each win highlighted different aspects of the teamโ€™s resolve:

  • Bouncing Back in Ottawa (Nov. 21): After being shut out by the Toronto Maple Leafs just 24 hours earlier, the Knights displayed mental toughness by rebounding with a strong performance to beat the Senators.

  • Offensive Explosion in Montreal (Nov. 23): A five-goal second period propelled Vegas to a dominant win over the Canadiens, showcasing their ability to generate offensive firepower when needed.

  • Comeback Victory in Philadelphia (Nov. 25): The Knights rallied from behind to defeat the Flyers 5-4 in a shootout, a win fueled by determination and clutch performances from their key players.

These wins came despite a tight schedule that has prevented the team from practicing between games for over a week.

Navigating Key Absences

The Knightsโ€™ success is even more impressive given the number of critical players currently sidelined. Three defensemenโ€”Alex Pietrangelo, Zach Whitecloud, and Ben Huttonโ€”are out with upper-body injuries. Additionally, the team has been without captain Mark Stone for nine games due to a lower-body injury.

Center William Karlsson also missed Mondayโ€™s game against Philadelphia to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Despite these setbacks, the team has continued to find ways to win.

โ€œItโ€™s a tough time to get your game in order and practice those things, but credit to our guys,โ€ said coach Bruce Cassidy. โ€œWeโ€™ve won three in a row without that, so theyโ€™re finding ways to get it done.โ€

An Opportunity for a Signature Win

The Knightsโ€™ performance against elite teams has been mixed. Of their 14 wins, 10 have come against teams that would miss the playoffs if the season ended today. Conversely, six of their eight losses have been against the top six teams in the Eastern Conference, raising questions about how the Knights stack up against stronger competition.

Wednesdayโ€™s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche (12-10-0) provides an opportunity to secure a statement victory. The Knights dominated the Avalanche 8-4 in the season opener, but Colorado, winners of six of their last seven games before a recent loss to Tampa Bay, will likely be looking for redemption.

The Knightsโ€™ test doesnโ€™t end there. They return home to face the NHL-leading Winnipeg Jets (18-4-0) on Friday at T-Mobile Arena. With Winnipegโ€™s high-flying offense and stingy defense, the matchup promises to be a significant challenge.

Building Momentum Amidst Adversity

Despite their strong record, the Knights know thereโ€™s room for growth, especially against tougher opponents. Center Jack Eichel, who has been a key contributor during the road trip, stressed the importance of focusing on results.

โ€œNot every gameโ€™s going to be a masterpiece, but youโ€™ve just got to find a way to get two points,โ€ Eichel said.

As the Knights work through injuries and adjust to the demands of a packed schedule, they are proving their resilience and depth. With 14 winsโ€”second-most in the Western Conferenceโ€”they remain firmly in contention for a top playoff spot. The next two games will serve as critical measuring sticks for a team aiming to cement itself as one of the NHLโ€™s elite.

Looking Ahead

The Golden Knights are focused on maintaining momentum as they return to full strength. Their ability to secure points in challenging situations bodes well for their long-term success. While the road trip has tested their depth and endurance, upcoming matchups against the Avalanche and Jets will provide the perfect stage to showcase their potential as Stanley Cup contenders.

๐Ÿ  Rising Rent Costs in Las Vegas Valley Create Housing Challenges

The cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment in the Las Vegas Valley has surged by over $400 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting growing affordability challenges for residents.

Rent Increases Over Time

In early 2020, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the area was $1,145.68, according to Numbeo, which compiles data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Consumer Price Index. By the end of October 2024, that average had jumped to $1,547โ€”a $402 increase in less than five years. For context, the average rent for a one-bedroom in the valley was just $640 in 2012, illustrating the sharp upward trajectory over the last decade.

Zillow places the median rental price for apartments of all sizes in the valley at $2,000, reflecting a $31 year-over-year increase.

Temporary Dip in Rental Rates

While rent prices have generally risen, there was a brief decline in late summer due to an influx of new rental properties entering the market. Redfin reported that the median asking rent for all bedroom counts was $1,475 at the end of September, down 1.5% from August. However, this was still a 1.7% increase compared to September 2023.

Similar rental rate decreases have been observed in other Sun Belt cities, with Jacksonville, Florida (-11.3%), Raleigh, North Carolina (-10.6%), and San Diego (-10.4%) experiencing significant month-over-month declines.

Financial Strain for Renters

The rising costs have made housing unaffordable for many Las Vegas residents. A February Zillow study revealed that households in the valley now need an annual income of at least $69,810 to afford average rent pricesโ€”well above the median household income in the region.

A nationwide study by Redfin underscores the struggles faced by low-income renters:

  • 74% of people earning under $50,000 annually report difficulties affording housing.

  • 25% have skipped meals to make rent payments.

  • 25% have sold personal belongings to cover housing costs.

The Broader Picture

Las Vegasโ€™ rent increases mirror a national trend of rising housing costs, especially in popular metropolitan areas. The city has been a magnet for growth, driven by its strong entertainment sector and lower taxes, which has attracted both residents and businesses. However, this growth has also exacerbated housing demand, driving prices higher and placing additional pressure on renters.

Conclusion

The sharp rise in rent prices since the pandemic began reflects broader economic trends and the challenges of housing affordability in the Las Vegas Valley. While temporary decreases in rental rates from new supply offer some relief, long-term solutions are needed to address the widening gap between wages and housing costs.
