🎗️ Three Square, Catholic Charities, and Salvation Army Lead Holiday Meal Efforts

Southern Nevada Organizations Prepare to Feed Thousands for Thanksgiving

Three organizations in Southern Nevada—Three Square, Catholic Charities, and the Salvation Army—are stepping up to address food insecurity this Thanksgiving, providing meals and resources to thousands of residents in need. Their collective efforts highlight the community’s commitment to ensuring that no one goes hungry during the holiday season.

Three Square’s Commitment to Fighting Hunger

Three Square, the region’s largest food bank, has distributed an astounding 49 million pounds of food in the 2023 fiscal year. According to Maurice Johnson, the organization’s director of food sourcing and relationships, their work is critical in addressing the needs of 341,000 food-insecure people across Southern Nevada.

“Food insecurity means that a person doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from,” Johnson explained. “To put that in perspective, that’s one in seven adults and one in five children.”

In addition to food distribution, Three Square is running a holiday match program from November 1 to December 31. Every dollar donated during this time is matched by a donor, doubling the impact. The funds raised will not only support this year’s efforts but also help plan for future holiday meal drives.

Catholic Charities Prepares Thousands of Meals

At Catholic Charities, preparations for Thanksgiving began as early as February. The organization is gearing up to serve 700 people directly and provide food for thousands more through their pantry services. According to Leslie Carmine, Catholic Charities’ director of media and community relations, their goal is to give families the means to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal at home.

To meet the demand, the charity has collected an impressive stockpile, including 3,000 turkeys, 300 pounds each of garlic mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, and green bean casserole, 20 gallons of turkey gravy, 20 gallons of cranberry sauce, and 700 slices of pumpkin pie. Large freezers help store these supplies, but when space runs out, cash donations are used to buy food in bulk or at discounted rates.

“For those that are visiting our food pantry, hopefully, we’re able to give them enough items so they’re able to make their own Thanksgiving meal at home,” Carmine said.

Last week, Catholic Charities delivered frozen Thanksgiving meals to 2,450 home-bound seniors, part of their commitment to ensuring that seniors—a growing demographic among their clients—are not left behind.

Salvation Army: Serving Families and Providing Support

The Salvation Army is also making significant contributions this Thanksgiving. The organization anticipates serving meals to 1,200 families while providing Thanksgiving dinner at their Owens Avenue homeless campus.

In addition to food, the Salvation Army is helping individuals reconnect with family by providing bus vouchers for travel during the holiday weekend. Major Harold Laubach Jr., the divisional secretary for Clark County, noted that rising food and housing costs have increased the demand for their services.

“We have a growing number of senior citizens that are our clients now in all of our programs,” Laubach Jr. said. “You don’t have to go very far when it comes to the increase in food prices recently. With increases in food prices, housing costs, and rent, people just need assistance.”

The Power of Donations

All three organizations emphasize the importance of donations—both monetary and food-based—in making these efforts possible. Monetary donations are particularly impactful because they allow organizations to purchase food in bulk, stretching each dollar further.

“If it’s a monetary donation, that’s where we can kind of stretch that a little bit, because we’d be able to buy more than someone going to just the regular grocery store and purchasing,” Laubach Jr. said.

A Season of Gratitude

Despite the challenges of rising costs and growing demand, the leaders of these organizations are proud of their ability to serve the community. Carmine expressed the gratitude of families who receive assistance, saying, “Most of the families are very, very appreciative and very grateful to have what it takes to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table since everything has become really challenging and more expensive.”

As these organizations work tirelessly to meet the needs of Southern Nevadans, they continue to exemplify the spirit of Thanksgiving, ensuring that thousands can enjoy the holiday with dignity and a warm meal.

🏈 Raiders Activate QB Aidan O’Connell, Set to Start vs. Chiefs

The Las Vegas Raiders have activated quarterback Aidan O’Connell from injured reserve, paving the way for him to start in Friday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. O’Connell, who suffered a fractured right thumb, has been sidelined for the past four games. However, after returning to practice this week, he appears ready to lead the Raiders’ offense in a crucial divisional matchup.

The roster moves come amidst a challenging week for the team, particularly at the quarterback position. Veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew has been placed on injured reserve following a season-ending collarbone injury sustained during Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. The Raiders also lost starting cornerback Jakorian Bennett to injured reserve due to a shoulder injury, further testing their depth.

In a bid to bolster the active roster, the Raiders signed wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. The 2021 second-round draft pick, originally selected by the Carolina Panthers, has been part of the Raiders’ practice squad since October 22. He has made one appearance for the team so far and is expected to provide additional options for O’Connell in the passing game.

Looking ahead to Friday, two more players will step up from the practice squad to fill key roles. Cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly, a Bishop Gorman High School alumnus, and running back Sincere McCormick are slated to be elevated for game day. McCormick, in particular, is expected to take on a significant workload after an impressive showing against Denver, where he rushed for 33 yards on five carries. His increased role is necessitated by the absence of running back Zamir White, who will miss Friday’s game with a quad injury. Meanwhile, fellow running back Alexander Mattison is listed as questionable due to an ankle issue.

The team’s adjustments highlight the challenges of managing injuries late in the season as the Raiders continue to fight for competitiveness in the AFC West.

🥣 Gjelina Expands to Las Vegas, Opening Dec. 26 at The Venetian

California’s Gjelina Brings Its Farm-to-Table Flair to the Las Vegas Strip This Winter

Southern California’s renowned Gjelina restaurant is set to make its debut on the Las Vegas Strip this winter. Known for its commitment to locally sourced ingredients and sustainable practices, Gjelina will open its doors on December 26 at The Venetian Resort, according to the property’s website.

A Storied California Heritage

Gjelina first opened in 2008 on Venice Beach’s iconic Abbot Kinney Boulevard. It was conceived in founder Fran Camaj’s apartment, a modest beginning for what would become a culinary mainstay. The restaurant is named in honor of Camaj’s mother, reflecting a personal touch that has carried through its operations and ethos.

With its Las Vegas location, Gjelina marks its third outpost, joining the original Venice Beach restaurant and a second location in New York City. The Las Vegas expansion brings its celebrated California cuisine to a prime spot along Restaurant Row at The Venetian, further diversifying the Strip’s dining scene.

A Menu Rooted in Freshness and Creativity

The opening menu at Gjelina Las Vegas promises an eclectic mix of raw bar offerings, charcuterie, vegetarian dishes, and heartier fare, showcasing the restaurant’s philosophy of balancing simplicity and bold flavors.

Highlights from the raw and charcuterie section include:

  • Kumiai oysters from California’s pristine waters

  • Shigoku oysters from the coast of Washington State

  • Prosciutto with fuyu persimmon and burrata, blending sweet and savory elements

Vegetarians will find plenty to enjoy, with a dozen plant-focused options such as:

  • Barley and lentil soup

  • Green curry delicata squash

  • Fried farro with bok choy, black garlic, tamari, and chili paste

For those craving more substantial dishes, Gjelina offers:

  • Orecchiette pasta with short rib and rapini

  • Roasted chicken for two

  • A shareable lamb shoulder platter with grilled flatbread and fennel salad

Signature Pizza with a Twist

Pizza lovers can savor Gjelina’s signature dough creations, which emphasize high-quality ingredients and inventive combinations. The menu features more than a dozen options, including:

  • Pomodoro pizza with confit tomato, basil, and oregano

  • Gruyère and fromage blanc pizza topped with caramelized onion and arugula

  • Guanciale pizza, showcasing mozzarella, Castelvetrano olives, Fresno chiles, and tomato

Each dish reflects the ethos that has made Gjelina a favorite in its other locations: a focus on seasonal, sustainably sourced ingredients paired with expert preparation.

A Culinary Experience Worth Anticipating

Gjelina’s arrival on the Las Vegas Strip adds a fresh layer of sophistication to The Venetian’s already robust dining offerings. With its California roots and global reputation, the restaurant is poised to become a must-visit destination for food lovers seeking innovative yet approachable cuisine.

🪂 Thrills Coming to Fremont Street: Neonopolis Plans Skydiving and Rooftop Rides

The Neonopolis retail and entertainment complex, located near the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas, is setting its sights on becoming a premier destination for thrill-seekers. The rooftop of the complex is slated to feature a skydiving attraction, with the planned opening of Aerodium, a cutting-edge skydiving simulator, by mid-2025.

Rohit Joshi, the owner of Neonopolis, announced that the ride’s building permits have been approved by city officials. Aerodium will be constructed on the complex’s rooftop as part of an initiative to turn the property into a hub for unique, experiential attractions.

Aerodium: A Skydiving Experience Without the Plane

The Aerodium simulator will feature an air propulsion system enclosed by a net barrier, allowing participants to safely experience the sensation of freefall skydiving. The attraction will be integrated with Crash N Burn, a restaurant and entertainment venue on Neonopolis’ third floor that also offers arcade games, bowling, and party activities.

Joshi said he’s been working on the concept for years, emphasizing that experiential retail and attractions are among the most successful ventures in the Fremont Street area.

“I wanted to create phenomenal success stories that’re attractions only,” Joshi explained. “It’s all about content. If you bring a nighttime district, people will see it.”

Plans for More Rooftop Thrills

The Aerodium skydiving simulator may just be the beginning. Joshi is seeking investors to develop additional rooftop rides, such as a pendulum swing and a 90-degree roller coaster system, which he believes could draw even more visitors to the property.

The addition of these attractions is part of a broader strategy to transform Neonopolis into a dynamic entertainment destination. The complex is currently 90% leased, with Joshi reserving the remaining spaces for businesses that will complement the upcoming attractions.

Expanding the Vision

To further refine his ideas and attract investors, Joshi attended the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions trade show in Orlando this month. The event provided a platform for exploring cutting-edge technologies and concepts in the amusement industry, aligning with his vision for Neonopolis’ future.

By focusing on unique attractions like Aerodium, Joshi aims to enhance downtown Las Vegas’ appeal, turning it into a hub for experiential entertainment that complements the high-energy vibe of the Fremont Street Experience.
