🛍️ Online Shopping Safety: Spot Scams Before It’s Too Late
Online shopping has grown massively, with U.S. sales surpassing $1 trillion in 2022. Unfortunately, scammers have kept pace, operating millions of fake shopping websites designed to steal money and personal information. Here's how to identify these bogus sites and protect yourself:
How Scammers Operate
Fake websites often mimic legitimate ones or create generic-looking retail platforms.
Scammers lure victims through phishing emails, social media ads, or deceptive Google ads.
Common scams include delivering counterfeit items, charging hidden fees, or failing to deliver products.
Red Flags to Look For
Poor Visual Quality: Fuzzy or low-resolution images, copied logos.
Suspicious URLs: Typos, extra characters, or URLs with non-standard elements.
Broken/Missing Elements: Non-functional links or absent legal pages like refund policies.
Limited Payment Options: Emphasis on irreversible methods like wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
Grammar Issues: Awkward or incorrect language on the site.
HTTP vs. HTTPS: Lack of the secure "HTTPS" protocol or a padlock icon in the address bar.
Unrealistically Low Prices: Offers that seem too good to be true.
What to Do If You Suspect a Scam
Use a URL checker like URLVoid or Google’s tools to verify the site.
Search for the site's domain registration details on platforms like ICANN.
Look up reviews online using keywords like “scam” or “fraud.”
Report suspected fraudulent sites to the FTC or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Staying Safe
Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or messages.
Always visit websites by typing their URL directly into your browser.
Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true—they often are.
By staying vigilant and using these tips, you can shop safely and avoid falling victim to online scams.
🏈 Raiders’ Last-Second Fumble Hands Chiefs the Win in 19-17 Thriller
The Las Vegas Raiders suffered a crushing 19-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday, a game that seemed within their grasp until a chaotic ending dashed their hopes. The defeat marked the Raiders' eighth consecutive loss, further deepening their struggles this season.
Missed Opportunity
Trailing by two points, the Raiders mounted an impressive final drive, advancing from their own 8-yard line to the Chiefs’ 32-yard line with just 15 seconds remaining. Positioned for a potential game-winning field goal from kicker Daniel Carlson, who had struggled throughout the game, the team aimed to drain the clock with one last play.
However, confusion on the snap led to disaster. Quarterback Aidan O’Connell, returning from injury for his first start since Week 7, clapped to signal urgency, but rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson misinterpreted it as a snap count. The ball bounced off an unready O’Connell, resulting in a fumble recovered by the Chiefs’ defense. Kansas City declined an accompanying penalty on the Raiders, sealing their victory and clinching a playoff berth.
Players Shoulder Blame
Both O’Connell and Powers-Johnson took responsibility for the miscommunication.
“I clapped too early,” O’Connell admitted, explaining that he was trying to hurry his teammates into formation.
Powers-Johnson, in his first game snapping to O’Connell, refused to absolve himself: “I thought he was calling for the snap … those miscommunications can’t happen.”
Strong Performances in Vain
The late-game mistake overshadowed an otherwise impressive performance by the Raiders. O’Connell threw for a career-high 340 yards and two touchdowns, while rookie tight end Brock Bowers recorded a career-high 140 yards receiving. The Raiders’ running game, led by Sincere McCormick’s 64 rushing yards, also showed signs of life, racking up a season-high 116 rushing yards against one of the league’s top defenses.
Defensively, the Raiders pressured Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes throughout, notching four sacks and five tackles for loss. Despite trailing 10-3 at halftime, they rallied to take a 17-16 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 58-yard touchdown pass to Tre Tucker.
What’s Next?
The Raiders’ painful loss was a bitter pill for a team that had delivered one of its best all-around performances of the season. With their playoff hopes already dashed, the team faces mounting pressure to regroup and focus on fundamentals to end their losing streak.

🛍️ Las Vegas Black Friday: Shoppers Navigate Discounts and New Norms
Black Friday shopping in Las Vegas saw a mix of tradition and change this year, with shoppers like Ronda Deal reminiscing about the earlier rush of past years. Despite notable discounts and a surge in anticipated shoppers nationwide, some described the experience as less frenetic compared to previous Black Fridays.
Black Friday Deals and Shopper Stories
At the Walmart Supercenter on Serene Avenue, shoppers found classic doorbuster deals, such as a Vizio 75-inch 4K Smart TV for $478 (originally $598). Danine McDougall, visiting from Canada, snagged a 55-inch Hisense Roku Smart TV. For McDougall, Black Friday deals in the U.S. remain far better than those in Canada, though currency exchange rates make the discounts less impactful.
Christine Haylock, shopping at Town Square, capitalized on a $5 pajama pants deal at Old Navy and 30% off select items at Sephora, stocking up on gifts like high-end perfumes. Despite these bargains, Haylock noted a quieter atmosphere than expected at the usually bustling shopping center.
Economic Pressures and Consumer Trends
This year’s Black Friday shopping unfolded under economic pressures, with many consumers focusing on necessities or opting for gift cards, said retail consultant Burt Flickinger. While a record 183.4 million shoppers were expected to participate in the Thanksgiving-to-Cyber Monday shopping period, Flickinger highlighted challenges for blue-collar workers, seniors, and those on fixed incomes.
Holiday spending is forecasted to reach between $979.5 billion and $989 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), with online and non-store purchases contributing up to $297.9 billion. Safety concerns also continue to influence shopping habits, with retailers like Kroger, Costco, and Target praised for robust security investments.
Taylor Swift Boosts Target’s Sales
Target emerged as a standout retailer, largely thanks to exclusive Taylor Swift merchandise. Swift’s "The Tortured Poets Department" vinyls, CDs, and Eras Tour Book were available in-person only on Black Friday, drawing fans like Stefanie Hafen. Arriving at 7:30 a.m., Hafen managed to grab one of the last vinyl sets without facing long lines, benefiting from a buy-two-get-one-free promotion on CDs and vinyls.
Changing Black Friday Dynamics
The shift towards online shopping and year-round sales has transformed Black Friday from a one-day event into a broader holiday shopping season. While some shoppers, like Haylock, prefer Cyber Monday, others still relish in-person deals and the experience of finding exclusive items. However, the quieter stores and changing strategies suggest that Black Friday, while still significant, continues to evolve in the digital age.
🎄 “Christmas On The Strip” Honors Victims While Bringing Festive Cheer
For the first time since the tragic mass shooting on October 1, 2017, live entertainment is returning to the site of the Route 91 Harvest festival, where 60 lives were lost and hundreds were injured. The 15-acre site, now hosting the holiday event “Christmas On The Strip,” is set to run through December 29, marking a new chapter for the location.
A Festive Wonderland with Reflection
The event, described as a “festive wonderland,” features live performances, ice skating, a winter maze, light shows, and visits from Santa Claus. Organizers acknowledge the deep emotional weight of the site, prominently displaying a monument to honor the victims and donating part of the proceeds to the Vegas Strong Fund, which is developing a permanent memorial on nearby land donated by MGM Resorts.
Event manager Starr Stallings emphasized the importance of honoring the past while creating a positive future:
“We’re letting those who lost their lives know we are not forgetting them, and we want their families and others to be able to pay their respects while continuing to live their lives.”
Performances and Artists
The event kicks off with a 7 p.m. performance by veteran Las Vegas entertainer Chris Phillips of Zowie Bowie. The lineup also includes country acts like South of Graceland, Jimmie Allen, and Bryan Hopkins, a singer-songwriter deeply connected to the Route 91 tragedy. Hopkins, who was near the stage during the shooting in 2017, will perform on the site for the first time since that fateful day.
Hopkins, part Lakota Indian, plans to honor the moment with a personal ritual:
“I’m bringing sage, my eagle feather, and I step across the gate, bless the grounds and then perform. It will be a powerful experience.”
Site Ownership and Future Plans
The site, located across from the Luxor Las Vegas, was purchased four years ago by the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation). Chairman Mark Fox revealed plans for potential development, which could include a casino, hotel, and resort.
Jason Aldean’s Return to Las Vegas
Coinciding with the event, country music star Jason Aldean, who was performing when the shooting began in 2017, will return to Las Vegas next week. Aldean will open a new location of his restaurant at 63 CityCenter, about 2.5 miles from the Route 91 site. Aldean has previously spoken about his enduring connection to the Route 91 community and Las Vegas.
A Step Forward with Sensitivity
Though some performers declined to participate in the inaugural event, citing the emotional weight of the site, organizers hope “Christmas On The Strip” becomes an annual tradition, balancing remembrance with a vision for the future.
