💊 FDA Challenges Effectiveness of Phenylephrine in Cold Medicines
The FDA is reconsidering the use of oral phenylephrine, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cold and allergy medications like NyQuil, Mucinex, and Sudafed PE, after decades of research suggesting it is ineffective for nasal congestion relief. Some pharmacies, such as CVS, have already pulled products containing phenylephrine from their shelves, while others, like Walgreens and Rite Aid, are monitoring the FDA's review.
Longstanding Research Questions Effectiveness
Florida researchers, led by Dr. Randy Hatton and Dr. Leslie Hendeles of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, have questioned phenylephrine’s efficacy since 2005. Their meta-analysis of existing studies concluded that oral phenylephrine works no better than placebo pills for cold and allergy congestion.
“For 20 years, we have been telling everyone who will listen that oral phenylephrine doesn’t work,” Hatton said. Their persistent advocacy led to an FDA review in September 2023, with a proposed order to reevaluate the ingredient's use.
FDA's Review and Public Input
The FDA is currently seeking public comments on the proposal to discontinue phenylephrine in oral medications. A decision will follow the six-month comment period, but the debate has already influenced consumer behavior and pharmacy policies.
Alternatives for Nasal Congestion Relief
For those rethinking their go-to medications, several options remain effective:
Nasal Sprays with Phenylephrine: Effective for short-term relief but should only be used for 3-5 days to avoid rebound congestion.
Intranasal Steroids: Options like Flonase and Nasonex help reduce inflammation.
Oxymetazoline Nasal Sprays: Products like Afrin or Zicam are effective but require careful use to avoid dependency.
Saline Irrigation Devices: Neti pots or saline sprays like Sinex can flush sinuses. Always use distilled water for safety.
Pseudoephedrine-Based Products: Sudafed, found behind pharmacy counters, remains a reliable choice.
Oral Antihistamines: Medications like Zyrtec, Allegra, or Claritin help manage allergy-related congestion.
Non-Medication Solutions
For those seeking natural remedies, options include:
Spicy Foods: Capsaicin in spicy foods can help clear sinuses by inducing mucus drainage.
Steam and Humidifiers: Steam from hot showers or humidifiers can soothe sinuses.
Warm Compresses: Placed over the nose, these can relieve congestion.
Pharmacists Can Help
As the FDA evaluates phenylephrine’s future, consumers should explore these alternatives to ensure effective relief from nasal congestion.
🏒 Karlsson’s 700th Game Highlighted by Game-Winning Play
The Vegas Golden Knights secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night at T-Mobile Arena, with Brett Howden scoring the game-winning goal late in the third period. Howden’s goal, his second of the night and a career-high 10th of the season, was the result of a pinpoint backhand pass from William Karlsson. The play highlighted Karlsson’s skill and vision as he threaded the puck through three defenders to set up Howden’s tap-in.
The win was a much-needed boost for the Golden Knights (15-6-3) after their season-long five-game road trip, where they earned seven of 10 possible points. Head coach Bruce Cassidy credited his team for maintaining focus and bringing a "sense of purpose" despite a demanding schedule. The win also marked Karlsson’s 700th NHL game, a milestone he celebrated with a standout performance that included a dominant showing in the faceoff circle, winning 11 of 13 draws.
Jets Bring the Challenge
The Winnipeg Jets (18-6-0) entered the game as the NHL’s top team but were without their star goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck. Backup Eric Comrie got the start as the Jets managed their lineup ahead of crucial upcoming division games against Dallas and St. Louis. Comrie performed admirably with 26 saves, but the Knights found ways to capitalize on their chances. Despite the absence of Hellebuyck, the Jets put up a strong fight, led by center Cole Perfetti, who scored twice.
Perfetti opened the scoring in the first period, but Howden quickly responded for the Knights at 18:13, forcing a turnover and using his speed to crash the net. Ivan Barbashev then gave the Knights a 2-1 lead with a highlight-reel goal just before the period ended, scoring while sprawled on his stomach.
Perfetti tied the game again in the second period with his second goal, but Barbashev struck early in the third period, converting a behind-the-back pass from Jack Eichel to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. Winnipeg defenseman Neal Pionk brought the Jets back level with a shot at 8:55, setting the stage for Howden’s game-winning goal.
Karlsson’s Heroics Shine
Karlsson, one of the Knights’ most reliable players, delivered in his milestone game. His assist on Howden’s winner was a testament to his hockey IQ and skill. Karlsson described the play as instinctual, saying, “I had a lot of ice to skate into. I knew Howie was on my left and hoped he was there. Luckily, he was.”
Howden was quick to credit Karlsson for his setup, calling his own role “the easy job” of finding open space and finishing the play.
Late-Game Drama
The game ended in dramatic fashion, with the Knights holding off a late push by the Jets. Defenseman Brayden McNabb was called for tripping with 2:44 remaining, giving Winnipeg a power play. Comrie was pulled from the net in the final seconds, creating a six-on-four advantage for the Jets, but the Knights’ penalty kill stood strong. After clearing multiple dangerous opportunities, the Knights preserved the win.
Shorthanded situations late in games have been a challenge for Vegas this season, but Friday’s performance showed their ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.
Contributions Across the Roster
The Knights’ offense was powered by contributions from multiple players. Barbashev’s two goals showcased his knack for clutch scoring, while Eichel’s two assists brought his season total to 36 points in 24 games, keeping him among the league’s most productive forwards. Goaltender Adin Hill made 22 saves, providing stability in net as the team adjusted to a high-pressure game.
Alexander Holtz, though held off the scoresheet, was another standout. His defensive play and ability to draw defenders away opened up opportunities for his linemates. Holtz’s effort on Karlsson’s chance in the first period and his role in Howden’s winner were key moments that didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates or coaches.
Looking Ahead
The Knights now prepare for the second game of a back-to-back against the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday. With little time to rest, the team aims to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into the next contest. Despite the hectic schedule, Karlsson expressed optimism about the team’s form, saying, “I think we looked pretty good today. Hopefully, we come out looking the same tomorrow.”
The win over the Jets may not have been the signature victory the Knights hoped for, given Winnipeg’s goalie situation, but it demonstrated their ability to find answers in tight games. With a packed schedule ahead, the Knights will rely on their depth and resilience to keep their momentum alive.
Takeaways from the Game
Faceoff Dominance: Vegas controlled the faceoff circle, winning 33 of 48 draws. Karlsson (11-13) and Tomas Hertl (11-12) were particularly effective, contributing to the Knights’ ability to dictate play and neutralize the Jets’ power play.
Holtz’s Development: While Alexander Holtz didn’t score, his intelligent play off the puck contributed significantly. His ability to draw defenders and create space helped set up key plays, including the game-winning goal.
Penalty Kill Excellence: The Knights’ late penalty kill was crucial, as they denied the Jets’ six-on-four advantage in the final moments to secure the win.

🧑⚖️ President-elect Trump Nominates Kash Patel as FBI Director in Controversial Move
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Kash Patel, a loyal ally and vocal critic of federal law enforcement, to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The decision underscores Trump’s intent to overhaul the nation’s premier law enforcement agency and pursue his vision of rooting out perceived government conspiracies.
Trump announced the nomination Saturday on Truth Social, calling Patel a “brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter.” The move reflects Trump’s long-standing frustration with federal investigations that shadowed his presidency and led to his indictment. Patel’s confirmation, however, remains uncertain, even with a Republican-controlled Senate.
A Radical Agenda for the FBI
Patel’s nomination signals a potential shift in the FBI’s mission and operations. Known for his criticisms of the agency and intelligence community, Patel has advocated for dramatic changes, including reducing the FBI’s scope and converting its Washington headquarters into a "museum of the deep state."
Patel has also proposed cracking down on leaks to journalists, reversing a 2021 Justice Department policy that curtailed the practice of secretly seizing reporters’ records. He has publicly threatened legal and criminal action against government whistleblowers and members of the media, claiming they conspired to damage Trump’s reputation during the 2020 presidential election.
Challenges Ahead
Patel would replace Christopher Wray, who has served as FBI director since 2017. Although FBI directors typically have 10-year terms, Wray’s departure has been anticipated due to Trump’s dissatisfaction with his handling of key investigations, including the search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property for classified documents.
Patel’s confirmation may face significant hurdles. His polarizing views, history of targeting journalists, and calls for a smaller FBI are likely to draw scrutiny from lawmakers, even within Trump’s party. Trump has hinted at using recess appointments to bypass Senate confirmation if necessary.
A History of Loyalty
A former public defender and Justice Department prosecutor, Patel gained prominence as a staffer for the House Intelligence Committee under Rep. Devin Nunes, a staunch Trump ally. Patel played a key role in crafting the controversial “Nunes Memo,” which accused the Justice Department of misconduct during its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The memo faced criticism from Wray and Justice Department officials, who warned it could expose sensitive information. While an inspector general report later identified problems with the FBI’s surveillance methods, it also found no evidence of partisan bias in the Russia investigation.
Patel’s work on the memo deepened his distrust of the FBI and media, which he has called “the most powerful enemy the United States has ever seen.”
Additional Appointments
Trump also announced the nomination of Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister as administrator of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Chronister, a Florida Republican, has been a vocal supporter of Trump and worked closely with his pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi.
Looking Ahead
Trump’s nomination of Patel is part of a broader effort to reshape federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies to align with his political agenda. If confirmed, Patel’s leadership could bring sweeping changes to the FBI, reshaping its role in national security and law enforcement.
While some Republicans may embrace Patel’s confrontational approach, others may hesitate to back such a divisive figure. As Trump’s administration takes shape, Patel’s nomination serves as a litmus test for how far Senate Republicans are willing to go in supporting the president-elect’s agenda.
